Anyone know if dry ice is available near speed week?

I would contact the largest grocery store, Smith's. They have about everything.
Phone: (775) 664-3306

I'd be willing to bet that if they don't have it, they'd be willing to get it for you.

Smith's has had a dry ice dispenser in the past - right by the checkout lanes. It's the "soft" stuff - what I'e been told is the not-so-cold kind, but it is/was dry ice. I've got their phone number - at home, not here in the car. Give 'em a call to see if they've still got it. Not hard to find their number on line.

Just bought 10 lbs. works fine for us. We've been buying at smiths since 2010
-
Wow. Excellent guys. Thanks.

I would check, not seen it there every year
-
It's been there every year. In 2011, they moved it from near the checkout lanes to behind the counter in the deli area.

Just out of curiosity what do you use the dry ice for?
Rex

Use it mixed with with glycol in an intercooler
-
Dry ice absorbs about 3 times as much heat as frozen water per volume .

I am curious about Slims calling it "soft". i always thought it was either a solid or it turned to gas with no in between?

Once upon a time we were about to transport our first load of frozen pasties from home to the salt. So - I inquired locally about dry ice. The pasty shop told me that they had the "soft" dry ice and used it for packing when they ship frozen pasties. They went on to tell me that if I wanted the "hard" type I'd have to go to Escanaba - an hour's drive - to get it from an industrial place (or something). I asked then about the difference and was given some story that I don't remember other than there was/is a difference. I guess I could look into it again just for the sake of figuring out what the heck the place was telling me. From what I remember, I think the soft stuff is the easily available and the hard is such that only the dedicated gas shops (or whatever) sell it. Think of nitrous for your race vehicle -- it's available with or without smell if you're a doctor and can prove it - only available with stinkum if you are not a doc.

Very interesting. I never heard of soft or hard dry ice before.
On a side note you got my mouth watering when you mentioned U.P. pastys!!! There is still a shop in Milwaukee we visit every time we go home to see family. Wish they had them here in CO!

i went to a welding supply to buy some nitrous once. Got a big blue bottle marked "Medical Nitrous Oxide" Nobody asked for anything but money. Cheaper than normal suppliers.

Here's how to get pasties shipped from Marquette to you. Follow the link and click around, okay?

Use it mixed with with glycol in an intercooler
This also gives approx temp of -40 (F or C, same at this temp), which is much colder than std water ice.

I'll resurrect this topic to tell you that Smith's DOES HAVE dry ice now - as they have for a while. It's at the deli counter area - no longer in a deep deep freezer near the main checkout lines. Lief, the manager, says that they moved it a while back - but that's it's still available. There you have it. I don't know details -- how much $$, how cold, what shape - block, sheet, lump - but it's there. For the also while, they have the usual reefer truck stationed in the lot to dispense regular water ice. The reefer motor is running right now - that tells me that it's already full.

The Co2 from dry ice gassing can choke the engine or the driver......food for thought.

Smiths has had dry ice continuously (see my earlier email) since at least 2009 when I started looking for it. As Slim and I commented, it was moved from the end of the checkout line to the deli in 2010 or 2011.
To respond to how the product is offered, it is available as an approximate 12" x 12" x 2" block which they sometimes break so they can sell in 10# increments.
