Title: Records are meant to be broken . . . (motorcycle streamliners)
Post by: tallguy on July 05, 2014, 02:16:47 AM
It's my understanding that Sam Wheeler is considering "retiring" from
land speed racing pursuits.  I wish the following would happen:

He breaks the motorcycle land speed record this year (2014)--
at the Top Speed Shootout, where there's more room to accelerate,
compared to Speed Week.  If he breaks the record, I assume he won't
be too bothered by someone else breaking his new record.  I hope his
new record is broken by the BUB 7 bike,  whose team has been trying
for a long time.  After that, I hope the BUB 7 record is broken by the
Ack Attack bike, which has plenty of horsepower and a new traction-
control system.

James Toseland and team, as well as Jason Di Salvo (Castrol Rocket),
being relatively young and new to land speed racing, should have plenty
of time to break the new records.

That would take a lot of inter team co-operation to come true  :-o.............. as well as the support of the weather at Bonneville.  Not sure that any team would 'sandbag' once they have been given the right salt conditions to run and are running fast.

For 2014 James Toseland will not be there, so he will have to wait, as will the other Brits. Not sure that the Triumph team, if ready, would hold back this time either - not the ethos of the company whose name is prominent on the machine or their major sponsor.

I admire Sam's vehicle design and build quality and it would be good to see him run a fast two way record speed.

[I wanted Rosco to set a world record with his jet car after Noble and for Craig to reach 700 mph to complete his list - but neither came to fruition].

There comes a time when everyone hangs up the hat. Wishing in one hand & pi$$ing in the other will only get you a wet hand.
He's pursued a dream & done it well.

It seems to me that favorites to set a record is not as important as the record itself . A world record at Bonneville is a far cry from a favorite driver / team win at Daytona , rubbing fenders is more like two prize fighters duking it out in a champion ship fight . When a record attempt run is made , the driver / team are competing against a number , little or no thought is given to the person or team that set the number often they don't even know there names . Of course there is behind the scenes things that go on that blows my point apart , it happens when overinflated egos clash . Don Vesco and Dave Compos held the m/c streamliner record for over 3 decades , nether were my favorite nor do I have a favorite among the fast guys or give two hoots who sets the records or what order there set . The number and the effort it took to achieve it is what impresses me and they are my heroes not favorites.

Sam retire?  What......no way.

The shootout should  be between Sam and Mike Akatiff this year.
