Title: Camping at the New Museum
Post by: fastroadster on June 09, 2014, 10:19:40 PM
We camped out last year at the "New Museum" is it going to be available this year? It was great. Mayor Mike couldn't be beat and the BBQ's were great.

Good news, Camping will be available at the museum site. Great area all peagravel no mud. Drainage great (just in case). In the evenings great company. The porta-pottys are cleaned twice a day......

Okay, I should have started this topic but you did.  I posted on the SpeedWeek '14 topic that Nancy got in touch with Mike Crawford today and YES, there will be camping allowed at the site of the new museum this SpeedWeek.  I don't know any more -- if the area has been enlarged again, or if there is running water and maid service or anything.  but there'll be camping.  Okay?

Sounds good, in 2012 I camped at the KOA site. Not cheap :- As a Brit with little money this year (I'm bringing my blown Indian Scout with me from the UK) it's a godsend. Will camping still be permitted on the "Bend in the road"?

Yes, there's still camping allowed at the Bend in the Road.  Be mindful of the various Rangers and state park workers that will do their best to make you safe and paranoid, though. :?

Thanks for coming to the BBQ, I will probably not be there this year due to a new job and I do not know if my pal Mac will be trying to do it alone or not?

I did think about parking at the museum site last year but wasn't sure whether pitches were just a free for all on a daily basis.  I didn't want to offend anybody by nicking a pitch in amongst a group if it just so happened they had nipped out.  Ended up parking in the casino car park opposite the Nugget and enjoyed the sights and sounds from there.

Appreciate the camping at the museum site.  It was great last year and plan to do again this year.

For the past few years we've held Salt Talks at the Museum parking lot site.  It's worked fairly well for us, but- - -
Last years some non-racers were camping there, too.  The said they wanted to be able to see the meteor shower (Perseids) and would we please shut off our lights and turn down the sound so they could watch in peace and darkness.  We did -- but this year would rather not have to cave in to others nor to have to be bullies.  Don't ask us to stop, please.  Instead -- come on over and join the fun.

Sunday, Sunday, SUNDAY - at the beautiful US 20 Drag Strip near Gary, Indiana.

Wait -- no, that's from a commercial back in the 60's on a couple of the Chicago radio stations.  I heard those spots about a zillion times.

Back to Salt Talks.  It really is on Sunday -- the 10th of August this year.  It'll start around 5.30 or 6 pm, depending on when we get the grill fired up and producing hot food.  Around 8 or so we'll do the raffle, and by 8.30 - 8.45 we'll be in the dark 9so to speak) and folks will be going back to their lodging for the night - so we can all get up early and watch record return runs Monday morning at 7.

We'll see you there, I hope.

The guy who originated that radio ad was a well-known drag racing announcer Jon Lundberg. I've been nagging him to write a book with all the stories he knows about what went on in drag racing during his career. He nags me about getting my car finished  :-P

His inside story of the near riot at the first Super Stock Nationals in 1965 at York US30 Dragway is a hoot.

The very same. He lives in Tucson and has lunch on Thursdays with our "Car Guyz" group. Ask him about anyone in drag racing and he has a story.

Put another 15 years on and you will see you need to sleep in order to race (at least a few hours) :-D 8-) ,

It's very hard to sleep with a car in Impound.

It's very hard to sleep with a car in Impound.

Funny, I sleep better when we are in Impound.   :-D

What does bother my sleep is the red and blue flashing lights at all hours of the night.
They seem to illuminate my tent even if they're a mile away.

There are a lot of red and blue flashing lights on that road.

They are on when they are printing money for the court.
