Title: suggestions for medical insurance for racing
Post by: Swift33 on May 30, 2014, 03:35:25 PM
Hi Guys ,

 just been running through the medical form for speedweek and it's asking for proof of medical insurance.

I've tried a couple of companies here in the UK who specialize in race insurance  but they are not interested as soon as you mention Bonneville  :-o

Can anyone recommend a company who will insure to race at Bonneville ,

thanks ,

Stu

Wow, had not done the Med form yet... PROOF OF INSURANCE?  It used to ask you if you had any... hopefully they won't turn the uninsured into the government...

"Proof of Insurance", thats going to "impact" International competitors,, my experience in trying to obtain Accident Insurance is that you can get it, BUT!, at an "Exorbanote Premium",, most International racers that i know have run without and have to suckup the conquences, however now that proof is required, i guess thay will leave their vehicles at home unless somewon can come up with an affordable short term coverage,,

I choose to run FIM as thay offer/requier Insurance before thay issue you a licence,, thay nominate their Insurer who offers a reasonable rate,,,

  I didn't keep a copy of the medical form, But it seems they just want to know who the insurer is and info about it, but not proving it.

The wording has changed:

========================================

2013 was....

Insurance No____ Yes___ If yes, complete below
Carrier __________________________ ID No._____________
Group __________________ Subscriber___________________

=========================================

2014 is...

Please Provide Proof of Primary Medical Insurance (Fill In Completely)
Insurance
Carrier _________________________________ ID No. ________________
Group
___________________________ Subscriber __________________

=========================================

Has there been any word on this as to if it is an 'absolute requirement' that you have to be covered?

Here's a (very) little background on the insurance issue -- from what I've been able to find.

The driver's Medical Forms are mainly kept so that emergency personnel can ascertain if a person has a pre-existing condition that would effect his treatment at the sight and later at another care center.  You know -- allergies, medication already taken, etc.  The information in the forms are not entered in the SCTA computer systems, but the forms are kept handy in case of an emergency.

Racers that run at El Mirage know that each meet they must submit a form with the latest info.  I believe that the forms are kept in car number sequence as a driver may change cars from meet to meet.  I understand that these forms are shredded after the meet.

The SCTA is facing increased insurance costs and is hoping to curb the increases by having drivers responsible for their own insurance.  Whether this is now, or going to be, mandatory -- I don't know.

A case in point:  When Nancy crashed her bike at the line a couple of years ago the safety personnel that got there first -- had her medical form in hand.  That quickly.  The forms are all filed in three ring binders (one per emergency vehicle, perhaps) by race number.  But however they do it -- it was great to see them showing up with all of the information right then and there. :cheers: :cheers:

Medical emergencies in the States can be/are very expensive,, an associate of mine fell at last years BUB event, was taken to University Hospital in SLC by ambulance (road), thay kept him in over night for observation,, total billed to him US$14,000.00, he wasent insured,  :roll:

Stan

your post about SCTA facing increased insurance costs seems to suggests that SCTA currently has medical insurance in place for drivers and is asking the driver to provide their own insurance. Is this true? I assumed that I was not covered unless I provided my own insurance.

I happen to know from first hand experience that the SCTA carries a Secondary medical policy for entrants, it pays what your insurance does not up to $15k.  My transport to SLC was nearly $5K, Emergency room, $11-12K, various Doctors another $2K... Imaging another $2K...
I had a little trouble with my health insurance, BCBS, they were looking for someone to blame, asked me if any other vehicle was involved... Told them no insured vehicles were involved, that I was injured in an off road accident, no other vehicles, just me.
So I guess they are trying to lower the insurance costs... and all of us in America are supposed to have health insurance.... or pay a fine to the IRS....  thanks left wing crazies   :-o

Stainless,
Did that only add up to about $2,000/per/hr? :cheers:

It's good work when you can get it... My heart valve worked out way cheaper... more cost but over a longer time  :-o

For those looking for insurance, please realize that Bonneville is not racing, it is time trials,, yes a thin line but that is what you tell your carriers.

Good advise.  We're not competing fender to fender.  Unless a diesel pickup shows up.

As was posted elsewhere on this site a long time ago (CRS). If something happens, tell them you had a rollover incident near I-80.

For us in the UK it costs us £250 ($400 ish) to run at Bonneville and be covered for an accident while trying to set a record on the salt. That price covers us for our usual travel insurance too, cancelled flights, lost luggage and getting  ill etc. I think that is quite reasonable.

I spoke to the company you suggested , they will only cover me if I am travelling from the UK. :oops:

Not saying they will understand what you are trying to do,  :-P

But OAMPS have some Motorsports involvement via CAMS (I realise LSR has nothing to do with CAMS)

Might be worth calling OAMPs for a specific (tailored) quote?

If OAMPs are probably like AON who i use for FIM (Bubs and Shootout ) but will not cover me for WOS
also if i read my travel insurance fine print right there is something in there about risky behavior, mountain climbing etc being excluded
i would think time trials fit in there if they were looking for an out
fell asleep and drove off I80 sounds like a good option

OK.

This is for the Aussies, I have cover for exactly what we're doing. There is a discount for DLRA members and it will cover you for all your travel insurance needs.

Contact me for the details.

For those traveling from Canada, I found that Ingle Insurance (helpline@ingleinsurance.com) out of Toronto will cover me for peanuts ($25) as long as the racing is not considered professional and there are no cash prizes. Canadian insurers simply fly you home if your accident is serious and you are well enough to be flown.  A friend of ours was flown home from New Hampshire to Nova Scotia in a private jet, rather than staying in the States for treatment after she broke her arm and her hip (not racing). Insurance company paid the bill.

AMA will also sell you a policy that I assume covers you for racing as well, as they are the sanctioning body at BUBs.  It only covers the first $5000 to $15,000 depending on which level you buy, but it may qualify as insurance for SCTA as well.

In any case, it would be good to get something in writing that you will be covered for "time trials" at an amateur  :-D  event!

Ouch!  I just received word from Ingle that they do not have coverage for motorized speed events this year.
