Hey Y'all, it's been awhile.
I kind of bailed on making cars go fast awhile back and I went through a couple of bikes learning to ride and I'm kind of hooked on the whole go fast for cheap and still be able to get 40 mpg thing. Plus, the girls seem to go for a guy on a bike a lot more than a guy in an Escort. Go figure.
So my latest acquisition is a '98 Triumph Speed Triple that is in pretty fair condition. Around 5k miles and a solid runner with some cosmetic deficiencies that put it in my price range. I was thinking about sliding down to Wilmington this summer and making a pass once I get the safety stuff for the bike squared away.
I'm going off an older SCTA rulebook for class information (I'll order an ECTA one shortly so I can bring the safety equipment up to snuff), but it looks like I'd fall into M/G 1000/4- factory naked bike, slip on pipe, fender eliminated, aftermarket indicators.
My big question safety apparel. I have a Snell M2010 lid, but I'll need to buy some decent track leathers, gloves, and boots if my leather combat boots won't pass muster. (Full leather coverage 8" boots) What's decent and won't break the bank?

It all breaks the bank - it's broken extremities you're looking to avoid.

Shop ebay and craigslist.... I would guess a good set of combat boots will pass, but you might be surprised how cheap some really good second hand boots and leathers are.

When I first got started I bought a set of Teknic leathers, gloves and Alpine Star boots off Ebay for something like $225 shipped. I ran them for 2 years and they got too small for me so I sold them and bought brand new. I bought from Motorcyclegear.com. I bought new AGV leathers, gloves and Sidi boots all on clearance for a little under $500 and it is decent stuff. Later on I bought the zip up chest/back protector also

Yes,full leathers, if two piece it must be zippered together and all zippers must be metal and stitched to the leather. 8 inch Leather work boots are ok, full leather gloves not full of holes. Helmet must be Snell 2006 ? or the European equivalent. I see some riders wear the spine protectors...they might be required for certain classes with high speed records ? My rider got a nifty set of leathers on Ebay like mentioned above.

ECTA Rules:
7.C.2 Leathers:
Leathers certified by a recognized manufacturer to be suitable for the application are required.
One-piece suits or two-piece suits zippered together are allowed. Required over 175 MPH:
One-piece leathers or two-piece leathers with full (270 degree) zipper. Also required over 175
MPH: Special protective armor, as produced by a recognized manufacturer, with minimum
coverage at elbows, knees, shoulders, hips and back. Undergarments having the required
armor coverage are acceptable, when the undergarment is worn with the required leather
suit.
We do not require "All Leather" as required by SCTA.

I see that Mr. Truckedup did not understand my question about the SCTA/BNI "all Leather" rule.........But Joe did........Thank you Joe.......Our road race leathers are OK. to race your event....................

Thanks Joe. Just what I was looking for. I'm not sure where all my old ECTA rulebooks went. I'll be sending for a new one shortly.
I'm having a time of finding my size (38-42) for sale used, but I've got a few months so I ought to be able to come up with something.
Aside from good common sense, are there any good reasons I couldn't load up my saddle bags and ride to the event?

Snell 2005 is still acceptable but I don't think there is a sufficient European certification to pass Tech. A hardshell back protector is always recommended regardless of the speed you hope to go. The minimum requirements for over 175 are usually held as minimum requirements for all bike riders. A pair of hip padded compression shorts aren't a bad idea either. It once was suggesed to me to remove the knee sliders from my leathers because they could cause the leg to twist in that most unwanted (not) riding position.
