It's about time to get going on the shirts for this year's Salt Talks. I'll ask that we do it the same way as we have the past few years -- "auctioning" the spots on the front of the shirt. Cars, bikes, trucks, or whatever you've got that'd look good on the shirt. Remember that we'll be doing the work with real photographs -- no artist re-drawing of the chosen few vehicles, and that means that we'll need a really good photo. If you've got one of the sorta common shots of your racer against the mountains in the background of either EM or Bville -- that's great because then we can concentrate on your vehicle - not the stuff of the pits or the line or something. The better the photo -- the better the shirts.
As for the back of the shirt -- that's reserved for now. I will sell spots on the sleeves, though -- see last year's shirt to see how Wheelerdealers's sleeve ad worked.
I'm not in a great hurry to get the spaces sold -- will be satisfied if we make the decision by mid-May or so. Sooner is fine with me, too.
Think about the 2014 Salt Talks t-shirt now and have your vehicle immoralised (sic!) on it.

Hoping to see the back feature our departed friend Ray.

Hey, HEY, HAY!! It's the first of May and time to get going with the annual Salt Talks t-shirts art auction. Here's the story (in case you don't already know it):
Each year at SpeedWeek we hold Salt Talks -- a picnic for everyone that wants to spend some time enjoying a hamburger or hot dog or chicken or whatever else we have. It's open to all - racers, crew, spectators, and townspeople. It is the single biggest fundraiser for landracing.com, and to help make a buck (to keep the site up and running) we create and sell commemorative t-shirts. In the deep past we'd pick some vehicles and put them on the shirt, make a bunch of shirts, and hope to sell enough to at least get our money back - but better still, make a couple of bucks. Sometimes that worked, and sometimes -- well, we've got lots of old shirts in the basement. So - Stainless offered a great idea that's worked well for the past three or four years.
How'd you like to have YOUR vehicle on the shirt? It's easy - just ante up. We put three (sometimes four) vehicles on the shirts, choosing which ones because the owner/crew/rider/driver has ponied up the most $$ for the honor of having his vehicle displayed for all to see. We'll have something like 125 shirts made. We make 'em here at Kudos Laser (our store) and will use full-color photos, not just plain ol' silk screen, so the colors will be accurate and very permanent. You'll need to send us a photo that you want on the shirt - that's it.
There's room, as I said, for three or four vehicles. We put a logo and the event date on the front, too. The back of this year's shirt is reserved for Ray the Rat, but we've got room on the sleeves for you or your company or shop to have us put a logo or something on them. That'll cost you, too.
How much? Well, for the past few years we've managed to raise about a thousand dollars by auctioning off the space on the shirt. We then sell the shirts at Salt Talks for $20 each. If you are one the three or four high bidders -- yes, you'll get a discount on the shirts that you buy.
Here's your chance to show everyone your ride. You're encouraged to send your "bids" to me by posting here, by PM, by email, or by sending a large envelope chock full of cash. The bidding is open now -- and you'll have a week or two to see how much you want to donate to the site - to be on the 2014 Salt Talks t-shirt. Let's hear from you soon.
-
Folks, did I say something that got you all cranky? No responses yet for the shirts -- not even a question about something, much less a "bid" to get a space on the shirts. We've learned that to be a true fundraiser for the site that we need to pre-sell the shirts, so to speak. If we don't get some offers we'll put the idea of Salt Talks 2014 shirts away (maybe next year?) and see if there's something else that you'd rather have, like maybe coffee mugs with photos on 'em. I would really like to stay with something that's pretty big this year - so we can put our bit of homage to Ray the Rat on each one.
Let's see --- Salt Talks shop rags? Salt Talks official toilet seat covers? Nah -- where'd the art go? Let's hear somoe ideas, please, or better still -- some bids to be on the shirts. We need to get the shirts going so we can get the art ready and have the originals made and order the shirts and produce the shirts, and - - whew, I'm tired just thinking about it all.
-
Here I go again. I've received no responses from you folks (or anyone) about the 2014 Salt Talks t-shirts. I'll take that (if I don't hear something pretty soon) as a statement that you're not all that fired up about the shirts for this year, and that will take us to something - unh, drastic - sorta.
We do intend to have shirts this year*. The sale of them is the biggest individual fund raising source for landracing.com, so we can't give up completely. The kitty is getting pretty danged empty now and needs refilling. But if I can't get you to commit to sending some money in advance I'll cut the number of shirts that we make. Where we have been getting 120 or so -- I can see maybe half that amount this year. The cost of getting the shirts ready is what makes us want to get some $$ up front - so we don't end up with a bunch of extras if there's something like a rainout that cancels Salt Talks. Making the smaller amount saves us part of that big expense.
* We want shirts this year so we can have a visual monument to Ray Buck (a/k/a Ray the Rat). I know we could make and sell some shirts with Ray (only) on them, but I'm hesitant to try to raise money for the website by using his unfortunate and untimely death as the exclusive reason to buy a shirt. I'd rather have him contributing in his own way - just like you will when you offer some money in exchange for your place on the shirts.
Let's hear from you, please.
-
OK Slim, I'm in for the same as the last several years. Don't remember the number but I will look it up on my paypal. I'll find something for a Pic
come on guys, it is a LR.com fundraiser
-
me too!!
-
Come on guys, you are bound to be tired of seeing my and SSS stuff on the t-shirts. A couple of hundred bucks is the cheapest you can get to have your car or bike on a t-shirt. And it keeps this website going for all of us.
-
OK kids, I moved this to an area that most will read.
You want to see Freud naked on a motorcycle again?
Or would you prefer the 7 moons over the Bockscar?
It is a fundraiser, and you can put your favorite vehicle on the Salt Talks shirt. Step up and fund this for the website.
Don't make me pick a photo for the shirt. AGAIN
-
Incentive... thinking this would work
-
Hey, I'd buy two of those!
Regards, Neil Tucson, AZ
-
We would put up $500.00 for the cause.
-
Hey, hey, HAY! Thank you, GSShop! I was worried that the shirts wouldn't be as good as we want them to be. That is -- well, Stainless wanted to use the photo of his entire crew mooning the camera (with the car in the foreground), and that would have somehow "cheapened" the shirt, I think. If the had at least used make-up and powdered their cheeks (so to speak) it might have been acceptable.
So thank you very much. We ordered the blank shirts yesterday - somehow knowing the you and maybe someone else will come through to keep Stainless or Fred off the shirt. Although -- they've been reliable sponsors of it for a few years, and I'd like to acknowledge their continuing work. maybe if we had the Stainless crew AND Fred mooning the - - nah,l never mind. I'll get in touch with you via PM. Thanks again.
Anyone else? You've still got a bit of time to get on the shirt front. It'll be a good one this year, I promise.
-

Jon,
how you know? if you ask so...here is the picture.... :-D :-D :-D

Slim:
Parkland Autosport is good for the sleeve again this year, I will look up what we paid last year. The LSR folks are starting to buy a few fire suppression systems from us. Thanks.

right click... save as.... :-D

Cool! They're mooooooo-ning the camera.

Good work, PP. I recognised the artwork right away -- but I don't think I see your skinny butt in there. It must be that you were the photographer and couldn't be in the shot. Nice work, though. that I could use on the shirt -- if I wanted to keep sales low.
-
:-D :-D :-D
-
Slim Im sure sales with the PP Moons would be much better than the moons of the actual crew :-D

Jon,
I remember that you are a little bit sensitive about my art work   (picture in the background...a year ago)......so I took care and didn't use "Reality"
-
OK, maybe I got outbid, so I upped my bid $25, to try to get ahead of Fred or Peter... one of you other teams need to jump in here... it won't take that much to outbid us I'd bet.
Fred, which bike you thinking about?
Pork Pie, nice moons :-D
Step up boys, times a wasting
-
Here's the latest:
Gary's Speed Shop is on the shirt, and so is Peter Dallan and his crew from the UK. Third is either Stainless or Fred, I think, and we also have buyers for one or maybe both of the sleeves.
in other words, Fred and Stainless are welcome to duke it out to see if it's Stainless' hiney(s) or Fred's -- Fred's -- unh, whatever Fred wants if he's the successful bidder. Either I'll hear form one other racer/crew/owner that wants to see his stuff on the shirt and bids at least $250 -- or I'll wait to hear from Fred and Stainless to see what they have to say at the last moment.
Thank you all for participating. I sure do hope you'll enjoy the shirts. We'll have 'em at Salt Talks on the 10nd of August 2014. Once we get the art all designed up I'll post a shot of it so you can see how it turned out.
-
I will bow to Stainless, His moon shot is way more interesting than the SOS from me!!
-
OK slackers, now you know the number that will get you infamy, forever emblazoned on the Salt Talks shirt. Its been 35 years since Freud took his now famous ride.... Maybe we can get an updated picture....
Hey Freud, you birthday suit seems to be all wrinkled :-D
You guys better save the shirt from me
-
 From CROOKED LETTER BREWING CO.
-
Hey Jon, do I need to get a picture together... or has someone saved the shirt from me? Thinking before/after... :-o if Pork Pie and Hotrod give me permission to use their shots on the ST shirt.
-
Step the next:
Peter Dallan has supplied the art he wants on the shirt and I'm still waiting for the other two. That's you, Gary's Speed Shop (I don't think it's here yet) and either Stainless or Fred. Stainless: Fred said he'd let you have the spot, but since you haven't sent anything yet -- go ahead and pummel with him to see who's really going to be there.
We've ordered the blank shirts and want to get busy with designing 'em, so get it settled and your picture to me poste haste, okay? Thanks.
-
Hey Jon, do I need to get a picture together... or has someone saved the shirt from me? Thinking before/after... :-o if Pork Pie and Hotrod give me permission to use their shots on the ST shirt.
Stainless,
it will be a pleasure for me to get you the permission to use one of the shots I done....I like the one you had on this thread with this "very honest" comment.....why you use not this one...it is one of the most dramatic of the series I done from your flips and flops.....and now we repeat the same again.....
The quality of this picture series I got you a while ago is more than good enough for the shirt.....
If you think of any other kind of picture....let me know....currently I'm working on the "regular" picture of the streamliner - hope to get them finish to the end of the week (we are having a holiday (public holiday for our English community) today in Germany)
-
How about a "before" and "after" (or during) shot? one on the front of the shirt and the other on the back. "SALT HAPPENS!"
Regards, Neil Tucson, AZ
-
Fine idea, Neil, but all of one side of the shirt is reserved for Ray Buck. If you want to have your own shirts made so you can show off a before and after -- well, get in touch with me! :-D
-
That pair of photos cannot be of anyone other than Stainless!
Regards, Neil Tucson, AZ
-
AsI said, go for it Stainless.
-
Where do we send the picture?
Thanks Gary
-
Send it to me at the email address by my avatar. It's jonwennerberg@nancyandjon.org in case you don't see it there.
Send it to me as a jpeg or bmp or tiff or something like that, and as big as possible. Well, that is, don't compress it down to make it go faster. The higher the resolution the higher the resulting quality.
Once I get yours and Stainless' I'll get Terri to mock up the front of the shirt and let you folks see what we're going to do.
thanks.
-
SSS, sent you a picture, I liked the previous shirts with the larger images better than the film roll style of last year....
paypaling you a gift
Let me know if the pic meets your criteria for tasteful...
You guys asked for it.... we are headed to the moon with this one
-
Well, sir -- you've caught me on the day that I've sent the art work to the artist that puts things together. And - I mentioned your comments about the photos being smaller than you'd like, for sure. She responded with something like "...if he thinks those were small, wait 'til he sees his this year, that SOB..." or something.
Well, I did offer the too small comment. We'll see. I'll mention that the lower part of the shot you sent me is kinda difficult to see and understand already because it's small, but - she'll work with it and us. The others are pretty bold and fine -- you're the one that'll take some doing.
Thanks in advance for the $$. It's not here yet, but Paypal is sometimes a few minutes behind the rest of the commercial world.
-
I'll send one with a larger lower if that helps... give me a day
-
Let's see what Terri thinks of the first one. Thanks for the PP (not Pork Pie). It did come through just now.
Are you infested with moquites down there? We've got an absolutely astounding bumper crop of them this year. WoW!
-
Jon & Stainless,
please check your emails
-
Let's see what Terri thinks of the first one. Thanks for the PP (not Pork Pie). It did come through just now.
SSS,
Isn't it a little early in the race season to be riding PP :?. Heck as far as I know he is still 1/2 a world away
-
Pork Pie, added another request, Jon let the art person have Sunday off... she can go to church... One more change coming
-
Talking about Salt Talk....
Two canvas picture are in print for the donation/auction for Salt Talk 2014, so as in the last years....
-
Are you having an auction at Salt Talks this year ? If so, will try to bring some small items for it, if not, might just bring them anyway and you can sell off to raise funds. What date are the Salt talks ?
Cheers
John

I would think it is Aug 10...Sunday after the meet starts on Saturday.

Okay, okay -- how 'bout: "THE Sunday after SpeedWeek starts (on Saturday)"?

Speaking of shirts... are you planning on unveiling the art work on this year's shirts? Maybe you can have Nancy take a picture of you wearing one.... I suggest this only because when Nancy models the shirts the design is hard to see on the horizontal surfaces :-D :-D
-
Well, sure -- the art will be there for all to see -- as soon as Terri gets done putting it into a proper-looking package (I know, I know -- you don't want Nancy looking proper, do you?) so we can finalise and get going on making the shirts. We've got the blank shirts on hand already -- and the back and sleeves are ready - so all that's left is figuring out the front. And Terri sent an email this morning saying she's working on the stuff today, so maybe pretty soon chop-chop quick like a runny babbit there'll be something to show youse guys.
-
So I'm guessing....the Sunday after the Saturday on which Speedweek starts !!!
-
Is this at the museum site again? We missed last years meet but will get there this time for sure. I've not been on to the museum site yet so wasn't sure how much room there was for parking the rv.
-
So is it Sunday night the 10th of August for sure :?
-
Yes, Sparky -- Sunday, the 10st of August, starting somewhere around 5.30 or 6. We use the grill from the Enola Gay Cafe, and that means we have to wait for them to close down for the evening before we can fetch it, and therefore we're not always able to give a specific time for the start of the food. You're always welcome to show up and shoot the breeze while we set up, of course. That's all of you - not just Mr. Sparky hisself.
And as for the location, we're not sure if maybe we'll go back to the Bend in the Road. The attendance at the museum parking lot last year wasn't nearly as good as we've had in previous years, and we're thinking that might be because of the new location. We're planning on putting up a few signs on the access road, in the pits, maybe even on the toilets, so that'll probably help us some more visitors at the Salt Talks picnic.
What's your preference, everyone? Museum site - or Bend in the Road? I'll post this and set up a poll, okay? It's up at the top of this page. Let's see how it goes. Thanks - and we'll see you on the salt and at Salt Talks three weeks from tomorrow night.
-
Jon:
Sorry, the public school education is showing,,,
per the home page on this web site; 20 days to start of speedweek???
Jim
-
Jon, I am greedy ---I wish to support you and the new museum ---lets try to support both you and them!!!!
-
Jim, I mis-spoke. Salt Talks is three weeks from tonight, not two. I should have checked a calendar before typing the post. I have since edited and corrected my post. As for your reaction --
Your public education is showing, too. You shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet.
-
I voted for the Bend, since I will be staying there. However, I plan on attending regardless of where it is held.
-
Jon, have you printed any shirts yet? We are all waiting with bated breath to see the final product!
-
As long as the weather forecast is ok I'd give the bend a go. We don't want to be getting the rv stuck if it's a bit damp and sticky. If the salt gods are being kind though we can just pitch up here and enjoy a few beers.
-
Jon:
I don't think PAS paid you yet for the logo ad. Send me a PM with the invoice I will get that out to you. Oh and save me an XL shirt too.
BR
-
Stainless, the front art is as you saw it so don't worry about missing out on a radical change. But no -- we haven't made any shirts yet - sort of. We're waiting for the complete reverse transfers to arrive from the shop where they're made - and that arrival had dang well better be any day now. We have done the sleeves on each of them, though, so progress has progressed progressively.
I suppose I could post a copy of the front art for one and all to see. It's a big file -- I might have to farkle to get it to show you here. Otherwise-- wait 'til I have a shirt in hand (or better yet, in Nancy's hand) and you'll see a photo.
-
I voted for the Bend, since I will be staying there. However, I plan on attending regardless of where it is held.
My thoughts exactly.
-
We've decided to have Salt Talks at the new museum (site) parking lot. We understand the good things about holding the picnic at the Bend in the Road, but there are too many potential issues there - especially weather related hassles. Either wind or rain - both have been a pain in the dookus enough times that we appreciate the paved/graveled lot of the museum.
We're going to put a few signs here and there around the salt -- maybe on the toilets (easy for us to do) and even on the access road. We hope to gather a few "new" folks to the event - and remind some of the rest of youse guys that it's coming up Sunday evening around 6. We'll be cooking the food by then, I figure, and we'll try to have everything wrapped up and packed up by 8.30 - 8.45. that's when the sun has gone down well below the mountain in the back and it's getting dark quickly. Last year it was really dark when Nancy and I finally got done, hopped into the pickup - and drove straight ahead, into a ditch. Dang! :-o A few bucks of body work and we were back to "normal", and I'd just as soon be able to see where we're going this time around.
Final note: If you've got stuff you'd like to donate for our raffle -- drop it off at the SSS pit or just show up at Salt Talks with it. We'll start selling tickets as soon as we commandeer a person to do that duty. See you on - - the gravel? I know - it doesn't fall trippingly from the tongue, but that's how it's going to be this year.
-
How many people do you expect.
-
100 will be disappointing - 200 acceptable, 300 dandy, 400 stupendous. We're in north central Wyoming and heading south. I'm wearing a '14 Salt Talks shirt - the first time one of them has been worn. It's got your car on it, Gary. And Stainless' ride is on there, and so is the Barons stuff.
Come to Salt Talks to get yours - or try to find us at the pit during a weak moment.
-
Jon;
Watch out going through Pinedale, Wyoming. I spent 3 days in jail there back in the late '60s-- it's a long story. :-D
Regards, Neil Tucson, AZ
-
Slim, I'll gladly step up and volunteer to sell raffle tickets Sunday.
-
Great news, LSRJ. Come find our pit before then and Nancy and I will give you the usual training courses, the background check, the drug test (Have you got any drugs? Let me test them!!), and checking at least three references. Our pit is easy to find -- look for the CIA/FBI/NSA/PDQ banners. Thanks for volunteering.
-
Any time Slim!
See you in a few days.

Here you go -- the first ever pictures of the '14 Salt Talks shirt, being held up for your inspection by Land's End Lynda.

That is a good looking shirt!!! I'm definitely going to get one!

Nice tribute to Ray. Very nice.
I'll be there and volunteer to help you close up if you need any help . . . . . Art

That's a great-looking shirt!

It's weird, even though I never met Ray I felt a real sadness to learn of his departure. I enjoyed his pics and posts on this site. Will definitely be getting a shirt at Salt Talks. Do they come in kids sizes to?
-
I think we made a few in "S" but none smaller. However -- we've still got the original art and it isn't difficult at all to make them to order after we get back home. Come see us at our pit and tell us what you want. They're relatively easy to make once we've got the art all ready.
-
Cheers Jon, he's a growing lad so small might be ok. The shirt we bought him last year only just fits him but we'll see when we get there.
-
Jon I forgot to get your cell number...I can text you pics.
-
Jon, I still have the shot glasses in my truck.
-
I plan to get a shirt to Ray's sister.
Then I will show her how to contact you.

Jon,
Due to crazinest at aborted SW, I was only able to visit briefly with Nancy. If you have any extra Salt Talks shirts, I'd be interested in one. Please PM me. Damn, I didn't know about Ray... :?
