Title: Chat room - why don't you visit?
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on February 26, 2014, 11:10:30 AM
During the recent past the "attendance" at the Chat Room (Tuesday evenings 9PM Eastern, 7PM Mountain, etc) has been small.  The same five or ten folks every week -- but that's it.  Why don't you visit and join in the sessions?  We're trying to find out so maybe we can have more folks use and enjoy it.

Sumner made a post about the Room this morning on the Chat Room thread - but I'll reproduce it here.

"I'm wondering would more of you attend chat if it started with a specific subject matter with a moderator for that subject.  For instance say one night it is Glen and he answers questions about timing, or a specific car owner that answers questions about his car, or say someone from a place selling carbs and they answer questions, etc.  Then when the question period peters out it goes into a general chat?

With this format some could just lurk and not feel that they have to type and say anything, just be there and then enter in if you felt like it.

How about other ideas to make chat popular?  Are the Java problems in getting it to work and the security warnings using it turning you away?

Also the chat room works 24-7 so is anyone interested in using it spur of the moment if they see others are on during the day?

Sum"

The Chat Room is open and free and available to one and all.  I'd appreciate hearing why you don't visit - so maybe we can make it so you do.  Let's hear from you, hey?

Unfortunately for the last while we've had to work our way through warning messages to get into the chat room. That probably turns off a lot of people but it turns out that there doesn't seem to be any real basis for the warnings. None of us has had any issues from getting on the chat room. Hopefully more people will work their way in.

When I installed chat on the website, tablets were not a consumer product like they are today. As many things happen over the years things must be upgraded and freshened to keep interest.

Tablets provide a challenge because flash would be the way to go, but Apple products like Ipad and Iphones do not use Silverlight or Flash.

So the limitations are just not to computers which do everything well, Tablets do not. Finding a one solution that fits all criteria could be challenging that are low cost (Free).

As the years went on more strict policies are put in place by operating system that use Java, so today that may not be the media of choice but back in 2004 it was.

There is a version of Chat that integrates within this forum software and since this works on almost all media types it might be worth investigating to bring a new chat functionality to the website.

Just some things to consider.

The button is not on the forum, it's on the main page, right hand side, just under the calendar.

Jon, you're more aware of things like a new version of the Chat Room stuff -- so how about letting me (and all of us) know what to look for/what to have Bob look for?  Once we find it maybe we can see if it's of interest to the folks here.  Because of the time difference I don't visit the chatting folks often -- so have to rely on what others (like you) can bring to the table.  Thanks.

I'll resurrect this old topic with the same question as before -- why don't you visit the Chat Room.  It's on Tuesday evening at 9PM Eastern time and 6PM Pacific.  Maybe that there is a problem -- wrong time of day.  Or maybe wrong day.  Any comments on moving it?

I don't like having that extra feature of the site go pretty much unused.  No, it doesn't cost anything to have it available, but still -- if it's not used - - why should we have it there?  If only one or three folks sign in -- they aren't going to have much discussing to discuss.

I wish there were a time warp device available that'd let me run the Chat Room at the same time across the nation -- you know, like Dr. Peabody's WayBack machine adapted for the internet so we could all have the Chat at say, 8PM local time.  But until I get that one loaded into this 'outer I guess I'll have to wait for some good comments about how to get more of youse guys to use the Chat Room.  My excuse is the basic one -- we almost always are in bed by 9.30 Eastern time, and that means leaving the computer desk at no later than 9.15 to brush teeth and so on.  You don't need to know what "so on" means, do you? :-D

The last few weeks its picked up a bit Slim but we could certainly use more participation. I think it really helps at times when someone who's building a car gets on and asks a question. Three or four guys doing a little brainstorming can really help make a step forward. We can also talk about the weather. Those in the more southern climes can boast about their temperatures and those of us a little more north can boast about how tough we are.  :-D :-D :-D

Anyone who is thinking about it come aboard and have a little fun and get to know a few new people interested in lsr and a bunch of other stuff. The topics are all over the place and anything's open.

because CGI driven chat rooms are annoying.

Now... If you want to set one up that uses IRC, I would be totally into that.  I even know a few IRC network admins that could make it happen.  It's old technology but it works!

Also I've not seen a link anywhere refering to the chat room.  I had no idea it existed at all till now.  Some big skype sessions or something of the like would be a lot of fun.

Check on the top right corner of the home page to find the entrance to the chat area. The rest of us aren't computer geeks and aren't interested in getting involved in the technology that allows us to chat. We just got into the system we have now and it works for the rest of us. If you care to lower yourself to the level of ordinary folk you're welcome to join us on Tuesday. When we get a decent sized group it can be a lot of fun plus there's often a lot of knowledge to draw on.

I'm probably at work when that's all going down.  Workin' 40 and finding time to stay a bachelor doesn't leave you with a lot of spare time during the work week.

Actually the chat could be set up in such a way it uses a web interface, and is accesible via an IRC client.

If you don't like us don't join us some of us have been on it for several years.

It has nothing to do with not liking you, and everything to do with not wanting to work around a lagging, cpu hogging, clunky interface that drives me up the wall.  The topic is, why don't I visit, and i'm letting you know why.  Now if you get offended about that, and take it personally, that's you're problem.

Your talking above most of our heads and we aren't interested in changing. We're too busy staying involved in lsr to get involved with all the little details involved in computer technology that doesn't involve racing.

Again, the invitation is extended.

Bob, our web elf, keeps things moving along - at a pace that most of us can follow.  We just got a clunky Chat Room to work better enough that we aren't going to futz with it for a while, I hope.

We've batted the idea of changing things to get more folks using the room -- but if nothing else, the two dozen time zones - four and more in this country alone -- make it a pain for one and all to use.  For instance -- The thing doesn't start 'til 9PM at our house -- and we're usually in bed by 9.30.  I seldom manage to stay up "late" enough to join the fun.  And then I think of Mike in SA and Anders in Sweden -- and am glad that it's only a little bit at a bad time for me.

But it's what we have and it seems to work - so all I can do is keep your ideas on the list of things that might help the site be better and easier for all.  Here, by the way, is a shot of the portion of the home page with the Chat Room liknk in it:

Actually it's considerably less clunky than expected.  html-5 is sometimes a wonderful thing.

Sorry, Ben -- but once in a while I can't help but be a smart-ass.

HTML5?  Is that a new version of ERC's MUL-C race gas?

We're by and large racers that aren't all that familiar with code and stuff like that.  But ask me about portable toilets at Bville and you can get hours and hours of good information*.  Ask one of us about reading pinion gears and we can help.  Ask us to do much beyond logging into landracing.com -- and we're frickin' lost.  That's why we keep it as simple as we can here.

---

*Well, okay, minutes.

***Okay -- long enough to void and zip.

PS  In case you didn't know, and with you being pretty new you haven't seen me in action, but my prime Bonneville volunteer duty is marshalling six dozen porta-potties.  Everybody's got something fun to do while racing.

new fuel??? html5? could be, if it's a biofuel based on male bovine excrement.

marshalling porta potties?  not bad so long as none of them are laying down on the job!

I just like IRC as an option because often times I cripple this machine to the point it's stuck at console only for a few days while things recompile.  I doubt any of the text only browsers I can use from the console in that case will work with the chat application.  IRC of course works just fine from the console.  Incidently though the forum does work from text only browsers. :D

Also, if I ever complain about someone being a smart ass you should ban me immediatly.

Polyhead,

Text-only browsers?  Where are you?  What is your special need?  PM me if you have some good info.  A text-only browser reminds me of my pre-mouse, text-only, green-screen days.

Oh it's not a need usually, except when I break X.  X is part of the gui system on linux.  It has some fragility to it and sometimes I do a thing that brings the entire house of cards down.  So then it takes a week or so to sort the mess out and that leaves me using just the console till I work out what I've done wrong.

hahahahaha yeah probably.

Then again, a purely textual system has it's advantages.  I mean... you can do movie play back on the console.  http://www.linuxandlife.com/2012/02/how-to-play-videos-in-terminal.html

Ummm...so a purely textual system does video?  Seems pretty contradictory.

Probably not my exact situation, but then again, AAlib exist for a reason... I sure didn't author that god awful mess.  I will say this, anyone that runs X is running a fragile ass house of damned fragile cards made of fragile materials on a fragile table in a house made of straw straddling the san adreas fault.  If you leave X alone it stays working, but it doesn't always run all that great when left alone so you poke at it with a stick and then it blows up in your face sometimes.  X has always been, and continues to be the WORST part about any linux distro.
