Title: Hotel reservations for Speedweek 2014
Post by: edinlr on February 19, 2014, 12:07:47 PM
Just made my reservations at the Montego Bay.  Now we just have to hope for good salt and no r***.   :-)

Dare I ask?  Would you mind sharing details, like how much/night, required deposit (if any), refundable deposit or not, minimum stay requirement - and so on?  It's not that we need to be snoopy, but rather that it's always of interest to see how much it's going to cost to stay during SpeedWeek.  Thanks.

Thats supply & demand for you. The rest of the year they only get a few dusty travelers checking in! :-D
We booked a double room at the Nugget a few weeks ago. 10 nights came out at $1528 all in. They dont seem to have debited any money yet.

Montego Bay rates per their Speed Week package: Thursday the 7th - $99; Friday thru Sunday nights - $259; Monday - $129; and Tuesday -$109.  Friday & Saturday nights are only available in their 5 day package.  Large size rooms with 2 king beds each, makes for decent bunkhouse accommodations.  :-o

As Bob said above, the rates are higher Friday through Sunday and drop during the week.  Last year I was at a nasty room at the Rainbow with 70's décor, slimy carpet and an airplane sized bath, all for about $250 per night.  Seems like the Montego Bay might be cheaper this year than the Rainbow was last year, now I just hope they don't have black, metallic wallpaper at Montego.

Slim, here's more of what you asked for.  Rooms are prepaid at time of reservation; my visa account has already been charged for today's reservation.  "Cancellation Policy: Forfeiture of Deposit."  However, as we've seen on this site before, there always seems to be someone looking to buy a room at the last minute, and there's always someone that's made a reservation and then they can't make the event.

New for this year:  "For your convenience we (Montego) have implemented a resort fee to create more value for our guests (charged at check-in).  The resort fee is $6.00 plus tax per night per room and includes the following:  complimentary Wi-Fi ($7.95 value); complimentary transportation between the casinos; complimentary access to the gym at Montego Bay; complimentary in-room coffee."  :?  :x :-(

Seems like we're already paying a fair enough price without that extra stab in the back, er wallet.

I don't like the high prices for the event but can live with that, but ....

.... Rooms are prepaid at time of reservation; my visa account has already been charged for today's reservation.  "Cancellation Policy: Forfeiture of Deposit."  However, as we've seen on this site before, there always seems to be someone looking to buy a room at the last minute, and there's always someone that's made a reservation and then they can't make the event.....

... when you can't cancel within 24 hours and get your money back that is going too far.  I mean you can make a reservation at about any motel in the U.S. and cancel within 24 hours or less and not loose your money.  If they have charged your card and everyone else now they have all that money for 6 months to invest and make money off of.  Think about the income off of that.

About some looking to buy a room at the last minute.  Sure, but one of these days the event will rain out again as in the past and then try and give that room away.  Do you think they won't rent the room out that you paid for but aren't in?

In the past the Red Garter has let us cancel at any time and not forfeit the money for the remaining nights and last year when we weren't able to arrive until Sunday they move our room charges from Thursday and started them on Sunday.  Not sure what is going to happen with them this year though.  We made online reservations there last Sept. before they shut that down.  We have the rooms but still don't know what they are going to charge us as they are doing a re-model and are going to change their rates.  They are still not taking new reservations as of the other day,

Admins / Moderators:

May I suggest that this thread be moved out of the SW 2013 discussion, and possibly be merged with the SW 2014 thread that is taking place in parallel on the Bonneville General Chat forum?

Thanks for your consideration.

Okey-dokey. I'll move it/create a proper thread, all on its own, later on.  I've gotta do a bit ofengraving right now.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Last year I had a non-smoking room reserved at the Montego, when I got there they only had smoking room and promised to
move me to a non smoker...it never happened...then I needed to stay 2 more days and the room rate offered in the middle of speedweek dropped to $109. I overheard them offering it to the person next to me. But they would not do the same to me. So on my way home I called American Express,
explained the situation, they opened a dispute, the hotel never answered, I got my money back!

Seems to me they need to look up the definition of complimentary. .

Amex is really good about that kind of thing - much better than any of the banks dealing Visa or MasterCard.

2006, I had an issue with a Jurys Inn in Dublin - Amex handled it before we got to Galway.  2008, someone grabbed my number in Nashville and charged up an unauthorized political donation to Romney on my card - one phone call and the issue was handled.  2009, a screw-up in Sudbury, Ontario, the hotel had an agreement with Amex - HOT TUB UPGRADE IN THE ROOM.  Last Christmas, someone got ahold of the number in Russia and tried to buy plane tickets - they stopped it, called me and sent me a new card - and it arrived THE NEXT DAY.

Don't leave home without it.

And I won't book a hotel room or a flight on any other card.

I hate the add ons to the already ridiculous rates some hotels charge.  I was in Dallas recently and had prepaid my room through Hotels.com.  Afterwards the hotel charges my card $40 plus for parking.  I explained that I didn't use parking and they took it off.  Back to canceling hotel charges, I'm not sure you can cancel a prepaid room six months later.  In most cases you would have paid the bill off and even AMEX could balk.  I am wondering if getting trip interruption coverage might be more effective, "it rained and we canceled our trip"?

Regarding full payment up-front for Speed Week rooms.

I'll tell you when it will get ugly. When we have a Speed Week that will have to be cancelled due to weather or salt conditions. Hundreds of rooms that were paid for and not used. The sh.t is really going to hit the fan. If all of us would band together and file suits in small claims courts, or be a party to class action lawsuit, the casino's won't ever use this practice again.
Title: Re: Hotel reservations for Speedweek 2014
Post by: edinlr on March 01, 2014, 01:59:56 PM
I think the hotels have the gouging part covered by that card you see on the back of the door that lists their maximum rate.  As for special event rates, it is pretty much the same whether you are talking about the Daytona 500, Speed Week, Sturgis, or even a ski trip at Christmas.  If you book and pay for it, you are strictly at the hotel's mercy to cancel or refund your money.  As long as the places at Wendover have more customers and than rooms, they will continue to charge what they want.  Sadly there probably isn't enough demand the rest of the year to justify a bunch of Comfort Inns or Holiday Inn Expresses to be built out there.  Class actions only seem to benefit the lawyers who put them together, the rest of us would probably only get a voucher for a meal at a casino buffet.  Small claims might be a possibility, but I am guessing the language in the agreement would get the hotels out of it.

Jeez, you don't suppose a Nevada lawyer would put the squeeze on us suing a casino do you? He might end up sleeping with the fish's in Lake Tahoe if he didn't.

We've just booked rooms at the Montego. Smoking (all that was available) 2 kings in the room - $1600 NZD for Thurs night to Tues night. At least we know we've got a bed. Last time I was there the tent at "the bend" got blown away !! The "resort" fee also grates as anyone else supplies that as part of the room rate!! Never mind, in the overall scheme of things, it's just part of the deal. Wouldn't be the same, not getting screwed by the casinos.

Well - for those of us that  spend US $ -- that $1600 NZ converts to something around $1375 US.  Not a big deal, but maybe -- just maybe -- someone on this side of the world would have had a heart attack seeing that amount.  Now he'd just have a heart seizure.

These "resort fees" are the latest scams.  They're not included in the advertised fares, but must be paid.  We found this out in a recent road trip as we were coming thru Vegas mid-week and searched a "deal".  Found the Rio for $29/night, reserved it, and then paid a $25 daily resort fee.  Still a good deal.  Better than the Wendover SpeedWeek rates.

I've got to agree that the $200+ rates are extreme, but for a "vacation spot", they're maybe average.  Still can't see the ocean from the rooms.  And the cancellation fees -- that's the biggest (non)crime!

I got a room in Wells, NV for I believe about $275 for 7 days during Speedweek.  It seems like I can live with the 60 mile trip to save $1000+

By the way, what is the common way hotel rooms are operated - I have already paid for the room, card charged, etc.  I will probably not make it there until the 3rd or 4th day of my paid reservation.  Do I still get my room, if I do not check in on the first day of my reservation?  I'm still happy to pay for the full 7 days as long as I can can check in whenever.

I think I'd tell them that the day you're supposed to check in.  And the next day.  And check to see if the covers are mussed when you check in.  Wells has a one-hour industry going on that you may not want to be a part of.

Isn't that the reason you go to Wells?

They probably have different policy's so best to check but last year we were suppose to check in at the Red Garter on Thursday night.  Thursday we were still working on the car at my place so called and they moved us to Friday.  Friday, still working on car so they moved us to Sat.  Sat still working buy able to leave that night and get to Price, UT so Red Garter moved us to a Sunday start.  I'm sure they still rented the room Thur-Fri-Sat  :-D but we didn't pay those nights.

Like John said above once there we were able to cancel with a 1 days notice the remainder of the nights and Maria said that would hold true this year also.  I don't know if they had the 1 week cancel last year or not.  I'm wondering if for some reason the event was canceled you could pay the first night and then cancel the remainder nights or roll them over to World of Speed or World Finals.  I didn't ask,

Sum

I've stayed at the Bonneville Motel for about the past 10 years but during last year the Pakistani's bought it and threw out all the reservations made last year. Now I have no room. I've called all over town and everything is booked. I hope one of my racing friends has an extra room they can give up this year otherwise I guess Cam, Jessi and I are sleeping under a bridge this year.

I'll announce this here -- and maybe start a thread all by itself, too.

Nancy got in touch with Mike Crawford today and Mike confirms that YES, there will be the same free camping at the site for the new Museum as there has been for the past couple of years.

I've been sent a couple of requests for this information already this spring, so take it and make your plans now.

We'll be thinking about having Salt Talks there again this year, too.  If you've got comments or suggestions about Salt Talks -- please let me know.  Attendance has been down for the past two years.  Any ideas why that's so?

Slim, a lot of us work on our cars (in my case TRUCK and race car) until they run us out of the pits.  At best We are filthy (dirty too!) bleeding and dragging our asses to the Tow Rig.
As much as I enjoy ogling Nancy's wonderful "art work" and visiting with everyone, I usually need a shower and food followed by sleep.
Maybe I need to break a day earlier..............................   :-P :-P :-P  One Run

I am sure there will be plenty of engines that don't get together by early August, so you will have plenty of offers for rooms.
