Title: GNRS Grand National Roadster Show 2014
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on October 30, 2013, 08:47:23 PM
We're discussing the upcoming show enough on this and that thread - that I'll start one for just the show.  Tell us if you're going to Pomona (24-26 January 2014), if you're taking a vehicle or looking forward to seeing one or another, who's going with you, where you're staying and who's buying the drinks, and so on.

Nancy and I plan to be there to represent landracing.com.  Stop by for a visit and maybe to buy a bit of the swag that we'll have at our "booth".

I am planning to drive down for the weekend. Just so far it looks like Poteet and Main, Treit and Davenport, Rob Freyvogel NACA 6600, and Danny Thompson will have both the Challenger 1 and the Challenger 2 which he is getting read for an assault on the wheel driven record. Any body know if the Vesco Turbinator will be there??? That would really make it complete for the present cars looking for the 500 mph mark.

The show is divided into 3 sections: The Future, The Present and The Past.

Ron Main told me that Treit & Davenport, Rob Freyvogle NACA 6600 and Danny Thompson are in the Future section.

Then I have four days in San Diego at the SolidWorks World conference where I will be giving a presentation on CFD for scoops. This will be a follow up on my recent scoop article in Bonneville Racing News.

Being only a 6 hour drive from here I might make it over there. Would love to see the GNRS for the first time plus go check out the NHRA museum again. Its been over 10 years since Ive been there and they didnt have as many LSR cars there at the time.

Wife and I plan on being there for Friday and Saturday and then spending time visiting friends in So. Cal. We might also make a quick trip over to Vegas.

Looking forward to seeing all the cars!

Woody,
" This will be a follow up on my recent scoop article in Bonneville Racing News." Any chance you could run a copy of this article on Landracing? I don't happen to subscribe to "Bonneville Racing News" (and I don't know why!) so I missed it and am sure many of us would love to read it.

Thanks for the joggle of my elbow, Rex.  I checked just now and yes, the link to the BRN (in our Links page) does work, but no, it does not take you to an "e-version" of the magazine.  I think I'll ask Wendy if she'd let us post the articles here.  I know we've put Bill Hoddinott's work here a few times and probably others, too.  I'd be willing to allow a few weeks - a month? - to go by between when the issue hits our mailboxes and when I put it on the site - - so we don't steal readers from the paper version.

I'll let you folks know how it goes.  Thanks again.

Since it only comes out 7 times a year I'll bet a lot of people would wait the month and that would probably for sure hurt her.  I doubt that she like you isn't getting rich from this LSR deal  and I'd for sure hate to loose her paper or your site.  Guys just subscribe to the magazine and keep donating here  :-),

FREUD

Since this is suppose to be a Century of Speed, I am hoping the first 80 years have a good showing of Cars and motorcycles. The current cars can be seen anytime IMO, but there are a lot of old cars that are still around that no one ever sees anymore. The future display should be fun to look at for the same reason as the old cars, in that not many have been seen in person. JMO.

Tom G.

PS. Correction the book is a Century of Speed, and the GNRS theme is the Need for Speed.

For most of us it only takes one trip.
People ask me why we do this all the time. I tell them that there is some microbe that lives in the salt and when you visit the salt on specific weeks, they come out of the salt and get into your ears and then make their way straight to your brain. These little microbes have voices and the continually whisper to you"come back, come back, come back to the salt". Just like the X files and there's no escaping these little buggers.

Hey Dynoroom,

You would think ... it would be impossible for Anyone who has any connection to Bonneville and Lakesters

that they wouldn't know the potential on the new Liner of "Fast Freddie" Dannenfelzer

Running in the high 300's ... isn't he the fast open wheel car ?

So his liner should be at the top of ANY list of 500 mph possible cars..

Since he did run 387? in believe in his Lakester.

Currently, he is the car to listen too... just like the Markleys, Teague, and the Whites were..

Pure hot rod and the the sound of power

The recently restored Gyronaut X-1 is honored to be there.  2014 marks its 50th anniversary since it was built and would have been Alex Tremulis' 100th year since he was built...

Wow! I can't get over the similarities of the fuselage shapes between the Carbiliner and the Gyronaut X1. Fifty years apart. As God is my witness, I don't ever remember seeing the X1 until our car was 75% done. Well I hope he is looking down from heaven with a smile on his face cheering us on.

Yes !!!! I went to the salt first time in 2008  (Speedweek)  strictly on a engineering recon mission for an client of mine. I happened to be in the pit lane closest to the track talking with Keith Turk and I heard this hellacious roar coming down the track. Sent a shiver up my spine and said to myself right there" oh, I got to get me some of that!" That sound may have actually activated those microbes I was speaking of as I have known people that went to to the salt on an off week and never developed that mental illness that we have . LOL!

Rob, there's a good reason you recognize the shape!  Here's yet another 1964 version of the Gyronaut:  This one was done for Ab Jenkins (The Spirit of Ab Jenkins) as a four-wheeler for the 24-hour record on the 10 mile circle at Bonneville.  If you take off the front wheels (they had exposed tops to see the tire wear), and remove the side wing (used to counteract the outward forces going around in circles for reduced tire wear), it really looks eerily similar!  Alex chose this shape for the Gyronaut from his 40+ years of streamlining cars and wind tunnel tests, including supersonic aircraft at Wright Field during WWII, Frank Lockhart's Stutz Blackhawk wind tunnel tests from the 1920's, and his pioneering work with wind tunnel testing passenger cars in the 1950's with Ford.  Although the Gyronaut never (yet) made it into a wind tunnel, the Gyronaut's shape was based upon his decades of prior wind tunnel tests whirling around in his head that finally made it out the tip of his airbrush.  You've taken a totally scientific approach and ended up in the same ballpark.  Would he be happy?  You can rest assured that he'd be one of your biggest cheerleaders!!!  He often ended his speeches with "Someday the future may finally catch up to the past".  Well, it looks like the future has not only caught up, but leapfrogged the past...

We can't wait to see your car in person!  At some point we've got to photograph the two together.  Hope to see you guys at the GNRS!!!

Well, well -- speaking about shot glasses is speaking  my language.  If I can get the artwork that's on one of 'em -- I can make up a set for the WGBar*.  We did the shot glasses for the 200 MPH Club banquet '12, and then the glasses for a 30-year high school reunion for ECTA racer Scott Griswold  Dan  or anyone - send me the artwork, please, or maybe a photo of the art if you don't have an original.  I'll bill Mike M.

*I presume you meant to say the White Goose Bar, right?

As I think I've already said, Nancy and I intend to be at the show.  I'll do what I can to wander around the place (when our booth duty allows me to be gone) and photograph many of the vehicles - and then post them on this site.  No, I won't be able to show all of them, but I'll do what I can to let you see more than just a few of the top-rated/judged cars.  And even though most of us have seen the LSR cars that'll be there -- what the heck - - it's always worth seeing them again.

By the way, landracing.com will have a booth at the GNRS to make the general public more aware of the site -- and maybe to gather some $$ in donations or maybe even a major sponsor or two.  If you're at the Show -- stop by and say howdy, especially if you're one of the many that haven't come to our pits at Bville or somehow otherwise have met us.  Nancy will be outfitted as she should be at a car show - if I have anything to say about it.

Rob,

OUCH. That is not right IMO. You guys are the stars of the show, and that no one has offered you any compensation is outrageous. Maybe instead of giving out the first 2000 books for free, they should have charged for them so you long distance guys could at least get some gas money.

If you are interested, the least I can do is offer to buy you and your team dinner one night. Tell me what night works for you and it will be my pleasure.

Tom,

Respectfully, one has nothing to do with the other. This is the Grand National Roadster Show. In fact, John Buck donated the hall to the Bonneville folks free of charge so that they didnt have to pay to display like everyone else at the show does. The people that display their vehicles here have nothing to do with with the Century of Speed book that will be sold for $20 in the Save The Salt booth. These books have already been paid for with private money by the sponsors. This is so $40,000 can be donated to Save The Salt so that we all can still have a place to race. People are doing this out of the goodness of their hearts, and not making a dime. Please dont unnecessarily rile people on a forum up with incomplete facts on the situation. It's not fair to the organization and the positive growth of our sport.

Thanks.

Tom,
Brandon and  I will take you up on that dinner!
This is a once in lifetime deal of us. I am very honored to be invited. I am definitely not a car show guy but this should be fun, I look at the money spent on this trip as marketing expense.
We are still looking for financial parter to come on board even if I I have to give up the drivers seat. Marketing cost money. No way around that.

For those of you going to Los Angeles, remember many of the various hot rod shops ala SoCal Speed Shop, etc all do open houses before the show.  Hopefully a local club guy will chime in as to what will be on the "tour" this year and post details here for everyone in the Bonneville community

Also there are some great car museums about Los Angeles:

http://www.petersen.org/
http://www.nethercuttcollection.org/
http://www.mullinautomotivemuseum.com/

And remember the NHRA museum is right next to the GNRS show:

http://museum.nhra.com/

If you know of other "must visit" places -- post for those out of town who are attending upcoming!

My enthusiasm about going on this trip was so contagious, my Dad decided to join me.  We are flying out there Thursday morning.  Probably going to the NHRA Museum, after eating some lunch on Thursday.  Then going to the GRNS all day Friday, until they kick us out.  I'll definitely be picking up a copy of the Century of Speed book too!!!

I used so many exclamation marks in this post, because I am that excited!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks.

Hello Sandee,

I think you misunderstood me, I don't expect the GNRS to pay for this exhibit and I applaud John Buck for donating the hall and thought that was very gracious of him. We will address my concern about helping racers get to the show later.

Since you seem to be in the know, how about answering a few questions for me?

1. Is this Century of Speed Book and it organization, a for profit or non profit organization? I did not see anywhere where this is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and that buying a book would be tax deductible, not to be confused with donating $20 to STS at the GNRS to get one of the first 2000 books.

2. According to it's press releases there are only going to be 2000 books made in the first edition, which will be donated to Save the Salt. What happens if this book goes into multiple  printings, do the profits from that get donated to Save the Salt also, or where would the money go?

3. According to the website "The book can also be ordered online for $49.95 plus shipping after the show." Does  $49.95 get donated to STS, since donors have already paid for the book?

Thanks for any clarity,

Tom G.

Rob,

OUCH. That is not right IMO. You guys are the stars of the show, and that no one has offered you any compensation is outrageous. Maybe instead of giving out the first 2000 books for free, they should have charged for them so you long distance guys could at least get some gas money.

Tom G.
Hello Sandee,

I think you misunderstood me, I don't expect the GNRS to pay for this exhibit and I applaud John Buck for donating the hall and thought that was very gracious of him. We will address my concern about helping racers get to the show later.

Tom G.

This definitely was my misunderstanding  ;)  It sounded like you wanted one of the vendors from the Save The Salt booth to help out with travel expenses with proceeds from their book, instead of donating 100% of that money to Save The Salt so that we all could still have a place to race in the future. I apologize for that misunderstanding. It would be like asking Hot Dog On A Stick (another vendor) to pay for people to get there. I realize it sounds absurd when put that way, but that is how I understood it. In any event, I am excited to see the living history on display for us all to enjoy and feel like the exhibitors are proud to be there.

3. According to the website "The book can also be ordered online for $49.95 plus shipping after the show." Does  $49.95 get donated to STS, since donors have already paid for the book?

I am not sure how "in the know" I am. I suppose I just take the time to do the legwork and go right to a source and ask questions if I dont know answers.

I am sure you realize that an embossed hardcover book with 300 full color pages isnt going to be profitable selling for $20. Buying a book would not be tax deductible, as they are not a 501(c)3. For your $20, you get a beautiful history book as well as knowing your $20 went straight to the salt and not to lawyers, travel fees, hotels, etc. If you choose not to buy the book, that is certainly your prerogative but negatively coloring the book for others that might enjoy it is disappointing. It's a for profit company that is doing it's best to Save The Salt.

As said above, only 2000 books are printed right now. The sponsors that have paid into the book have covered just the first 2000 printings.
The books that sell for $49.95 plus shipping after the show still have the printing cost overhead to cover.  20% of every book sold for $49.95 goes directly to STS. The writer hasnt been paid, and will not be paid until the first 2000 books sell out and the orders for the $49.95 books start to come in. Everyone involved has been more than charitable with this project to see it come to fruition. I think it's so noble.

I have read your posts and see that you are very against the book, the producer, and things he has done out of the goodness of his heart for the organization. I dont know why you seem bitter about it all, and I dont know that I want to know, but much more can be accomplished if we were to all work together as a team and not try to bring each other down. We are all working for the same cause.

I will be there Thursday through Sunday and cant wait to meet you all :)

Hello Sandee,

Thank you for answering my questions. You are entitled to your opinions, just as anyone else on this forum is.

Since you are pointing the finger at me for not liking the book, maybe you should look at this thread. It was started before I ever said anything about the book. And I must add that I have never ever read a History book that had ads in the book.
http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php/topic,13348.0.html

“Only 2000 books are printed right now. The sponsors that have paid into the book have covered just the first 2000 printings.”

According to the information on the website http://www.bonnevillecenturyofspeed.com  if you do the math for all the sponsorships sold (not including all the ads that were sold), you have raised over 4 times the money that will be given to STS by selling the first 2000 books.  Why not raise the price on the book for the show, and make more money for STS, if the book is as nice as you say, why not charge $40 each and make $70,000 for STS, and give $10,000 in gas cards to the owners of the vehicles in the show?

And yes I do think your organization( I see you donated) owes the racers some kind of compensation, without them there is no Century of Speed show. I don't understand the logic of spending $80 on a book and giving it away for $20, and not give compensation to the people and there vehicles that make up the show. Without the show there would not be many if any book sales, and everyone including STS loses.

Dave the owner of Hot Dog on a Stick gets it. I built a couple of his stores located in different Malls in the area, and he gave me over $100 in tickets for product from his stores for each store I did, for doing a good job. He was not stingy and appreciated what people did for him.

It looks like we've lost Land Speed Lady. It's really sad when one or more of us get into a pi**ing contest and we lose a valuable resource.

I'm not blaming you Desotoman. We all get a little abrasive at times or get focused on one thing and maybe bear down a little too hard on the subject.  I think I've probably been guilty of that myself. Patience isn't my strongest virtue. I've seen several valuable contributors drop out over the years because of comments made. As racers most of us have developed fairly thick skins, especially if we've done a little innovation, but there are others that haven't developed that tough hide and maybe we all should try to think about that before we get too harsh with our comments.

I don't have any opinion on the book, but I'm with Tom having deep skepticism when money is donated.

The U.S. Navy Veterans Association took $100,000,000 dollars and spent close to zero on veterans. All of the money went to the crook that promoted it.
He operated under an assumed name and took money for himself. If he had NOT done that, all of the transactions would have been legal. He paid himself a huge salary, along with many others. All legal. There is no set percentage that has to go to the named charity.

My preference is to donate direct dollars, not participate in a fund raiser. The Boy Scouts were having a yard sale fund raiser last weekend. Instead of trying to buy something, I just donated directly to the troop.

If you are going to donate, perform due diligence and make sure it is a 501(C) charity and check http://www.charitynavigator.org/ (http://www.charitynavigator.org/)

How much of your hard earned money do you want to pay to . . . nothing.

I don't get it.  There will be a book available in Jan. another later in the year.  Buy one or the other or both or neither.  Pretty simple.

I'm hoping to get one of the $20 ones myself and the other later.  If someone wants to pay for getting the book published out of their pockets and has adds in it and my $20 goes to Save the Salt that is fine with me.  I'll look at the pictures read the book and take from it what I can.  I do this every week with car related magazines that I receive.  At least it is one more book on land speed racing, not a lot of those as I don't get those every week.

Later I'll buy the second book most likely also.

Hope no one leaves the board over this,  like the availability of books on land speed racing there is also a shortage of people involved and we need them all to make this work in the long run,

Sum

As a racer who donated to the Book and has a vehicle that will be included the show, I would not accept $ from the show organizer beyond the free show passes they are giving us. The entire point of this is a fundraising effort for Save the Salt.

Lost in all of this is that it's the Grand National Roadster Show.  Not the Land Racing History Show.  Yes, they will get some additional attendance from the land speed racers -- some of us go there anyway.  Being a benevolent promoter, he's "giving" one of several buildings to the LSR racers.

{We displayed our then record-holding Street Roadster there a few years ago and paid a fee to exhibit it. (Won't do that again.)  It's my understanding that most exhibitors in the "Roadster" show are charged. And there's lots more categories than just roadsters.  So maybe the Save the Salt/Ron Main/Century of Bonneville/Whatever deal ain't so bad.}

At the Grand National Roadster Show 2014 you will be able to get the 302-page exhibition book - Bonneville - A Century of Speed. (Also order on-line at the site below) It will have a surprising, special price for visitors to the show! Bonneville books are few and far between, but this new exhibition book covers the collective history of Bonneville racing in a massive 302 page layout. Created to celebrate 100 years of Bonneville racing the book starts at the root of land speed racing in 1898 in France and quickly moves to America with a brief the Florida Speed Trials and to the first known racing on the lake in 1914, onward to the 2013 season.
Filled with grand images of the great Bonneville champions including Mickey Thompson, Donald Campbell, John Cobb, Ab Jenkins, the Burke family, the Latin's, the Lindsley's, Les Leggitt, Al Teague, Scott Guthrie or the Burkland's. But it's not just the headliners, this book will help you appreciate that the core of Bonneville is the greater land speed community who have raced on the lake all these years and you will close this book in awe at the wonderful historic collection LSR streamliners, the roadsters, the coupes, the production cars and the bikes displayed in its pages.
The impetus for this book came from Ron Main's upcoming Bonneville - A Century of Speed exhibition at the Grand National Roadster Show (Building-9) this coming January 24-26 at the Fairplex in Pomona, California.
The book which features 600 photos including the majority of the cars in the exhibition, is a fundraiser for the Salt Lay-down Project with Save the Salt, and all income from the numbered edition of just 2,000 copies goes directly to the fund. For those attending the show, there will be a very special price so be there to enjoy the exhibition, support the project and get your deluxe numbered-edition which we feel will sell-out very quickly. Hope to see you there! See a quick review of the book at: http://www.bonnevillecenturyofspeed.com/ (http://www.bonnevillecenturyofspeed.com/)

The City of Burbank 2.0 will be there and we have made arrangements to have the original engine that set the records in1952 on display with the car. The expense to get the car and ourselves to California is coming from our pockets and is actually more than getting it to the Salt Flats. That said, we made a commitment and we will do our best to honor it. If money gets raised to save the salt, thats a good thing. If the idea causes anyone to contribute directly that's a good thing too. I can only imagine 80 to 100 car owners asking for travel money from the promoters @ 4k each. For the west coast guys its not a big deal. When you are more than 2000 miles away it becomes a very big deal.
We are actively seeking help from anyone interested in being a patron but at the end of the day we may only have ourselves.
It's foolish to be mad at reality.

Thanks to the good graces of Larry Fisher of the Wally Parks NHRA Museum the Bonneville 200 MPH Club will have our winter meeting at 9:00 AM, Saturday January 25th. The meeting will be held in the Hall of Champions, turn left at the entrance desk. The meeting is open to all 200 MPH Club members who are at the GNRS. The agenda is general business and setting schedules for 2014 Club events.

The Club will also have a booth at the show near the rear entrance door. I have been helping Ron Main and we feel that this will be a fantastic show for Save the Salt and LSR in general. Believe it or not, there are still many people who do not know of LSR. This is your chance to educate the public.

I have a friend that does a lot of swap meet stuff. Things were slow at the big swap meet in Billings one year so he got a big tub and filled it with ice and beer. He had a big 5 gal bucket full of old rusty bolts that he sold for $1.00 each and you got a free beer with it. He had the most popular booth at the meet.

Why not talk to the organizers and see if there's any possibilities of working the problem out with them. It's very possible you won't be able to because it puts a wedge in the door for others to ignore the proper arrangements. If that's the case then you'll have to use word of mouth or some other form of communication and do any transactions off the premises. It's a pain, but it's better than being run off after spending all the time and effort to get out there.

The answer may be to have an agent in the area but out of the immediate show property.

Enjoy the trip and the show.

Pete

I don't think there's a problem -- because we won't be selling anything, Stainless' suggestion about old shirts notwithstanding.  And my inventory of rusty bolts is a treasure of mine -- that's already been bequeathed to some of my special heirs.  I'm not about to let the stuff go (not to mention pistons with holes, crooked rods, rusted chains) to just anyone. :-)

I know you don't, but I do

Oh - so you mean that if someone donates to the site I should give him shirts, glasses AND some rusty bolts?  Well, maybe, but I'll have to limit the number of bolts each donor gets.  Those things have value to many of us, yo know.

Say what you will, but I could not live - nor want to live - someplace where the weather is as boring as "sunny and warm" every day.  I couldn't enjoy living someplace where the only necessary choice in clothing is "what color shorts will I wear today".

I say boring -- because it is.  Where's the fun in every day the same, month in and month out?

I could go on.  Sorry for the rant, because I know (many of) you won't understand my point of view.  At least I know that I'm not the only one out here.

What a fun (?) adventure -- getting here to the Motel 6.  As we pulled into the parking space by the room I looked at a pickup parked next to where we were headed -- and said "That's Glen Barrett's truck."  I wasn't positive 'til I saw the Turbinator license plate surround and the Vesco crew lettering.

It was about11 hours getting here - six in the air and the rest farting around at LAX trying to get to the car rental place - and then enjoying the LA traffic from there to this motel.  Show - tomorrow!  C U there.

We're parking the 28 Mercury inside, between the buildings on Sunday.  You've got to pre-enter, but the $50 includes two people and works out better than paying for two and then parking, too.  Can bring your "lunch", too.

We're here.   And so are a bunch of very familiar folks, from Tom Bryant to Mike Cook (both father and son) and Steve Strupp and so on.  We've spent the past few hours walking around and howdying folks, and taking a few photos.  Then I was ready to put the photos on the site -- and had a "wooops!" minute.  I sure hope we've got the cord for downloading photos from camera to 'puter.

But anyway -- we're here.  We've got one (of the three) "Century of Speed" books that's available right now.  They go on sale later today -- 6PM.  It's at least as good a book as you could want -- maybe as good as you could dream.  Get one if you can.

I'm going to go look at what else is going on on the site, but if you've got questions (at least ones that I can answer) - go ahead and ask.  I'll check now and then.

Thanks to Nancy (for lots of stuff, yes, I admit it) for finding the cable that I couldn't locate.  Here are a few photos of what's what at the 2014 GNRS Century of Speed Show.

The first land speed record set at Bonneville was by this car -- a Blitzen Benz, driven by Teddy Tetzlaff in 1914.  This is the one that got it done first.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030193_zps97905aaf.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030193_zps97905aaf.jpg.html)

You noticed the exhaust system, right?  Looked kinda big for a four cylinder, right?  Take a look at this engine room:

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030196_zps9697bcd0.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030196_zps9697bcd0.jpg.html)

1,300 cubic INCHES, not centimeters.  INCHES.  The valves were about 4" diameter.  Keep looking at the marvels of the day.

How do you hook up massive power to the rear wheels?  Easy -- big azz chain drive.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030197_zps8ab23fc6.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030197_zps8ab23fc6.jpg.html)

And while you're looking at the chain, note the high-end brake cables, actuated by big-azz levers:

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030199_zps15dfb656.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030199_zps15dfb656.jpg.html)

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030200_zps483c702b.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030200_zps483c702b.jpg.html)

And how does the driver know what the motor's doing?  He reads the tach.  I think I got enough so you can see the tachometer goes all the way up to 2,000 rpm.  Can you imagine that?

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030202_zpse4ef54b6.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030202_zpse4ef54b6.jpg.html)

That's it for now.  Next it's find some electricity to charge this 'puter battery.  I know where that cable is -- just gotta find an outlet that's got something going. . .

I's seven Thursday evening.  We've walked around and taken a flock of pictures and howdyed a bunch --  a big bunch -- of people we usually don't see except in August, September, and October.  You oughta be here, that's for sure.

We've been hanging around for the big reception with cake and wine (or was it beer and cheese?) and stuff -- and it looks like it's not going to happen, so we've decided to hit the road, go find some fine cosine (cuisine?) and then go to the motel.  Why the motel?  Get your minds out of the gutter, boys, it's because it's way easier to get all of tonight's photos loaded to this Forum from a room where it's quiet and there's electricity.

Come back in an hour or two -- or we'll see you in the morning.

Here it is - an hour or two later.  I'm going to post these and let you figure out what's what.  Ask if you've got questions, as today was the day of setup.  Tomorrow the owners and drivers and owner/drivers and everyone should be there - and maybe I can get answers for you.  By the way -- the conditions in there are not right for our little camera.  Too little light for shooting without flash, and too far from camera to car to have the flash work.  Sorry -- I'll try some more later.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030259_zpsd78e8d59.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030259_zpsd78e8d59.jpg.html)

Before you look at the car -- look at what these folks are doing.  To make the car look not so out-of-place in a building -- they're spread bag after bag of (water softener, but what the heck, it is salt) salt on the tarp under the car.

Jeff's car, and then Jeff and Nancy:

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030250_zps39b18620.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030250_zps39b18620.jpg.html)

Note the art on the front of the Turbinator.  I took this photo right side up - and the software here has made it crooked.  Turn your screen on the side, please.

I meet Freud at the show and we jawed for a while. Great guy.
I took some pictures of the Target 550 car. As I was doing it I could see the exact same photo in my head from all the years of watching this build. It was great to see the car and all of the guys in person.

Gene Winfield came to a Sidewinders meeting a few years ago with a slide show from Detroit.
While this rapid fire slide show was going on Gene was giving running, non-stop descriptions of every car.
I'm lucky to remember lunch yesterday.

I realized what was wrong with this show. This is the first time I've seen this many cars and they didn't have dirt or salt on them!

You quickly realize that there are few young people at the show. I never saw so many cotton heads.

Ok, i was one of them.

LOL, Dean the little hair I have left falls into that category, I guess that is why there is no Senior Discount at these shows.

I got to the show about 4 PM and made my way around the grounds and got to building 9 around 6:30 PM. I got to talk to the Target 550 team and catch up on what has been going on with the car. I also got to meet Rob with the Carbinite liner, and had a nice chat with him. Not many people in the building when I got there so I missed seeing and talking with many. Good news was that I could take pictures without anyone in the way. LOL.

Saturday - and what's going on?  Well, so far most of the folks we've talked to today are regulars -- racers we've seen at the salt and on the site -- and people that lurk on the site but don't post and don't go to Bville.  But we've sure seen lots of 'em.  We're here, if you didn't know, to promote the site - raise the awareness of the public that they can get a bit of the salt flats/land speed racing experience via landracing.com.  And we're encouraging them to donate a bit of $$ to keep things going.  by gum -- it's working, and that's why I'm making this post -- to let everyone know that Nancy and I appreciate the support and interest we're seeing.  Thanks.

By the way, we got a few of the new Century of Speed books that debuted at this show.  We're planning on keeping them to use as gifts or auction prizes or something for later on, so if you don't get one now -- and I just got told by Ron Main that all of the 2000 that were here are gone -- stick around the site and sometime in the next few months you'll have a chance to get one for your very own.

Deep enough for now.  Thanks again for your support.

Slim,

Thanks for the great pics!!     For photos that come out sideways, edit the original in a photo editor (I use photobucket) by rotating in the needed direction, then save as a new image.    Substitute the edited photo to the posting.    The LSR site may shrink the photo to fit, but the orientation should be correct.

Thanks again for the photos of the show!!

Wouldn't you know it -- here it is the last day of the show -- and we found another car we hadn't seen.  This car's builder wandered past our table this morning and asked if we'd take and post a shot of it -- because it's in a different building.  And therefore, without further ado -- here's John Weatherwax's (I think that was his name) '34 Ford, #114:

Jim Knapp and his Barnyard Bearcat are here.  I'll get the car's picture in a little while, but here's what's on the back of his race trailer.  Does the sentiment sound about right?

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030272_zps50a9e093.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030272_zps50a9e093.jpg.html)

A few of Nancy's choices to photograph, like this one -- like a car her family had when she was a kid (not all that long ago for her):

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030274_zps595c55ea.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030274_zps595c55ea.jpg.html)

My family did not have a Caddy like this (although we did have a '54 Coupe deVille):

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030275_zps956dab9c.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030275_zps956dab9c.jpg.html)

And then there are the silly/cool/fun kid's scooters and prams - of which we've seen a bunch in the past few days.  One like this, for instance:

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/2014%20Century%20of%20Speed%20at%20GNRS/P1030280_zps924f425c.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/2014%20Century%20of%20Speed%20at%20GNRS/P1030280_zps924f425c.jpg.html)

Ok - back to the show.  We're still getting a good number of visitors at the booth here, and some of them have been kind enough to donate a few bucks to the cause.  I think we'll be able to stay online for at least another couple of days - maybe weeks. . .

I keep finding more to show youse guys.  Here, for instance, is an inside-the-canopy series of Jim Knapp's 3 Suzuki engined car.  It's kinda dark to show all of the motors, but look and you'll see 'em:

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030300_zps8998591d.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030300_zps8998591d.jpg.html)

I don't know if you know how he hooks engines to rear wheels, but -- it's a chain drive to a jackshaft to chains to the rear wheels independently.  Hunh?  Three engines hook to this jackshaft, and one chain per rear wheel takes the oooomph to the tires.  I think you can make out the labels in the second photo.  This part of the car was an issue at the Shootout a couple of years ago - when the jackshaft was a tad off balance, or maybe it was tweaked a few degrees.  Anyway, it was a few hours in the parking lot at Carquest -- and he was back and struggled, worked, tried -- and finally got the car to his goal of 300.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030301_zpse6577fb1.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030301_zpse6577fb1.jpg.html)

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030303_zpsaf4f9030.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030303_zpsaf4f9030.jpg.html)

Here's an interesting bike.  The new Triumph uses a pair of the big 3-cylinder "tractor" engines -- three cyl in line, gobs of torque - but the bike's build quality is something like a jewel.  Here's a shot showing both motors - could almost be a right-way mirror between one and the back -- it's that close.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030300_zps8998591d.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030300_zps8998591d.jpg.html)

And here's just one engine.  Nice job, hey?

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030293_zpsd82357cd.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030293_zpsd82357cd.jpg.html)

Ah, you've gotta love the silly sayings and slogans out at the salt (well, in this case, wherever people race).  This is by a roadster.  Look at the center panel - writing on the salt surface.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030282_zps8fb415c7.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030282_zps8fb415c7.jpg.html)

Back to coffee, folks.  Stay tuned - the show has five hours or so yet to run.  Thanks for your interest - and support.

My Dad and I had a great time at the show!!!  It was great to meet Slim, Mrs. Slim, Danny Thompson, and the Target 550 crew.  It was amazing to see all of those LSR cars, and the occasional sound of a car making a high speed pass was a nice touch.  So much history, and amazing craftsmanship.  I'm still going through the 1200+ pictures I took at the show, but I will post them up as soon as possible.

WHAT a great collection of LSR vehicles!!!
And great racers.

On the right is the guy who owns the motorcycle land speed record, Mike Akatiff, and on the left his good friend Sam Wheeler who wants to take it away with a 400 mph + run sometime in the future.  Good luck guys!!!

Thanks for the great pictures!!! My little Nikon pocket camera could not get the quality your pictures have. I am going to use the "Snipping Tool" function to steal a couple of your pics for my file.

A comment on John Weatherwax's roadster: John has only ran a the salt once, I think it was 2010 or 2011 and he ran right on the CGR record a few more tweeks and some more salt experiences and it will be a record holder. Lots of really great fab work and some very innovative ideas for a roadster. His number, 114, was given to him by Jack Underwood, proprietor of  Jack's Garage in Fountain Valley. Jack ran the 114 number for his years on the salt and John asked Jack if he could use it and it looks like there is a good chance that it will be on a record car again.

And I'll say right back to you -- that the highlight for us was how many folks we didn't know came up to us for a howdy-do.  We knew lots of youse guys, of course, but now and then it'd be someone that didn't look familiar.  And evidently we are well-known -- because a good number of the folks that greeted us would greet us by name -- and we had no clue as to who he/they were - - at least 'til they gave me the name they use on the Forum.  That's usually the giveaway.

There must have been hundreds of visitors to the landracing.com booth.  We were out there to not only see if we could raise some money for the site* but also to raise awareness of the site to the rest of the public that doesn't know much about LSR.  I think we did that pretty well.  We handed out lots of literature and business cards, all with the URL on 'em, so we might get some new visitors.

*By the way, we were the guests of the show, and that means we did not have to pay for the booth nor most of the trip expenses.  Your donations did not go to paying for Nancy and me to go globe-trotting on a junket.  That would have been kinda unfair, trying to make up all of the costs by asking you for a handful of dollars.  Thanks very much to our benefactor (whom I won't name just now).

Further note:  Our main goal out there was to try to find a main sponsor for landracing.com -- one (or a few) big names that'd pay year round for the privilege of having their company name on the home page and here and there through the site.  We didn't find one for sure, but a few of the vendors there did show some potential interest.

Right now it's back to the snow plowing for me.  Thanks again for all of the visits.

The GNRS was awesome and words to describe the show are hard to come by, it's like going to Bonneville the first time after hearing about it for years, you have to live it as when bitten by salt fever it lasts forever. Seeing many old friends and making some new ones was just great. The street rod and custom car people were blown away and the LSR dispaly drew many of their people to Bldg.9. I took probably 200 pictures that I haven't had a chance to down load as yet. All of us on the Vesco team had many visitors that totally loved the Turbinator II.

And Nancy and I want to thank Glen not only for being there to tell so much history and information to so many, but also for taking our extra landracing.com swag (engraved shot glasses) home with him so he can get them to us at SpeedWeek.

I missed one guy and wish he could have been there to see everyone and all of the bikes and cars, but I suppose that flying fro Heilbronn, Germany to LAX and back for a three day show would have been a bit much for our good friend Pork Pie.  PP, you would have been beside yourself upon seeing everything and everyone.  We missed you.

A quick aside here:  We had the trip from Hades (not quite as bad as hell) getting home from LAX.  Three planes were late, they told us we'd miss our flight from O'Hare to home - but we didn't), our luggage didn't get home 'til one day after we did, the gas heater and the wood boiler were out of service when we got home, the key didn't work in the lock at the house (so I had to walk, wearing street shoes) through the thigh-deep snow to get to a door that wasn't locked -- just completely blocked by snow.  All is fixed now and the luggage was delivered to our house by the airline - this morning, a day and a half after we landed.  I think maybe we won't go away during the winter again. :-D

It's one of those salt and pepper deals, I welcome their interest, The BNI/SCTA needs their money, we need new blood, but I sure hope they all come in motorhomes.       Bob

Jon & Nancy,

thank you for this kind words......sure....I wished I had a chance to be there.....seeing all the great racers on the place and hanging around relax...instead of the rush at the salt....

but the time....short after the Christmas vacation....the expenses to get there...especially that I'm planning to be at the salt for the July test meet from the USFRA....I like to see the maiden runs of some great new competitor....all this got me to the decision to stay home...by the way....the long trip only for this three days....I done so crazy things before....life is too short to do not......but I have to keep my focus also on the following events during 2014.....

But thanks to Landracing.com....I could go around and see all the racers....wow.....this was a fantastic show.....and it was wonderful that a lot of us could enjoy this show.

Thanks to all who took care for all this pictures of this show here on this website....great

Good to see you at the show, Ray.  It'd been too long a time.  We saw you -- ready for this, folks? -- we saw Ray taking photographs.  Can you imagine that?

I hope we get to see a few of them soon.  We did enjoy seeing you, though.  And everyone, for that matter.

Thanks, Slim.  'Twas good to see ya both at the show.  And yes, I plead guilty as charged; taking photos (maybe I shoulda paid for 'em first?)

I'll get show photos on my server asap...right now I'm in Beatty, Nv.  I'm also guilty of truancy; I don't wanna go back to the cold weather.  Death Valley has been so nice and warm...but I'm runnin outta clean socks, so I spose I better head in a homeward direction.  Once I get there, I'll have a ton of photos of everything from street rods to streamliners to ghost towns to abandoned gold mines and old volcanic cones/craters.

Oh, yeah.  This kinda slowed me down a bit today.

Ghost towns around Death Valley?  Didja happen to visit Ballarat?  If you didn't you have missed something truly memorable - - because it is the home and the burial place of Charles Ferge, better known as the first Seldom Seen Slim.  If you go there you're invited to visit in the "store" and you can even see his portrait and outdoors, his gravesite.

Say hi for us.  We haven't been there in about 10 years.  I imagine Slim is still dead and buried.

If you're in Beatty, let me be your tour guide . . .

Don't miss the beer bar that's near the main intersection.  Looks kinda like a log cabin or something.  Got really pretty good pizza (for being made in an oven on top of the bar) and lotsa car parts strewn around the walls.  Seems a lot of the factories test in the Valley and leave souvenirs behind.  I was told that they asked what BMW was that one offa, and were told it hadn't came out yet.

And don't miss the photo op at the Angels Flight brothel entrance.  A dual-engine plane crashed, either coming or going, and has been along side the road for years.

Lots to see coming back from SpeedWeek if you take a path less traveled.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/2014%20Century%20of%20Speed%20at%20GNRS/P1030276_zpscd9d916c.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/2014%20Century%20of%20Speed%20at%20GNRS/P1030276_zpscd9d916c.jpg.html)

I know that John is to modest to post this himself but he (his roadster that is) won the "Best Engineered" award at the GNRS! His build is in the "Build Diary" section and he justly deserves the award.

Rex

Jim Knapp and his Barnyard Bearcat are here.  I'll get the car's picture in a little while, but here's what's on the back of his race trailer.  Does the sentiment sound about right?

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030272_zps50a9e093.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030272_zps50a9e093.jpg.html)

A few of Nancy's choices to photograph, like this one -- like a car her family had when she was a kid (not all that long ago for her):

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030274_zps595c55ea.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030274_zps595c55ea.jpg.html)

My family did not have a Caddy like this (although we did have a '54 Coupe deVille):

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/P1030275_zps956dab9c.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/P1030275_zps956dab9c.jpg.html)

And then there are the silly/cool/fun kid's scooters and prams - of which we've seen a bunch in the past few days.  One like this, for instance:

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/2014%20Century%20of%20Speed%20at%20GNRS/P1030280_zps924f425c.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/2014%20Century%20of%20Speed%20at%20GNRS/P1030280_zps924f425c.jpg.html)

Ok - back to the show.  We're still getting a good number of visitors at the booth here, and some of them have been kind enough to donate a few bucks to the cause.  I think we'll be able to stay online for at least another couple of days - maybe weeks. . .

There is a reason that it is called Death Valley.  During February of 2011 my wife and I were hiking in a remote canyon not far from Ballarat.  She went up over a rock outcropping and I went around it on a ledge.  She fell.  We were alone with no cell phone service.  I got her to the car, and then on to Ridgecrest Hospital.  After a night in the emergency room,(sitting and laying on chairs, not in a bed) we found out that she had a crushed vertebrae.  I managed to get her back home.  We had her fixed here, and she is fine today.  The result is, we still hike, but no longer in rough remote areas.  We are just to old.

Yeah..about 35+ yrs ago we were camping and exploring the Panamint Valley area with our dirt bikes and were riding up ''Goler wash which leads into Death Valley.'' been awhile, a few wild burrows and a little stream here and there. We came across a side road and some campers at a nice pool. There were giant rocks on each side of the road with a chain across it. The campers said the guy told them it was alright to go in, so in we went, 6 or 7 of us. Less than 1/2 mile this dude [ looks like a wild man] jumpin across these big boulders fires a shotgun on the road in front of us, we stop :-o that's when we noticed a cabin back in the rocks. Dude comes down says its Charlie Manson's cabin and had been having trouble with bikers vandalizing the place.  Not going to argue with a wild man with a shotgun I says ''all we want to do is turn around and get out of here'' Turned around and road into Death Valley a bit on Goler Wash
Pretty sure it was all BLM land back there but not going to argue with a lunatic.

In a bit I'll go live with the photos of the GNRS.  I have a little HTML coding to do and then it'll be ready to go.
