Gregg-
Never noticed you lived in Nashville. My in-laws live
between Nashville and Rocky Mount & my wife went
to RMHS. Stop on by sometime when you're rolling
through Winston Salem. The car is on the trailer and
we're ready to go.

Here is my photobucket link of some of today's bike and car tech inspection in Wilmington.

Weather was absolutely spectacular today! Around 80, no clouds, full sunshine.
I did not wear a hat so my bald noggin has a pretty good burn.....Could life be any worse?......Naaaaa!  :-D
This is a full meet with 175 cars and bikes and they were still inspecting when I left around 04:30.
Can't wait for the racing tomorrow!

Couple of cars that caught my attention: a steam powered liner as well as Dennis Zainfeld's turbine powered liner.

As usual, I hope you enjoy the pics!

Here is my photobucket link of some of today's bike and cars in tech, staging lanes, start line and at the 3/4 mile.

Like yesterday, weather was again absolutely spectacular! Around 80 with full sunshine for most of the day.

Racing was spectacular as well! Quite a number of bikes over 200 with the best of 243. There were also several cars over 200 as well.
Sean Motes in his BAD A$$ Caddy went 186 for his best speed ever! Man I love that car!

Dennis Zanefeld's TIII liner went and "easy" 102 on it's maiden voyage and will crank it up a little more tomorrow.
Steam Liner had issues this morning on the starting line and did not run. Issues were fixed and was towed back to staging around 2:30. I left around 5:30 so I don't know if it ran or not. We'll see what happens tomorrow.

SAVED THE BEST FOR LAST. Around 9:30, saw Rob, Brandon and crew coming up the return road with the Carbiliner. Pictures do not do justice for this car. It's an absolutely incredible work of art. Tech inspection for them ran REALLY slow and they didn't finish there till about 1:00 or later. Around 3:00 I saw them towing to staging. As I said earlier, I left around 5:30 so I don't know if they ran or not. I'll see them run tomorrow.
EDITED TO ADD: Many thanks to Joea and Sparky for the tires that let these guys get here!

As usual, I hope you enjoy the pics!

Probably wise - if he really lit the candle and the chute didn't go, it's likely he'd land in my backyard.

Here is my photobucket link of some of today's bike and cars.

Weather today started out partly cloudy and started getting more overcast as the morning wore on. Had a slight drizzle around 2:30 and I left a little after 3:00. Racing was to end at 4:00.

Again today, there were quite a number of bikes over 200 and several cars over 200 as well. Unfortunately, I left my radio at home so I only got speeds second hand. Didn't get any speeds on the Carbiliner, Zanefeld's TIII or the Steam Liner.....Sorry, My Bad!     Hopefully Woody has that info and will post. If not, run logs should be on the ECTA website in a few days.

As for the pics I got today, the first three are of the Carbiliner on it's maiden pass on any race course.....D*A*M*N that's a COOL car going down the track! As I said yesterday, A TRUE WORK OF ART!
The others are mostly the staging lanes and start line and a few at the mile.
The last five are videos I took at the start line and they are:
8797 B/FCT NASCAR car, 55 B/STR, 9821 C/GALT of Amy and Frank (Captthundarr) Hartman, 933 S/S Steam Liner and the 238 T/III liner of Dennis Zanefeld.
Gotta warn you.....I ain't no videographer and they are not really that good.  :-D     I was just trying to give the feeling of being here.

All-in-all, REALLY good weekend of racing, seeing old friends and meeting new ones!

As usual, I hope you enjoy the pics and vids!

Here is a quick update on the 496 Carbiliner, we'll get some video up as soon as we get back and get it processed.

First things first: Thank you to the ECTA and their efforts, it was a great facility and a well run event!

Second, it was great to meet many people from the board face to face. There were some really great cars and bikes, but people are what make the event great.

So, on to business. It took a while to get through tech, it is a long car with lots to look at. We made it up to 26th in line yesterday before the event closed down for the day.

This morning we go up bright and early and prepared for our first run. The first pass we made was a 140 licensing pass with Rob as the steering wheel actuator. The camera was installed rear facing so we could see the deployment of the chute.

The chute pops out clearly on the video without any issues. It blossomed nicely and slowed the car in time to make the turn off. In the video you can see the chute trailing behind the car on a long tether. I should also mention that there was a little headwind today.

So, as the car arched off the runway, you can see the chute being blown to the right. Due to a limited turning radius, we were trying to use all the available room to make the turnoff, Rob hit the apex of the turn perfectly. Did I mention the wind was blowing? Well, in the video you can see the chute drift gently right and pick a taxi way lite just as easy you would pick a daisy!

Other than the taxi light, no real harm was done.

The second pass today was a 160 pass. We had a much smoother launch operation. We swung the car off the trailer and hit the marks perfectly. Turned the push truck and trailer around for push off and loaded Rob into the car. Everything went well, through the launch.

At the end of the run, Rob pulled both chute levers. The primary chute failed to deploy due to an interference with the latching mechanisms. This would not have happened at high speed, but we will rework the latch and make sure there are no issues. In the grand scheme of things this is a small fix, but an important one.

With the long drive and a rain shower moving in we packed it in. We'll get the video processed as quick as we can and post it on our thread. If anyone has some action shots or video they took from the return road and would like to share, we'd love to see it. Every piece of data we can review is helpful.

Brandon,
Really great meeting/talking with you, Rob and your crew. Like everyone else, I absolutely LOVE the car. It's going to be a MAJOR player when the bugs are worked out.
I was at the mile this afternoon and was going to get a vid of the run. Don't know why but Brian was a "little" slack on the FM this afternoon and did not let us know when you ran so no vid from me.
I can say, it was an incredible sight to see it coming down the track. I am glad that I was here to witness it's maiden runs. BEST OF LUCK TO YOU GUYS IN THE FUTURE and I'll be one of your biggest supporters!

Not as many photos this time since I was crewing on two cars - 240Z and a new liner. But some videos to offset:

The 240Z made it's last pass just as it rained but they started again and ran until 4:00. 500+ runs for the weekend!

Here are the links to the videos that we took from on the Carbiliner this weekend.

The first video is pass #1 at 141 MPH out the rear to monitor the chute performance. We've watched this video 100 times, there is a wealth of information about what is happening with the car aside from the chute data we were looking for.

http://youtu.be/M7YdpE_DiKo (http://youtu.be/M7YdpE_DiKo)

Pass number two with the camera mounted on the left side wing looking forward. The location of the camera was almost directly above the axle. The microphone clearly picked up the interaction of the gears within the rear-end!

In the second video it looks like the top of the wheel covering is moving around as speed increases.
Is it just me or does anyone else see it? I don't think the camera is playing tricks because I don't see it anywhere else.

Gregg

We've been looking at that closely too Gregg. I think there is some legitimate movement there especially since it is a rigid rear and we really didn't put any loading on the wing. Both passes were made with the flaps in the down position.

When we stopped for fuel last night I had already watched the videos a couple hundred times. I noticed that in the video so I walked back to the fairing and gave it a pretty good shake. It does have some movement to it, but doesn't seem to be the same amount or type as what is in the video.

It looks like the top of the fairing moves disproportionately to the areas around it. It also follows the movement of the horizon closely too whereas the leading edge of the wing does not. Haven't been able to nail down a definitive amount of movement vs. artifacting from cameras anti-shake program yet, but you aren't seeing things either.

Several times while waiting in line I was able to have some fun and single out some kids looking on. I had at least one look away 5 times when he realized I was trying to get his attention. I finally got his dad's attention and asked his boy if he wanted to sit in the car. I am not sure who was more excited, the little kid or his dad!

Our team motto is: To serve. To learn. To inspire.

We want to do everything we can to inspire others to do "something" they dream of, especially the younger crowd. Without them getting out and chasing their dreams and creating something for themselves, it would be a bleak future.

When using the Go Pro camera in my Lakester I find theres some type of video movement/vibration I think this is related to the camera mount. Its possible thats what we are seeing in the videos of the Carbiliner.

Just reviewed the footage in large format and compared the movement of the wheel fairing to the main body panel retaining screws on the opposite side. If the camera was vibing the the screws would have shown movement equal to the wheel fairing. Sadly they do not and fairing movement is indicated. :-o
Title: Re: Wilmington September Picture Post

I think that movement is called frequency vibration. Whatever the cause I know Rob and Brandon will get it fixed. The Carbiliner and team are pure "class".
Title: Re:
Post by: bbarn on October 15, 2013, 08:56:13 PM
There is definite movement there, that is not unexpected. There are three main pieces to the tail of the car: two wheel fairings and one wing. The fairings are bolted to the wings and thier main function is to cover the wheels. Rotational movement or lateral (camber) needs to happen independent of the leading edge of the wing.

This will change as speed increases and the axle is loaded with the prescribed down force. When the loading is applied, the camber will become stablized/fixed, but the fairing will still have the ability to rotate about the axis of the wheel.

We are more interested in making sure the leading edge / angle of attack of the wing is controled and carefully maintained. The wheel fairings need to remain perpendicular to the wing. If they move from perpendicular, they need to do so evenly and controlled. This is an area that we can only monitor through higher speed passes since it is all driven by aerodynamic forces.

Low speed passes will only give us so much data. When we get some loading on the wings, then we'll know more about what is going on there. This is all part of the testing program on our way to our target velocity.
