Title: BUB 2013

Are there going to be any updates from the event here or elsewhere.

Great morning on the Salt today, but it got a bit windy in the PM.  Triumph Streamliner went out to the line but didn't run due to the wind.  We did well with an average of 142.871 and a new personal best of 145.156 in the kilometer. Good to see old friends and meet some new ones.

A Finnish rider went down on a highly modified Hayabusa but injuries may be minor.

That's a great run Tom, we have our first run tomorrow at 7am ish, as total newbies to the salt this is where we find out how well we have calculated jet sizes.

See you tomorrow

That rider went down right in front of me at the 1 mile mark. He was fishtailing badly at around 100 mph until the bike nosedived into the salt. The rider was thrown off.

BUT, then the bike bounced RIGHT BACK UP and went down the track for another 1/4 mile. I was able to get my camera going to video that part and the rider getting up and walking around picking up pieces. He was walking OK, but the ambulance took him away anyway.

I have never seen a bike get back up all by itself after laying down. That thing really wanted to go down the track.

Doesn't Bub/AMA require a tethered kill switch?  How'd the bike run if so equipped?

Texican just called me to say that the wind has been up and down like a pump handle and that there's been a whole lotta wind holds.  He said that the mountains were disappearing...I dunno if he meant Floating Island or the mountain range to the NW of the course area, but he said that he might be packing up and heading home...after an attempt to find the F86 crash site from 1954.

I'll let him post more about his experiences when he gets to a computer.

How is that Triumph running?  Are those training wheels in the photos?  What are those radiators?

I heard a rumor it did a slow speed run and then caught fire.  True?

Dick, I'm not there.  I'm at home.  Texican told me that it had run 93 mph.  The small blue wheels/tires are "training wheels."  I don't know anything else.  Texican sez that he's gonna try to get to their pits and get a picture or two.

Hey Ray, thanks for the comeback.  It looks from the photos that those are low speed training wheels and the radiators are to insure cooling at low RPM.  Maybe that was just a low speed test run up to 93.

It is probably too windy for a serious run.

I hope we got more info from Texican.  Will you be at Cook land speed challenge?

new motorcycle streamliner = take small steps as you go.  I spent many hours talking with Sam Wheeler last year and realized (and received a very good education that night) that motorcycle streamliners are their own world when it comes to track conditions, weather, handling, traction, steering, weight distribution and more.  Good to see these guys are being cautious and taking it easy with their new creation.

If anyone takes additional pictures, I'd love to see more.  Also was it built for BUB/FIM only or does it have a standard rollcage setup in the drivers area for SCTA running as well?

Do you think Wheeler knows what he is talking about?  MMM maybe.  He has only bee at it for 50 years I guess.

I hear he is coming back to Cook meet with 600HP rather than 275.  Do you think that will work in that little liner of his??

Were they wheels on a stick?

If you jetison them, what do you do when you want to stop?

The last thing you want to happen is to have your streamliner fall over. At any speed. Damage is a given. Dang, they are hard to pick up too.

So they put, literally, training wheels on it. They stay for the whole run, allow the driver and team to gain some confidence on launches, and will come off when the confidence level increases. Very good idea!  They have conventional skids also.

The Rad Flame serves steak and eggs for a late breakfast, but I doubt they're on the salt for this event.  And I don't think Jacey from the Enola Gay Cafe is set up for steak and eggs, so I'll agree that Jim must be at the Garter -- or one of the other casinos with the breakfast special.  Have fun out there, Jim.  I'll arrive in a week and a half.

Texican and I have been talking and decided that the wind forecast doesn't look very good.  I've attached a barometric pressure map for the US.  It appears there's a low pressure area right around Boise, Id and western Utah has some pretty high pressures (relatively, anyway).  Seems like all that high pressure air is in a hurry to get to the low pressure area and...well, it ain't lookin good.  I hope I'm wrong and Chris gets a chance to run the BUB7.

Tom Mellor went 200 and change today with the # 240 bike. First Triumph Triple 1000 over 200 normally aspirated on gas. BIG CONGRATS to Tom.

The Mellor racing 750 triple went 149.

Weather has been cool and the tracks fast. The expected thunder storms seem to have missed us.

Triumph have a beautiful $$$$$treamliner here with Jason Desalvo as the pilot, but has yet to run.

About streaming from the Bub event:  First of all -- yes, we did do that last year on landracing.com, with Max/Moxnix at the controls.  And yes, Pippa did offer me open access and lots of good wishes if we were to stream from Bub's again this year.  But it was not to be - in the Max is taking time off from LSR and I had to spend time at the engraving shop doing a few big orders.  Ergo -- no Bub's for me (again).

I'll be posting about streaming in a post to the WoS topic if you want further streaming information.  Tune in over there, hey?

SOOO! TRUE!

Especially laptops with tiny keyboards, that our FAT fingers, that are not too limber after over 60 years of working with hammers and rivet guns. [What did you say?]

I'll try to insert a few titles for thr pix; somewhat decompressing now.

My friend, who has one of the bikes in the photo mix Ray submitted, left yesterday.
After having his previous record that he wanted to bump up smeared by 15 or so MPH, then waiting 1 1/2 hours Tues. only to be told to go back and re-register, he considered the best part of the BUB meet is seeing it recede in the rear view mirror.

This, after sitting at prestage, on the front row for 5 1/2 hours Sunday; interminable waits Monday while every excuse one can dream of came down from on high.
"The computer died,"  "The radio died."  "We can't print out the time slip for your first run of the day."  "No, we don't send a for-runner to check the equipment," as any other racing venue might do.  Olympic skiing, anyone?
Dennis keeps bragging about 10 year's experience; why does it get worse instead of better?

This crazy critter is from Sodium Distortion crew in Bellingham, Wa.
Rider lies prone; 2 motors, an 80 and 83cc.
Frame is all bolted together 1/2 or 5/8" aluminum slabs.
Really different steering setup.
Looks like you would be grabbing a steer by its horns; but just slight wrist movement changes direction thru complex gear system. That way ones elbows don't get exposed to the vicious 60MPH or so slip stream.

Current NWS storm total rainfall radar display says they might have gotten between 0.3 and 0.5 inches of rain (always some uncertainty on those plots)

Update 1 hour total might go up to .75 inches depending on exactly where the pits are relative to the radar display.

Looks wet in the photos.  And the weather map shows lots of rain activity in the area for a few days.

Is there any place where the final results and records set might be posted?
We have several folks who would like to know.

The salt was good on the international course, the best in years, based on my experience.  Photos will be posted when I get back to Salem.

This Oregon boy is attuned to rain.  There was a look and feeling that came ahead of this storm that told me to get the heck out of there and I did.  I sorta feel bad that I did not tell others to get off the salt.  I thought they would think I was some sort of crazy idiot.  Word here is there are some folks stuck out there.

With all due respect, Bo -- how does one get stuck out on the salt when there's water there?  I've driven through water at least as deep as the wheel rims of the truck - maybe deeper - with no bad results other than the need for extra care washing.  I've got a diesel -- but spark ignition vehicles run in the deep salt water, too.  Perhaps those that are stuck are thinking that the wet salt makes for slippery or gooey driving -- akin to muddy roads after a rain.  Our experience has shown that the salt surface, when submerged, stays quite driveable.  We've driven through relatively deep water on the salt many times - without ever finding the much-like going that would cause us to be "stuck" out there.  Tell those folks to give it a try.

yes, what Slim said. After the 2011 World Finals massive rain out we worked all day with vehicles running in standing water on the salt picking up the event without any issues at all. The ground that was hard stays hard and nothing changes. Stay out of the areas that were soft when the salt was dry and you're good to go. Just drive at a snails pace to keep the salt splash from ruining the vehicle more than it has already been ruined  :-P

Quote from: Kim Krebs
We all know the saying ... if land speed racing was easy, everyone would do it. We lined up at 7am and ran after 10am only to have a carbon copy of yesterday's runs. Greg ran 196mph, I ran 191mph and Jim ran 194mph. We spent the next 4 hours tracking turbo, data logging and ballast problems only to be beaten by a storm just as we were ready to line up again to do more testing on the run. The sky literally rolled in black and brought driving rain that left the lake with standing water. It's most likely that the BUBs race meet is over. We'll see what tomorrow brings. Either way, we'll start preparing for World of Speed and Cooks Shootout that starts in 10 days time. We know what the problems are. Not all poor news though, other Aussie champions were Ronnie Stayt setting an FIM record at 186mph and Shane Gaghan setting an FIM record of 167mph.

and today

Quote from: Kim Krebs
After that incredible storm yesterday, the Bonneville Salt Flats has become a lake and the race meet is canceled. We don't know when we can retrieve our gear, but we are already working on bike tuning improvement so for World of Speed.

So I guess no one is getting out on the "lake" today

Does anyone know how David Edwards did on the Green ZX14?  He was up at the line for his first run when we pulled out Monday.  Simon made 3 passes Sunday and Monday morning to sort the bike out and their father, whom I believe is 76 years old, ran 84.1 mph on a Yamaha 350 for his personal best Monday morning.

Lance and I had a great time hanging out with this crowd and we look forward to pitting in their neighborhood if we get a bike or two out there next year.  Thanks again for everything to the Edwards Racing family.

Were there any photographers set up that took pictures of all the runs for 2013? D&W Images?
Also... did they hand out the 2013 metal BUB disk this year? Got one for 2010 and 2011 but not this year.

Thanks

I changed my Tiger Cub # to 1243 and ran in 250cc MPS-PG with a new motor. We upped the record to 88+ with a top of just over 89 mph. We had Tech problems (swing-arm length) but used the time on Sunday to run on the practice track and get the motor tuned. WE cleared tech on Monday AM and ran our best time on the 1st run. We spent the next 3 days trying but only matched our best on Wednesday AM. We pulled the head and tech'd out only to see the mountains disappear to the southwest. A hasty pit-pack and we were moving to the end of the road when the rain began. We got to the pavement just as the rain stopped but took advantage of the 'under-wash' on the drive into town.

Yes, there were some hold-ups but we came to have fun and sure did 8-) 8-) 8-)

We said hello to some old friends and welcomed a few new faces to the list. I really appreciated everyone that stopped to say hello and helped us out with jets and half-links. It was really interesting to SEE the blind riders and their coaches on their practice course 8-)

I did not see DW Images there. But Scooter Grub was there. He produces the yearbook and sells individual shots. I don't know any more about if he was shooting the runs. Horst the German guy was everywhere. No more info on that either. Of course the "out of nothing" movie crew were there with all their pro equipment including a drone and a real helicopter.

No aluminum coasters in the goody bag!  Just a program and some Pingel and S&S stickers.

Scooter was the official photographer for the event this year. I and others have had some issues getting responses from previous vendors, Scooter has always managed to get plenty of good pics.

Old Scrambler that had to be you we pitted next to. We had several off shore multimeters you borrowed, all of which read a different voltage!

Sorry so long in responding.  I met Simon Edwards in pre-stage and saw him later in tech.  From what I heard, he ran the record on down run, then blew up at the 2 on the return run but still set the record at 201 or so.  I will try to post some photos later, as I just got back from the AHRMA races at Miller.

Brother Lou did several days of run videos & Scooter Grub also did his high quality stills every day.  One of the largest attendances I've seen in years.  Both tracks were in Great shape.  We are more then happy with our record run of 174.9 with our little Sportster, and upping our personal best to 176.4  :-D

The "coasters" have donated to the BUB event in the past by Barnett Tool and Eng....................The BUB people need to keep in contact with their potential sponsors and answer their E-Mails....which they have not done to date..................

As a follow up to my last post, regarding very little to no answers from the "BUB People"......I sold one of my Salt bikes to a chap in New Zealand.........it is a race bike, so no title.....before export the Feds needed some proof that it was a bike build for Bonneville racing only......I asked the "BUB people" to send me a copy of the bike's entry in past events..........NO NOTHING.............My company has supported the event with dollars for many years in the sidecar classes.........one would certainly thinks that my question deserved a answer..........NO NOTHING.............................................................................

Did the BUB 2013 really happen? There may have been a few runs posted here and a bunch of pics, otherwise, zip.

There was a mention of Ack going 322. Nothing else. Did the Triumph streamliner run?

Even here there is a BUB 2012 heading. Not 2013 We did get this topic.

If you go to speedtrialsbybub.com you get "speedtrialsbybub.com/2011_event/index-2011.html"

If you go to results everything, including the page header, says 2012. Daily run logs? Not this year.

If you go to General Info the first heading "General Information" has nothing. Under "Guides, Maps, Etc." "Event Schedule" says "Coming Soon". "
Salt Conditions" says "Coming Soon"

There is a menu "Salt Conditions" and it contains an ad for a movie.

Pretty sad.

No one stepped up like we had in previous years - so that's why there wasn't a Bub's 2013 topic.  I now realise I should have put one there anyway -- and those folks out at the event would have had a place to post stuff.  Sorry.

As for the 322 run -- I heard that was the Bub #7 bike.  The Ack Attack wasn't at the Bub event.

"Pretty sad" ?  BOO hooo hooo
As a contestant at BUB this year, knowing the basic running is done with Volunteers, and the number of people actually in an office could be counted on one hand - I'd say they did the best that could be done with the available resources on hand .  - Job well done -  Nine runs in three days wasn't all that bad for us.  People from all over the world were here this year again and it seems like most of the complaints are from west coast guys - ?

We're already making plans for next years build, and will once again have a fun week at the AMA/BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials    :-D
See ya there

I was the one that started this thread hoping that people would post there pictures and thoughts about the event. some did and some did not. oh well you can't blame me for trying. Just to add i am just a fan and it seems that the first few years of the bub event everyone was happy with it and now it has fallen by the wayside. i will also say that the bub website does not seem to be updated as often as it should. just my 2 cents.

Observations from Wisconsin..............We had a great time and wonderful success after overcoming a few tech problems and tuning a new motor. Yes, the lines were long for the Mountain Course and the loss of the radio communication on Tuesday should not happen, but we got 7 runs in during 2.5 days including tearing down the motor for final tech on our record in 250cc MPS-PG. We met a lot of new friends and began to drive to the boat-landing when the rains came.

I was at BUB in 2009 and 2011. This year I observed more spectators. Everyone wants to see the streamliners run, but they take up some run time from others. The RWB riders tend to waste time by running the entire 2-5 miles. I suggest a flagged and groomed turn-out at the 3.75 area which nearly all riders at 125 mph or less could use.

The test area was easily found and I made good use of it..........5 plug-chop runs.......but it could be marked........and was later confusing because of the blind riders.  Most of the volunteers were GREAT but one or two were a little confused on Sunday and Monday AM.  The replacement radio announcing was poor in the beginning but steadily improved.

I don't know what the actual attendance was, but it looked good. Yes, the wind caused a few problems, and the rain cancelled the late runs, but we made the best of it and have no complaints. My strongest suggestion is to start a support group to encourage more volunteers.........even if its for part-time to give the others a break. I also suggest a pit-steward (well marked hat or cart) to keep guest parking in order. At one point we could not leave the pits at the usual place because of parked vehicles. I also observed non-participants driving a vehicle between the pits and tech area.

We will be back next year and two of my pit crew will also be participating with bikes of their own. If we all encourage others to participate, I'm sure Denis and his crew will continue to develop the staff and properly promote the event. The courses were well groomed and by Wednesday AM the salt was the best I've seen since 2009. I truly hope to see all of you in 2014 and BRING A FRIEND
