This will be my first trip to Bonneville and speedweek. I will be arriving Saturday morning before the cars start running, and will stay until Thursday. I know there is some “goings on” during week when the racing is done for the day. I would like to get as much of the experience as I can. Anyone have a detailed list with times and location of the extra events. Car shows, BBQ, discussion (BSing) groups.

Go to impound:)

Hey Pal, just get there and you will stumble onto whatever is happening.
This is not a PGA event.
There is no schedule and no where else to go.

Don't miss the Rat Rods -- you know -- hot rods like they used to be -- trailered in and dangerous.
-
Just follow the crowds. On the salt it's pretty obvious. Tour the pits. Hang out at the five mile to watch the fast stuff.
In town the action is in the parking lots. Everybody is wrenching and lots of other stuff to see. Sleep optional.
Non-racing stuff? Who cares?

Once racing is over for the day,
1. Make sure all equipment is ready for the next day of racing,
2. Study the data from that day of racing,
3. Plan tuneup changes to go faster tomorrow,
4. Repeat step 1 through 3 over and over until it is time to go back out on the salt.

Not only all of the above, including autographed picture of Andy Green, but quite a nice collection of various competitors from many years of racers.
Who knows what one might find?
And to answer a previous inquiry, it was called "The Hideaway"20+ years ago.
Te Mexican restaurant at the tracks where the little street branches off is pretty good.

For someone from San Antonio or New Mexico to eat Mexican food in Utah is just not right, except breakfast. :-D
-
Yes, The Hidaway. Greg Everitt and I got kicked out of there 1980 (our first trip to Bonneville). A 20 year old and a 32 year old being drunk and stupid :-o
-
Went in there one night with George and Bill Scott and another guy(?). We'd had a few. We were in George's VW Thing and thought it prudent to take our doors to dinner with us.
-
As I remember it there were only two things on the menu, steak or pizza, good times.
-
A long time ago, late 50's or early 60's, the Hideaway was named by Jack Foster from Portland, Oregon.
He jungled with Jim Davis and they were in there having some suds. They were
the only ones that weren't locals and many were from the railroad.
Jack was talking to the bartender and said, "a lot of these fellows stay a longtime."
The bar keep replied, " They come down here to hide out before going home at night."
Jack's reply was, "This must be the Hideaway." The name stuck.

Great steaks (ribeye) and a really fun waitress. Kats was here name.

It looks like the "Garlic and Onions" restaurant -- the one just across the tracks in Wendover, kinda behind the Nugget -- has changed names again. We didn't go to look, but did see a sign pointing in that direction saying "Los Compadres" restaurant. That place has changed names a bunch of times - who knows what it is now? What was it for a short time - Mildred's - when they had scads of different hamburgers on the menu.
As for other things to do -- see the newly restyled Red Garter. It's worth at least a drive by - if you remember what it used to be.
-
I enjoyed sitting at the Salt Flats Cafe, and having Lemomo-naid and b.s.'n with whomever ! Marcel and the family are fun, and the gas pumps are better than t.v. !
-
Let's revisit a visual of things not to do . . .
-
Ah, the Boyd incident (one of many).
Stan, I have your PM, you are not forgotten. Working on edumacating myself on web design. Will track you down in the pits.
-
If you're even remotely into history, find some time to check out the Air Force base. Not much happened there.....except training the crews that dropped the bombs on Japan.
-
You could always drive to Elco for a full body shampoo and some dancing.
-
It's Friday evening - about 7.40 PM - and there's a good sized bunch of cars in the Nugget parking lot already. Tomorrow is the "big" night for 'em, but if you've got time -- go take a gander now.
