Title: Brake cleaner + TIG/MIG = phosgene?
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on May 14, 2013, 10:06:53 AM
This article looks kinda familiar, but I'm putting it up to make sure we've got it available.  If you folks agree that it's of good worth -- I'll move it to the archives for long-term ease of access.

Thanks to Brew Bikes LLC for the article.  No, I haven't asked permission to archive the article -- but will now give it a go.

What we had long been warned about in this regard is that ANY cleaner containing chlorinated Hydrocarbons is capable of turning into phosgene gas with the application of heat!

We were also told that phosgene is the infamous "mustard gas" used during World War One.... as a weapon of mass destruction, it was effective.

I posted it here just recently too.
Old news is only "old" to somebody who already knows it & it was "news" to me a couple of weeks ago.

Slim, has a "shop safety" page been considered for the forum?

Well, gee -- no, I haven't -- but will now do so.  How's about it, boys and girls -- think we should have such?  And if we do - - do some of you have reference articles to contribute?  Make 'em good ones, please.  Send them to me and I'll arrange them in a single safety thread.

Thanks for the idear, Capt. T.

A shop safety forum would probably be a pretty good idea.....

Only one thing though.... Just ask (or tell) anyone/everyone who wants to post to check out what they are posting through snopes or some other verification program or website.

No problem Jon. As I am Safety, Health, and Environmental manager at a food manufactering facility and OSHA certified trainer I have seen photos on the forum in the past of folks in thier shops that made me shudder. Thought it would be a good idea since most of our tools aren't made of rubber.
