Title: 2013 DYNOTHON - a fund raiser for Landracing.com
Post by: Milwaukee Midget on May 02, 2013, 09:10:58 PM
Welcome to the DYNOTHON!

Date - May 9, 2013

I’m challenging ALL of you to –

A – Join in the fun.
B – Help us raise some funds for this website, which Slim and Nancy have been bearing the headaches and responsibilities for - along with the help of a few volunteers, for – heck, quite a while, now.

With Slim’s cautious blessing, I’m challenging you all to make a commitment to support this site with a donation.  The donation will be based on the BEST HORSEPOWER PULL WE CAN GET OUT OF MY 999 CC, 5 PORT, CARBURETTED, NORMALLY ASPIRATED, 3-MAIN BMC FORMULA 2 SPEC A-SERIES ENGINE.

Based on what is typical of the BMC engine when set up for racing, our best, optimistic guess should see this thing at between 93 and 105 horsepower.

Some examples for comparison

1. A 1310cc version of this engine, built by Fordboy, cranked out about 135 horsepower.  That was on SU carbs, and built to SCCA specs.

2.  On the other end of the spectrum, Dick Leuning of MG Limited and the Killer Beez racing team told me that 95 hp was about all one could expect out a 948 Sprite block, fully prepped.

What distinguishes my engine from either of these examples is what follows –

A.  I have the bigger bore of the 1310 engine, which allows me the use of bigger valves than the 948 Sprite engine.
B.  I have a shorter stroke and, of course, less displacement than the 1275 based 1310, but the 1310 is considered undervalved for its displacement, so the head, though intended for a larger engine, actually breathes better with respect to the displacement than the larger engine.
C. I’m running a Weber DCOE carb, rather than the SU carbs, with a better breathing manifold than one can typically find for SUs.
D.  I’m running a direct fire Electromotive ignition which will allow me to dial in the advance curve to within an inch of its life, plus provide the safety of a knock sensor.
E.  The cam was custom ground by Dema Elgin to specs set forth by Fordboy for this specific application.
F.  We’ll be experimenting with three different sets of headers, and possibly two manifolds, looking for the best power under the curve we can get.  That said, the final iteration of the tune may not necessarily be the one with the largest horsepower number – we may decide to give up a little on top for a tad more grunt.  Nevertheless, the largest horsepower number we generate will be the multiplier for the donation to landracing.com that I’m asking you to commit to.

Fordboy will be posting the numbers.

I’ve kicked it off with a commitment of $1.00 per horsepower.

Rex, Jon and Graham have already met that challenge – thank you gentlemen.  My goal for this is to see Slim and Nancy rake in at least $2,000.00 from this little side show.  If I can pull 100 hp, we’re already 1/5th of the way there.

No contribution will be considered too small, and if you’d rather not make your generosity public, simply PM Slim the amount you want donate per horsepower, and we’ll maintain your anonymity.

Let’s keep this site financially healthy, and have some fun doing it.

Thank you in advance for your generous participation!

Chris Conrad

What did the Huffakers get back in the 60s?????

What did the Huffakers get back in the 60s?????

A good story from Fordboy about a Huffaker engined Midget . . .

An engine Fordboy prepped that he dynoed at 135 - a 1310 - consistently pulled away from a Huffaker prepped 1310 with an alleged hp of 145.  The claim was, of course, made by the team campaigning the car. . . sometimes not the most reliable source, and in SCCA, very likely liars playing head games with fellow competitors . . .

Was it actually putting out 145?  If so, there was something desperately wrong with either where it was making the power, the tune, or how it was putting it to the track.

I will not slam Huffaker - I've seen Spridgets prepped by these guys.  I actually sat in one once - where they found the leg room, I'll never know -  and I think their work is world class.  If money were no object, I'd have probably just written them a check and went racing.  And if anybody can get 145 out of a 1310, it's likely them.

As to their expertise in building a short-stroke A-Series engine, I don't know for sure.  I had actually contacted them when I started this project, but I simply couldn't afford to build the engine I wanted by using them.  And looking back, I'm glad I did it this way - I'm smarter for it.

As to short stroke Formula 2 spec motors such as mine, it's really a tough call, but I genuinely think the 95-100 hp range is realistic.

I don't think I'm sandbagging - if it goes much stronger than 100, I'll be delighted and surprised, and we will post the results.

Pony up, boys - this site doesn't run itself!

We’re making some progress – the following people have publically proclaimed their support of landracing.com with pledges of support for the Dynothon, this Thursday, May 9th –

Rex Shimmer (US)     $1/hp
Jon (Aus)       $1/hp
Graham in Aus (Aus)   $1/hp
Aussievetteracer (Aus)   $1/hp
Gkabbt    (US)      $1/hp
DaveL (Aus)      $1/hp
Geo (US)                    $1/hp
Wheelrdealer (US)                 $1/hp
Jh333 (US)      $2/hp
Myself  (US)      $1/hp

So far, we’re at $11.00 per horsepower (which I can assure you, is a fraction of what these little ponies are costing me to produce) and if I can pull 100 hp out of this lump, that would put us at 55% of the goal of $2,000.00 for Landracing.com.

Currently, 40% of the contributors are Australian.  That’s impressive for a country that is 7% of the population of the United States.  Stepping to the plate, and punching above their weight.  Thanks, guys!

I am beginning to wonder if there are any racers in Canada . . .

If you’re reading this, you’re using the service – pony up!

Chris, remember that English horses, Shires, Clysdales, etc have more pulling power per animal.  This needs to be considered when you enter the dyno calibration coefficient.

The rest of you, make sure to donate.

OK.

I am flat broke, in fact I am borderline solvent with an uncertain outlook, but that's another story.....

This site has provided immense entertainment and useful information for us over the years and that is without mentioning the friendships my friends here and I have made. It's a drop in centre for the hare-brained thrill seekers and an in-joke fest for the OCD hard heads that most here are.

$1 per horse, plus fifty if you break it, even if I have to steal it.

There , that should just about tip the scales to 50%.

Title: Re: 2013 DYNOTHON - a fund raiser for Landracing.com
Post by: Milwaukee Midget on May 08, 2013, 08:23:30 AM
It’s looking promising, guys!  So far, we’re up to 16 pledges to the site, and I’d like to acknowledge -
Sparky – (US) (I think he’s got a pool going)
Lsrjunkie – (US)
Dr. Goggles – (AUS)
38 Flattie –(US)
Dean Los Angeles – (hmmm . . . I suppose that’s about as US as Milwaukee, so we’ll put you down on the US team)

So we’re at 16 as of this morning – dyno day is tomorrow.  If everything goes perfect, four more might get us to the $2,000.00 goal I’ve set for this, but I want to pad it a bit.

And you don’t have to match the high rollers – consider 4 bits a pony – Jon will certainly be pleased with any and all contributions to the site.

So we have no Canadian contributors, or Kiwis?  No French contributors?  NO BRIT CONTRIBUTORS?!?!?!

Let’s see if we can get 6 or 7 more pledges to Landracing.com by 8:00 AM Central Daylight Time on May  9, 2013.

Thanks to ALL!

Chris

Remember, we made the original "Grenade" sticker that's on Chris's engine.  And we could make shirts displaying that, too.  Maybe they'd be cool little mementos of the event (when the engine is on the dyno, not when the engine blows to kingdom come).

Chris, what do you think?  Should we award "Grenade" shirts to those kind folks that donate money to the site in re: the engine dyno session?  We'd need sizes and addresses of each of the "winners", of course.  Let me know and we'll get on it.

I'm a car guy with twin toddlers, but for as much time I spend
on LR, I'm in for 4 bits ($.050) per HP up to 95, $1/hp over 95.

And I would love a "grenade shirt" and/or a black LR sticker...
Title: Re: 2013 DYNOTHON - a fund raiser for Landracing.com
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on May 08, 2013, 03:54:12 PM
Well, maybe not.  The process e use to make shirts is called dye sublimation -- and the color of the shirt is the background of what we print.  Ergo - white is best, light grey second, and so on to darker and darker colors.  e can't print anything (that's visible, at least) on black shirts.

The landracing.com stickers are either white with black & red text (circular, about 3" dia. or so), or blue with white text (bumper sticker size).

Since we'll do this as part of Chris's kind offer to make it a fundraiser for the site - I'd like to keep costs down.  And that means us doing the shirts, not sending them out to have someone silk screen them or something.  I hope it all works out.  I will check a local silk screen shop, though -- 'cause we're starting to work with him and might get a great price if I have Nancy beg a little bit.

Tack on another $100.00, Jon – My mom and dad, Pat and Frank Conrad, just mailed me a check.  They made it out to me, and after the festivities and or condolences, I’ll get it cashed and PayPal it to you early next week, along with a buck a pony from me.

So now there’s no backing out – Parental pressure and all . . .  :-D

8:00 AM CDT, May 9th, and we’ll be cutting this off – pony up now, boys and girls!

Update from the DYNOTHON?
Title: Re: 2013 DYNOTHON - a fund raiser for Landracing.com
Post by: Milwaukee Midget on May 10, 2013, 09:48:10 AM
Whew . . .

Okay, let’s conclude the Dynothon.

We came up short of our goal, which would have been a minimum of 93 hp, at which point we landracing.com would have been able to collect on all pledges made by the friendly folks here.  Thanks to all for your participation.  We enjoyed the push, and the push will continue, because there is more to be had from this combination.

At the end of the day, and running into a noise ordinance curfew imposed on T&T in the municipality of Gurnee, Illinois, our best pull clocked in at 88.2.  Given more time – which I will coordinate with Tom, Mark, Don and T&T, I am certain we will be able to best that.

But for the purposes of the Dynothon – your multiplier is 88.2.

We have reams of data to comb through – 15 complete and incomplete pulls, tuning notes and recollections that Mark and I need to coordinate, but we all agree that we left horsepower on the table – and we’re going back to get it.  In fact, I didn’t even bring the engine home – it’s on a dyno cart, waiting for our return

I’ll have a complete breakdown on the day over on the Milwaukee Midget build diary at some time that I can bend my mind around it.  But once we got a working carb on this thing, we were making jet changes and ignition changes at a break-neck pace.  It was 7 hours of maddening tedium followed by a geyser of useful data.

The fun has just begun.

Again, THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED!
Slim – expect some checks in the mail!

Everybody else - PONY UP!

Sincerely,

Chris Conrad

Wow.  Thanks, gentlemen.  So far five of you have sent Paypal donations.  Thank you very much.  And some of them were well more than the basic so many bucks/hp, so I thank you for that.

In answer to the question about remitting:  Hey, I'm happy with the $$ no matter how you get it here.  USPS is fine:  landracing.com, 509 Dukes Road, Skandia Michigan 49885.  By the way, if you don't know where we are -- look up Skandia (may have to substitute Marquette because Skandia is so tiny and not on some maps) so you know from now on.  And once you know -- you'd be welcome to hand-deliver the cash or check.  Let us know you're headed this way and we'll be sure to have some pasties in the oven for supper that night.  And maybe, while you're here, Nancy will show you her two latest tattoos.  One is on her right wrist, the other one needs - ahm, how do I say it -- mmm, can be seen when she's wearing a skimpy swimming suit top.  Real skimpy.

Paypal is easy, and if you see the little box you're welcome to tick it which tells them it's a gift and they shouldn't take their pound of flesh as a "processing fee".  But whether or not -- I do appreciate all of the support that you've shown the site - and Chris.  And for that matter, thanks, Chris, for not only building a fun engine but also coming up with the "Dynothon" idea.  I'll look forward to your further adventures.  And I'll keep the offer open to make Grenade t-shirts.  Should I wait 'til I can honestly put a "100hp" on there -- or start 'em right away?  If that's the case I'll be needing sizes (and shipping addresses) from you five -- and all the others that want one.  I'll put it this way -- any donation (to the site) that's over $35 will get a shirt if wanted.  You five all qualify.

I agree.  That indeed was the plan, but the videographer was AWOL.  We could have set my camera to do short vids, but once we were running and under the gun to finish before the 5:00 curfew, movie making had moved down on the priority list.

As always, I want this to be beyond reproach, and once I have figured out how to get these darned files to print and/or make pdfs, you will be inundated with data - I know I have been!  :-D

If anybody wants the raw logs, let me know - I've got them all, and I'll be happy to share them with you.  Send me a PM, and I'll forward them to you.  The software is available on Superflow's website.

On behalf of Jon and Nancy, thank you all for your support!

Bill, that's entirely your call.  Technically, the Dynothon ended on the 9th.  Personally, I went ahead and donated my aspirations - which was 100, along with the 100 my mom and dad sent, but all that you're honor bound to is 88.2.

See you in August?

Okay – a bit of an update.

First off, the Dynothon!

Thanks for all who have contributed to landracing.com.  I’ll ask Slim to post up all who have paid, and then we can all bullyrag the rest into submission.

For those who are holding back in anticipation of bigger numbers and bigger dents in your wallets, episode 2, RETURN TO DY-NO-DOME, will be conducted on the 28th of May.  So those of you who were sandbagging – you might have been wise to take the 88.2 and run with it.

Second, I just received a fist full of Weber jets, and I expect that within these fine little bits of brass lies the key.

25 pulls to 8000-8200 rpm, countless jet, choke and emulsion tube changes, 3 different headers, 2 different intake manifolds, and bumping up the timing netted a solid 95.1 hp at 8000 RPM.

(http://i361.photobucket.com/albums/oo58/milwaukeemidget/DSCN5154_zps7708fb90.jpg) (http://s361.photobucket.com/user/milwaukeemidget/media/DSCN5154_zps7708fb90.jpg.html)

To those who were putting off a contribution until we were done, I can say now, we’re done.

The multiplier is 95.1.

Thanks for all the support of the site, the encouragement and the help.

Hey, boys and girls, ladies and gentlemen and all the ships at sea:  It's time to make the t-shirts for Salt Talks and for Chris' engine dynothon.  The deal is that the Salt Talks shirts will be the same as the Dynothon shirts - except the Dynothon shirts will have extra detail on them to commemorate the little engine that not only could, but did.  The shirts will be for all of you that donated money as part of MM's challenge ($/hp).  If you sent in at least $40 you get a shirt, including shipping.  You're welcome to pick up your shirt at SpeedWeed, World of Speed, the Shootout, or World Finals, too, of course.

But I need to know your sizes.  If you'd be so kind as to let me know -- whether here, on this topic, or via an email or PM -- I'll make sure we get the right sizes made.  Also, of course, we need an address if you won't be picking up your shirt on the salt.

Back to the shirts:  They'll have Rouse and Fred Vance and Stainless (vehicles) on them this year, they'll have the text-stuff about this being the 74th Salt Talks (well, more like 14 or something) and the other usual information.  There'll be a landracing.com logo on the back, and for the first time we've got a sponsor for one of the sleeves.  Some of the MM information might be on the other sleeve, too.

We commonly make about 15 medium, 30 large and 30 X-large, 15 2XL and 10 3XL.  We'll need sizes for the MM shirts, and if you've got a specific size request (that isn't even shown in the list I just printed) - let me know.

Later -- thunder and lightning on the horizon.

Hi Jon,
Being the wrong side of the pond makes it a bit expensive for you to ship 1 Tee to me.

If you're going to the Bub meet there is a friend of mine I could ask to bring it back for me?

Cheers
Neil

Nope on going to the Bub meet.  But don't despair - I betcha we can figure out a way to get the shirt to you then without me being present.  I'll just have to be a bit prescient.

I'll find someone that is going to Bub's and have him deliver it to you - okay?  For that matter, if one of your landsmen is attending Bub meet and SpeedWeek as well -- perhaps he could get the shirt and deliver it.

Hi Jon,

If you can get it to the Bub meet that will work great  :-D
2 friends of mine are doing volenteer duties for Delvene, and should be there for the whole time.
If you could mark it for the attention of John and Dawn Kennedy (John is Comet on here) that will work for me

Cheers
Neil

Neil, I'll likely (try to) use the standard method for holding a package for a racer at Bville -- and that's leave it with Mike Crawford at Car Quest.  I'll put your name/Dawn and John's name on it -- and they'll need only to go there, pay him the $100 fee he charges for anyone not racing or driving a Corvette -- and he'll hand it over.

Nah, he won't really charge anything for the favor.  He does it all the time.  It won't hurt to let him brag about his Corvettes, though.

Okey-dokey, ladies and germs (quoting Alan Alda):  The 2013 Salt Talks shirt art is done - and why, you ask, do you Dynothon fans give a dang?  Because -- as supporters of the Dynbothon and of this website, everyone that gave at least $40 to the Dynothon effort will be awarded a souvenir Salt Talks/Dynothon Special Version t-shirt.  These will be collector editions, not available to the rest of the world -- just to the big bunch of you that stumped up for Chris's effort to help the website raise some $$.  Yea, someplace I've got the names of those that sent in the $$ -- but I don't have addresses for shipping and, more important, I don't have shirt sizes for you folks.

Therefore I beg of you to let me know what size shirt you want and to where you want it shipped.  I would hope that I don't have to go through the task of digging names so I can write to each of you - so save me the effort and let me know.  Yes, I will be happy to deliver 'em to Bville.  I'll be there for all of the events except Bub's, and you're welcome to tell me that you'll fetch 'em from our (SSS) pit.

Dynothon shirts soon to be available.  If you "earned" one -- let me know what size and where to send it.  Thanks.

Jon,

2XL for me and I'll pick it up during the WoS meet. On second thought, I could wait and pick it up at Salt Talks II and get one of those shirts as well!  :-D

Gregg - and everyone:  First of all, thanks for the orders for shirts.  Gregg:  ST II shirts will be more of the same shirt this year -- no difference 'tween SpeedWeek and WoS shirts.  Get 'em while you can.  I will hold out shirts for those that ask us to do so -- but please, pick 'em up and don't forget to do that.  We've frequently held shirts for someone at his request - and a week or so later we head home with said "reserved" shirts in the truck with us.  I suppose I could ask for prepayment -- that way my "give a sh*t meter" reads zero if you don't get it while out there.  But I won't be that mean -- if for no other reason than I've already had my grouchiness pointed out today on another thread.  It's light and fluffy SSS for the rest of today.

If you'd like a Salt Talks t-shirt - either let me know or find us someplace on the salt or at ST Sunday evening.  They'll be $20 this year, just like last and the year before that.  We're making a total of 160 of 'em - but some of those are already pre-sold and some will have the MM/Dynothon special imprint.  The MM shirts are for the folks that donated at least $40 towards the Dynothon when Chris and Mark/Fordboy were squeezing that little grenade for all it was worth.  If there are shirts left we'll sell them for the same $40.  Almost the same shirt but with a small extra imprint, you know.  We're making a limited number of the shirts - so if you want one - let me know within the next few days.  We won't have very many spares with us at Bville.
