Title: Helping the World.
Post by: JustaRacer on January 23, 2013, 05:59:30 PM
If you have a computer, and you want to help cure diseases, you can!

Stanford University is trying to analyze how proteins work, which is called protein folding.

It take huge amounts of computer power.

So what they did, was to tie in tens of thousands of home computers together, all over the world, to form the largest supercomputer in existence.

It works in the background while your computer is on, so it doesn't affect most folk.  When your computer is between tasks, it uses the surplus power to solve a portion of a protein fold.

Their website is folding.stanford.org.

The diesel guys have a team called DuramaxDiesels, team number 195247 which has solve tens of thousands of folds.

But if the LSR guys who have computers want to form a team, I will help that team as well.

Go to the site and read up on it.  If people are interested, let's form a LSR team.  You can "race" against other members, and all teams race against each other.  It costs you nothing if you have a computer, except a couple extra dollars of electricity each month.

If there is no interest, that's OK too.  But it seems a little competition is in our blood.  They have constant scoring of the teams, and many folk "hotrod" their computers in friendly competition.

Anyone want to Race?

Pat, I couldn't resist posting this copy-and-paste of the body of an email that arrived last night.  Might it be from a relative of yours?  It fits into the thread since it's talking about medications and research, right?

Here it is:

"My dear
