when I was there they called it the U.P. don't know if that makes 'em uppers or yoopers or UPers... I just know it gets damn cold with deep snow and better you than me.

It's a hijack -- but still has to do with me and being in the winter. I need some help here.
I had a spell with our Bobcat (skidsteer loader) broken down in the woods, and needed to freshen the battery to get it to fire the glow plugs so it'd start. The Honda EU1000i generator works fine -- except it shuts off and the "low oil" light glows. That's all fine and dandy. BUT- - -
I can't find the manual, and remember that it wasn't much help when I first got the generator. Very un-Honda-like, I know -- because they didn't give much information about oil fill then. And still -- I don't know how to read the little dipstick to figure out where the level should be. There's a cross-hatch pattern on the dipstick that looks like MAYBE it's got a different pattern around the center, as in "This is the okay-to-run area". But -- it's damned difficult to tell for sure, and there aren't any stickers with instructions anywhere on the generator - inside the case or outside.
Have you got one of these gems? Can you give me some guidance - before I just dump in a few more ounces and see if it runs or hydro-locks from too much oil?
I sure don't understand the Honda folks here. When we got a new Briggs & Stratton mower engine last summer not only did they tell me exactly how much oil to use -- they included a little bottle of oil with the engine. The instructions were simple and pretty foolproof: Put ALL of this oil in the crankcase. It's the exact amount you need." Why doesn't Honda do it so nicely?
Where's the "run" level on the dipstick?

Thanks, PJ. In the meantime I dug around out in the garage and found the Owner's Manual. It's think -- and therefore I couldn't punch holes in it to insert in the three-ring binder I've got with all the rest of the manuals from this and that power equipment. I'll read it before i go back out there for a S/N.
By the way - I did look online for a manual, but they didn't want to download into this here 'puter - for some odd reason. I figured that I'd get an answer from one of youse guys faster than I could understand the manual/download thingie, anyway. As soon as I find out something about the dipstick I'll post it.

Here's the page about checking oil level -- and Honda continues to disappoint me. They mention the dipstick -- but don't say anything about how to read it. Yes, having the oil level right at the mount of the filler is easy -- but why bother with the dipstick being graduated/crosshatched - if it doesn't mean anything? :? :?

The book continues to cornfound -- because I had to look for quite a while to learn the capacity of the crankcase. It's, for the sake of this discussion, .25L -- a little more than a half-pint. But where the book goes through initial set-up instructions it DOES NOT mention how much oil to add, rather telling (me) to add enough to bring it to the lip of the filler neck. That's fine -- but wouldn't it be nice to have an idea of how much it'll take to get it there?
Yeah, I know -- bitch, bitch, bitch. Be happy that the generator is otherwise such a nice little unit.

with that type of oil plug on the bottom of the case~~ I have always filled till it comes out,
when the engine is level.
with the dipstick, it should be good to go anywhere in a hash mark area. I like to put it in the center. but, some dip sticks are screwed all the way in and some are just set at the top of the threads to check the oil level.
a lot of times the amount of oil is approximate. the manual says 1 capacity for any number of engines.

Bill, the hash marks are uniform from top to bottom of the stick. I don't know why they've got them there at all. But anyway, today I've filled the crankcase so it'll come out if the generator is leaning toward the plug. . . per the instruction booklet.

Do you have your quota of snow in da UP this winter? Why, cuz we had some whitestuff in Scottsdale and Tucson AZ. Poor Tiger Woods froze his you know what off. Was white for awhile anyway, made for some cool pics.....

Well, now that you ask, no - we're way short of the amount of snow that we should have by this time of the season. We've had - including the 2 feet or so that feel earlier this week -- about 9 feet. By now we should have closer to 11 or even 12 feet for the winter. Snow is a big part of the annual precipitation total. I'd tell you about the hassles of getting the Bobcat stuck/broke down out in the woods, and then, once I got it running, having the battery absolutely die when I finally returned to the house -- but you'd laugh so hard you probably wouldn't get to sleep tonight. As for snow this past week - - here are two photos Nancy took. The first is me standing just behind the drift by our back door. We've got a plastic tarp "tunnel" to keep the last ten feet of the sidewalk snow-free, but this'll show you the drift just outside that tunnel. Yes, it's about d*ck deep.
The second shot is one of our apple trees, shot from inside the house. The first four feet of the trunk are outs sight - buried in snow.
There you have it - and I bet you'd love to come up here for a visit now, wouldn't you?

as I recall the snow is supposed to be d*ck (the root, not the tip) deep in the U.P. this time of year... We just had 15 inches N of Wichita... spent the day on the tractor clearing driveways in the neighborhood.

Sorry I'm late to the meeting, Slim. You need to run thinner oil in the 1000i. It gets the oil moved around and not returned well enough, and it wont make enough heat to thin it out. This had me stumped until I tried 5w-20 and figured it out. I go just a little over fill in freezing weather, also.
Sometimes it will run for 15-20 minutes before it gets the oil moved enough to force a low oil shutdown.

Hey Slim, You look good , ____ deep in snow. Thanks for Trenary stuff looks like fun. That clear cold air is great for your system. Just think what sucking in that cold stuff in the bike engine what kind of HP you could produce. Don't think about freezing your face at 200 MPH. Stay well.
