I'll put this topic up for your opinions about whether the attempt at making a more modern steam locomotive break the existing (about 125 mph) record is something we ought to even have here on the land speed racing website. Have at it, ladies and gentlemen.
-
In the transportation gallery of the Science and Industry Museum in Chicago, there are two icons of land speed.
The #999 New York Central Railroad's steam locomotive, which ran 112.5 mph in 1893.
And when you turn around, you see the Spirit of America, Craig Breedlove's car.
When I first saw the displays as a kid, I was awestruck by both.
Trains are the original mechanized land speed vehicles. I'd run with it.

After 35 years on the RR working on diesel power I could be considered a bit biased. It's speed on land so I say go for it.
NYC #999 in 1893.....makes me wonder if that had an influence on Henry's ice record car# ?
The Stanley brothers and Fred Marriot were way ahead of their time when they ran at Daytona.
How long for the new tech to surpass the old? Should be interesting.

Gee PJ, that hurts....... were still running at El Mirage this weekend.......
-
I have a distorted viewpoint Mike, from under a rather large dump of snow. We were under heavy snowfall warnings for the last couple of days. We finally saw the sun this morning.  :-D
Good luck to all those running at Elmo. Sounds like the speeds are high!

I'll bet the damn thing drives like it's on rails
it doesent need a section but anything concerning speed should get a thread
-
I want to know how we can get a ride on the fast train

Dunno. Breaking a record that was set with 1930's tech by using 2012 tech seems like a slam dunk. Should double the record?
Like the guy who jumped out of a balloon at 130k feet, he broke a record set by guys who were just testing whether U2 and SR71 pilots could survive a bailout, hence didn't try for more than 100k.
And Kittenger? didn't know it was survivable at the time, and did it anyhow. The 2012 record breaker knew it was survivable using old technology beforehand.
Pretty neat stuff, but seems somehow unfair.
-
Well, 2012 techonology will be used -- in a 1930-era body. If you look more closely at the information in the link you'll see the "enthusiasts" have procured an old steam locomotive as their test bed for the new boiler and fuel. So - they'll still have to push some monster hardware down the track. No streamline-y body, no slick aero tricks at all. At least that's what I got out of the article.
-
"Drives like it's on rails" ? ? ?
Oh -- that's how they keep track of it!
-
Leave it to Stan to tie that together....................................
-
It just spiked my interest.
-
Seems the thread is getting derailed by those who think this is puny. I won't be railroaded into anything puny.
-
Maybe they are just trying to blow off a little steam!

Obama says no coal burners

I knew this would get side-tracked.............................

Obama says no coal burners
That`s a "tender" subject...........
-
Now you're just beating a dead iron horse.
-
It's OK if someone is to derail the thread.
Stan will get it back on track.
-
There are rail road tracks that run right down HWY 80 maybe we could do it at salt talks should be interesting to see a train at speed, remember Ab Jenkins raced one from SLC and won.
-
You guys get steamed up over every little thing, it's too easy to de-rail your interests by side-tracking your locomotion!!
You do realize you're running out of time to get the wishlist to Santa so that you're ready for racing next year, right?
Just wanted to make sure you were all on the right track!!

No train racing, or Lynda will put coal in our stockings!
-
Just make certain that your pop off valve ain't stuck.
FREUD
-
And with that single action, Freud compounds the issue.
-
Freud, don't keep stoking the boiler, it's going to blow more steam than the engine can handle and everything will derail! :-o
Lynda
-
Freud will make it run backwards as the streamlining can be changed.

I hope the engineers working on this project have the right training. They are going to under a lot of pressure.

If they aren't trained right, they should switch before crossing that line.

Let's get this topic back on track with a tie in to lsr. :-D :-D :-D

Yes -- and hopefully the end of the line for all this foolishness.

The topic has gotten coaled. :|

you guys are cracking me up. :-D

Looks like most of the steam locomotive puns have been....Articulated
-
We're not getting any traction on this subject.

If you run anthracite coal does it put you in fuel class?

Early nitro experiment?

Looks like the engineer had a real blast piloting the one in the picture!
-
My great uncle was an engineer in that area around that time . Who ever the engineer was it must have really gotten their attention .
-
Neil..I doubt that was from nitro.............Too many useable parts leftover
-
A model joke........ HO HO HO
You've got a point you guys, i'm just waiting for a signal so I can express myself .
-
Model joke?.....That`s a switch
-
Wait a minute. That's enough frivolity. I put the subject up here so we could see that there are other folks, in other venues and, most important, other technical areas, that are interested in ultimate top speed. And what you folks do? You derailed the topic.

Gosh Jon...What SPURRED that outburst ???
-
I shall now give wide berth to our esteemed conductor....Lest he become ...can-tank-erous.

Keep on truckin'

And THAT could be terminal..................

It looks to me like he's trying to railroad us into being more serious, but I think one serious post would probably spur us onto the right track! :-D :-D :-D
(It's off season!)

All ABOOOOOORRRRRRDDDDDD............... (or is that "we are all bored")?
-
Bob would a turn table work for you. :-D
-
All of these puns made me lose my train of thought.............................
-
This thread certainly has gotten derailed. Can it possibly get back on track??
-
The thought of all these puns makes me steamed!
-
I agree that we should switch the topic - and side track the silliness. It's making me tender and wishing I'd see the caboose.
-
Now the topic is on track again ........... which governing body and under what conditions will the record be attempted? Railways are renowned for having down gradients to allow for a bit more speed. The Mallard record was set by a locomotive and carriages so will the US people have a similar length/weight/w.h.y.
Already it is suggested on the website that they will not be using steam coal, but some modern briquette.
Whether they can achieve more than 125 mph or 126 mph remains to be seen, but they will probably not run on a track that was at the time of the record attempt a normal railway line, but 28 year old steel rails.
It is said the A4 locomotive cost just £8,500.00 when it was built in '38.

OK Slim...I can read a signal..Stop now before crossing...the...line.

Thought for sure this one would bring a new scale to this thread........................
