Title: Please help me understand cage gusseting location requirements...
Post by: SteveM on November 07, 2012, 07:23:05 PM
I'm trying to get a good understanding of where exactly on the roll cage that gussets are required.  In all likelihood, I will have more gussets than needed to meet the minimum standard, but I want to make sure that I don't miss a location where they are actually required.

OK , per 3.B.1 - "Gussets are required at tube junctions of hoops and shoulder rail"., along with "Gussets are required at all shoulder bar attachment points"

For a roadster, the figures on pages 27 and 28 of the 2012 rulebook are illustrative of required gusset location.   The figure 1 on page 26  for a stock bodied car does not seem to show the required gusset locations.

For a doorslammer, I can picture where the hoop and shoulder rail meet (at 2 locations, one on each end of the shoulder bar, where it ties into the main hoop).  Per the rulebook, it seems that only 2 gussets would be required to meet the minimum standards.

In most photos of rule-meeting roll cages, there are many more gussets.   I intend to gusset at as many locations as possible, but don't want to miss a required location.

Can anyone shed some light on what the inspectors expect to see?

Thanks in advance,

Steve.

Steve,

I had the same question about gussets. Per my request, my chassis guy made several calls to Kiwi Steve Davies.
Steve told my chassis guy that gussets needed to be on the upper part on the cage intersections so he put 3 on each side:

1 at the front

2 at the back

I took my build diary pictures to SpeedWeek in 2009 and had several discussions with Dan Warner about legality (in certain areas) of my truck.
Per those discussions, he said everything "looked" fine to him.

Hope this helps,
Gregg

Should have included these pics in my post yesterday.

Gussets on the passenger side:

gkabbt , a question...what am I looking at where the tubing goes through the lexan back window?
It looks like the tubing ends on one side and continues on the other with a pair of bolted together round plates in the center..How did you do the brace?

Thanks..Bill

Bill,

I think this is a case of "looks are deceiving".....It is one continuous tube.

This is what my chassis guy did:
1. Created and notched the down tubes.
2. Loosely installed the lexan rear window.
3. Cut the ovals in the rear window for the tubes to slide through.
4. Unstalled the rear window and then slid the down tubes through.
5. Welded in the down tubes (The rear window was down in the bed covered).
6. Did the final install of the rear window and installed the rubber and metal seals that surround the down tubes.

Seems like a lot of work but I really like the way it turned out.

Here is my build diary with all pictures of what my chassis guy did:
