Title: V or higher rated 15" tires or Front runners for 150 mph club VW Ghia
Post by: roadcow on July 23, 2012, 05:07:06 PM
Can't seem to find any used tires and this will be a 1 year effort unless I can secure some Front Runners between 23 and 26" tall. Ran the 130 club last year and finding the 150 club a bit more expensive for this 1 man show. :-D
Thanks,
Britt

First, don't race on used tires unless you check the MFR date and look to make sure they haven't been "plugged".
Get all metal valve stems even if your organization does not require it.  They might.

Let me see what's cheap.  BRB.  (I'm a tire whoore, I've race on about 50+ different styles of tires, no kidding.  AutoX alone I tried 7 (forgot the Vette) different types.  LSR, I've run 4 different kinds, and drags?  You wouldn't believe me.)

Warning:  I'm 90% sure it was Kumho Ecsta's I used for destructive testing.

It was (Y) rated tire (186mph+).  I overloaded them 10%? and they exploded before getting much past 200mph, 203? I think.  My memory ain't what it used to be.

Lesson?  DO NOT OVERLOAD TIRES.  My guess is that's the #1 cause of tire failure in LSR.  Many folk run huge amounts of ballast.

A different model (Toyo) that was V-Rated, at under max load, went like 35 miles at 215mph before a small piece of tread broke off.  It was still driveable.

Road: M&H 22" and 24" are available thru Summit and Jegs a little over $100 a piece and are good over 200. They are an excellent tire and been used very sucessfully on many LSR vehicles.

I have a pair of brand new Goodyear drag front runners that have never been mounted.  They are Part number 1961 and are 23 x 5 -15.  If you still need them I will make you a great deal.
