Title: ECTA July 2012
Post by: Moxnix on July 07, 2012, 05:51:50 AM
Huh.  Parked at the locked gate @ 5:45 a.m.  Lotsa traffic but it's all turning in to the airport on the other side of the street, crossing the overpass and thru the "staff" gate.  I'm in no hurry, but kinda' jazzed.

Any info yet?

I had a call from our driver - 1st pass was @206. He said that the track will shut down from 12:00 to 1:00 for lunch -
That's all I know so far.

Left track oiled down at 11:30. broke for lunch and to shift to the right hand track. Hotter than 40 hells, well almost. Some cars seem to be having problems getting down track. Hooley shut down before half track... Amy does not do heat well. First pass 133.994. She said she was not focused. We hope to break 140.00 this afternoon or tomorrow morning. only about 75 or less entries including bikes. Keep cool...

Has Hooley made a full pass yet?

He was in line this afternoon about 4:30 ish. They called racining for about 30minutes for sprinkles and wind. then a couple of bikes ran then I think they called it a day. At very least Hooley will be at the front of the line toomorrow. Looks like some folk have bailed out for one reason or another.

Has Hooley made a full pass yet?

Hooley did make a full pass around 3:00 PM and it was either 206 or 208 (heat and CRS). His second chute got tangled up in the first but he did get it stopped safely. I talked to him after that run and he was going to try and get another run in before the track closes (6:00 PM). Not sure if he got another pass in this afternoon as I left just before the rains came.

Mike made a 181 shakedown, went for a full bore n2o run, something broke.
I'll let Dave fill in the rest, as he's there and I'm just going off of texts and FB

Here is what George Hake (PurplePckup) had to say about Hooley on the RRT board.

Well today was an interesting one. Temperature was over 100 degrees and humid but there was a gentle breeze so it was bearable. We got the car in line to run early and I was back in the pits with Ken and Charlie hoping to catch a video of Hooley's first run. There was a decent field of cars but not too many so the wait wasn't too long. You can always tell when 974 is coming because it is about the baddest sounding car there. We heard the roar and saw the orange Studebaker come roaring through the heat waves. A strong first gear then......silence as the Stude coasted by. When he broke the timing lights the speed was a blinding 35mph. Long story short, he lost all electrical and after a quick check Hooley found a corroded connector….probably years of Bonneville salt related.

Problem was quickly fixed and it was back to the staging lanes. The officials were watching this run to make sure there wasn’t any parachute problems after the tangle problem in April. The car made a decent run at 206 mph but there still was a chute issue which will be solved tomorrow by using just one chute. The fuel mixture was still the same as April when the temp was in the 40’s and Hooley said it felt rich so he made it a little leaner and got back in line just in time for a strong thunderstorm to pass through which took out most of the standing canopies, including ours. Of course the race was called for the day but we’re still in line and hope for a good trouble free, FAST run tomorrow morning. More storms are predicted for tomorrow afternoon but we’ll see. We’re having a great time in spite of the “issues”.

Nice Sunday afternoon, parked at the starting line.  Hooley made a couple of good passes today, but I'll let someone else post exact numbers.

Good thing no one is listenind to the audio, as my 4G hotspot went gunnysack late this morning.  However, as we are in Wilmington, the Verizon store is right near Walmart and after messing with computers for an hour, the guy that sold me this a few months ago showed me how to reset it with a paperclip.

I'll get some more audio going.  May leave mid-afternoon as I've an early morning activity back in MO tomorrow.  Too bad about the 4G, as both computers were doing very well w/o glitches.  Of course, I have 3G sticks which I failed to bring along forback up.  As the scouts say, be prepared.

Can you post a link to the audio broadcast?

Thanks to the FOUR and all the volunteers .Wider finish line was great ! Also the flags at turnoffs really good for those of us with hood scoops! Hot but really sweet event. Bob Stroud seminar was very informative. Now if there was a barry grant seminar, it would have helped our sputtering firebird. Looking forward to september and maybe the texas mile?
Not ready for bonneville yet; still debugging.

When the webcast is working, (cough, cough) our host is Meridix.  Search for them, open their homepage, put "landracing" in their search window, and you should get to the currently ongoing Landracing.com event, hit the "Listen Live" button and, after a few seconds, it should come through.

Events are archived, too, but all we do at ECTA is have background music and the CB announcements from the timing trailer.  Sunday afternoon a volunteer announcer filled in there and he was entertaining.  However, that's about the time my 4G hotspot went gunnysack until going over to the Verizon store and learning how to reset the gizmo with a straightened out paper clip.

Bonneville is much easier.

I've got a bunch of snapshots to post, as soon as the storm damage to our cable service here in Webster Groves is repaired and my Interwebs connection back on.

A beautiful Rambler two door out of Des Moines added nitro and went over 200 on Sunday.  Grandmas of the world would not believe it.

Still trying to recover from the heat! It was Bonneville Training Day at the Ohio Mile on Saturday!! :-(

Hooley did a 219+ on Sunday and one of the bikes did a 234+ on Saturday.

Will try to get some pix up later today or it may be tomorrow! Stay tuned!

A known car.
A known reaction in the pits when a racer goes really fast through the timing lights.

Great weekend.

Hotter than the hubs of ####.

Spent time with old friends and made some new ones.

I was really impressed by a couple of street cars that turned high speeds.

Great to see everyone as always, fun meet despite the heat.

Huge thanks to Mark Gordon for allowing me to make a pass on his naked turbo Busa. Awesome bike, and I got my ECTA Wilmington 2-club hat.

Here's a quick slide show of a few pics from the meet.

Sorry about the oil down on Saturday. Our vacuum system has a mind of its own. Decided to pump oil and not air thru the puke tank. Problem is being addressed and won't happen again. I Hope!!! Felt bad that Joe and Keith had to move the course in that heat. Wilmington is a class act. ECTA at Wilmington is a neat marriage. We were treated very well. Needed some band saw work and dropped into a machine shop. They dropped what they were doing and the shop foreman fixed us up.Would not take any money.
I have raced both in Europe and the States in a SCCA / FIA venue and this format  is as good as it gets. I would like to see the City get more info out. If we can get more spectators maybe ECTA could get some generators and Air Conditioners for the trailers.

The people of Wilmington have done backflips for us. Maybe the Dayton Air Show and the Goodguys meet in Columbus took away some spectators. Could 100 plus temps have also leaned out the crowds?

Woody,
I didn't know you were there. Why didn't you introduce yourself?
I was with the 3838 corvette.

Rob, now I remember you saying you would be with the Vette! I think my brain was truly fried and I wasn't in leathers or a fire suit!  :-(

Our next opportunities are Speed Week and Sept Ohio Mile!

Me and The Truck made several runs.  I'm new to trying to go fast with a Diesel and I didn't realize how heat sensitive they are.  I don't have an intake manifold temp readout but I'm sure the intercooler was only moderately useful.  I ran a 107+ and a 110+ on Sat AM and slowed to 101/102 in the afternoon  before hanging it up.  Came back on Sun AM and ran 111.7, giving me a record.  But another truck was there and I suspect he had a lot more engine mods than I have (I have just an Edge tuner).  He had a big ol' puff of black smoke at the line so I'm guessing big injectors and maybe even more turbo.  Anyhow, he ran 112.1 and I decided not to make another run as it was late in the day.  So we'll see how Truck does in the (hopefully) cooler weather of September.  And I have another tuner power level to try.....
