Title: Bonneville Legends at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts
Post by: streamliner on June 12, 2012, 03:37:20 PM
A great exhibit of some legendary cars is currently being held at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts in Salt Lake City.  In addition to the fine selection of racers, there are other events and activities surrounding the exhibit.  We were able to get a sneak peak where the Bonneville cars were well-represented.  Check out the site at : http://www.speedumfa.com/ and if you get a chance, go in person.  It's there until September 16...

Thanks for posting.  I just finished a book on Ab Jenkins and I would like to see his cars ( along with the others).  I am thinking that we could make a quick side trip on our way to the salt this August.  I did a google map and it does not look like it will be hard to get to from the interstate as we cross town from east to west.  I think the mileage will be about the same too.  I think the site said tickets are $18.  Cheap price considering the history you will see up close.

It is my understanding that you can't buy tickets at the door. You have to buy them beforehand. I'll try to find out more. Wayno

Speed: The Art of the Performance Automobile is a special time-ticketed exhibition. Tickets will be organized into specific time slots, and can be purchased in advance on the SmithsTix website, at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, or at various SmithsTix locations.

Just got back from the exhibit. There are some neat cars on display. While Bonneville is only part of the exhibit, there are several noteworthy cars there. Including Larry Miller's Cobra Daytona coupe. The gift shop area has frameworthy posters, hat pins of Ab Jenkin's , So-Cal tank, and other cars. Several related books and "the Boys of Bonneville" on DVD. All in all a worthwhile trip if you are in Salt Lake for a day or two before Speedweek. Beware though, if you are pulling a trailer, you may need to find a place to park it before going to the University.

I was concerned about getting tickets as I do not know what time of day we will arrive on our way to speedweek.  I emailed the mueseum and this was there reply.

"You can purchase tickets at our Museum front desk

Depending on crowds you may have to wait to enter the exhibition, however we have not had to ask patrons to wait before entering the exhibition thus far."

So, it looks like you can just drop by and take a chance.

When we went there were only about 10-20 people viewing the exhibit at the same time as us. Lines should not be a problem unless a huge group of racers show up at the same time.

Do they allow visitors to take pictures of the cars?

Some museums limit picture taking.

You made me laugh a little.   I bet you forgot about the pictures in the post above.  They were taken in the museum.  It is okay.  I do stuff like this all the time.

No I didn't forget about them, they might have been shot with "special access", or someone who was an "insider" to the exhibit, I just wanted to verify before I make special plans to go over there.

There is a local museum that has a wonderful collection of cars that restricts photography by visitors, but you can find "pirate" shots on the web of some of the cars.
Appearing on the web does not mean they are approved/allowed.

With the Leno talk, they are going to "open the hoods" and discuss the technical aspects of the cars on display. I wonder if Jay Leno or Ken Gross can descibe the technical aspects of Betsy's engine better than Al or Charlie Hamilton. $200.00 a ticket to the special event is a little extravagent to me. Cuts into my T-shirt fund at the salt. Besides I hear you can usually Catch Leno discussing cars for free at Bob's Big Boy..............

I stopped by on the way to speed week and spent the day with Wes Potter seeing part of the town as well. A great show. There is a book out on the cars at the show and great pictures. Maybe someday we will see the same type vehicles in the new Bonneville museum.

Woody, I often pull out a old book or magazine on LSR and spend a afternoon reading it. That art museum is nicely done and the store offers a lot of goodies.

Yes.  sn#0402AM.  Started life as a 375MM spyder racecar and rebodied for owners Roberto Rosselini / Ingrid Bergman by Scaglietti after it was heavily crashed.   I was part of the restoration team who brought it back to life and its current state.  These "big block" Ferrari's were incredibly fast in their day as spyders -- and this coupe is just a bit cleaner aerodynamically.

Last year about this time I saw a presentation by Bill Victor on a local 1954 Ferrari 375 Plus that was factory raced, crashed and burned, stolen then restored, and rediscovered. The car is now involved in a court battle and Bill has been involved as an expert witness.

The car was supposedly bought by a local man, Karl Kleves, from James Kimberly and he swapped the engine for something. They were welding on the car and it had a full belly pan with some leaky oil in it and it caught fire. They put the fire out and moved it outside. The car body sat in a grassy field and two local guys decided to steal it. They spent several weeks cutting some grass, moving it some, repeating until they got it to the road. They got caught and did time! Another guy had stolen the ID tag and tried to sell the car, too!

Later the motor was returned and then the car went missing and now they think a private collector in Belgium has it and USA has no extradition with Belgium. A very strange tale - just my quick recall! You really can't make this Subaru up!  :-o

Karl has since died and the family feud has begun. Estimated worth $4~$10 million!

Getting to see this Ferrari at the Speed exhibit was way cool. They were the AC Cobras of their time!

A guy brought one of these which was great: http://www.amazon.com/BBR-Ferrari-Carrera-Panamericana-Winner/dp/B002YWZCPA

[sorry for the Ferrari thread drift!]

0402?  I have this deep gut feeling that one day it will roll across the ramp at Pebble Beach again -- not just as a the class winner but Best of Show. (and first post-WWII car to do so)  I'm not the only one who thinks this is a strong possibility.  It truly is a fantastic automobile with race chassis, unique styling by a great coachbuilder and personality ownership.  And it is a blast to drive! (although rather warm inside)  One important note -- she might look pretty but she is driven hard and with enthusiasm on a regular basis by the owner.  Cars sitting in museums are cool but are even better when used properly.

The Kleve 375MM?  The whole story with legal documents, etc is here --> http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=114840.  Swaters who ended up with it I think never fully told the truth.  Question now does his estate possess it or does Ferrari itself?  (big question nobody has been able to answer yet) I wouldn't be surprised if there was another 5+ years of legal battles over this one.  No question it was stolen and deception played for years by Swaters in regard to that fact.

[end Ferrari thread drift]

Too bad they couldn't roll out all the cars out of the museum and bring them to Wendover for a pass or two down the salt.  I'd just love to hear the sound of some of them WOT and blasting down the salt for many of us who never saw them run originally.

Here's Bob Leppan briefly reviewing a few of the cars that were on display.  As usual, Leppan has a unique way with words.  Just a quickie compiled by the Boys of Bonneville producer/directors, Curt Wallin and John Greene...
