Probably a dumb question, the class we are going to run in is A-F 1350. The record speed is 200.492mph our bike is not going to achieve this speed, so are we bound by the SCTA rule that we need, "special tyres for racing as designated by the manufacturer must be used"
-
I'm pretty sure the answer to your question, Buzz, is yes. Build to the class record.
-
I'll go you one further, Bill. I'm positive that you'll need "race only" tires, Buzz. I have three sets of "spares" from Nate Jones -- but they aren't cheap. they will, though, pass tech with flying colors. PM if you want further information.

Bridgestone Bt-003rs. Good prices on them from Motorcycle Superstore.

This question comes up every two weeks it seems. The class record determines tire usage. It's the only safe way to operate.
-
Thanks guys, we figured it would be class ruling, which is understandable.
I will talk to our tyre sponsor as we are running quite narrow tyres, to see if they have anything that is suitable for us.
If not we will drop to the gas class as it is 194mph record, so we can run zr rated tyres.
-
That was going to be my next suggestion! :-D
-
By the way what kind of bike are you running?
-
Hi Fred, we are running an old skool Suzuki GSX1327. Check out Build Diary "saltbeEFE-full fat aircooled".
Just want to run an old 1980's GSX, as we did'nt see one on the salt when we was over in 2009. Like to see what it will do, if we can hang on to it:-D
So your record will stand for some time I'm sure.
Spoke to our tire sponsor who are Avon yesterday. They are looking at all out race tires that they will be testing at 200mph+ to conform with SCTA rules for our bike.
-
let us know what Avon comes up with. I've run the BT-003's and like them. Also ran the Bridgestone GP211A's and they were *ok*. The Bridgestones slipped on the rim below 28psi rear and the tread is separating after 2 seasons. The BT-003's headshake a bit in the dirt around 200mph but they're the best I've come across so far.
-
Shane, that headshake you are getting is interesting. Last year on my last run, 235mph, mine shook its head a couple of times. It was pretty scary. BT-003 front tire.

Hey Buzz
If you are going to run an all out race tyre, aim for a hard compound
Soft and mediums shred fairly quickly

The tire rule has kept me from running in SCTA -although I want to do it. The record in my class is 225 mph and I will need racing tires that I cannot find. My bike will do a little over 130 mph so there is a wide selection of tires with adequate speed ratings for the bike. I cannot use them. It is frustrating.
-
WW, yep the ruling is very frustraiting.. & quite ambiguous, but it is the rules & they must be adhered to.
Our class record is 200.493 & like u our bike wont go 200, so for 1/2 mph a ZR tyre aint no good.
Waiting for the Head of Tyre Design at Avon to give us the final answer this week hopefully, if its a no the its A-G class for us so we will just have to run numbers :-(
