If you are thinking about building a "radiator in tank" cooling system for your car I have the perfect radiator, pro built by Ron Davis, 23x4x3.5 thick. Using a full size radiator is a giant case of over kill, this radiator in a good tank will cool a 500 hp + engine no problem and you won't have a huge tank. $150 you pay shipping.

Oh, good lord. I can't change out a set of floats without Buddy swooping in on all the good stuff.

Sorry Chris!
Stan convinced me that I needed the water in the rear of the car for weight, and not in the front.
Woody convinced me that pressurizing my tank was, at the least, going to 'bulge' it.
Rex's post convinced me I need a 'radiator in a box'.
I, therefore, convinced the wife that I needed the money for this! :-D
-
Chris,
I can get another one if you really want one, I think, I also have a set of great approx 15 x15 x 3-1/2 thick double pass radiators, also Ron Davis fabed, if you think that might work for you better. Let me know.

Thanks, Rex, but no, that's okay. I fished out the drain for the bathtub today - that's enough plumbing for one season. :-D
-
An advantage with a radiator in a tank is that the tank doesn't need to be pressurized and its size isn't critical . As long as the engine water contains antifreeze or is pressurized the tank water can boil harmlessly . The lower boiling temperature at 4200' is an advantage . As long as the tank radiator is submerged the return water won't go much above 204 deg .

There is some good logic here!.... I am going to have to remember all of this!.... especially the last line....

I had Buddy beat to the gun but passed when I decided that I needed to stick to my original plan...........which means one of those 15x15 rads might work Rex. Can you shoot me a couple pictures and a price? Thanks, Trent
-
Trent,
Here are a couple of pictures of the double pass radiator. Dimensions are 15 inches side to side and 15-1/2 across tank, 3-5/8 wide across tanks, core is 3 inch, connections are 1-1/2 and 1/3/8 inch. This is a double pass radiator so it works very well with lower flow water pumps. $150 plus shipping.

Thanks for the shots Rex, I am in a holding pattern for the moment.

I just shipped this one to a guy in Idaho that is building a really bitchen 34 modified comp coupe for Bonneville.
I do know where there are more.

I may be interested in one but waiting to get the car home first. Are these something that may be availible in the next few months?
-
Thundersalt,
I was planning to put the 15 x15 in my little modifed but ended up selling but I think I can get at least one maybe two more and I am going to the supplier today to check. I'll let you know.

I just got two more of the 15 x 15 double pass units and another of the long narrow units. Again they are $150 each plus shipping. These are in great shape and pro built, Ron Davis.

I still have two of the 15x15 double pass units and one of the long narrow 24x4x3.5 radiators. If you are building something and want to go with the "radiator in a tank" cooling option both of these will work. Buddy, Flat Cad Racing, has had great luck with his. Give me a call: 707-484-5721 or E mail: rexschimmer@gmail.com.
Price is $150 each plus shipping.

OK Rex, I NEED the 15x15, no way around it with the layout of the car. Any ideas on an intercooler similar that I can piggyback in the ice/water tank?
-
T man,
Give me a call or drop a personal E mail to me with your address and I will get it on the way. I don't have a contact for an intercooler , sorry.

Thanks Rex! Another part bought from a fellow racer here!~

Rex, I have been considering the 24x4 for the wifes camaro C/GALTfor a while. I can't seem to keep it cool within reason. How big of a tank do you recon I would have to put it in, in your opion. We run the ECTA mile in wilmington.
-
Frank, I have that same unit in a 20 gallon tank, and after 3 miles, it doesn't even melt half of the ice! I think I could run plain water, or use half of the size tank I have.
Don't forget, mine's a blown flathead, and still never gets over 185 degrees. It's one of the best things I bought for the car!

Thanks for the info Flattie, that helps. I have plenty of room for a 20 gal. tank. I'll do some calculations to see now small I can get away with.

Buddy --
We've got the same (or more) HP as you -- run 5 miles with less than 18 gal. and have never been over 185 either. With no extra radiator and fittings to screw around with.

Are these limited supply items, as in "when they are gone, they're gone" or do you have them fabbed in batches? Very interested in the 15x15 unit but money is a bit tight since I think I finally found a largely unmolested Regal to build.
-
I thought I would give this post a jack as there is renewed interest in the "radiator in a box" idea.

SOLD!!! Last one went to Montana for a flat motor.
I'll have to check with my supplier for more.
