Title: Looking for a Source
Post by: Peter Jack on January 11, 2012, 04:21:42 AM
I'm looking for a source for the oval aluminum tubing shown in the picture or something similar. The tubing is about 18 mm on the short axis and about 35 mm on the long axis with a 2 mm wall (all measurements taken with a tape). I'm also looking for a larger size that this one will slip into, preferably with a reasonably decent fit. I need about ten feet of each. It must be a weldable alloy.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Pete

You try Aircraft Spruce?

That was my very first try Trent. They have aerodynamic tubing in one size but not the symmetrical tubing I'm looking for. I also need a little more wall thickness than generally found in aircraft. There's going to be a small compression loading on the tubing lengthwise and some angular loading although neither is great.

Pete, you might try searching the net for custom aluminum extrusions or extruders cause you ain't going to get this from Ace Hardware...............   Bob

This came up here or on the HAMB, I forget. I seem to remember cromo being ran through a rollar and ovalized. Might have been a Ron Covell deal?

Doing some searching for you PJ. Here is some streamline stuff I found. All taken off HAMB searches.

Thanks Trent. The tubing has to be aluminum and the shape symmetrical. I may try a short test piece using the home brew method.

The funny thing about that is that I used to follow the Kansas City Dawn Patrol guys fairly regularly when I used to read Kitplanes Magazine. They do some scary stuff, but they're also pretty innovative and not afraid to try something. It's just that I want to be really close to the ground when I'm trying something a little different.

Boy do I ever like the way the spell check works now. :-D :-D :-D
