Title: On the scene at World of Speed 2011
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on September 11, 2011, 09:13:33 PM
Well, here we are - all checked in at the motel and the trailer is at the pits and the show starts tomorrow.  First things first:

Here's my usual photo or two of the salt conditions, shown by the salt accumulation on the tires of the truck and trailer from driving from Land's End to the pits:

Not bad, hey?  It's hard and dry, doesn't stick to your shoes (nor to your fingers, unlike some chocolate candies).  The salt is still bumpy for about the first mile from Land's End toward the pits, and then smooths out as it did at SpeedWeek.

Tourists will never learn:

And there's this one, a little closer to the road:

The speed limit on the pavement is still 45, folks -- don't contribute needlessly to the Counties' coffers.

The USFRA folks are using the same setup that SCTA did for SpeedWeek - to the point that the pits are in the same location.  Heck, impound is in the same place so much that the corner of it is within a few feet of the corner markings form SW.  Our trailer is pitted within a few feet of where we were last month (I set a point in the GPS).

And the salt looks great.  Here's what a cloud over Wendover looks like from the salt:

But it's not rain, more like dust.  I think.   We saw rain when we stopped in Tooele for a bite to eat - and we got all of about one teaspoon of water sprinkled on the windshield.  No rain, 80 degrees, winds about 6-12 MPH from the east (at the pits).

Let's use this thread for the event, folks.  I'll go through and merge others as it becomes worthwhile, but I won't try to close something that really oughta be by itself.

Let's go RACING :-D :-D :-D!!!

Strange weather pattern for Utah.  Our rain yesterday came from the EAST.  Almost NEVER happens.  The forecast looks like great racing weather.

Well, here's the latest:

No running today -- it's inspections-only.  But I got a bunch of photos of some of the vehicles and folks.  To summarise what else is going on -- the guy that'll be running the audio streaming is here and working on it as of about six hours ago.  He's already testing - but we won't have anything to feed 'til AM 1610 and the CB are on the air.  But we're getting things ready.

Drivers meeting is 8AM Bonneville time tomorrow, followed by the usual course ride -- and racing around 10 or so.

There were not all that many vehicles going through inspection today.  Steady traffic - but no huge long lines, 'specially in the bike section of inspection.  I worked with Wa for the first few hours -- he did most of the bikes.  Then Tom Evans arrived and took over for me -- whew, I must have looked at darn near 7 or 8 bikes!  Wow, what a day  :-D!  Cars -- there were two or three lines going non-stop, but I don't think anyone had a wait of more than an hour or so.  Nice, nice.  And conditions -- gentle breezes and mostly sunny skies, so there wasn't much discomfort while waiting.  The breeze picked up towards 4OPM -- picked up to about 15-20 mph tailwind.  Dang  -- why couldn't we have been running?

Okay, photos:

By the way, remember that there are 130 Club and 150 Club vehicles here, too:

And some aren't even race cars -- just worth noting:

The Save The Salt trailer is here -- selling stuff and working for us to have a great racing venue forever:

I'll post this and then go -- to the USFRA worker picnic in a little while.  I've got some more photos for later on.  Remember -- racing will start around 10 tomorrow morning, or thereabouts.  And about the audio -- hey, I'll find out and let you kow how to get it on your 'puter -- or your office PA system  .

Back from a dandy thank you meal.  Mike Crawford, Wendover's mayor, makes sure the USFRA (or, at SpeedWeek, the SCTA) volunteer workers get thanked by the city for all that the racers bring to the town.  Not bad food, either -- not just hamburgers and hot dogs and chicken breasts and corn on the cob and salads and so on --  but even shrimp linguine cooked to order while you wait!  Decent.  And -- Mike offered some mock-ups of the billboard that's been proposed for the proposed Bonneville Racing Museum site just off the northwest side of Wendover Boulevard at the north end of town (kind of across the street from CarQuest).  Mike's got the 5-acre plot of land arranged to be secured and is working on a tourism grant to fund it.  Here's my funky available-light shot of the art from the sign company (remember, it's a layout - not necessarily the final thing):

If you look at the site today you'll see a billboard that's blank on one side and has an ad for the Red Garter on the other.  You can probably recognize the sign's location from that description.  Anyway, Mike and the rest of the city will know about the deal's progress in the next week, he says.  Thanks very much for that, Mr. Mayor.

Back to more photos from inspection day, including cars, bikes, and other stuff in the pits.  I didn't take a photo of the Joint Venture truck - but it has gone through inspection and will be running.  So will Joe Ledford's roadster and a bunch of other vehicles I didn't photograph.  Maybe tomorrow, maybe Ray will get 'em.

Skip Higginbotham's car is loo-oo-oo-nn-n-gg -- so here's most of it:

Here's some more:

GSXR-1000, right?

A Velocette from Australia!

A couple of B-King Suzukis (I think that's what they're called -- sorta a street bike with the basic same engine as in a 'Busa, but tuned different, right?):

That 1000cc Suzuki is Lee Burkey's bike. Haven't seen Lee in a couple of years out there. The bike is intersting because its running mechanical fuel injection - or was a few years back. When Lee started that project Don Vesco teased him until he put two turbos on it. Pretty nifty bike and rider who is in his 70's. Once of the nicest guys out there, been a real pleasure knowing him for many years.

#1161 Bike is the John Minonno bike. He has gone real fast with this blown pushrod engine (high 220's - might have even hit 230's last time out) - always look for Minonno - because something intersting is going to happen. First sit-on rider to get his AA License at 256 mph exit speed on a triumph in mid 1990's. Fantastic person to know - and will honestly always make you laugh no matter the situation - even when he got burned a few years back he was cracking jokes. An hour in hit pits will always make your trip to the salt worth it.

Lee's bike put him in the 2 Club while Don was still alive.

There may be someone else riding it. I don't think Lee wanted much more of it.

I will apologize if I am speaking out of the side of my mouth.

Today's first update:

We're RACING!!!

Now that tha's over, Kurt is working with the audio system and it'll be up soon.  We'll be doing the same basic routine as last year -- using Meridix for the audio.  As soon as he gets the address for the link I'll post it here.

We're going to be a bit left-handed, so to speak, today - because the AM radio I brought doesn't pick up enough radio signal to completely blank out the ignition noise & hash from the generator.  So - today we'll run out of the front seat of the car using the 12V/110VAC system there and the audio will get into the system via the built-in 'puter microphone.  We don't have a long cable to run from the radio output to the computer input - but if we did (and hope to find one today) we'd put the AM radio outside of the trailer where signal is stronger and then feed directly into the system.

Other audio things:  Meridix archives all of the audio, so you'll be able to go there (again, we'll point you in the right direction) and listen tonight - or next week, or for a good long time in the future.  If you're at work today and the boss won't let you listen to the audio live -- you'll be able to hear it later one.

That's it for now.  Stay tuned, and in a little while I'll get that link here for you.

Here's the URL for the Meridix - but the audio hasn't made it through the pipe yet.  Click on this and then there's a green button on which to click for the live audio.  Nothing yet - but getting closer by the second.

Jon, sounds good in Beerhaven - and if you're within a 2 square block area in Walkers Point, you can pick up the broadcast on my little one-lung, .02 watt transmitter at 169.505 mhz.

That's right - I'm relaying the broadcast - just don't tell the FCC.

Chris, we don't have a directional pickup for the cars and bikes as they run past the pits.  Something to work on, eh?  We got a slow start this a.m., the same glitch that slowed our first webcast last year.  We keep learning and have a few things on the list for next year.

Pale as it may in comparison to streaming Audio, here are some photos:

I'm still having rocker arm problems.  Maybe with some silly putty and baling wire....

And for my El Camino friends, "Peggy's Pickup" running in AA/CPro.

Actually, an omnidirectional mic would be best - less wind buffeting and a more accurate representation of what's going on around you.

I can dig one up.

Again - well done.

The Laguna complete front end is interchangeable with the El Camino.  A buddy put a Pontiac complete nose on an El Camino several years ago.  GMC also produced their own version, Conquistador, I believe.  They're all designed on the same platform.  I don't remember the Laguna nose being offered as stock configuration, though.

Ray --

Concerning Peggy's Pickup -- was that front end available on El Caminos?

Stan

Like TMan said, there was a special edition in 1975...I can't remember the name, either...that had the Laguna S-3 nose...sorta like they did with the Choo-Choo Custom Monte Carlo SS style noses in 84-88,  I put a Choo-Choo nose on my 80:

The attached photo describes my day:  Dick Milne and Marlo Treit (and Korey Bligh and Don Pierson and Chris Lindh) working on my Monte Carlo.  I'll write something up on what they did, but for now let it suffice to say that they overcame a ton of problems that would have had me going in circles for a long time.  I'm deeply grateful to all of them for their help...although Marlo said that he'd hoped to make a nickle on the deal so I gave him one.  :)

I still have a few things left to do on the car after tech, but they're minor.  I hope to run it tomorrow sometime.  The 130 Club drivers meeting is at 8 am.  I hope we can get it thru tech again right after that.

I'll post a few more photos as well as a write-up of what went on with my car after I get a bite to eat.

Thanks for all the comments, folks, and thanks, Glen, for reminding me to try to get a run list or something from USFRA.  I'll ask in the morning if they'll let me have one to post.

Thanks go to Moxnix for getting the audio up and running.  I had planned to operate it out of our pit trailer -- 'til when we picked it up at the race shop where we had left it after SpeedWeek.  The vandals had not just stolen the trailer wiring pigtail by cutting it off at the frame -- no, they cut it and shorted the ground and the 12VDC lead that takes juice from the truck -- to the deep cycle storage battery in the trailer.  So -- the short created enough heat while draining that battery -- that most of the trailer wiring is melted here and there and every danged place.  So -- gotta get the whole thing rewired before we can hit the road with it after Finals.  And in the meantime, Moxnix is running the system out of the front seat of his car.  Thanks go to him, folks.  If you happen to feel like offering a donation to the site for what we're trying to do - mark it with a note of how much I should give to him out of what you send.  Don't you worry -- he's getting some monetary thanks from landracing.com -- from Nancy and me as well as you racers out there in internet-land.

As for other stuff -- well, Nancy made a couple of runs today, the first right at 200 and the second, about 3PM when the course had gone a bit slick, at around 198,7 or so.  Ray the Rat, as he's already posted, is working on his 130 Club car.  And now you know why neither of us posted many photos.

There were about 10 vehicles in impound as we left the salt at the end of racing today.  Doug with the Salt Cat lakester (I heard 206 in the last mile, and I know the record had been in the 167 range), the BYU electric car, Fred Vance's APSF 1350 'Busa at about 231 on a 218 record, and so on.  Return runs start in the morning, Ron Christensen will have AM1610 on the air then, and we oughta have the streaming audio running, too -- so you might just be able to hear the record runs.

C  U  Later.

Moxnix - It's a solid transmission.

On the CB transmissions, I'm hearing some hum in the background.

If I'm not mistaken, Slim planned to take the speaker output of the CB into the AV1-A direct box, which knocks it down to a balanced mic level input.  If that is indeed how it's wired, try flipping the ground switch on the AV1-A - the hum might go away.

Thanks for the hard work.

An update, some photos and...whatever.

First:  The Granite Falls HS car went thru tech this morning.  They seemed to do pretty well, except that the inspector wanted them to have a sealing valve on their fuel tank vent line...which is about one-quarter the size of a very small soda straw.  The scratched their heads over that while we were there with my car.

First photo is the GFHS Urban Concept car in tech.

Next is the discussion about the vent and valve.

Then we got my car back thru tech by using a nylon ratcheting tie-down strap as a battery hold-down.  We explored a whole buncha different options and this was the one we decided on.  I asked the inspector if that would be ok while at the drivers meeting and he said, "fine."  Apparently we weren't the only ones with stock Chevy battry mounts to get bounced, cuz the parts store in town had completely sold out of 'em.  We also had to tape the wheel balancing weights, add a retainer for the braided fuel line and replace a plastic valve stem cap with a metal one.  All in all, it wasn't too bad.

The photo is of Chris Lindh (the guy who provided the carb for me and made it possible to get here) after he took it thru tech.

They've changed rules or interpretation of 'em this year.  Last year two of us entered the same car (truck) at the same time and took turns running it.  This year they won't allow a 2nd person to to enter until the first driver completes his runs.  They've also eliminated the calibration run (which allowed the first driver a 6th run) and I wish they hadn't done that.
$10 a gallon) and headed for the starting line.  More on that after a while.

I would like to clear up the Salt Cat issue.

The Bonneville 200 MPH Club website shows a minimum speed for membership of 210 MPH.  The 200 MPH Club record of members, records/minimums has an open qualification speed of 200 MPH.  The website minimum for the XXO/BGL class refers to the XO/BGL class where the record is now 211.  Thre are sometimes errors between the website and the current record book. When there is a discrepency between the website and the record book the record book always triumphs.  The Salt Cat has the record of 204 MPH. Doug Grieve, the driver, is the newest member of the Bonneville 200 MPH Club.  Congratulations to Salt Cat racing.

Thanks for the update Warner, I knew you would clear that up.

Moxnix, thanks for the audio, some text and writing would be nice to accompany the audio maybe some pics. I know all are busy, but some cannot get the audio, but I think everybody can read updates just not all can listen to updates. So if you were not on audio you would think things are not going out there.

The audio is awesome that I listened to yesterday.

Thanks all

The next 4 photos show the car as it leaves the line and heads down the salt to a top speed of 26 mph and change.  Since the car was built for fuel economy and not top speed, it's a huge accomplishment just to make that run.

And then there was my second run.

I had a little wheelspin in first, but when I got into 2nd, it pulled strong, then thru 3rd and into 4th.  The GPS showed 137 and I was feeling pretty good about the run when it went BANG!!! and I felt/heard something thrashing around under the car.

It was the driveshaft which went to h*ll when the pinion yoke snapped.  It beat itself into a pretzel shape, punched some holes in the floor pan and destroyed the exhaust.

Marlo, Dick and Korey were good enough to come rescue me.  They were gonna put the car on the trailer, but there's no way to drive it on and it can't be pulled from the front without hurting the front air dam.  So they decided that since Marlo had experience at racing cars in reverse (we won't pursue that any further) that he'd steer the car as they pulled it back to the pits with a tow strap wrapped around the rear shock mounts.

Eventually they decided this wasn't such a good idea and wrapped the tow strap around the A pillars across the dashboard and brought it back to the pits nose first.

I'm VERY grateful for the help I got from all the Target 550 guys.  If it hadn't been for their help, I probably wouldn't have made a single run.  I learned a TON of stuff from them (at the expense of any pride and ego I might have had left) and even got to wear a pink GFHS t-shirt today.  I think that might be a good thing.  :)

Anyway, the car's finished for this event (this year) but I'll be back having learned more than I wanted to, but with salt fever still intact.

Great coverage of the Granite Falls project. We ALL need to encourage efforts like it IMHOP.

RTR, my condolences. There are two OUTSTANDING driveshaft fabricators in yrs truly's area.

Inland empire Driveline in Guasti, Ca. and Ed Moore Drivelines in San Bernardino, Ca. Both understand racers needs.

Moore, incidently is the former driver ot the "MOB" fuel altered and ,in his engine building days, built the motor for '55 Chevy that paced the local San Berdoo Doctor on his bicycle, to, at that time, the fastest ever human vehicle speed.
The good Doctor ran to the Salt Flats from Wendover each race day, by the way.

Any other you/us dudes ever did that? Or wanna try?

I'm reasonably confident that although I've driven cars with non-serviceable drive shafts and exhausts that could have been more securely attached ,I've never been there. Good effort Ray.

Best of luck to everyone on the salt.

I wonder if they'll cover it under warranty.

Sorta like the 4400 pound trailer ramps I bought that sagged and twisted.  I'm gonna take those back to the seller and politely ask for a refund...or the phone number of their defense attorney.  :)

Bystander -

Running - no.  Bicycling - well . . .

I shipped my bicycle out to Wendover last month with every intent of bicycling back and forth from the KOA camp to the salt.  Good exercise, but the ungroomed salt proved to be an eye opener when I realized that the front wheel was sliding out from under me.

It looks easy - pretty flat and all, once you're out of West Wendover - but the frontage road and the road to Land's End is longer than one remembers in a car.  And once you're done chatting with Lynda, you're still 15 minutes to the pits.

Then some foreign press correspondents took pity on me and offered to haul my dried up old carcass around in a very sweet Mustang GT.  Thanks, Simon, Doc.

I like staying fit, but I ain't stupid.

I'm glad when ANY vintage engine vehicle, car or bike, make it into the 2 Club.

Atta boy to Dick Knorr for getting his Opel GT with 4200 GM 6 over 200...He only needs a couple of more mph to qualify.........JD

Drat Ray that is no fun.. sorry to hear you are done for this year.

I hate it when the drive line tries to come up and join you inside the car, and they are real noisy when they are knocking on the floor pan and other assorted parts down there.

Killed several driveshafts/u joints with my 392 hemi until I sorted out the U joint angles under load.
You might want to check what your joint angles where when the rear diff nose comes up under acceleration and shifts.
That is what I always munched the rear you joint, until I put tapered shims in the rear springs to get the U-joint angles down to reasonable numbers and a pinion snubber so the pinion did not climb the ring gear far enough to break the U-joint.

Also make sure the drive shaft was the right length if the length is a little too long and the suspension squat stacks the splines solid it will also blow the U-joint. Not sure how much differential movement you have on your rear suspension though but worth verifying when you get the replacement built.

Put a big load of stuff in the trunk to squat the rear end and check your free play on the splines and angles.

Congratulations to the Granite Falls HS Urban Concept car team!!

It would be interesting to create a high school car class to get some other student auto shop groups out there on the salt flats each year.  Perhaps a challenge with a small rotax engine or some "standard" power plant that was affordable and easy to work with.

Dr F?
.

Sure, I'll be yer huckleberry. But I run/ride all the time anyway. The Docs record was broken by John Howard BTW. Vescos modified thier liner for him to pace behind. That was 83/4ish when I was a kid and getting into road racing at that time.

For those of you that aren't listening to the streaming audio, there was an incident this morning - a health-related, not an accident.  The ambulance took the person to town and racing had to stop while the ambulance was gone.  The waiting continued 'til about 9.15 (15 minutes ago), and it's just now that we're making the final four or five return runs from yesterday.  Once the remaining vehicles have run - and that's gonna be any minute now -- we'll reset and start qualifying runs for this Thursday.  There are quite a few racers in line for qualifying, so waiting will be long if we leave the pits now.

Nancy is ready to run -- but since there's a long wait -- we might stay here for a while, I'll try to make some updates, and later we'll mosey down to the line for her to run.  I'll post and then continue.

Sam Dakin just ran 124.915 in the mile on his return run from yesterday's qualifier, and since he was running on an open record -- which qualifier was where he had steering issues yesterday and ran 77 -- his new record average will be right around 101.106.  Not bad -- on that first run he had dang no steering abaility -- had to muscle a frozen steering head bearing through the lights abefore turning out yesterday.

All of yesterday's qualifiers backed up their records this morning -- a 100% average, right?  Sure hope the salt (which, by the way, is a new course this morning -- moved the course over last night after racing quit) holds out 'til we run.

We're just ending a quick hold to look for the video camera from Stainless' Bockscar.  It was searched for, sought, and seeked -- and can't be found, so we're getting ready to resume running.  Stewards are back in position to resume.

120 or so registered land speed racers, plus about 85 130 Club cars (per Ron on the radio) at this event.

Try going to Meridix, on their link for fans there is a support botton on the top of the page.  The support page, scroll down to the hints for Firefox and Mac OS.  They tell you what players you might need.

Thanks for the tip. Seems that since last year they have had some upgrades that needed to be uploaded on the Mac from Meridix.

If any one is having trouble with their Mac receiving the audio feed, just go to: http://www.meridix.com/support/ and follow the instruction to update your system.

Audio comes in great. Thank you very much for all of your efforts

Richard Assen is in line right behind us -- not Greg Watters as I earlier said.  They're here for some test and tune before the Shootout next week.  As for DeLuca -- he's up ahead, no sign of Steve Knecum.  Jon Minnono made a run about an hour ago and turned out at the three and a half - no word from him yet why he did that.

I'll see if I can get some stories for you, Joe.  In the meantime -- here are a few dozen photos of who's in line at Thursday noontime at the 2011 World of Speed:

There -- that oughta keep you busy for a while.  By the way--most of the photos I've been taking are medium size files (1-2Mb) - so you can get decent quality if you want it.  If you need to see them as links in stead of just here -- you're welcome to go to www.photobucket.com and then the Seldom Seen Slim page(s), and finally scroll down to the World of Speed 2011 album.  It's open to the public - and there you can grab the images directly.  Help yourself.

By the way -- these threee dozen or so vehicles were the ones in front of Nancy and me in line.  There's another dozen or so behind us already.  At the rate the line is moving -- we've been here for two hours ++ and have at least another hour or two to wait before we run.

Glen, the 444 Vesco Little Giant is about a half-dozen cars behind us in the line.  I think this'll be their first run of the day.

\In case you didn't see the earlier post, folks, a crew member of one of the race vehicles had a medical emergency about at the line this morning, so the ambulance was off the salt with said  crew for a while - during record return runs.  That's what put everything way behind schedule and why the lines are so long this morning.

A 150 Club car just ran and qualified.

I agree with that, it would be helpful if you repeated the essentials of whats announced on the CB.

We broadcast just what we get from the USFRA broadcast on AM radio.  Their station is at the starting line, we are at the Landracing trailer in the pits.  Perhaps we can pass along the suggestion.

It would be entertaining to get a count of those on the audio link.  I wonder if Meridix could tell us.

After yesterday's fun and games (and phone calls half the night) I decided to sleep in this morning.  It's been too long since I got a good night's sleep...so I'm a little more rested today and have been making the rounds of the pits and Impound.

First thing:

The rider who laid his bike down yesterday is Noel Petersen (or Peterson...I dunno.) He was taken to a hospital in SLC and treated for a broken collarbone and cracked ribs.  He's being held for medication stabilization but he's a racer, so he'll be back out here tomorrow.  I don't think he'll race, but he'll be where he belongs.

Some photos:

One of the many VWs in competition here.  I don't think this one is part of the 36 HP Challenge, or maybe it's a variation on the theme.  The owner said that as they were preparing to leave the blower froze up, so they were removing it to run normally aspirated.  He didn't think it would be quite as fast.  :)

Then I dropped in on the GFHS pits where I was greeted by a smiling Micheal Werner who informed me that the run they mad this morning fell victim to a timing light failure, although Tim said that his on-board speedo showed speeds around 29 and 30...almost a 20 percent increase over yesterday's run.

Speaking of Tim, he's adjusting the drive train as I told him about Freud's suggestion that he get an agent.  He gave me a blank look and I explained that he'd prolly need one to deal with his new-found fame and notoriety.  :)   Btw, he's been with the project since the beginning.  I'd guess that he knows as much about the car as anyone on the team.

Finally, an up close and personal look at a 130 Club Stude.  Looks kinda friendly.  :)

Thats great Glen, Hammonds sure have a great car....

Hope to hear more on Rhonnie Vesco - maybe the next woman in the 300 mph club or will it be Tegan Hammond. What a good story that could be.. Race to the next female 300 mph club member. Only if we knew more details.... One in a B/GL and other in a D/GS. Who will it be.....

Some shots of the Joint Venture diesel.

Students from local high schools are getting some first hand info on the truck and its humongous drive train

Exhaust roils out of one of the stacks as the valve gear is visible with the valve cover off.

Some of the parts they replaced: Cylinder liners, pistons, cylinder head and more.

Finally, there's a special message on the front of the Bucket List Dream Avanti.

Now that I'm back at the motel, I can post some of the photos I shot earlier.  Using my Android phone to tether my laptop to the web is functional...sometimes, but it's a royal PITA.

Anyway, here are a few from Impound earlier in the day.

The Charles Reno Modified Roadster,

Those Salt Cats are back again after making a 216 run with a real hot motor,

Sam Dakin's turbo Sportster sidecar that made it to impound after replacing the rusted-solid steering-head bearing...

...and the bearing itself.  Sam described it as, "after we cleaned it up a lot."  Sheesh!

Nancy did get in one run -- after 4 1/2 hours in line.  192 quarter, 195 first mile, 199.7 middle mile, 199.8 last mile, 199.9 back door.  Dang, what's going on?  Is there a speed limiter in the thing?  So -- nothing to do but change gear and try again in the morning.  This was her best - most aggressive - leave yet, and while we thought she'd have time for the bike to pull itself faster -- well, I used some JB Weld to put an extra tooth* on one gear, and filed one off the other sprocket.  Or something -- won't tell you what I really did 'til it proves that I made it way better - or way worse.  But gotta try something. . .

*I put the tooth on the side of the gear -- the perimeter was really full of 'em already.

Other than that -- they were still running when we left the salt at about 6.30.  I thought they closed the pits to everyone at 6 and closed the salt at 6.30 -- but -- nope, still running.  I saw the Knecum/DeLuca trailer in impound as we drove out, and Sam Dakin's bike back in there, and of course the Hammond car, and there was traffic then and I couldn't see who else was in there.  More later - but going to supper with Scott Guthrie now.

The last batch of the evening.

First is Chris Lindh whose help with a carburetor and fuel delivery system made it possible for me to be on the salt.  When I broke my car, Jim Halladay, aka Texican gave Chris a ride in his truck.

At Jim's prompting, he's posing with his helmet cradled in his arm....

...and then he launched and got the best speed that truck's seen: 112.8.

...and a Suzuki (I guess it's a Kizashi...I don't think I can say that name out loud without adding, "Gesundheit!"); I didn't hear how fast it ran...

...I was too busy being amazed at the Karmann Ghia that ran 136 or thereabouts.  I asked Carlos if it was  blown and he said, no, naturally aspirated."  My jaw musta dropped big time cuz he and Steve (the other staging lane dude on the 130 course) got a good laugh at my reaction....then said, "yeah.  That's what we did when we heard what he ran the first time!"

T2011 increased their speed by a little more than 10% over yesterday to 29.83870 mph !   And then we did something really bold...we read the engine manual section about fuel and governor control, yup = some adjustments and behind the pit driving; we figure we now are giving it the fuel it needs and not the "black smoke" more.  Going for an early morning "thick HP/Speed air" run.....

the bigger event today was the visiting 6th grade Morningside Elementary class from Salt Lake City - all of a sudden there was a flurry of activity in and near our pit area - lots of learning and exploring resulting in a great group photo.

The reception and connections made here have been just wonderful - thank you all.....

Oops.  I dunno where the sidecar idea came from.  But I don't like the sound of turbo bearings getting eaten.  Seems like far too many sacrifices are being made to the gods of speed.

Still in town -- with a few stray raindrops and strong winds.  The clouds are a bit less threatening, but I gotta believe Kurt that there's no racing going on now.  We're heading out there in a few minutes (gotta get ice for the cooler first -- hope springs eternal that things'll get all better soon), and will add to his reports.  Also we'll take advantage of some downtime (if that's what there is) to go make the arrangements to have the triler re-wired while we're gone form Bonneville in the next two weeks.

It's 9:00, we just got here.  No one in line since there's a hold due to winds left to right at about 8 mph.(at the line)  Looks more like 15 mph in the pits.  Seems like many racers are bailing out so if the wind dies, it'll be laps.  Only a spattering of rain.

Stay tuned, boys and girls.  We'll update as the weather continues. :-)

Weather report from the salt: lousy.
At 8 am the sky was completely cloudy with moderate winds....the sun was shining thru holes in the clouds (crepuscular rays of sunlight, 1st photo) and things looked uncertain.

10 minutes ago the wind calmed to almost nothing and the 2nd photo shows a line of clouds that seemed to be moving north with clear skies following.

As I was editing the photos, the wind has picked up to around 25-30 mph with a few drops of rain falling every once in a while.  The temperature feels like it's dropped by 10-15 degrees and all in all, it ain't too good.  Nobody's even thinking about running (especially the USFRA officials) at this time.

10.26AM and Mark Deluca has just left the line -- the first return run today.  Ran 231.475 on a 217.303 record, new average 224,953.

It's sprinkling here at the line - enough that I've gotta use the wipers every two or three minutes.  We're first in line for qualifying.  Charles Reno is right in front of us - the last return run of this morning.

John Stege's La Poderosa (no "N") is leaving the line.  223.470  and 223.688 first and second mile yesterday.  222.956 in the middle mile right now.

223.595 is his new record speed.  The rain continues.

Bike 826 is next, running on a 215.433 record.  I'm waiting to hear what he ran yesterday.  216.896 yesterday's qualifier.

Today:  Sounding strong at the 1 1/2, quarter mile 219.208, mile 220.596, middle mile 218.998, last mile not reported.  (post)
Title: Re: On the scene at World of Speed 2011

Other stuff:  Yesterday Charles Reno ran a 249 - which is decent, but he's running against a 250 minimum.  The rain oughta be helping the course -- since it's been so dry the salt is hard and "dusty", so some rain should help solidify things.

Sorry -- got busy talking with Ron Main.  While I was busy -- Rhonnie Vesco ran the 444 car to a new 310 record.  Nice -- blue hat for her.  Tegan Hammond is in the return run line, too -- we're seeing a shootout for fast woman of the meet.  Great stuff :-D :-D

It's just before 11AM.  The rain is pretty well stopped - just a few drops showing up on the windshield.  The 6666 Opel just left the line, still running the return runs.

195.465 first mile, middle mile 201.505, last mile 201.941, (Gail Phillip's 202.098 record, by the way) nope -- not quite good enough by about .15 mph.  CRAP! :x

We had supper with a bunch of the others at the Nugget's restaurant just off the atrium -- and the sound of the rain on the glass roof was really loud.  But maybe it wasn't rain -- but no, it must have been, 'cause within a few minutes we had to change to a different table because of all the water that was dripping on us.  And after the meal - which was the most unworldly event in which we've participated in Wendover in all of the meals taken here in the past decade (see me privately for a detailed explanation) - we got to the parking lot and there were puddles and the truck was rinsed pretty well and so on.  The lightning was flashing and the rain kept on sprinkling -- --

And, in other words, folks -- if there's racing tomorrow we'll be pleased.  I don't know if it rained on the salt -- it was way too late to go out there for an inspection -- but assuming it did rain some -- we might not be able to race in the morning.  Stay tuned and hope for the dry, hey?

Unfortunately, no record for the Fast Four Special this year.  We frantically pulled the head in impound only to find the block was too far gone to make the back up run.  While we're bummed, gaining 11+ MPH in one year ain't too shabby.  Considering V4F roadster records were under 100 MPH just four years ago, needless to say, we're pretty pleased with a 140+ down run.  Now, if we can just keep the darn deck on the block!  We have some creative ideas for next year and are already looking forward to Speedweek 2012.

Thanks to everyone for your support!

As has been mentioned, WoS is over.  It's a bit wet out here.  I'm in the pits, preparing to hook the trailer with the Monte Carlo so I can drag it back home.

Weather forecast for the Shootout:  http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=wendover%2C+ut&MR=1

It's 61F now and he forecast thru Wednesday is for highs near 80 with zero chance of precip.  I'd guess that the standing water is gonna evaporate/dissipate into the salt pretty quickly.  I'm not a professional weather guesser (meteorologist) but based on past experience, it looks like we're gonna have good weather for the Shootout.

Speaking of which, I'm gonna drag my car home, then turn around and come back to cover the FIA schmooze and booze get-together on Sunday and be ready to cover the record attempts on Monday ayem.

In the mean time here are some photos from this morning:

The Vesco team fording the lake at Land's End.

A view of the salt from about halfway between Land's End and the pits.

The exhaust on my Monte Carlo.  I don't think it's gonna buff out.

The underside of the car with an arrow pointing to one of the holes punched thru the floor pan.  I hadn't considered this before, but that hole is right about where the driver's seat bolts in.  I guess I otta thank God pretty profusely for the fact that the driveshaft didn't try to jump into my lap...from the back side.  One other thing visible is the slip joint that's still in the transmission tailshaft.  It snapped off pretty cleanly there.  Makes me wonder about what kinda shape the transmission's in.  Just another excuse to pitch the TH200-4R and install a Tremec 3550 or a T-56 six-speed.

I'll make one last post on this thread - and start the new Shootout 2011 thread later on, even though some of these are pertinent to that.  Got it straight now?

First of all, a funky picture taken last night at the Nugget's "Golden Harvest" restaurant.  We had a weird meal/weird service event, but Bill Warner's comp. ice cream sundae sorta made up for some of the weirditude:

Here are three shots of what was the registration and pit "village".  We took these a few hours ago.  The water is going away quickly - but not quick enough to race today  -- there's no question that the meet was properly declared ended.

Here are a pair of shots of the international/Shootout course at about the two mile line from the freeway end.  I make that distinction because, since the course is a two-way course, there's a set of markers counting up from each end.

And finally, a couple of pictures of the engine bay on your regular ol' average hot rod. . .:

That's it for me for now.  Oh, no it isn't -- Ray asked me to let him know about the FIA/FIM social meeting thing tomorrow night.  First of all, it is, unfortunately, by invitation only.  The Shootout drivers meeting is at 3 Sunday afternoon at the freeway end/pits of the Cook course.  FIA will be having its annual board meeting in Wendover this weekend -- and they're hosting a social event at the Montego starting at 6 tomorrow (Sunday) evening.  Ray and Nancy and I will try to get some photos for you all, if nothing else.

Well, it's 4 pm and I'm still at the truck stop.  Tony Johnson, the owner/driver of the other black Monte Carlo ended up here with a blown motor.

He's gone to Tooele to rent a truck and trailer to get his car back to Wisconsin.

The last photo is of my serp belt/fan clutch pulley (no fan clutch, since I run an electric fan) with 2 sheared studs.  There's enough of 'em left that I think I can make it home ok.  Jim's gone to deliver some stuff to Don Cyr who blew a headgasket in his 55 Ford...he's staying for the Shootout, so he's replacing the gasket in the motel parking lot.

I'll fix the water pump/pulley studs in the ayem.  I'm home, kept the shiny side up and didn't break anything else along the way (minor miracle.)

I'm considering a Buick GN 8.5" rear end.  They have a better stock ratio (3.42 vs the Monte's 3.73) and are a h*ll of a lot stronger.  That's where the break started.  I just don't have a photo of it yet.

But first, I'm gonna get some laundry into the washer, then sleep....well, maybe I'll do a coupla other things while the wash is doing its thing.

Sorry to hear about your calamity, but it has given me pause for thought.  Even with a loop, that's a lot of damage.

The one component in my drive train I hadn't even given a thought to was the driveshaft.

I'm running 4.22's, and I'd hate to see what might happen if it were to cut loose at 7G.

It'll be going in for a balance job, at a minimum.

That caught my eye too, due to where/how it broke the loop did not do a lot of good. Might be good practice to have a second loop a bit farther back from the tail shaft of the tranny.

I have used Dynotech drive shafts without any issues on many of the race cars I have worked on.  They are the only ones that I have found that can keep to my specifications and tolerances and tightly hold drive shaft runout.  http://www.dynotecheng.com  Very few shops will balance drive shafts properly for race cars. Just ask them how tightly they hold the balance specifications or what the runout of the shaft is, and you will have the answer to do business with them or not.  Speed is all about maximizing all the parts of the race car.    The Salt Cat Team would really like to thank Stainless and Speed Limit 1000 for their help in Impound. They loaned us their spare fire bottle after I touched the one in the engine compartment off after smoke started to fill the cockpit at the end of our 216 MPH run. Turned out to be cooling water that escaped after we killed the now infamous "Henry" 16 port head. Couldn't back up the record, but had to be satisfied with 1 1/2 records, and a red hat. All in all a great meet and a great time. We'll be back for World Finals after we repair the damage. Once again "Thanks" guys, your help was much appreciated.

Thanks for the good words, Cap'n.  They're very much appreciated.

I've been thinkin about this driveshaft deal and while the loop did what it was intended to do, it didn't minimize the carnage much.  I knew that the driveshaft speed might be an issue cuz I have a 0.666 overdrive in the transmission which brought up the speed of the tailshaft, driveshaft and pinion.  I was more worried about it at higher speeds (near 200 mph would have had the shaft spinning near 10,000 RPM) but it seems that even 6000 RPM shaft speed was sufficient to create significant havoc.  I spose if the shaft had dropped the nose, punched thru the floor pan or tunnel and tried to jump inside with me, it would have been a whole lot more exciting...and I had plenty of excitement at it was...  So, Bill Ward and I discussed using a 58-74 Chevy truck 2-piece driveshaft (or any other shaft with a center support bearing) with an additional crossmember where the center support bearing is located.  Denny's (the manufacturer of the twisted soda straw that's stowed in the back of the Monte Carlo) sells 'em...but they sure ain't cheap: $700-$1000.  I think I'll send 'em a picture of mine with their logo prominently displayed and see if they wanna discuss replacement.  See the attached photo.

The other thing I've been thinking about is a rear driveshaft loop.  Some thought would have to go into it regarding rear axle movement, but it could still be done...and might not be a bad idea.

Finally, I'll be heading back to the salt this afternoon.  I'll have something on the FIA meeting booze 'n schmooze later tonite.

Ray,
In my opinion the addition of a rear hoop is a good idea and not uncommon.
The rear hoop just needs to be oval shaped to accommodate differential travel.
I do not care for two piece drive lines unless the legnth of the wheel base makes them necessary.
They add more parts that could fail and two drive shafts that should have hoops.

Just my 2 cents, Don
Title: Re: On the scene at World of Speed 2011
Post by: Peter Jack on September 18, 2011, 02:05:44 PM
Ray, in other forms of motorsport the two hoop system is quite common and it works, but only to help minimize the damage. Those pesky little critters are pretty lively when they start to get free.

I don't like two piece driveshafts because there's a lot more to go wrong, they require more hoops, and their reliability record is much poorer than a single length. The way to solve the problem is to use good, heavy duty parts and a larger diameter tube with a first rate balance job. The larger diameter is way stronger. Serious road race and oval cars use a minimum of 3" and some serious competition trucks go up to 5" or more. The straightness and balance are very important.

Try Googleing "racing drive shaft" and you'll find lots of qualified suppliers for both the heavy duty parts and the shafts themselves.

Pete

I've got to agree with the concensus - a 2 piece mandates a carrier bearing, another set of splines, and the need to balance both driveshafts, and to do it right, both together.

The drive shaft in a Monte isn't so long as to have to go that way - lots of examples of that basic drivetrain running really fast in NASCAR, NHRA, Sportsman class.

I suspect that it was just your turn to have one break.

But I'd still try to shove it up Denny's deuterostome blastopore.

In the foregoing discussion of driveshafts, balance and runout seem to be the only factors addressed, and while having good balance and minimal runout are good things, there is a more important criterion to be evaluated, and that is the “critical speed” of the shaft.  The critical speed of a rotating shaft is that speed at which it becomes unstable and prone to lateral buckling.  This is analogous to the buckling of a long, slender column under compressive load.

One would want to assure that the calculated critical speed of a shaft is well in excess of the expected operating range.  If a driveshaft supplier declines to quote the critical speed or, perhaps, their rated speed, you should look for a different supplier or otherwise satisfy yourself that the design is appropriate in regard to this criterion.

I.O.

I tested that theory in August. I turned a stock shaft past critical RPM. It started to wobble and broke at 191 mph. My Race Pak said it was turning 4100 RPMs just before it broke. At 47 inches it was way too long and turning too fast. Replaced it with a 3" heavier wall.

Land's End Lynda and photographer Chris Hartwell, the chap who took the original photo of the Vesco 444 that was later enlarged and hangs above the cash register at the Salt Flats Cafe.

The Higgins-Waters Team, two Aussie crop farmers and one Yank retired fireman.

Vesco pit.

Greg Watters at the starting line.

Cohns.  The radio announcer giving background info said there is no crew chief, they all give each other orders.

You know the next one.

At least I found my phone..

Everybody stop worrying,  :| after racing was done for the day I went out to the 6.5, found my tracks and walked from the return road to about 50 ft off the track, where the go pro was found.... we couldn't get the video to play so we are leaving that to the experts.  For everyone's info, 1/2 of the mount was attached to the camera, the other half still on the car, we will send that back for warranty.  If the video comes out it will be posted.
We had a great time, the little car (Bockscar) went a bit over 245, too bad the motor didn't have 2 more miles in it, #4 roasted a valve and displaced a lot of aluminum around the valve seat, the valve turned sideways and smacked the piston about 6 times, burned the head gasket between 3 & 4.  All the other holes looked normal.  My guess in maybe an injector issue, data showed everything was working normally.   It served us well this year, put Corey Goodson in the club at speedweek, made him the fastest guy in the car with a 236 best mile and a 239.5 exit, then allowed me to reclaim the fastest honor... although Corey's new record is faster than mine.

Probably moving to a smaller motor next year, 45 or 60 ci... lost those over the last couple of years, we will see.
Thanks to all the USFRA volunteers for a great meet

See ya on the salt  8-)... in a week, gotta get back to work on the big car.

LOL!  I've decided (for the moment) to stick with a 1-piece driveshaft.  I've talked to Denny at Denny's (huh?) and I'll send him my pretzel-like driveshaft, broken pinion yoke and slip joint.  Then we'll see what we can do about it.  At least I've got a little while to work on it.
