Title: On the Scene at SpeedWeek 2011
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on August 11, 2011, 08:22:39 PM
Ray and I decided that we should have a separate thread for the photos and other stuff that we'll offer to you folks from SpeedWeek this year -- so here it is.  We saw Ray (the Rat) at Land's End an hour ago and he was off, in the Burb, as he calls his pristine (?!) Suburban to start documenting this event.  I'll get some photos, too, and sooner or later all of you folks will have things you want to post - or request.

So -- use this thread to see what's going on and ask what you need to ask.  Have fun, folks -- it's already starting out here.

Pristine, my sainted aunt!  It's a semi-clean one (or two or...) owner that was only driven to church by a little...well, never mind.  It gets me here and there.

Yep.  I'm here.  It's a good place to be.  Right now I'm parked at the Bend in the Road...but on the other side if the Bend...Ya can't miss the Honey Buckets (Port-a-Potties.)  I'm online using my Android phone as a tethered cellular modem.  It sure ain't fiber optic speed.

First to clarify things.  Here's where ya can't camp.

The one hour parking is only for the gravel area.  I guess the No Fireworks is the same,  but I'd need further clarification on that.

Then there's some of the Land's End gang.

Next post will be where ya CAN camp.

Here are some of the places you CAN camp:

The flats at the Bend (looking north)

The flats east of the Bend

and another shot of the flats looking south.

You can also camp on the west side if the road, across from the flats and up the hill on Jack Rabbit Flats where those folks who like peace and quiet stay.

I plan to park in the gravel area for 59 minutes to THANK everyone that sent best wishes and prayers

for Doris:

It seems that the late night excursion to the hospital and the meds that were prescribed as a result have turned things in Doris' favor.

We went back to the primary care physician a few minutes ago and she has shown an adequate recovery.

WENDOVER.......here I come.

I'll be at Motel 6 by 1:30 PM Utah time.

THANKS for the calls and prayers.

Putting myself in Bret Kepner's hands is because he is bigger than most people that give me doo doo.

Besides he can shout louder than any officials.

I'm very secure with his guidance since he cared for Treit and I for 4 days in Detroit in the middle of the winter.

He knew where to eat, where to stay, where to turn and who to talk to.

Bless his years of traveling everywhere that some sort of racing happened.

Beside that, he seldom talks to my wife and that keeps her from hearing his fabricated descriptions of

the time we spend together.

Can anybody that is there give an intelligent report about the "Code 3" situation with Ambulance, Fire truck, and Sheriff; about 0930 this AM?

No rumors, please. Just the facts, Ma'am.

Thanks.

No news yet, but here's a photo of an ambulance blowing past Land's End (Lynda and her crew did a stellar job of controlling traffic).

I'll find out what I can as I start making my rounds thru the pits.  I just talked to SSS and he doesn't know what went down, either.

I just made a quick trip to town for a few errands -- and shot these of cars (well, and a farm tractor) at the Stateline/Nugget -- for the informal show over the next few evenings.

Got to go out and plow the back 40?  Do it with a Ford 8N tractor -- and a flathead???

More later, boys and girls.  The cars and other stuff are already lining up at the Nugget -- see you there later, hey?

A bit of an update on the Code 3 incident:  I've heard from 2 sources that it was an MI (heart attack) and I'll wait until I know more before saying any more about the person or status...mainly cuz all I know has come from 2nd or 3rd hand statements.  I can say that it was something very sudden, unexpected (of course) but not related to any competition activities.

And it wouldn't be a salt flats experience without some sort of computer/connectivity problem.  I've had to switch from Firefox to Google Chrome as my browser for some unknown reason.

Now.  Here are some photos from the tech waiting line:

Great pics, Ray and Slim! It's the next best thing to being there.

I keep promising myself a trip to Speed Week but it's a long way from the UK and to be honest, one of the main things keeping me away is the prospect of travelling so far only to find all the hotel rooms taken and booked a year in advance. Any advice on that score would be very welcome!

Looking forward to listening in on "Speed Week Radio"!

From one end of the spectrum to the other.  George Poteet in the Speed Demon, Danny Burrow and the Blowfish and the Silacci & Best Honda 600.

Title: Re: On the Scene at SpeedWeek 2011
Post by: RayTheRat on August 12, 2011, 07:10:30 PM
A quick addendum to my last post.  George Poteet has (at least) 3 goals: the C/BGS record, the overall streamliner record (they're running a 347" motor this year) and the Hot Rod trophy for the 3rd year in a row.

Danny Burrow, Troy Trepanier and George's Cameltoe Racing Blowfish are shooting to become the 4th (or maybe 5th) "car" with a speed over 300 mph.  The record in B/BFCC is 294, set by Tom Burkland in 1985...in the Datsun B210 (that looked NOTHING like a Datsun when they got thru with it.)  The speed they are looking for is north of 308.

One quick photo and an update.  The photo was inspired by Freud's shot of the Pierson coupe shot years ago.  His was much better than this, but I'll take what I can get.

Note from Land's End Lynda:  The Red Garter has at least 15 rooms availabe every night.  There's no minumum stay and the price (may vary depending on the room) is $131/night thru Monday nite, then drops to the regular rate.  Now ya know.

A sad note to close on.  The Code 3 incident this morning was a fatal.  Massive heart attack and was gone immediately...no suffering.

I hope I don't have to report anything more like this.

Here's the photo and one that Peter Vincent has rights to but allowed me to post here.  The roadster is the one Peter has rights to, the sedan is "mine" more or less.  :)

That is absolutely calender and poster quality type work.
Just keep it up;  Willie Nelson was once quoted as saying: "This beat-up old guitar is going to take me around the world."

Ray, Ray, if you think you can take cool photos using the moon and a great car -- what do you think of this one?

How 'bout this?

Or maybe this?

I didn't think much about the fact that we had a nice moon rising 'til Nancy mentioned it as we were leaving the salt after our evening of pit-closing duties.  We were within a mile or so of Land's End when we (okay, when I) decided to turn around and drive all the way back to the SSS pit for these photos.  Not the greatest subject, maybe, but a good moonrise is only available to us once in a long while out here -- so we did return to the pit and did take some photos.  Whether or not they're calendar (note the correct spelling, Jim) -- you've gotta try to grab the opportunity and go with it.

Thanks to all, and to all a good night.

We're under way!  First of all, though, some shots from the drivers meeting, including Glen Barrett being awarded the Bob Higbee award for volunteers.  Congratulations, Glen -- from Nancy and me and all of us here on landracing.com.

Gotta interrupt myself -- the Poteet & Main Speed Demon is about to leave the line -- running on a 366.043 record in C./BGS.  I'll post speeds and then get back to the photos.  Non I won't -- he went past here shooting ducks-- maybe 200, maybe not even that.

Okay -- the meeting.

Enough for now -- but we'll be back.  By the way, nobody has qualified yet.  But - it's about 15 minutes into the firs day of a seven day meet.  Stay tuned.

George Poteet just put the Blowfish into impound with a 300 run -- on an old Tom Burkland 294 record.  Exit speed was 303.  Fastest run of the meet so far -- but heck, we've been running for all of what, a half-hour?

Spirit of Rett is there, but I didn't get a speed.  Had to be fast, tho...he's running in A/BGS with a 350 record.

There's a NICE lookin Production Pickup...

...a Harley sidecar

and a Yamaha 350 with a turbo on it that was supposedly gonna grenade the motor on the first pass...or so the owner told me...and I said I'd much rather get a photo in impound.  And here it is.

We're through tech with Nancy's bike, and now I've got a few minutes before I go hit the pool.

So -- how's the waiting with the biggest-ever pre-registration?  Unh, about 1.45 this afternoon -- we'd been running for around two and a half hours and have the biggest pre-registration ever (note I stress that fact?) -- after two and a half hours on the first day -- I heard the announcement "No waiting to run on #2 course".  It's a combination - long-short course -- and NO FRICKIN' WAITING TWO HOURS INTO THE MEET!!!!

Is the new four-course setup working or what?

Don Jackson, who's Salt27 on this Forum, is in impound at about 112, I think it was.  It's an old Yammy 2-stroke that was just short of seizing, he said -- but he's in impound.  I remember seeing the trailer for one of the 750cc Moto Guzzi scoots -- Team Subtle Crowbar.  I don't know the speed.  If there were other bikes I missed 'em -- was concentrating on getting Nancy's ZX15P through tech -- which we did.

Ryan Osti is through, too, and so is the Big Blue #991 ZX14 from Texas.  Those were the bikes in line around us -- but I don't know who else is teched but not running.  I'll get some more information, no doubt, by reading the posts from RtRat.

Ha.  Here is a picture of the SSS pits I'll always remember . . .

Unh, let's see -- World of Speed, for sure, 'cause I recognize Lawson's SuperCoupe trailer behind us at the September meet - unh, mmm, '06?  I know it was the '04 pickup -- and I think '06 was about the last year we had that trailer.  Maybe '07. . .

Nancy and a few of the kids and I went to the Nugget tonight to see and be seen.  I caution you that these photos are candids shot in less-than studio lighting -- but I hope they let you see some of the fun stuff we saw.

George Poteet in the 715 C/BFS just ran 376 middle mile -- which qualified him.  But no, he didn't lift -- last mile was 408.460 and exit speed 421.009.

Dang, wait'll they step up the tuneup!  Congratulations.  I'll post and add some more.

This morning Lelie Porterfield bumped the 1000 P/P bike record to about 197 and Kathy Butler bumped it a bit, too.  And Andy Sills is here to work on it as well.  Competition in the liter bike class!.

Sheri Buchta just ran -- about 2 mph off the 125 or so she needed.

Don Jackson backed up his record on the 350 Turbo Yamaha -- didn't have the final number, but he thinks it'll be in the low 100 range.  Open record -- but he's a rookie this year (having spectated with son Gus for a long time) - so he doesn't realize what a great thing it is to get a record at Bville -- whether open or soft or whatever.  Congratulations.

If SCTA has been having the same connectivity problems that I have, I don't blame 'em for not having results. I've been fighting all day with my Android phone, trying to get connected.  The Tech Support people told me that my SIM card had died.  But as soon as 5:00 rolled around, things came to life.  Sounds like an overloaded tower/server to me.

For many years SCTA-BNI has had their results and pictures pages up before the start of Speedweek and started posting pictures during prep and throughout the event along the results every night.  So there must be an issue with not having someone to do it or some other problem.  Oh well even though I am not racing this year I plan to be out there on Tuesday.

Thye reports of my demise are somewhat premature.  I reported the fatality on Friday.  I don't know the other Ray's last name, but He was the dude who had the huge scaffolding and did the videos of the racing.  May he rest in peace.

Here's a shot from land's end (in sepia tone) and there's only 100 linear feet or so of  water to cross.

I'm on my way.

Title: Re: On the Scene at SpeedWeek 2011
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on August 15, 2011, 09:47:00 AM
I'm still in the room -- but reading that the water is only near Land's End is good.  I got reports of one (only one) tipped Porta Potty, out by one of the timing towers -- but that's the extent of the damages.  But at the Bend in the Road -- whooo, boy, did we have a storm to mess up Salt Talks.  The wind starting kicking up seriously about 7.30, and at about 7.45 I announced we'd start the drawings and giveaways early because the weather appeared to be getting too bad for us.  At 8 we felt a few raindrops -- and by 8.15 is was raining to beat the band and we had to quit.  We stayed and about a half-hour later the storm was done -- but the ground had turned to sticky goo.  It was great if you wanted to be taller than you used to be -- just walk around and the mud'd cling to your shoes/feet and sure enough, a half-inch taller every few steps.

So we put stuff away into the trailer, put the pickup into four-wheel-drive and still slid and greased to get out.  The trailer is still there -- hope it's moveable today.

We didn't give away many of the prizes at all -- will draw a bunch of ticket numbers today and have the winners get the goodies when they isit our pit -- or something like that.  We've got lots of food left -- I guess the local food bank will be the big winner for the 2011 Salt Talks picnic.

It's about 7.45 Monday morning and I'll hang up, get things put together and head for the salt.  By the way -- I'll be getting daily reports on the records and qualifiers from Dan Warner, I suspect, and once I have that I'll post it.  He hasn't yet had enough time in his busy day to find me.  Things'll start mellowing out and we'll do what we can to let you all know what's what.

Speed demon ran a few minutes ago and lost electrical power at the 1/4.  It came back on, but George turned out.  Blowfish broke a transmission, so didn't make a return run.  Spectre with Kenny Hoover driving broke somethin relatively minor last nite in one of the last runs on the cours but has it fixed and is buttoning it back uo to head for the starting line.  I think the 6969 Barracuda was able to back up their record this morning, but the radio was garbled...he ran over 240, tho.

More later.

The reports of my demise are somewhat premature.  I reported the fatality on Friday.  I don't know the other Ray's last name, but He was the dude who had the huge scaffolding and did the videos of the racing.  May he rest in peace.

Oh no! The other Ray was a really nice guy, that's so sad.  :-(
We think he may be the one that captured the notorious video of McVicar's fastest man without a bike video.

Glad you are still with us RTR and thanks for the reporting & pics!

Well, one thing for sure.  According to all who attended Ray after the MI said that he was probably dead before he hit the ground.  It was very quick, no suffering, probably very little pain..or at least for a very short time.  I hope that I go that way.

Ray,

Great job keeping all of us informed on what's happening out at the great white dyno!!  Unfortunatly, we had to head home Sunday, but on the plus side, the storm last night helped clean most of the salt off the truck and trailer.

I will be keeping up on all the happenings for the remainder of the week, right here!!

So again, thank you for all your efforts!!

photos are up at www.thanks2frank.com.

Speed Demon just made a nice run --
416.539 fifth mile, 426.910 exit speed   Whoooo-Hooo!!

By the way, the website worked for me each time I tried it today -- but there've been hour-long stretches when i wasn't near the machine.  Sorry for any interruptions -- but keep sending notes to me when you have problems with it and I'll try to stay up to date.

A coupla quick updates.  The 911 Cummins-Beck-Davidson-Thornberry roadster came up a bit short on its qualifier...ran about 294.  George Poteet just ran again and turned 416 in the final mile and 421 out the back.

More photos in a minute...I had to switch cameras.

In the program, the Speed Demon is listed as a C/BS...on gas.  But I think a class record is immaterial to 'em.  They want the top speed of the meet and the overall speed record, even if they can't get an FIA record at this meet.  They (Poteet & Main) have their names on the last 2 entries on the Hot Rod Trophy and REALLY want 3 in a row.

Here are some more starting line photos.

Way to go Speed Demon!
On a different note, we have a good friend, Bill Service, that has had a tough, tough year. He has spent most of the past year in and out of rehab and the hospital getting an artificial hip taken out. He sat in a wheelchair, without a hip, for months, waiting for the infection to clear up. The new artificial hip is in but he's still in a wheelchair waiting for it to heal. Motivation to race got him through much of the tough time and he is on the salt this year, in his wheelchair, with a friend doing the driving! The driver is licensing up and just completed his second run, the fastest run ever. 172 and change. It was a little lean, they richened it up and are back in line. Bill has always said his car is not competitive in it's class so each speed increase meets personal goals just fine.  Car #4010 1949 Plymouth 3-win coupe.

Unable to describe:

Lynda's hug at Lands End when I arrived.

Pristine whiteness of the salt.

How humbling a sunrise can be.

The incredible closeness of this LSR family including our guests from NZ and Australia.

Why grown men cry as they embrace a friend or get a Red Hat.

This makes many of my experiences this year off limits but I will try.

The members of the Kilo Klub were as expected.. Kepner had already purchased his years supply of T shirts and programs. The

E-Z ups were in place and Cherie Howard had her timing slip printer ready for action.Tom and Andy Schlitz were settled in.

Got Salt, the Langlos and both Amos......Stainless and Go Nutzkie on board.  Life is good.   Slim and Nancy and the lady with

a heart as large anything, Sherie Buchta. Meeting her was a pure joy. Now I can understand why Willie hung on so long. He

didn't want to leave her.

More people.......Dr Goggles, Joe Timney, the Turks, Pork Pie and good old Lars.  It's now an international family and any time we can share

time together is precious.

Salt Talks took a bad weather hit. Black clouds, lightening, wind, dust blowing and then the rain. I've always wondered how the residents of

Bend in the Road would survive a rain storm. We now know. It's bad but they survive.

I must THANK each person that came to me and inquired about Doris. Most of the time I couldn't answer them with my most sincere

appreciation. I walked away from some of them with their shoulder spotted with my tears. It shows two things about this group of people.

They read this site and have developed a warmth and compassion for their friends that may exceed the relationship within their own

family. I was the recipient of that feeling that has to be experienced to be able to understand it.

When I am back home I'll try to explain that love to Doris.  Thanks to ALL OF YOU.

FREUD

I haven't seen the #33 Maro liner run since Saturday.

I've just had my own little bit of fun.  I got busy with everything and let the inverters draw the battery in the Burb down...that was after fixing a water leak earlier in the day.

Lucky I had something I was gonna experiment with.

A 45w solar power supply that brought the battery from 11.1v to 12.1v and I was able to get the thing started.  I think I'm thru for the day.

Ray,  I want to get a solar charging set-up for our High School team - what exactly do you have and where can I get it?  let me know when you have time.  Really enjoy this thread, thank you.

Harbor Freight.  "Regular price", $300.  "Usual Price", $200.  With a coupon, $150.  Both Texican and I have one.

As far as I know, it's the only 45 watt unit they sell.

The black Gus Gus liner in the pix with the heat distortion - how are they doing?  They certainly are living their dream.

Sorry, don't know.  Haven't seen 'em to talk to.

Ray, have you caught a pic of Stan Johnson's '27?  He and Curt and the crew are supposed to be out there.  I think it's # 339, and a beautiful car, at that.

On, Wisconsin!

I'll check to see if I have anything with it in.

In re: Harbor Freight's 45 watt solar unit -- Don Pearsall and I also have them.  I bought mine for about $150 including shipping - by ordering it on the 4th of July.  They had a 25% discount on anything that date.  I'm using just one panel (15 watt/panel, three in the kit) to keep the battery up in the trailer/pit - might put two of 'em in service today, just to see what happens.  I've got the rack (supplied, but pretty cheesy) mounted on the roof of the trailer.  The controller and mount and panels come ingeniously well packed in a box, by the way - good example of cramming stuff -- sorta like Ikea, I hear.

Speaking of the solar panel units, I wrote up a 'build' article on how to install them on my trailer. It is at http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php/topic,10171.0.html (http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php/topic,10171.0.html). So far so good. It is keeping my big battery charged and I have trailer lights and AC power.

Quick update:  Both the Speed Demon and Spirit of Rett ran a few minutes ago.  Demon was a turnout (one of the crew members told me, "we really need this run"...didn't get it) and Nearburg in Rett ran around 370 to back up his class record (old record in A/GS was 350.)

More as I get it.

The 428 Chauvin Emmons car ran this morning, trying to back up yesterday's 325 (on a 280 record).  The speed in the last mile wads 311 -- with a BIG ball of fire following the car.  They'll get the record - but here are some shots of the fun Dan will have tio deal with when measuring the motor:

Here are shots of the cars in impound getting their engines measured, including a few of the Blowfish that just barely cracked 300, running poorly -- but still good enough.  I don't have all of the speeds - will keep trying.  But for now - enjoy the photos.

Bill Ross just called. He's running a 1987 Moto Guzzi, 5154B. On the first run Sat am he qualified and backed it up for a record of 169.770. He changed classes on Sunday and went out again, threw a rod. Damaged a piston, cam, bent valve, shrapnel in the motor etc. To top it off, the storm blew in later and took down their tents and left 4-5" of mud on the top of most everything in their campsite. Time to go home....until he made a call and recieved an offer of a new valve shipped overnite to Wendover. He had most of the other parts with him. They are currently waiting for the package to arrive.
Other news...he said it was breezy today (about an hour ago) with an 8-9 mph crosswind.
Bill Serivce, running the black '49 Plymouth said it was not pulling high gear so they were going back out and try giving a 100 shot of nitrous at the right time and pick up the speed. (fastest has been 171mph)
Kent and Randy arrived on the salt and Kent made a shakedown pass on the electric bike...real nice run. He will be back out later today.
Bill Anderson, Screwball racing, 7919B, just made a pass and Bill Ross thought it sounded real good but didn't catch the speed. He's heading over to see who's in impound and will give a call later. Mud, rods and shrapnel...sounds like fun and that's the truth to all of us sitting at home.

Daurenheim and Biglow lakester about to run (hope I didn't do too bad with my spelling).  They're running on a Tanis Hammond 314 record.  I'll get the speeds for you.  The car runs a 582 cu.in Chevy and the body is very similar to the Speed Demon's shape.

Quarter mile speed:  258   mile 3  256  4 mile 291  5 mile 302.301    Not enough to qualify, but 302 ain't chump change.  Good run for this new car.

Back home as well, wondering how the 142 crew is doing...D/BSTR in impound 3 times in 3 days! They've got the speed but are having some other issues. Getting a close up view of the GUS GUS car was a real treat as well...I had asked one of the SCTA inspectors if they'd be able to run, after taking his hat off, he said that the car was a little further in technology than what they were used to seeing and that they'd get out for some runs.
Beautiful cars and other than the storm that came in Sunday night the weather was real nice. Already can't wait for September!

John, SSS can prolly tell ya better than I about the bikes.  I'll leave it in his lap.  Unfortunately, I can't provide any info about the 146 car...but I'll keep my eyes and ears open the next time I'm in the pits or Impound.

Right now (2:30 MDT) I'm between the course 1 and 2 starting lines and I have my solar charger hooked up to prevent a rerun of yesterday's unpleasantness.  But setting it up in the hot sun (even with a hat, shades and gloves)...plus listening to the goofy music from the ice cream truck for the last 30 minutes has me a little goofier than usual.  So I'm gonna post some (sorta) goofy photos (or captions:

Danny Burrow after getting the Blowfish certified for the 307.339 record: "Hurry and take the picture!  I've been in this suit since 7:30 and I'm about to melt!"

"Hey!  You with the hat!  Yeah, You!  Find us some shade!  It's HOT out here!

"Vroom, vroom!"

George Poteet's sister (Betty, a true southern belle) asked me to get photos of George smiling.  Harder than h*ll.  Yesterday when I saw him talking with someone in impound, he seemed to be in a pretty good mood and was smiling and laughing.  So I raised the camera, hit the shutter release...and the camera died.  I told Betty that it was impossible to get a shot of him smiling cuz when I did, it broke the camera.  I told George the story today and got a pretty good laugh and smile from him.  Besides...the camera just chose that moment to run outta battery.  :)

I just posted a video of Blowfish being pushed off the start line on Sunday:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONxI1Hs8oQY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONxI1Hs8oQY)
Please correct me if I'm wrong on the speed. If you go full screen you can watch it in HD. Unfortunately my video skills aren't that good but for those that couldn't make it to SW maybe it's better than nothing, lol. The last 30 seconds are pretty cool. I'll post some video from the mud mess at the bend in the road later on. My kids were in heaven and it also brought out the kid in a few others benders. This is our 5th year going as a family and we look forward to the event and the good people every year.

I forgot to mention the Blowfish Cuda just happens to be one of my favorite cars out there. Watching Speed Demon go 426 around the 5 mile was pretty cool as well!

I just wanted to thank everyony again, especially Ray and Slim, for all the updates and pictures! It is extremely appreciated and there is no better way to keep up with the meet since I was unable to make it this year. I was really excited to see the chassis engineering streamliner back on the salt. Does anyone have any info on it? I was hoping to see it again last year I had heard the rumor that they were putting a 2nd diesel in it but never knew for sure. Does any body know what it ran? It was not posted on SCTA's site yet.

Also I just wanted to mention how sad it was to hear about Ray. My brother and I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple times and he was nice enough to take some great elevated pictures for me. My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.

In re:  The diesel Chassis Engr. car.  Nancy was in line about ten or fifteen back from the diesel 'liner so we didn't see it very wel, although the smoke and ramping sound of the motor idling/warming is hard to miss.  I think I heard ron Christensen, the radio AM 1610 announcer, talking about the car and the two motors in it.  So there's one response to the question.  I THINK it's got two now.  And then it left the line -- and I got called away for a minute or two (to move us up in the line).  When I noticed a hold was in progress -- I heard that "the yellow car" had spun.  Well, it might have been the diesel - the timing would have been about right.  So - no speeds to report, partly because maybe it spun, and mostly 'cause we (Nancy and I) were getting Nancy dressed (dang, the chores I have to live with  :-D :-D :-D) and didn't pay attention to the radio at the proper moment.

Oh, yeah -- Nancy did make a run.  It being her first run in nearly a year she was planning on a "granny" pass down the course -- 'specially since by that time - late Tuesday afternoon - we heard the course was getting pretty tired.  She discovered that it's tired, alright, spinning up and having to pedal it here and there through the four -- and then she says it was sorta like driving on Crisco from the 4 to the 5.  So she didn't do much more than a 165 or so in the fastest mile - the middle one.  No big deal -- three more days in this meet and two more meets out here this year, so why not just have fun instead of trying too hard and hurting something - or someone?

That's it for now.  Tomorrow is Wednesday and that's the evening when the 200 MPH Club banquet is, and then Thursday night is the Community banquet for the volunteers (well, banquet isn't the right word -- it's burgers and potato salad and is really a kick 'cause it's so light-hearted), and Friday is the last night of the meet.  Ray and I will keep posting what we can and trying to help those of you not out here - to live the event vicariously through our observations.  Okay?

A note on the fireworks. We had none but got hasseled by one older BLM Ranger on Sat. night. He came rolling into two of our camps accusing us of shooting fireworks with his chest all puffed out. He then told one of the ADULTS in our group standing around the campfire that he should not be drinking out there. The younger rangers with him rolled their eyes behind his back at this point

They were also parked in the scrub to the west in a perimeter on Friday night waiting for the hooliganism.

For the record, the younger Rangers were cool, the night before one of the same guys stopped and checked on a kid in a wheelchair aand gave him a souvineer badge, very nice gesture.

A coupla notes from return runs.  Speed Demon shut off again in the 4th mile.  Another qualifier blown.  I dunno how many passes that motor has left in it.

The Mariani Farms liner sounded real good, but I didn't hear whether the record was backed up or not.

And then the Liberty Garage lakester (DOHC, 5 main bearing Model B motor) mighta got hooked by its push car and looped a it.  The # 125 Comp Coupe spun off the line, but I difn't get a photo of it.

I guess you could get out and run along side and offer tuning and riding tips.

Wasn't there talk of a rule that you had to go at least the posted limit on the road to lands end?  Hope they get it all sorted out. Tony

I'm certainly not a motorcycle parliamentarian -- but -- I thought the rule was to run a "motorcycle" engine in all but the Omega (or maybe U and Streamliner) class.  I would think this entry was misclassified in 350/A-PBG (?).

I talked to the Pinto crew breifly on Sunday.
2 liter Pinto motor with 1.6 liter euro Pinto head.
The ports are higher and it is ported.
If your a 2 liter freak you know the 2 liter head with a lot of custom porting is still
not the best for making HP.

Thanks to all who have provided info so far.  I am sure all of us at work or at home staring at a screen are much appreciative.  While I wait (usually impatiently), I have created a spreadsheet that I dump the run logs into.  For any who are interested, I attached an xls of runs through Monday.

This is fantastic, thanks!

Reference the Pinto motor, in mainland Europe they did a 1300cc version, maybe better still for porting for max HP. Did have one for a while and considered Drag racing it, in the end a Rally Car team offered too much money to refuse.

Thanks for all the pics and info.

Some news from impound.
Bill Ross, Moto Guzi 5154B, threw a rod Monday, rebuilt on the salt and went out and qualified this morning @ 159.8mph.
Next to him in impound: The Lightening electric bike, he thinks they ran 217mph.
Jay Allen, Broken Spoke racing qualified on his 3000cc HD @ 185.117 on a 182.? record. I think it's MPS-PG
Vance and Forstall #473 in impound,
Sidecar bike #1448 SC-F in impound
#7608 A-G is in impound.
Bill was on the phone with me, reading off who was parked around him, he headed to the car area but tech showed and he needed go...will update when I can.

Here's a quick update on the Hot Rod trophy contenders.  Poteet and Main are through, with the C/BFS record and a good shot at the trophy.  Spectre is on its 4th motor and told me that they'd run by noon.  I dunno which day, tho, cuz I been waitin for 'em and they haven't showed.   Bobby Moore was gonna run, but is also a no show so far.

The 911 roadster just ran with horrible front wheel shimmy, but I heard that clears up at speed.  Davidson ran around 289...or it might have been 298...not a qualifier, in either case.

Joe Amo just ran and while I didn't get a speed, he told me that he hadn't been able to get over 150 because of handling issues and I attribute that to track conditions.  The Demon's rear tires which kinda explain that.  Ron Main told me that he had the traction control set at 10 percent slippage and George said the tires were slipping all the way down the course.  He didn't lift, tho, and backed up the record.

Here are a few photos, including one of Joe Amo demonstrating how hot it is at the starting line, especially in leathers.  Next one I'll show a sequence of absolute exasperation...for which I don't blame the driver a bit.

That tire pic is weird! Why would the tread and cords separate at the sides instead of at the point of contact? It like the tire was rubbing something.

You're right, Don.  The tire pic is weird.  It doesn't show that the wear and degradation started at the contact patch.  Here's another shot of it.

This one is John Puryear in the Puryear Boys' AA/GL and is gonna take several posts to cover..  They had trouble getting it started when they were first in line, and the officials (for some reason...and btw, all of this is just what I observed...I didn't overhear any conversation nor talk to the team at all) had 'em push it over to the right side of the starting line.  There they got it started and wanted to push it back into the lane.

First one official told 'em "yes" then another official came over and told 'em "no."  I could understand this from body language and gestures.

All this time Puryear is sweltering in the 95+ heat and black driver's suit.

More in the next post.
Title: Re: On the Scene at SpeedWeek 2011
Post by: RayTheRat on August 17, 2011, 05:09:09 PM
(Part 2)  The team finally got permission to push the lakester back into the 300 mph lane, which they did.  Then they wanted the push truck back in line, which was no mean feat.  You can see Puryear wiping the sweat from his face ad they're getting things straightened out....that took several cuts at it.

Apparently the truck wasn't aligned well enough so the officials had 'em get it positioned a little straighter.

Finally, the starter checked the belts and gave 'em approval to go....until the course was put on hold for a timing light problem.

Ray,

Is the only shade for the driver coming from the woman with the boots?  Where is the team with the umbrella and other shade offerings?

Hope he made a good clean pass..looks like the body is a little rough..looks like my bike just better
Title: Re: On the Scene at SpeedWeek 2011
Post by: RayTheRat on August 17, 2011, 05:35:34 PM
(Part 3)  In the fist photo, the starter is apparently telling Puryear the reason for the delay and telling him to shut the motor off.  They (the officials) may also have been doing a course sweep, looking for broken glass.  By this time Puryear's been in the car waiting at the starting line for 30 minutes.  He shuts the car off and when the delay is over, it won't start.

The team begins to push the car back tward the pits and Puryear throws the steering wheel out in disgust.

Then the official tells him that he has to get back in the car and steer it.

Puryear jumps on the car like it's a wild horse and is riding it rather than driving it back to the pits.

Again, this is all my observation, not anything I can confirm, particularly  .  I'll go talk to 'em in the pits now.

The body?  On the woman in the boots?  Never mind.  :)  They eventually got an umbrella, but it's still awful hot out here.  (It's 102 in my Burb.)

"Mis-classed indeed. Has to be Fuel, not Gas."

Back to this bike.  In cars (except Streamliners) you can run diesel instead of gas.  There's a diesel Street Roadster that runs Blown Street Roadster every year.  Not very fast, but legal.

So the bike could run diesel in a Gas class, not Fuel -- right?
But my issue is that a bike has to run a motorcycle engine -- right?  (Not a farm implement motor or whatever it was referred to in the video.)

Someone straighten me out on this (I know, that's a big challenge -- just this item).

I've been in that guys shoes before. Had some one break and be next in line. In August that's tough. We keep a wet towel and like John said an umbrella.

One time I got out of the car and when they to get ready instead of me going first like it sould have been they sent the car beside me and guess what...He scattered an engine and I waited again...This time I didn't move from the seat. Tried a little "yoga" by shutting myself down so I didn't use much energy and it helped a lot....One of the reasons I like the October meet. I feel for anyone waiting in the heat...Good Luck to all running and thanks for the good info and pics................................JD

Stan, it's always been my understanding you have to run a mc engine in a mc also. I was thinking diesel put you in fuel cuz it's not event gas but I dunno...
So yes, that thing should never have made it out of tech IMO.

I just got home a few hours ago (have to go into work tomorrow), will post up a few pictures after I spend a few hours downloading and backing them up.
I survived the down pour at the Bend, but the tent did not. Wind beat it up so badly that the fiber glass poles were split lengthwise so it is no resting in peace in a dumpster.
Unfortunately my car did not fare a lot better. On the way home while I was in a convenience store buying some munchies a dude in a Ford F350 super duty decided to use some of the space occupied by my car for his front bumper, and he totaled the drivers side rear door and took out the window glass. Spent 1.5 hours with duct tape and card board and sealed up the window, and discovered that with the blending provided by the duct tape the car is quieter now at speed that it was with all the glass. My old war horse may get retired after this in spite of how much I love the car. I did use it to tow a full sized late model truck out of the mire at the bend after the storm, as I saw the rain coming and moved up on the road shoulder before the heavy rain hit. I will have some pictures of the mess later.

More to follow after food, a couple hours sleep and some picture review.

Attached are 3 images of Ray the videographer at his tower that I could locate quickly.

The first is Ray watching a bird at the Mike Cook Shootout.
The exhausted bird, was taking shelter under one of the cars and drinking water we put out for it.
The second is Ray at the base of his video tower at the Mike Cook Shootout.
The third is Ray going up the ladder to join Pork Pie at the top of the tower at the Mike Cook Shootout.

Ray I will miss your company during the breaks in the runs, and your willingness to laugh, and your sea stories.
The historical record of Bonneville will be diminished by the loss of his video coverage from that high tower vantage point, and his willingness to wait and watch for hours on end to document every run. It was a labor of love done for the simple enjoyment of seeing and hearing the cars run.

To his partner, Stan (I hope I am remembering your name correctly), please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss!

The non-bike engine thing should disqualify the bike from A/PBG.  A while back I asked SCTA about running a Briggs Vanguard V twin in the pushrod bike classes.  It is virtually almost nearly the same engine used in the Ridley motorcycles.  Tom Evans answered that the Ridley engines were not sourced from Briggs so the Briggs engine would not quality as a motorcycle engine.  That seemed like a reasonable answer to me.  So I doubt the little diesel would qualify either . . . and the 350 A/BPF class has an open record.  Wonder if he took it to impound?

First run.  Bike just went soooo smoooooth. Took it easy. Wanted to get a feeling of things and not spoil the fun on the first run.
I just couldn't believe it: timing slip said: 98 ( point something ) mph.
Couldn't be more happy.

Hotrod, thanks for the pics of Ray. I remember my wife Tricia being invited by Ray to climb up his tower to get a better view as I went by. I also remember returning to the salt the day after the 2010 Loctite/Mike Cook's Shootout was over. Ray was there preparing to tear down his tower. I stopped and talked to him. Nice guy and knew a lot about every racer and who did what. I believe I was out there to return "Speedy", the timing tower official mascot who took a ride in the Ack Attack that year, Back to his owner... Sad to see guys like him go. All part of the Bonneville experience and there will be a void where Ray used to be...

Some morning photos.

The lake at Land's End is still there, but it's getting smaller every day.

Lars and his nitro Indian in Impound already so soon.  Amazing.

The Got Salt lakester finally made it to Impound.

The HRM Camaro cooked the motor, but got it running on 2 cylinders.  They changed classes to F/CBFALT and qualified for a record.  Freiberger told me that if he didn't get one h*ll of a good push from the truck, the motor would just stumble all over itself (I wonder why?...,sarcasm intended) so he figgered it was a 50-50 chance of backing up the record.  Still pretty amazing.

Last nite Kenny Hoover ran the Spectre liner with bullet #4 (out of the 5 motors they brought) and almost qualified, but came up a tiny bit short.

Here are a few shots of the mud flats near the bend in the road after the storm on Sunday.

shot #1 mudflats right after the storm with knocked down tents and standing water
shot #2 same time showing mud tracks were I pulled a pickup off the mudflats onto the road as he could not move on the slimy mud once he tried to get off the flat onto the elevated portion of the road in the 2 inch deep goo.

This shot is a hand held night shot with available light of the full moon about 3:00 in the morning. The sky was clearing and the full moon was like a street light. Exposure time was 2.5 seconds so it is a little shaky. Everyone that could get their cars off the mud or who arrived back at the bend after the storm found a spot on the raised cause way of the road shoulder and we all slept in our cars or beside them on the ground.

The second shot is another view of the ad hoc parking on the road shoulder at sun rise.

My favourite is the Blowfish though. She looks SO stable!

Once the sun came up folks began to access the damages. Several of us had knocked down tents, or blown over canopies. Many tried to move their cars in the mud that by now was very sticky about like walking on peanut butter. It would literally suck your shoes off as you walked, and built up on tires making it very difficult to move vehicles.

Those not in a rush to move their gear simply left it as is until later in the day when the mud stiffened as it dried out. By night fall you could drive on it again if you were careful where you drove.

Yes, thanks RTR.  The coupe is the one that the door flew open at speed and damaged beyond repair.  So they ran without the doors!  I think the car was out there last year in bare metal.

Oh yeah, Tuesday Long/Dhort Course runs are posted on SCTA site.

"Jay Allen, Broken Spoke racing qualified on his 3000cc HD @ 185.117 on a 182.? record. I think it's MPS-PG"

I wonder how Jay Allen is running the "M" class.  I am about 90% sure he has S&S cases.  It would be nice if they weren't enforcing that rule any more.  Looking at the run logs, he was in MPS-PG.

On the Wilcox Garage roadster spin..If you've never driven a roadster when it runs out of power (pulling) it will start its dance and you will be along for the ride. Most of the time it has nothing to do with your skills, you just need to hopefully to continue to pull all the way through the traps. Most of the time roadster spins happen at the end of their run. For the most part an ill handling one or one thats not heavy enough will do it earlier..........................Love them roadsters.

PS: my son spun ours cause it was too light and I was lucky enough to drive it between the 4 and 5 when it went where it wanted to go without a spin...It gained 1.5 mph in that mile and that's just not enough pushing 32 grille shell..

The S&S rule depends on if it's the brand of engine in a manufacturing run.

Four more:

An ex-ASA oval track car running as a Gas Altered.  (Altered, I guess!!!  Tube frame, fiberglass body.)

Nancy Wennerberg getting pushed off the line.  She ran in the high 180s.

Bobby Moore's Maro Special.  He's still shaking the car down, but ran right around 300 in the 4th mile...which is as far as Lee Kennedy allowed him to run to verify the chute.  He's only 104 mph short of top speed for the meet.

Jack Rogers' Gas Coupe Camaro.  Hmmm...looks a lot like my Camaro.  Well, my little V6 critter isn't quite as fast...bnut it's the same color.  :)

I am still among the living.  Nancy has made a few runs in the past two days -- and the bike is stuck at about 190.  I'm gonna suit up and go for a ride on the long course in a little while to see if I can urge the scooter to scoot a bit faster.  I'll be back here again with more stories later.

But -- first of all, the Salt Talks story continues.  I'll post on that thread, too, but I'll officially announce here that - - -

- - - we're going to stage another Salt Talks at World of Speed on Wednesday evening.  It'll be a smaller version since the event is a smaller event, but since the weather played merry hell with us at the SpeedWeek Salt Talks we didn't give away most of the gifts and didn't eat much of the food.  So - we'll do it again for all that want to share some stories and lies and food.  The usual thing will be the going idea -- starting time about six, hamburgers and chips and pop (no pasties, sorry, but maybe some chicken breasts), a few donation cans and some t-shirts and lots of gifts that were donated to help support the site.  If you weren't at SW -- here's your chance to visit.  The Salt Talks 2011 V.2 will be at the Bend in the Road Wednesday night (I don't have a calendar here -- I think it's the 14th or so).  See you there.

Got Salt had a good run this morning, but I don't know what the speed was.  I've only got an FM handset (it's WAY too confusing to try listening to 4 courses AND the track officials) and didn't catch the speed.

But while I'm waiting for the Hot Rod trophy presentation, here are a few more photos.

The Puryear lakester got a new starter solenoid and also got a good run this morning.

A classic belly tank lakester.

And 2 shots of a Saab 96 that got the record in J/Production...with its 3-cylinder 2-stroke motor.

The S&S rule depends on if it's the brand of engine in a manufacturing run.

If it is the bike he has ran in the past, it is a custom aftermarket chassis, not a Big Dog or something OE.

There was another bike last year that ran an S&S engine and got a certified record in MPS-PBG that wasn't an OE chassis.

I wouldn't be that lucky if I tried.

Shane, we have nothing special in the swingarm.  I made that run an hour ago, like I sorta promised, and did a 196++ best mile, with all three of 'em in the 194 - 196 range.  I had a pleasant ride -- easy enough that I could spend time moving around looking for results from a different tuck, different fore-to-aft position, and so on.  I spun the tire for three or four seconds at the 3 1/2 - 3 3/4 because I was scrunched up front trying to get my head into the bubble.  I saw the spinning (no fishtailing, just spinning wheel) and pedaled it a tiny bit and moved back -- and got it back under control and rode my fastest in that last mile.

But I've therefore decided I could use some weight back there and maybe one less tooth on the rear sprocket.  Maybe the sprocket change will happen tonight -- maybe before WoS.  The swingarm weight won't happen 'til WoS for sure.

James had his 600 turbo that he and Paul Powell built, and set a record at 201 in MPS/BG-650, and got a red hat. He popped a motor early in the meet, swapped it out, and set the record.

It was his first trip to the salt, but not his first rodeo, he's been bringing turbo bikes to the ECTA for at least 3 years, and joined the ECTA 200 club on his 750 turbo -naked- earlier this season.

Congrats

I also heard that Fred Vance set a record of 223 in MPS/G-1350, and requalified at 228. WTFG - all motor, no long tail.

Back home.  After the Hot Rod trophy presentation and the runs by several other teams, including the BYU Electric Blue (I'm transferring files from my laptop to the "mainframe"...it takes a while for 22 gig to transfer) I called it a day.  No, a week.  I got there last Thursday.  I'm sure glad I only had a 2 hour drive (relatively uneventful except for the known power brake booster and cooling system leak problems...I'll address them tomorrow) and I'm gonna settle down for some dinner and crash out in my own bed (well, I had my own bed in the back of the Burb....but...)

I had a very nice email from Ray Crowell's widow, Kim.  For those who don't know, Ray C. (not RtR) was the victim of a massive heart attack last Friday and passed very quickly, and according to those who attended him, without suffering.  She asked me to pass on thanks to all those who helped load up the truck and those who provided whatever care they could.  You know who you are...I also thank you.

Finally, I wanna offer good wishes to all the wonderful people I met, new friends and old, while on the salt...the Magic Kingdom.  Thanks to all who inquired about my health (which, all things considered, is pretty good) and to those who waggled their fingers at me and told me not to work so hard.  :)  One of my favorite sayings is, "if it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing."  Seems to be deeply ingrained in me.

I look forward to seeing more friends (some the same) at BUB in about 10 days.  I guess I better get the Burb fixed PDQ.

G'nite,

Well, well -- Nancy and I are NOT at the salt - for the first time in more than a week and a half.  We left Wendover about 2 this afternoon and have made it all the way into SLC for the night.  We'll visit Scott Horner's shop to drop off a bike for some tuning and for a visit with him and a handful of other racers, and also try to see the kids of ours that live here.  Then, tomorrow morning, we'll head to home.  I think I hear the cats meowing to us all this way away from them.

We had a decent week, breaking neither records nor parts.  Nancy ran about 190 a handful of times, and we've traced the lack of super-duper speeds to a couple of things -- including a lack of fully twisting her wrist.  I got in one last pass yesterday - 196.79 - and had a blast riding it down the #1 long course.  A few issues with the run - but nothing that a bit of thought and consideration and modifications to the brain won't fix.

We managed to attend the 200 MPH Club banquet and the City/SCTA-BNI worker feed and party, we went to the "hot rod" show and walkabout Saturday evening at the Nugget.  We had a fine time working with the other volunteer workers and many of the businesses in the Wendover community.

And most of all, we both enjoyed talking with literally hundreds of folks that visit this Forum and this site.  Thanks for making me feel that I'm doing something that you find beneficial, educational, and enjoyable.

We failed you all when we didn't manage to get the on-line streaming audio to run.  That was a big disappointment to everyone -- including me.  I'm pretty sure we'll get it working for World of Speed, though, and once the "ice is broken" we should be better able to continue it at future events.

For those who haven't already found it, here's a link to the SCTA site pages where the results are posted.  Thanks for the SCTA folks -- mostly Ed Safarik -- that put the data up there.  The last day (today, Friday) info. should be up soon.  Link:  http://www.scta-bni.org/Bonneville/Speedweek%202011/results.html

That's it for now.  Stay tuned, and thanks for visiting landracing.com and this Forum.  I'l get back to you all soon.

    Jon,
If you're coming by Columbus tomorrow the Salt Cat Palace is open and has a vacancy if the timing is right for you. If there's room, you can take the donation with you. Glad you had a good week. You guys earned it. Thanks.

Back to you, Doug.  We're in SLC tonight and will probably make it to Billings tomorrow night, or maybe even farther if we get a decent start in the morning.  I could see a quick stop to void and see your palatial digs in the afternoon.  PM (or email) me a phone number (or did you and I just don't remember) and we'll give you a warning call as we're in Bozeman or something -- which should give you plenty of time to come up with an excuse for why you're not home when we get nearby.

As for the donation -- crap -- we don't have the race trailer with us, and the back of the pickup is full.  We'll see if we can cram it in -- or will think about fetching it along with us when we return to Bville for Wos.  No, No, dang it, we won't do it then, either, 'cause we'll be driving through Denver to see the oldest and his newly-pregnant wife on the way from Skandia, Michigan to WoS.  Unh, maybe we can tie it to the roof of the pickup -- or maybe we'll have to wait 'til we drive back home after WF.  Show it to us and I'll take photos and maybe see if I can do something with those, hey?

Ah, the planning that goes into a trip that we knew about months ago.  But -- we'll be in touch tomorrow.  For sure.  Absolutely.  Probably.

Danny Burrow, Troy Trepanier and George's Cameltoe Racing Blowfish are shooting to become the 4th (or maybe 5th) "car" with a speed over 300 mph. .

Ray,  What were the other "cars" than went over 300? :?

One was George Field's Trackmaster (48 or so Simca), then the Lindsley & Leggit Firebird, MacDonald & Pitts Firebird, Kugel & LeFevers Firebird and (of course) the Blowfish.  I coulda sworn that John Rains had run over 3 bills, (he has the D/PS record at 297.633) but it's not in the record listing.  If there are others that have run over 300, could someone fill in the gaps in my knowledge, please?

There are the 3 roadsters.
From the SCTA records pages.

Howe's Welding Spl         A/BFMR    in '91
Emmons, Nickle, Roberts      A/FMR     in '99
Cummins-Beck-Davidson-Thornsberry   A/BFR     in '10

But I guess you are wanting "closed" cars?

If your talking doorslammers then the trackmaster should be taken out.  And blow fish with it's highly modified front end is pretty fishy. :-D. The rest are accurate.    Rains was very close, I believe he went 299 and change, but unofficially was probably over 300.  There was one other car very close but I always forget who he was, he ran a firebird also and spun it back in the late 80's to early 90's.

"Quick Pix" photos from SW.  I tossed some images and HTML together and came up with some stuff on my server covering SW:
http://www.chevyasylum.com/lsr/bsf2011/sw/pix/Welcome.html (http://www.chevyasylum.com/lsr/bsf2011/sw/pix/Welcome.html)

Many of the photos were posted here, but might be worth a 2nd look...and I re-edited some and added some others.  Photos like this moon shot and fireworks photo were fun to get, but a bitch to edit:

I still can't get rid of the pixellation in it.  If ya know a trick, I'd be very grateful if you could share said technique.  The moon shot is actually an HDR combination of 3 images. That helps keep the illumination in check with the full moon and the head/taillight tracers on the ground...but it didn't help the pixellation.

Oh, well.  Hope you enjoy 'em as I did shootin 'em...well, at the first of the week, anyway.  I was pretty well toast by Wednesday...and I split Thursday afternoon instead of Friday.  The critters at Jack Rabbit Flats gave me a full refund on my reservation.  :)

...well, that's where I was most of the time and I'll be there for BUB.

See ya then

I agree about Trackmaster, but those I spoke with always included it as a slammer.  It's about as much a "car" as Hollifield's Fiat:

Fishy Blowfish, huh?  :)

Thanks for the info.

Congratulations for the "Got Salt" bunch and to Frank Silva for his entry into the 200MPH club. Frank has tried for many years. It's a real treat to see someone/team who worked that hard attain their goals especially since they needed a record a bunch over 300 to get in the 2 club. Once again Congrats to Frank.................JD Tone

I'll be home the rest of the day [406 696 5029]. Don't worry about hauling the bike home. I'll bring it with me to WOS. Call when you get in the area, and I'll give you directions for the shortcut to the "hillside" where I live.

We met Frank and crew in 2005 and have pitted next to them since we have started racing the Fairlane in 2007. Frank, Frank Jr., John and crew have gone through a lot just since I've known them to get the record and couldn't be happier for them. Congrats to the whole Got Salt Crew

Jon and Ray, great job on keeping the website up to date all week.  Glad to meet you in person, Ray.  Kudos to Glen, DW and the rest of the gang who put on a great week of smooth racing as usual.  BTW, I think the picture of the destroyed green tent at the Bend Iin the Road was mine...total loss.  See everyone next year, Bruce.

Hi, Matt Shuss here.
I am the new Chief Motorcycle Inspector for SCTA, taking over for Tom Evans as he power-slides into retirement.

I am going to answer the questions I've seen here and then give you my email addy for any and all questions related to motorcycles.

Concerning the diesel fuel motorcycle, it is a factory installed engine on a Royal Enfield motorcycle.
Diesel bikes run in the gas class, rule 2.B, page 18.

Jay Allen was an APS bike, I did the record cert on that. He does have an S&S engine and a Big Boar frame. If it says MPS, it is a typo on the web site.

Tom Evans and I discuss every record cert to be sure the bike is classified correctly.
We aim to be correct 100% of the time, so if you see an incorrect record, email me and I can discuss it with you.

As you can see by my number of posts, I do not frequent this board on a regular basis.
Because of my position, I cannot conduct free ranging discussions on this board, so email me directly.

Thank you,

Matt Shuss

Matt, thank you very much for your comments and appearance on this Forum.  I think it's fair to say that all of us are pleased to know that you're visiting here, even if it's only now and then, and that you're open to hearing from any of us.  I think that it's also fair to say that we (okay, at least most of us) understand why you don't promise to look here for each and every question and discussion about bikes.  And thanks for telling us that you'll be willing to hear from any of us individually when we've got questions or situations that need your input.

Best wishes -- and gee, I wish we had made it to impound so we could have had your signature in our logbook and on a record cert.

Slim,

Sorry you didn't make it by.

I can answer questions on a specific topic when people email me, but putting them on the board leaves them open to many different interpretations which might not be in the scope of the original question.

Class designation is the most difficult problem we have and we are working on a better way for people to easily understand the differences.

Okay, gotta slip a little note in here real quick!!

Do you know that ALL of you (MY) racers were super fantastic all week?  You did everything just right entering and leaving the salt and I'm proud of you!!   I got a chance to meet a lot of the racers that I only knew as names here on the forum, but now, there is a face to go along with those members.

I received some very special gifts this year and want to thank you publicly for them.  It amazes me that you guys would do that for me and I want you to know how much I sincerely appreciate it.....I also appreciate the coffee, goodies, and breakfast that I received every day.  Those may seem like little things to you, but they feel huge to me.

Congratulations to all the new record holders.  I didn't get out on the salt this year, so I missed everyone's runs     But it was so crazy at Land's End I felt I should stay there and do my job.

I just wanted all of you to know how terrific you are and to tell you Thank You.  I couldn't have done my job without your cooperation!!  So, Kudos to all of you!!

See you on the salt!!

Lynda

You sneaky bugger.

Were ya using the glare off my shaved head like a beacon?  I took such a ration of sh*t from so many people for not wearing a hat (I know...they did it outta care and concern and love) that I didn't bother to shave it...and I trimmed the beard back cuz I kept rolling over on it in bed and waking myself up.  Duh.  Maybe I shoulda started braiding it,  huh?

Here's a shot Pork Pie got last year...I spose I could grow the beard again and do the head shaving thing again and then you could find me in any local asylum or looney bin.  ;)

Lynda,
Thank you for saving us when we ran out of gas.
We were in impound that mourning, made our record run, tore the bike down for inspection, put it back together, changed classes, made a qualifying run, put it back in impound, serviced the bike and was driving the recovery vehicle to get fuel when we ran out of gas.
It was 3 o'clock and we had not even taken time to eat, so we were a little on the ragged edge.
Also a thanks to Wayno and Dr Goggles for returning your gas can for us.

Thanks again, Don

If your talking doorslammers then the trackmaster should be taken out.  And blow fish with it's highly modified front end is pretty fishy. :-D. The rest are accurate.    Rains was very close, I believe he went 299 and change, but unofficially was probably over 300.  There was one other car very close but I always forget who he was, he ran a firebird also and spun it back in the late 80's to early 90's.

At WOS in 2006, Rains went last mile 299.923 in the last mile with a 303.244 exit speed.  I remember 'watching' that on a thread.

Still working on operating our new camera so I'm sorry about the shaking camera in spots. If you usually camp at the bend but missed this year this will show you what you missed. If you were camping at the bend you just might be in this video. Good times no matter what mother nature drops out of the sky. Oh ya you might have seen our family that night washing off in the truck stop hose LOL. Some of us were too dirty to go in the store to pay for a shower :-P

My bike and my team, we knocked down four 500cc records and learned a lot about the bike and what to do on the salt. Landracing.com is totally invaluable, what I learned to prepare and how to act and the general. I'm glad that I took the advice I found here.

Well, in a effort to outdo everyone else, I decided to have both my tow vehicle and my race car and trailer towed out on to the salt.
It seem's the truck's engine was only good for 740 of the 750 miles needed from Vancouver, Wa. to Wendover.
Friday morning I bummed a ride out to the salt with Mr. Tow (a really nice guy), and while I set up our pit and unloaded the car, two of my crew and about five or six people (most of who's names I don't even know) pulled the dead bullet out of the truck.
After about four hours and fifty phone calls, I located a fresh rebuilt long block in Phoenix, Az.
Meanwhile two of my crew guys found out that if you cut up mudflap brackets (sorry Dennis) and buy muffler brackets you can adapt a push bar to fit a side by side ATV.
Sunday we got the car teched in and aborted our first pass at the 1 mile (stuck poppet valve in fuel system).
Monday the engine shipped to SLC and we aborted at the 1 mile again (green stuff growing in magneto cap).
Tuesday came off the line and had it sideways in 1st gear (see Youtube Speedweek 2011), somehow got it straightened and still ran 232 spinning the tires thru third gear.
The crew all had to leave Wednesday, but great friend Lionel Pitts and I drove into Salt Lake City and picked up the new bullet.
Thursday morning,  Montana Mike Wesche helped Lionel and I put the motor in.
Friday Lionel and I worked until dark and drove the whole enchelada off the salt at 9p.m. making us the last people at Speedweek 2011.
We left Wendover at 7 s.m. Saturday and pulled into Vancouver at 11 p.m. Saturday night.
It was one hell of a experience, and I met so many new friend's and good people in Wendover that I would do it again in a , well a while down the road.
Thanx again to Lionel Pitts, MIke Wesche, Mr. Tow and all the people who told me that MY Studebaker made their day........................  Bob Drury

While we were gassing up to leave for home, the EMT rig pulled in to fill up.
I asked them about emergencies on the salt and they said other than the fatal heart attack, they had one pit incident and one racer injury which looked worse than it turned out to be, so congratulation's to all the racer's and for the SCTA/BNI for a very well planned and run meet.

I'm the guy who didn't make it to Speedweek to help Jon with webcasting audio for ya'll.  However, I have certainly experienced what is clear to many, that the Land Racing community is first class.  The little guy in the photo is the one who went in for eye surgery Friday before the racing started.  It was successful and he's all healed up.  The ugly guy holding him has lost most of the hair on his coco from medical treatments.  That would be me.  And I'm doing well, too.  As it happens, I was out to the Seattle area to visit family earlier this month, staying in Mukilteo where my sister lives with her shop owner hubby, Ed's Automotive and Machine.  He does race motors and had the Buzzard Bait 897 C/GC Camaro motor on his dyno.  I was expecting to see their car run during Speedweek.

It didn't happen, I cancelled on Jon at the last minute.  But, the Buzzard Bait crew from Enumclaw gathered an assortment of shirts and had a 2010-2012 Calendar signed by a whole bunch of VERY gracious people there on the salt for the race.  I'm humbled.  What an incredibly nice thing to do for me and for the boy.

I wish to thank all of the folks who were so generous in thinking of us:  Buzzard Bait, Bean Bandits, Four Aces, Spirits of the Lakes, Black Creek Racing, and each and every one who signed the calendar.

Those teams were all at Speedweek, not sure which ran on records, 'cause I wasn't.

Doc Freud, Ed has been building race engines around your area for 40 years, K-boats with George Woods driving and several world boat records from the FIN (Nautical), years of sprint cars, drag engines, engine builds for vintage sports car racing, now doing engines for piston unlimited hydroplanes and those sprint boats that run in ditches.  He's out on 44th West, I'll pm you his home number & address.
