Pristine, my sainted aunt! It's a semi-clean one (or two or...) owner that was only driven to church by a little...well, never mind. It gets me here and there.
Yep. I'm here. It's a good place to be. Right now I'm parked at the Bend in the Road...but on the other side if the Bend...Ya can't miss the Honey Buckets (Port-a-Potties.) I'm online using my Android phone as a tethered cellular modem. It sure ain't fiber optic speed.
First to clarify things. Here's where ya can't camp.
The one hour parking is only for the gravel area. I guess the No Fireworks is the same, but I'd need further clarification on that.
Then there's some of the Land's End gang.
There's nothing about "Flats" with that bunch!
Next post will be where ya CAN camp.
A quick addendum to my last post. George Poteet has (at least) 3 goals: the C/BGS record, the overall streamliner record (they're running a 347" motor this year) and the Hot Rod trophy for the 3rd year in a row.
Danny Burrow, Troy Trepanier and George's Cameltoe Racing Blowfish are shooting to become the 4th (or maybe 5th) "car" with a speed over 300 mph. The record in B/BFCC is 294, set by Tom Burkland in 1985...in the Datsun B210 (that looked NOTHING like a Datsun when they got thru with it.) The speed they are looking for is north of 308.
Ray, Slim, as always, your documentation of this event is world class.
George Poteet just put the Blowfish into impound with a 300 run -- on an old Tom Burkland 294 record. Exit speed was 303. Fastest run of the meet so far -- but heck, we've been running for all of what, a half-hour?
Ray, Ray, if you think you can take cool photos using the moon and a great car -- what do you think of this one?
How 'bout this?

Or maybe this?

I didn't think much about the fact that we had a nice moon rising 'til Nancy mentioned it as we were leaving the salt after our evening of pit-closing duties. We were within a mile or so of Land's End when we (okay, when I) decided to turn around and drive all the way back to the SSS pit for these photos. Not the greatest subject, maybe, but a good moonrise is only available to us once in a long while out here -- so we did return to the pit and did take some photos. Whether or not they're calendar (note the correct spelling, Jim) -- you've gotta try to grab the opportunity and go with it.
Thanks to all, and to all a good night.
Thanks for the updates!! :-)
If someone could get some pictures of Don's RZ350, I'd really like to see more of that bike!! :-D

Any more pics of the V4F???
Great work so far!

My friend Danny Burrow was supposed to make a backup run in the Blowfish this morning. Any numbers?
Steve, at least we're not alone in missing the action...comfort in numbers, right? Not.
According to Rad Rides facebook page it was 299 for Blowfish.
I just heard via Facebook from a reliable source that Ray passed away today out on the salt from a heart attack. He will be sorely missed, great great photographer for all of us. Our prayers for his family, God Speed Ray, rest in peace.
A real gully washer just came through the Bend in the Road :-(I was the second one there when he went down, We got him out just fine. Wayno
Any update on the motorcycle streamliner that went down this afternoon? It did not look good from our vantage point. Hope the rider is ok.
The reports of my demise are somewhat premature. I reported the fatality on Friday. I don't know the other Ray's last name, but He was the dude who had the huge scaffolding and did the videos of the racing. May he rest in peace.

Oh no! The other Ray was a really nice guy, that's so sad. :-(
We think he may be the one that captured the notorious video of McVicar's fastest man without a bike video.
Glad you are still with us RTR and thanks for the reporting & pics!

Same hot air problem with the Blowfish, but I included it to report that it ran 308 and 314 out the back to qualify for a record return in the morning.
what about the audio hook up did that not happen. would really like to hear the cars.
any word on #33 liner?
any word on #33 liner?
I haven't seen the #33 Maro liner run since Saturday.
I've just had my own little bit of fun. I got busy with everything and let the inverters draw the battery in the Burb down...that was after fixing a water leak earlier in the day.
Lucky I had something I was gonna experiment with.
A 45w solar power supply that brought the battery from 11.1v to 12.1v and I was able to get the thing started. I think I'm thru for the day.

From what I am seeing Leslie has upped the record! Will 200.xxx be next? Or unload the turbo bike and see what she has in it?
Congratulations to Leslie and Crew!

Ray, I want to get a solar charging set-up for our High School team - what exactly do you have and where can I get it? let me know when you have time. Really enjoy this thread, thank you.
The black Gus Gus liner in the pix with the heat distortion - how are they doing? They certainly are living their dream.
Ray, have you caught a pic of Stan Johnson's '27? He and Curt and the crew are supposed to be out there. I think it's # 339, and a beautiful car, at that.
On, Wisconsin!
Quick update: Both the Speed Demon and Spirit of Rett ran a few minutes ago. Demon was a turnout (one of the crew members told me, "we really need this run"...didn't get it) and Nearburg in Rett ran around 370 to back up his class record (old record in A/GS was 350.)
More as I get it.
I'm back and sitting here looking at the pictures on all these pages, and if you're marveling at the beauty of the cars they've shown, they weren't picked for their looks. The quality of the entries is the highest ever.

Thanks to all who have provided info so far. I am sure all of us at work or at home staring at a screen are much appreciative. While I wait (usually impatiently), I have created a spreadsheet that I dump the run logs into. For any who are interested, I attached an xls of runs through Monday.
Ray,
Is the only shade for the driver coming from the woman with the boots? Where is the team with the umbrella and other shade offerings?
Hope he made a good clean pass..looks like the body is a little rough..looks like my bike just better

The body? On the woman in the boots? Never mind. :) They eventually got an umbrella, but it's still awful hot out here. (It's 102 in my Burb.)
He never got a run as part 3 explains...and the last foto should be the first...the server scrambled 'em.
"Mis-classed indeed. Has to be Fuel, not Gas."
Back to this bike. In cars (except Streamliners) you can run diesel instead of gas. There's a diesel Street Roadster that runs Blown Street Roadster every year. Not very fast, but legal.
So the bike could run diesel in a Gas class, not Fuel -- right?
But my issue is that a bike has to run a motorcycle engine -- right? (Not a farm implement motor or whatever it was referred to in the video.)
Someone straighten me out on this (I know, that's a big challenge -- just this item).

Attached are 3 images of Ray the videographer at his tower that I could locate quickly.
The first is Ray watching a bird at the Mike Cook Shootout.
The exhausted bird, was taking shelter under one of the cars and drinking water we put out for it.
The second is Ray at the base of his video tower at the Mike Cook Shootout.
The third is Ray going up the ladder to join Pork Pie at the top of the tower at the Mike Cook Shootout.
Ray I will miss your company during the breaks in the runs, and your willingness to laugh, and your sea stories.
The historical record of Bonneville will be diminished by the loss of his video coverage from that high tower vantage point, and his willingness to wait and watch for hours on end to document every run. It was a labor of love done for the simple enjoyment of seeing and hearing the cars run.
To his partner, Stan (I hope I am remembering your name correctly), please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss!
Larry
The video sure had a great shot of a classic Street Roadster spin. Anyone who thinks they coulda saved that one is wrong.

Nice patina on that one. You're doing a stellar job, Ray.
I am still among the living. Nancy has made a few runs in the past two days -- and the bike is stuck at about 190. I'm gonna suit up and go for a ride on the long course in a little while to see if I can urge the scooter to scoot a bit faster. I'll be back here again with more stories later.
But -- first of all, the Salt Talks story continues. I'll post on that thread, too, but I'll officially announce here that - - -
- - - we're going to stage another Salt Talks at World of Speed on Wednesday evening. It'll be a smaller version since the event is a smaller event, but since the weather played merry hell with us at the SpeedWeek Salt Talks we didn't give away most of the gifts and didn't eat much of the food. So - we'll do it again for all that want to share some stories and lies and food. The usual thing will be the going idea -- starting time about six, hamburgers and chips and pop (no pasties, sorry, but maybe some chicken breasts), a few donation cans and some t-shirts and lots of gifts that were donated to help support the site. If you weren't at SW -- here's your chance to visit. The Salt Talks 2011 V.2 will be at the Bend in the Road Wednesday night (I don't have a calendar here -- I think it's the 14th or so). See you there.
The S&S rule depends on if it's the brand of engine in a manufacturing run.

Shane, we have nothing special in the swingarm. I made that run an hour ago, like I sorta promised, and did a 196++ best mile, with all three of 'em in the 194 - 196 range. I had a pleasant ride -- easy enough that I could spend time moving around looking for results from a different tuck, different fore-to-aft position, and so on. I spun the tire for three or four seconds at the 3 1/2 - 3 3/4 because I was scrunched up front trying to get my head into the bubble. I saw the spinning (no fishtailing, just spinning wheel) and pedaled it a tiny bit and moved back -- and got it back under control and rode my fastest in that last mile.
But I've therefore decided I could use some weight back there and maybe one less tooth on the rear sprocket. Maybe the sprocket change will happen tonight -- maybe before WoS. The swingarm weight won't happen 'til WoS for sure.
I saw in the SCTA record results that the Gus Gus Streamliner got Fabio Montani in the three club yesterday. Freud says they requalified at 303 today. Quite a car. Helluva job for someone building it in, and hauling it from, Italy.

probly need a bigger rear gear on the back wheel.
couldn't tell how far down the track he took it.
a nice kid from new york had a diesel water pump construction engine
in a bike at loring this year.his goal was 50 mph. topped out at about 56 (?).
musta been about 60 some rear gear teeth.

Word through social media is James Height rode his motorcycle into the 2 club today. I know he had his turbo 650 and 750 out there. Wish I knew more.

It seemed every change we made had no effect on how it handled. The only thing we seemed to have a real handle on was the engine ! I'm very excited to be bringing home a running car so I can hit the local cruise in !
Ray,
Thanks for all your photos and commentary. Sounds like being a photographer is sort of like being a racer, STUFF happens!

Ray, What were the other "cars" than went over 300? :?
If your talking doorslammers then the trackmaster should be taken out. And blow fish with it's highly modified front end is pretty fishy. :-D. The rest are accurate. Rains was very close, I believe he went 299 and change, but unofficially was probably over 300. There was one other car very close but I always forget who he was, he ran a firebird also and spun it back in the late 80's to early 90's.

Top Gun - Biggest Speed Differential For Record
|
Congratulations for the "Got Salt" bunch and to Frank Silva for his entry into the 200MPH club. Frank has tried for many years. It's a real treat to see someone/team who worked that hard attain their goals especially since they needed a record a bunch over 300 to get in the 2 club. Once again Congrats to Frank.................JD ToneWe met Frank and crew in 2005 and have pitted next to them since we have started racing the Fairlane in 2007. Frank, Frank Jr., John and crew have gone through a lot just since I've known them to get the record and couldn't be happier for them. Congrats to the whole Got Salt Crew
Hi, Matt Shuss here.
I am the new Chief Motorcycle Inspector for SCTA, taking over for Tom Evans as he power-slides into retirement.
I am going to answer the questions I've seen here and then give you my email addy for any and all questions related to motorcycles.
Concerning the diesel fuel motorcycle, it is a factory installed engine on a Royal Enfield motorcycle.
Diesel bikes run in the gas class, rule 2.B, page 18.
Jay Allen was an APS bike, I did the record cert on that. He does have an S&S engine and a Big Boar frame. If it says MPS, it is a typo on the web site.
Tom Evans and I discuss every record cert to be sure the bike is classified correctly.
We aim to be correct 100% of the time, so if you see an incorrect record, email me and I can discuss it with you.
As you can see by my number of posts, I do not frequent this board on a regular basis.
Because of my position, I cannot conduct free ranging discussions on this board, so email me directly.
Thank you,
Matt Shuss

Ray, since you let your hair grow out, it's more difficult to identify you.
You sneaky bugger.

Why would you exclude Blowfish Troy? It is a legal Comp Coupe.
DW
And Blowfish is certaintly the equal of all others last week.
DW
Well it's not salt footage but I figured someone might get a kick out of our experience at the bend in the road last week:

Still working on operating our new camera so I'm sorry about the shaking camera in spots. If you usually camp at the bend but missed this year this will show you what you missed. If you were camping at the bend you just might be in this video. Good times no matter what mother nature drops out of the sky. Oh ya you might have seen our family that night washing off in the truck stop hose LOL. Some of us were too dirty to go in the store to pay for a shower :-P
