Title: Maxton April Meet Whos Going?
Post by: ronnieroadster on March 03, 2011, 09:36:49 PM
Hi Gang. Well theres less than a Month to go before the April meet whos going?
We are heading South with our home built Lakester looking forward to making a few more shake down runs. After such a brutal winter I can not think of a better way to celebrate Spring than making a full throttle pass on the Maxton monster mile.  :-)

I will be there with a friends brand new truck. It will be it's first outing and his first time driving at Maxton. We are running an S10 with much power!!! Hope for some good speed.
Also some other friends will be there too. One with a pretty fast Jaguar and another with a nitrous firebird. Yall might remember them.

We had our last chassis dyno session yesterday, with good numbers. One more thrash ahead on the tranny. "Maxton" front spoiler repair and the new GTA rear wing install are going on now. We're well on our way to escaping the snow and getting into the fire ants. See you in less than a month.

Tomorrow/this weekend, I am Pulling the Stude around to the other side of  shop 2, to the lift so I can put her up in the air to change rear wheels and tires, change the oil, check all the steering and suspension bolts and joints etc... may re-gear the rear. Get the hauler ready and double check all my safety gear and equipment.

I may put some sort of air intake in the grill for some fresh air to the radiator and maybe to the carb ?  Still thinking ?

See you all in a few weeks.

Charles

Fingers crossed to be there with the ZX-10 and 6rr.  Things went from promising to a mad thrash with some big last minute set backs.  Hope to see everyone there.

Amy and I will be there but don't know about the camaro. Too many snow events and rain (No inside garage space, thats where the tools and parts live). :-P  But we are thrashing away. It will definently be there in May. :-D

The turbo ZX10 is ready, and I'll be tuning the nitrous ZX10 today to maybe bring as a backup.

My lovely wife Leslie and baby boy Ben will be joining me, looking forward to seeing everyone at the event and the banquet.

Not sure you folks from up north will be able to handle our lows in the mid 30's or highs in the mid 60's. Don't forget to bring your extreme weather gear.

Nancy and I intend to be at the April event to do our volunteer work but not race.  Neither bike is ready to race -- and even so, we'll probably only give the production ZX14 a single run or two for tuning - before heading to Bonneville this August.  Back to April -- we will not race unless someone invites me to take his bike down the track.  I'll probably therefore pack my leathers as a "just in case".  See you in a month, folks.

Its going to be great feeling mid 60's temps. Heck in front of my shop theres still a mountain of snow its going to be June before this stuff goes away! Test driving the Lakester around these snow piles is a site to see. If the temps drop to low at Maxton I will just keep my fire suit on LOL

No time to build this year. Bought a car out of Holister, CA. On a transporter should get here to Tampa. FL next week. It will be a mad thrash to move the seat, get the head restraint up to specs. A rear gear change is probalbly necessary but won't know until we see what gear is in the car now. Update fire bottles, chassis dyno to get the carbs close. Other than that...nothing to do!

Bill - call me on 910-616-6417.  I'm at the other end of the Courtney Campbell for another 10 days or so.  Love to see you and the car.

No racing for me so far as my time has been split between Momcare and shop upgrades.  Hope to get more runs in before we have to move.  But as always, I'll be there with schedule in hand.

Dan

Dan, will do. I am on the east coast this weekend. I will be back Monday morning. The Car is not here yet....Reliable Carriers says next Fri or Sat. I have a friend with a Pro Stock operation that is between sponsors. He is letting me use his shop on the west coast of Fla. Most of us can't do this alone. I have the help of some really good and knowledgable people. My Monday Morning is crazy but I will try and call in the afternoon.

This car has a story. The guy who built it wanted to go to Bonneville. He got to ElMirage but got sick and passed before he got to the Salt. I told his friend Hal, I would take the Camaro to Bonneville this year just like Mark left the car. Mark's car will get to the salt. I never met the man but it seems like the right thing to do. We will go to Maxton to see how the "D" motor runs. Come back in May to see if we can improve and then prepare for the big adventure. Well that is the plan anyway.

I'm jealous, I had that 50 Ford couple from 1956 to 1960, sold it for $400..I sure regret that. Every one I find today in decent shape costs a ton which I don't have. So I guess I can drool over yours. It looks great, hope you make it to Maxton when I am there.

I use the "WheelSmith" in CA to make my wheels... He uses steel smoothies with 360 degree welded centers and welds the Dzus tabs on for using Moon Disc's.. I also have him powedercoat them for me, but you can also save a few $ and some time by just having him primer them for you.  Remember the steel valve stems too.

Fuel tank.. just mount a 10 Gal Fuel Cell in the Trunk. (Summit or Jegs has nice steel ones with safety foam in them)  yes powedercoated red  LOL

I wish the fuel tank was an easy fix...I'm running old school Hilborn injectors, and the tank need to be in front of the pump...that;s on the front of the motor....So without having a large tank in the trunk, pumping to a very small one up front, I think I'm gonna try and fit a 3.5 gal Moon tank in front of the rad........??

Mark Wolbrink-yes, 1950 Ford-aaargh- my dad sold his four door for $200 when I was 15- offer it to me? noooo
The only reason to tease about our weather in April is because it could already be too hot in May and June? Not a chance for cool.

t-minus less than 12 days till we load up and head out.. had the car on the chassis dyno yesterday and found out no 3rd gear in the tranny.  :x so needless to say car is torn all apart and trans will be at the shop bright an early monday morning. hopefully its something simple and we can get the car back together an dynoed before next week. the trans is brand new with less than ten total low speed passes on it between loring an maxton so i dunno whats goin on in there.. so frustrating!! heres how the poor car sits as of this afternoon. ready for the thrash to go back together lol

Right there with you guys. Two months ago I had a good plan. Now I am thrashing to catch up. Both Optima batteries were bad. Got the 411 from my sterio installer to buy new ones at Sam's Club. They were $133.32 each versus $179 on line for 8004's. All I need now are my wheels which should be here Thurs...Thanks Charles for the help on the rims. The Wheelsmith folks built the rims in a day and they are already shipped. I called them on Monday! The tires are due to the Distributor in Daytona on Fri. and should be to me by Monday. Mount them up check for clearance and off to the chassis dyno on Tues. or Wed. night. If all goes well we will load up Thurs and leave early Friday AM. Charles the time sure did fly by from when you first made this thread!

Just need to button up a few things and get a base tune on the chassis dyno, and clean her up.

Well after another attempt on the dyno we determiner the torque converter is junk so the Lakester will not be making it this meet. This sucks we put a ton of effort into trying to get the trans sorted but all the time it was the converter!
But were still coming to help out as needed and calm down from all this grief. Now we have more time to get stuff sorted for the May meet. See everyone Friday.

I am down at Myrtle Beach at our 'Birds At The Beach Blue Bird Rally and there will be a small group of us coming up to Maxton on Friday morning. I have had the WABBIT on a chassis dyno and I am happy with the results, it has a great power band from 6400 all the way up to 9000 rpm now, but we had to replace the clutch and pressure plate and while we were at it we freshened up the spare trans-axle and installed it too. I have been driving it on the street here at he beach to get some miles on the trans-axle so it will shift a little easier, later this year before heading to Bonneville we will install a cable shifter to improve the shifting.

See Ya there 8-)

John, are you aware of the big changes at Maxton - changes that might well affect you and the other BlueBird folks?  Among other things -- no entrance before 9AM Friday, which might not be a problem, but also - you might not be able to park where you've gathered in the past.  I'd suggest that (if you haven't already done so) you contact Joe Timney for details -- before you park and then get asked to move.

Before Friday I will be in contact with Joe Manis who at my last checking still owned the area that we parked on (Manis Manufactured Homes) I had already talked with Joe Timney earlier in the year and we won't be coming to the track until Friday morning, we can be very flexible as to where we park.

Ron, Ronnie,

Bummer news to hear.  Could have always been worse - the troubles surfaced at home and not after the tow down......  Hope you can make the most of everything and have a safe trip, at least you are bound to get a glimpse of Spring!

Buddy and I [with the help of many others] still have a good shot at having his lakester ready to shake down at Loring.  To do it we will have to stay on project and tug the Wescott's on the homefront this weekend.  Probably wind up having to pass on any other extended safaries before Loring as well.

What exactly or does anyone even know what the big changes at Maxtone are? I am a newbie, was down for Friday on the October event. Is like the pit / parking area condensed? Arriving 9A should not be a problem. What does one bring to deal with the Frie Ants?

you will be directed to the new pit area on arrival, as far as fireants is concerned just don't step on the mounds, the almond joys are OK. :-o

If you really want to DO something about the fire ants, bring something (like Maxx) with fipronil in it and spread it around.  The trouble is that it takes a while to do anything.  No clue how Gryphon feels about spreading fipronil on the grounds.

Here's a link to the ECTA site - and on the home page is the letter from Joe Timney (president of the group) explaining a bit of the issue.  He states in there that you'll be given a map of the new requirements - when you arrive at the track no earlier than 9AM Friday.

I was hoping actually expecting to be able to camp out in the pits. last year it looked like there were people camping out, my whole trip was planned around that. Worst case there's always the Wal Mart, last I checked self contained campers are welcome in their lots. What about check in Friday if it's raining?

Camping has always (I think) been allowed in the pits - at least as long as Nancy and I have been going to meets there.  But - remember, the rules are all changed now thanks to Gryphon.  Again -- if you've got questions that can't wait 'til the meet, get in touch with Joe Timney.  His contact information is available in the members section of the Forum.  And 'til you hear it from Joe -- don't take anything for granted just 'cause it was so last year.  Wal-Mart is a fine option - and you can do your shopping while you're there.  There's a Subway shop in the store, so that'll take care of your eating needs.

Received great news today the torque converter has been rebuilt Dynamic Racing Converters dropped everything to get this taken care of. A one day turn around its just unbelievable thanks Harold. The Lakester will be back together by Tuesday evening. No time left for a dyno pull so the Maxton Monster Mile will be the dyno. If it wasn't for my son Ron this would not have taken place his help is making this look easy hes one heck of a crew chief. So our Ford flathead V-8 powered Lakester will be running trying to add a few more MPH to the record.

The Duc is not looking likely to be ready as the body is still on loose with cutting and mounting needed and I don't feel like pulling her from her spot on the racks and putting her back together again just to get back in line for the rack to start over.  The screen from Gustufson is also unlikely to show here before Friday, so.... the Ninja 500 is now prepped and maybe I can bump her record and get a record in the books with the new team name.  I may even need to stick a slightly smaller expert bike jockey on her and get the record even more respectable.

Hey Dean,  I will try to remember to bring my Duc's front fender so at least I can see if the mounting points on your extra are going to be reasonably close.

Its a go the Lakester is running again  :-) My test pilot Ron Jr also known as the Crew Chief left two nice black tire trails from an off idle launch the lines continued into second gear the torque converter works GREAT. The team at Dynamic Racing Converters are first class. This time it took less than three hours to put everything back together were getting faster each time. Maybe this time it will stay together for more than a week  8-)
That's great news about the Kowalski banger Lakester the workman ship on the car is amazing. Fitting so many parts in such a narrow package is a very hard job I thought our drop tank body was narrow the Kowalski car is even narrower.
  Maxton here we come.

I used to stay at the Hampton Inn in Laurenburg and it was nice.  I have a RV at the  Sleepy Bear Campground in Lumberton so I have been staying there the past few years.  It is an easy ride down 74 to the track and I know all the places to eat, drink and shop so it works well for me.  Not looking forward to relocating the rv if/when we lose Maxton next season.   :-(

I talked to Joe Manis (Manis Manufactured Homes) and he has given us the OK to park on his airport property where we have parked for the past few years just off of Short Shutdown on the concrete pad, there will be plenty of room for those of you that want to also park in there, so ask at the gate to make sure nothing has changed and we can access the area in our normal fashion by the taxiways, as far as I know we will have a smaller than normal Blue Bird group there so there should be plenty of extra parking area, we have 6 'Birds waiting here in Dillon, SC that will be heading up to Maxton on Friday morning and at least a couple more coming that we know about.

We enjoy having company visit and join us, so either come park with us or at least drop on by.

Newbe question, is it allowed and or advisable to leave your race car and trailer (open trailer) at the track over night?
Title: Re: Maxton April Meet Whos Going?
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on March 30, 2011, 11:27:09 AM
Yes, it is allowed to leave your stuff overnight.  In the past there was "unofficial" security, in the form of a good number of folks that'd camp out at the track.  However -- last year or so there was some thievery and vandalism of stuff -- and therefore "real" security forces were contacted to provide more and better security.  I presume that force will be there this year -- but don't take any unnecessary chances.  Make sure things are put away and well-locked, etc.

Definitely going to be there but sadly the "replacement" car isn't ready. I was wondering if any of you kind and generous and wonderful and outstanding folks might consider sharing a little (very little) seat time as my wife's new car isn't ready for this meet. She would keep it  under 125mph as she does not have her licence yet and we (I) would be more than willing to help share some costs. She is jonesing real bad and I will have to listen to it all weekend. Please help.  :-)

heading out the door to go south!   Forecast is clear but 20 mph winds from the west saturday could make things interesting.  Not sure what the cutoff is for crosswinds.  Sunday looks better as seems to have been the pattern over the past few years.  Duc was not ready so the 500ex is on the trailer.

On a side note,  I have been wondering about the use of Twitter for posting Land Speed results.  The tag #LSR is used by the German community for who knows what but as far as I can tell no one has used either the tag #LSRNEWS or the account @LSRNEWS both of which are easy enough to remember.  It is easy to set up to follow an account an always see the latest messages.  If Slim is real adventuresome he could set up an automatic follow 'pane' on the homepage here similar to the one linked below for PA Sprintcar News which follows a list of accounts.  Some junk but mostly good race updates on weekends.  Anyways, just a thought.

Note - the twitter pane is on the left after a short scroll down.

Milton,
Both Don Smith & I have done tweets from the track when we can. The trouble is hearing what's going on & having the time to post it. There's a few west coasters here that get my facebook & twitter feeds and usually cross post to this board. It's a good idea but without someone "on staff" for regular updates it would probably be a wasted effort.

I'm slightly under the weather at the moment and a tad rusty on my two wheel riding so there's a good change I'll only be piloting the pit bike this meet. If that's the case I'll try to make some updates if anything exciting occur rs.

See all y'all tomorrow.

Debbie

Just thinking it may be easier for folks to tweet them in versus entering posts directly to the forum.  Of course it would be great if someone was converting them to forum posts.  No rush intended as I was thinking more towards speedweek.  Should be easier to tweet in stuff via phones theoretically.  A little damp down here but hopefully the rain will get out of by morning.

Nancy and I will not be at Maxton this weekend -- so I won't be able to give any kind of on-the-spot coverage.  You're all invited to send stuff to me -- good runs, photos, etc -- and I'll post them as I can get 'em onto the site.  If someone will send me a run log at the end of the day (Deb, maybe you'll be able to help out here) I'll get that up for all, too.

Day started nice ... 47 degrees and sunny ... 0830 drivers meeting and discussion about future events. There are about 100 entries. Probably 50 bikes and 50 cars. Dave Freiberger and Hot Rod Magazine crew are here. Racing started a little after 9 with some good runs early ...I was done at the starting line and didnt get the speeds for the first 25 or so. The Jaguar XJ6 with big block Chevy motor went 195. Then the first oil down and subsequent cleanup occurred. Followed by winds picking up to 20 mph, direct cross wind. After an hour it slacked to 15 mph and racing commenced again with a 125 mph limit. So license passes or vehicles limited to 125 mph ran. Then the second oil down and subsequent clean up occurred. When this was completed the wind was blowing 30 +. After a long wait at 2:20 the plug was pulled and racing was halted until tomorrow. My brother Tom has to work tomorrow so we are packing up for the ride back to New York right after the 2010 Awards Banquet.
