Title: Nitro and ethanol
Post by: robfrey on July 13, 2009, 04:21:44 PM
Does anybody know if these mix and stay mixed naturally? IE does nitro dissolve in ethanol like it does in methanol?

Howdy,  :-D

Nitromethane and Ethanol are readily miscible. 8-)

Guess that the more important question is why would you want to use an alcohol that has less energy than Methanol which has a much more reliable history for comparison as a spark ignition engine fuel.

HB2 :-)

Thanks Harold. I didn't have time to respond earlier and had the same question.

It will basically be an issue of fuel system size. We will be running gasoline this year and I'm buying way more pump than I need but it will not be big enough to go methanol next year. It will definitely be okay with ethanol though. I'm thinking just going with a small percentage of nitro as it will still make more power than gasoline. We will make 1800hp plus this year on gasoline. You can make the same power with ethanol as methanol but we will need an intercooler which we already have for running gasoline. Ethanol does not take the heat away from the charge air as well as methanol but it is better than gasoline. We also have some sponsorship possibilities if we can run ethanol effectively. E98 ethanol is good stuff. Nice big tune window also.

That's a big HP number, what type of vehicle/engine do you run

We will be running AA/BGL with twin turbo (GT4718) 540BBC. This is a pretty common build in the NMCA type racing and well proven. It will of course be detuned to 1800hp to keep alive for five mile. This combo could make over 2350hp at sea level for short periods of time.
Here are some pictures of the build.

This year will be gasoline. I'm just planning on next year. I'm sorry, I should have been more clear. I'm upset that we won't be ready for Speedweek. We are currently planning on being at the USFRA meet in sept.
