Title: Blimp
Post by: RichFox on April 21, 2009, 08:15:49 PM
Today when I was driving home from Studebaker West. heading north on 101 about 500 feet up over the south bound lanes and heading south was a blimp. Not some little advertising blimp. A real big full size blimp. Big sucker. Blew me away. I'm told it's from Moffet Field and stays in the big hanger there. Thats what it was built for. Been a real long time since we used to see Navy Blimps going out on submarine patrol. Weird.

In WWII no US ship was ever torpedoed while being escorted by a blimp . A guy I know has a deal where for a fee you go to his place in Vermont and with his guidance sew and weave your own hot air blimp .

That blimp is built by the Zeplin company.  Yes, the same ones that built the most famous of blimps.  It is a private deal by Airship Ventures http://www.airshipventures.com/ and they use the hanger at Moffet Field as a base.  They take tourist around the SF Bay area for a fee.  I have seen it for the last few moths on the weekends and I think they just received their air certificate for passenger service.  In their press release last year they were planing for a fleet of them.  Just what we need in the SF Bay Area more Hot Air.

At a cost of $495 for one hour, or only $950 for two hours. I guess I will never know what it is like to fly in a Zeppelin.
