Hey it's been pretty quiet for a few weeks now. Lets have some company tonight. It's to cold and dark to be in the garage working anyway. It's time to catch up on stuff. Builds, Bonneville, El Mirage, Maxton etc.

Yeah, I didn't show up. So shoot me, hey? I've got Nancy to think of - and take care of...
So -- it's been mentioned that maybe I should change the time of the Tuesday night chat to a little bit earlier -- like 8.30 PM Eastern time (that's 6.30 PM Mountain time, 7.30 PM Central time, and 5.30 Pacific time. I don't know what it is in Eastern Australia time).
Any pro or con comments? I'd be for it if it were only up to me -- but then, I've only logged into the chat a couple of times. Most likely that's because the 9PM is sorta late for me (we commonly go to be around then). Let's have some discussion, but remember -- chances are that if the Chat Time gets moved -- someone won't like it and will blame me for messing up his Tuesday evening. Cut me some slack, okay?

No one likes change, no matter what. It's not even fun with the switch back and forth of daylight savings time but I'm glad it's done. My vote (if there is such a thing or if it matters) is to keep it the same time.

Well, that won't make it any earlier for me -- just more likely that I'll know when it's on so I can ignore it. Maybe I'll have to poll those that do use the function -- to see who's on California time and who's on Virginia time. I understand that having it start at 5.30PM might be kinda early for some folks -- getting home late from traffic, for instance.
I'd type more now but the snow's falling and I get to brave it all the way out to get the newspaper.

The new shop is about done, I can see the finish line. The painters will be done tomorrow afternoon. The Electrician will be done and get Final Inspection on Friday. The driveway was graded and formed up today. Once the temp goes up in the morning the 40 yards of concrete should be poured and finished at best all of it tomorrow and at worst they will do the parking pad tomorrow and the driveway Friday. The Garage doors install Monday morning and then the power company said Mon or Tue for the meter delivery and turn on.
I will post some pics late Friday or Sat...

Glen, they are in my new shop doing that fancy Diamond Polishing to the floor,, I should be on tonight if they get all the cutting done tonight. It is a step process, Diamond Cut, then polish ,then seal... Hope they get all of step one done by chat time.

Lynda -- please understand that it's simple sleepiness that keeps me from the chat room - most of the time. Especially last night, for instance. Nancy had to be at Lowe's at 6.30 this morning -- meaning a 5.25AM get-out-of-bed time. And being the nice husband that I am -- I get out of bed before she does so the coffee is waiting, the lights are on, and so on. I'm enjoying this no-job status and the amount of sleep that I'm now able to get -- so staying up 'til past 9PM to chat online with a bunch of you yahoos takes second place to lying in bed next to Nancy in the evening.

This time I've got a better-than-usual excuse for missing the Chat line. Nancy and I are going to hear a presentation made by a local veterinarian -- that ran in and finished the 2009 Iditarod sled dog race. He's a friend, too -- so I'll have good stories to tell, tomorrow, of what he says it's like to stare at the hind-end of a bunch of dogs for 1,100 miles. But the presentation is at 7PM EDT -- we won't be home during the chat. Oh, well -- as usual, don't say anything too scurrilous about me.

Lynda, you might get your internet service the way we do -- with a cellphone internet USB card. It plugs into the 'puter and uses the cellphone system to provide the signal. We use it in the house, on the Salt, even in the vehicle as we're riding down the road. I've told others about it, like Freud -- and some already have it. Jon Amo had the system when I bought the site -- that's how I learned about it.

OK I will try this again. 6:15 in Idaho MT (daylight savings time). One quick question, just where is the "quiet zone" at the bend. Or is this just something to mess up old guys that need sleep?

:-D The "quiet zone" as Ray the Rat calls it is up the hill about a half mile from the bend in the road. It's also known as the old dump site. Not to many people camp up there and so it is quieter at nite. One thing you gotta watch out for tho is the ground up there is very silty and if it gets wet, your stuck unless you have 4 wheel drive. Also, some people camped near me last year had a rattle snake come into their camp! Crow

You can play with all of those buttons & just hit preview to see what it does.

Glen emailed me yesterday to comment on a glitch he had with the chat line. I tried signing on this morning -- no troubles. I'm having bob take a look anyway - just to make sure it's only Glen that's having trouble. Let me know if you can't get into it.
We're having a busy time of it what with getting ready to open our new store. I've never had a retail business -- so am kept hopping. All of this means that as usual - I won't be on the chat tonight.

The problem is only on my lap top. When I try to get into chat it tells me I need a Java plug in. I have tried everything to reinstall Java and it tells me to do a manual install and that fails as well. The computer has had a full up grade and more ram, it windows XP. Any ideas??? I use Firefox as the browser and IE so I am at a loss. Only the chat is effected.

And that is how the sickness began in my computer, Glen. It finally ended in being sent to the hospital for transplant and repairs. Of course, mine was a Mac, so it might not be the same thing!! Hope to see you in the chat room tonight.

Three AM Wednesday morning in Eisenstadt, Austria. That's where my dad lives. He probably won't be online -- but I thought I'd let you know the tie difference. My sister lives in Berg, Switzerland -- I forget the time differential to that town.
And my sister-in-law lives in Juneau, Alaska -- where chat will be at 6PM this evening ( I think).
We live in Skandia, Michigan, where Chat is at our bedtime -- 9PM EST. Probably won't join, as usual -- gotta get ready to do a show-and-tell about Seldom Seen Slim LSR for a local club tomorrow night. Pictures, videos, trophies, all that stuff. I think I'll take one of my "souvenir" buckets of salt (I keep the stuff that's still on the truck/trailer when we reach home, for ice melting).

Lynda, I've got about 5,000 photos from racing - on this computer alone. It's taken a while to winnow out the not-so-super ones and I've so far got about 132 (about? That's exact!) chosen and on a thumb drive.
I'm not going to tell you who didn't make the final cut -- but here's one that certainly WILL be shown. The audience tomorrow night is the Marquette Range Engineers Club -- a bunch of professional engineers and other technical folks. They won't know what's wrong with this photo. Do any of you?

As usual -- I've got a good reason to not be on the chat line tonight. At 7 this evening Nancy and I are doing a show-and-tell about our land speed racing efforts - at the local public library. We've got photos, of course (of each one of you chat regulars -- so don't worry we'll be talking about YOU!). I've got a few videos, including a couple of passes of the Burkland 411 car and one of the Speed Demon (and a few showing roadsters in their natural surroundings -- that is, spinning).
A few trophies, a bunch of wall plaques, a set of leathers and a helmet (so the folks can see the safety gear we wear), my 200 MPH Club certificates, and so on.
It's amazing how many people around here know of us and our "adventures". Remember -- I always write a story about the event we've just attended and send it to the local newspaper. By gum -- some of these folks know how to read, because we seldom walk through a store or down the street without someone stopping to ask if we're the couple they always read about. It's cool -- and will work for you if you want the public exposure. Not so good, of course, is what happens when you (as I did just this morning) walk into the insurance agent's office and ask for some kind of coverage and he asks if I'm the guy (and so on). Then he proceeds to tell me how his company would love to have my business but there might be a surcharge because of our dangerous (?) hobby.
Whatever -- tonight at 7 at the Peter White Public Library, Marquette Michigan. Free admission. Be there or be left out.

Surprise, I'm heading out with him right now. You guys obviously don't quite get it. He lives outside 24/7. The colder it is the better he likes it. The problem comes when he decides that he hasn't been out for his daily outing and he starts scratching at the back door. It doesn't take long to wear out a door. This is a 100 pound Alaskan Malamute who obviously runs the household.

Hunh? -- about the "main link on the home page" for the Chat Line. Bob's been working to clean up little stuff on the site, including the links page - which had lots of dead links. I know he knows about the Chat Line and wouldn't disappear it on purpose. If there was - I hadn't noticed it, always going to chat via the links page.
Do we need to have the Chat Line lik in plain sight on the home page - or is it okay where it is today?

Unh, how 'bout this one:
I planted the seeds in the garden yesterday and day before. Two rows of Swiss Chard, one of Spinach, two of Carrots, two of Beets, one of Beans, and one of Peas. Nancy gets off work at 6 tonight - should be home by 6.45. We'll be busy harvesting the veggies - at least I should hope they're ready to pick tonight. And once they're picked they've got to be cleaned and frozen.
I don't think we'll be able to get all of that done in time for me to be able to get to the chat line, but I'll sure try.

Since Nancy and I are ensconced in our room at the Quality Inn in Wendover -- we're not "in town". Does that mean I'm excused from having to list a reason why I'm not on the chat line tonight? Who knows, though -- if we're done with our fine dining experience in Wonderful Wendover -- I might just show up for the fun of it.
By the way -- it's in the mid-80s here, winds are about 15 mph from the south, and folks are starting to show up. Judy and Prozac got to the motel a few minutes before us, and as Nancy and I were at about MM 28 on I-80 westbound, east of Wendover, we started hearing the course-dragging crew chatting on the CB (channel one, everybody).
Best news of all: Dustin, the foreman from United Waste Services, has called me to let me know the porta-potties will be arriving tomorrow late morning. It's a heck of a note -- I keep the toilet guy's phone number programmed into my cellphone. Who would've thunk it'd ever come to this?

Once again I'll miss the chat. I'm getting my stuff I left in Ogden and am headed to my new abode in :-o gasp... Wendover!!! I got an apartment there, now all I need is a confirmed job instead of.....we're going to be hiring, do you want the job when we do?....thing! :roll: Anyway, it has been wonderful being on the salt for the past 3 weeks, I may have finally gotten enough salt in my blood to last most of the winter, if not, I'll just cruise out the 7 miles and remember all the records set this year, all my friends that were there, and dream of next year when I get to greet everyone again!!! It has been an historic year, thanks for sharing your dreams with me!!!

Google SEMA show and I think the info is there, I am with a feature car (Vesco's) so we had passes. I think the cut off date for tickets was a couple of weeks ago, Heard they were $75.00 at the door and needed to be a company rep or something.

Speaking of tonight's chat -- I mangled the tip of my left index finger on the table saw the other night ("You idiot, that's why there's a blade guard on it!!") and won't try to be on the Chat line tonight -- I can't type fast enough for my tastes. So do without me, as usual. We've done another few dozen Willie badges today and will get the raw materials for a big batch in tomorrow's UPS shipment -- so there should be a good amount of them at the banquet this weekend.

After seeing some of those old photos I would agree Mark. He was quite the dapper dude. Not to take away from any of his still very distinguishable senior manly elegance. How about a guy named Terry Prince from Australia, who caught the racing bug back in 1950 and is still at it today. Terry is one of those inspirational guys like the legendary Marty Dickerson.

In 1950 when Terry’s father took him, then 12 years old, to watch the Brighton speed trails, where George Brown was riding his Vincent-powered special, NERO. It was a day that was to affect the rest of young Terry’s life.
At the age of 16 Terry bought his first Vincent that he still races today. This Londoner embarked on a life’s work of engineering and manufacturing high performance parts for Vincent motorcycle racing.
Terry was an engineer for Fritz Egli, where he helped to create the Egli Vincent. The TPV was inspired by those machines.Now living in Australia for the past 30 years Terry owns and operates Classic Motor Bikes a high performance shop that people from around the world get their parts for racing.

It must be great to be retired for real, Glen. I thought I was -- then we bought this laser engraving business. "Back to Work, JON!" is the mantra now. The heck of it is that I was very good at being retired -- got all of the chores done, didn't fall prey to the TV or the bottle, Nancy and I were happy. We're still happy and that stuff -- but now I'm gone from home about 8 hours Monday through Friday.
I hope to retire again soon. In the meantime -- if I stay up that late I'll try to remember to join you folks.

Yup, Rob and I got in and then could not get this site to open. The trick is to BOOKMARK the chat in your favs, that way you can get in there if this site is not working. The chat was fine if you had the address already. We solved most of the Worlds problems last night! :-D

The other comment is that I'm putting together a move to a different server company. This one was great when we signed up - at about the same time that Jon Amo sold the site to me. It's (or was - I don't check it) the server that hosted Hayabusa.com, too. But - we've had enough of the durn outages that I'm fed up and searching around for the next place. Bob (web elf, "trialsguy"), has a candidate in mind, so thanks, but you needn't offer too many suggestions on where to look for a new home. :-)
Worse than just the site being down - is that Nancy and I have both our personal site and our email through the same server farm, meaning that my email goes dead during the outages - and that means I can't receive your notes that the site is down. :oops: :-) Gotta fix that, preferably with a new host. I'll keep you appraised of the situation.
Remember that a move will take a few days to set up and then a few days to "migrate" to the new place. But - the good news is that I'm working on it. :-)
