This one has been on my mind for a while now. I have set my sights on, what I consider to be, "The Big One". :)
Mr Elrod's AMA: 3000-A-AF 1977 record, set at 188.006mph.
Do I think I can get it? Probably not. :-o
But what I am doing is video-documenting the build process, culminating in capturing my record attempts at BMST 2021!

Fran, would you like me to move this to the Build Diaries section?
Remember we are all old, so when you post a utube you might want to just write a little about what is happening and post it in you build here.
And are you aware Tom kept racing at SpeedWeek where his AMA record was set but he ended up with a faster BNI record in class 3000 A/F at 196.957... because the AMA stopped doing LSR for a couple of decades....
That is actually "the big one" for fuel.... 200.022 got Tom in the club in Gas class...

A suggestion, if you have not picked engines, is to use water cooled ones with downdraft ports. The old sidedraft port motors with fins cannot produce competitive power.

Bo both of those were set by 1981... kind of pre water cooled down draft... but of course a couple of Hayabusas might get ya down the path....

Since BMST is "home" for me, I'm going to chase this record for a little while in the AMA, but this build will be my "excuse" to finally attend SpeedWeek. :cheers:
My previous builds in "Classic" didn't have a fit over there, so - end game for this build- is to simply attend and "compete" at SpeedWeek, those are some lofty speeds to shoot for.

Do you have any way to contact Mr. Elrod? I had heard rumors on the internet that he was still attending The Texas Mile up to a few years back? I'd love to get in touch with him and hear some stories. It's amazing how fast he went on the technology available at the time! 8-)

Race budget and lack-thereof is my deciding factor. Guys are almost giving away Yamaha FJ1200's, so I was lucky enough to pick up 2 of them, complete and running, for a song.

I respectfully disagree that a finned motor can't produce the power... since Tom set the records with them. I honestly feel like I'm "cheating" by not using an air-cooled motor, but I simply lack the cash to build up a pair of GS1100E's to the same power output that the stock FJ1200's put out. The "problem" with going with two motors is always going to be twice the expense. If I had the budget, I think a pair of warmed over 1260cc (or even 1327cc) engines would be sufficient... but what I learned last year is that it's getting useable/controllable power to the Salt that's the challenge. :evil:

Haha - so that has been a running "joke" with me.
Why not just build up ONE Hayabusa motor and just have pistons and a crank in an otherwise empty 'Busa case?
That'd get me where I need to be... but where's the fun in that? lol8

I am enjoying every bit of this build.
Making videos, getting back to basics with the pencil & paper as well as learning how to animate stuff. Right now, all my passions are overlapping and I'm learning more and more. Let's hope, come August, I've learned enough!
