I never built LEGO stuff - I bought it for the kids in my family. Then this Christmas, my eldest nephew bought me a LEGO Record Racer.... this...
https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/60178-1.jpg
I built it in less than an hour. But my mind kept looking it over.... and I said, it's not SCTA rulebook legal (and other problems I won't go into here).
Pretty soon I had purchased 5 more of the same kit, plus 2 little dragsters (for the motors), a boat, and 2 different jet airplane kits - 11 in all. I used the canopy from one jet, and the pilot from the other because he was wearing a 5 point safety belt rig like a salt racer. I kept doing trial runs, fitting parts together and building sub-assemblies. I finally took the plunge and purchased 2 pounds of mixed LEGO bricks and commenced to sorting into types, shapes, and colors.
I spent an hour here and an hour there, and finally decided - build the Dodge thing and get it out of my system. Here's what I ended up with.... a lakester about 16 inches long, 2 inches wide at the rear hubs, and 2.75 inches tall at the tip of the fins. It's got chute tubes, a pushbar, blower motors, and fire from the headers... About all I lack to make it salt legal is a roll cage. I don't like how the canopy doesn't fit flush, but I can't do anything about it now.
It's not great, but it's done - and that's the important part. Now I have $100 in mixed parts leftover - getting rid of those soon before I start building again. The wheels really roll, and there is about a fat business card of room under the bodywork. Would it pass tech, and make fast passes down the salt? Who knows?
Enjoy.

You do know, aircap, that this is preparatory for building the real thing.

Well, John - If you want to foot the bill and drive the car, you have my blessing!

And maybe confined to the house for too long...

Enjoyed the story. I'd like it even better if my old steam-powered machine would let me see the results. Says I need a certificate or something.

5.A.2
Tread width is optional so long as no part of the body or axle fairing is wider than the narrowest inner vertical plane of the rear tires.

Very cool

So I need to shave off the axle stubs sticking out past the rims? I can do that.
The next widest part of the car is the exhaust dumps, which are about .050 narrower than the tires....

Already happened, Chris. Now it is your turn.

You need to narrow the body or lengthen the axles.

I think this LEGO is about all I can afford on Social Security.... :-D

Gotcha. Can do.
