Title: BUB7 - Valerie Thompson
Post by: TrickyDicky on August 02, 2016, 08:23:53 AM
According to Mike Cook's Land Speed Shootout Facebook page, Valerie Thompson is currently getting up to speed with the BUB7 'liner.

Another contender for the outright two-wheel record?

The Bub #7 held the record just before Rocky in the Ack bike, and after that the further development kinda slowed to a crawl.  There's most likely a good bit left to be discovered and used in the bike, for sure, and Valerie is a fine pilot, from what I know, to be the one that's trying to move the bike along towards 4+.

An the training time - the tows and all of that - gotta be great at Mike Cook's T&T time.  A decent track, nobody to wait in line for, and so on.  Best wishes and have fun, Valerie.

Best wishes from here too.

Good to see that bike is active, I was wondering if it would every be on the salt again.

Since that scooter is out and about again, I assume that the ownership is known as well?  Not long ago, no one would talk about where it was, and in who's hands it was in.

Wow!  Didn't Denis Manning value it at $10M at one time?  Although he indicated he would be prepared to cut a deal . . .

If V.T. Now Owns BUB7  , I hope it gets a better paint scheme, Kinda Bland,
I mean compared to , The Harley Streamliner & The NORTON Streamliner
OK, Maybe, Just paint it orange...................................................

Valerie is a super gal.  Went through my rookie program at the salt and at El Mirage.  I keep tabs on everyone that went through my program and I enjoy seeing people progress in our sport.  Best wishes to her and her new endeavor.  Regardless of the paint color, keep it shiny side up Val.

Best idea is wait till you ride it a few times before you paint it....

Can't think of a single streamlined bike that has not been down.... it is not easy to learn to ride one.

The bike seems to have largish primer patches on both sides (NOT saying that they're new).

Man, That is sooo true, Take note readers, Sr Members Know so much more...
Just from being around longer, Hate to admit it sometimes, I write something , Then read the next day what a Guy Like Stainless says
And them its,, Arrggh I should have thought about that...
Age does not make up for years on the salt, As in , Even if I was Older and Wiser, Guys that have been there more, Just know..
From now on Im going to try and think, In salt years, Stainless1  65, But salt years , I cant guess, But id bet it all 10+ years ?
20+ Years ??
P.S.  I meant that in a Good Way,,, Not a Smart Arse Way
So, Here is an idea, When Valerie is ready, And up to speed, She should put a Hmm,, Updated Paint scheme on BUB 7
You know, Lines, Like on ACK Attack, Or Gold Leaf Like Danny Thompson put on the Challenger II
Wait, My Favorite Streamliner, When Max had the Vincent All Black With just the name Vincent on the side..
OK, Maybe I shouldnt post so late a night anymore....................................

DRW, only been racing Bonneville since 1978... although I worked on my first Bonneville car in 1972, just a kid compared to a lot of guys still racing out there that were seasoned (pun intended) veterans when I started.  I always look forward to seeing my old friends.
I agree one of my favorite liners has always been Max's Black Lightning.

Back to subject, good luck with the quest Valerie, you will be among an elite few that can ride an enclosed bike. One of the pics below had a pic of the first female to enter the 200 MPH Club, riding the bike... and a couple of other streamliner riders  :-D
Yep, the paint is skinned on that bike... a very experienced Don did it, not Marcia

Since the ink on my arm tells me I am sort of a Triumph fan, this photo that Valerie just posted on the Face Page is kind of a big deal to me...

Good luck racers!

Combined they have about 100mph of speed in a streamliner on the salt..

As long as they don't ride over their heads both of them will do fine I am sure.

Guy is a great racer and if the bike is willing he will make Triumph happy.  Valerie is good racer in LSR and Drag racing, the Bub 7 streamliner is a proven machine.  She will have a tough time filling Chris's little however impressive shoes.  :)

Good luck to all!

Looks like Valerie and the team are making sure they aren't running before they can walk. Glad to see them being safe and slowly picking up the pace. Letting Valerie get more seat time before they go for bigger speeds is a good thing.

First thank you for all the support!!!!  I have a great team behind me and it's GO TIME!!!  After our official 304.263 mph we will attempt a shot at the overall record mid October.

Howdy, young lady.  I saw that you'd registered -- and wanted to welcome you to the gang of idiots that hangs around here.  First warning -- fill out your profile page with your location - or I'll put one in there for you.  I assure you -- you'd rather fill it in than let me at it.

Good that you've got the bike over 300 already this year.  Be careful!  but - have fun, too.

Congratulations, Valerie!  I haven't figured out how you steer a bike streamliner when you can't lean!

Koncretekid, I asked the same of Sam Wheeler a few years ago. He told me that when you turn the bars to the left and don't lean your body the 'liner will automatically lean to the right and go that way. So I asked "How do you make your brain do that?" He said it's simple. To turn right, you push the right bar. To turn left, push the left bar.  Wayno

Valerie,

You have yourself one heck of a ride there, congratulations on the progress you and your team have made so far.

We are not only racers here, but fans of other LSR participants that work hard to do the best they can in the class vehicle they run.

I hope you the best , and remind you to take your time to go fast. Fast is great, but safe in even better.

I see that Valerie has chosen to end her participation and involvement with the Bub #7 bike liner.  I saw the announcement on Facebook, but I assume it'll be elsewhere, too, if you'd like to read the story.

I couldn't find anything yesterday (not being on Facebook), but there is news following up on a press release:

Bonneville Salt Flats, UT (Dec. 13, 2021) Ten-time land speed record holder Valerie Thompson announces, effective immediately, her separation from Denis Manning and the BUB 7 Streamliner Motorcycle team citing loss of confidence in the streamliner and designer Manning. Thompson has been piloting the former world-title holding motorcycle since 2016 and was Manning's top funding source for the team.

Considered the "world's fastest female motorcycle racer" after inking a 328 mph speed record, Thompson is an independent team owner/driver who competitively drag raced before focusing on land speed racing, eventually earning 10 Land Speed Records on two continents.

"We lost some essential crew members over the last few months," said Thompson about her eroding confidence in the project. "The remaining crew contacted me late last week with the sad news they had quit and removed all their tools from the Team 7 Racing shop. Without this 'super crew,' I'm highly doubtful about the performance potential of the BUB 7 to re-capture the worlds fastest motorcycle title. More importantly, I'm concerned for my safety. These are not just my team mates, they're my guardian angels."

Each of the departing team members helped extract Thompson from the BUB 7 wreckage after a devastating 363 mph crash on Australia's Lake Gairdner salt flats in 2018. "While I'm disappointed I won't be setting the fastest motorcycle record with Team 7 Racing, I'm heartbroken the crew won't see the results of their 36 months of painstaking re-building work. Each of them has volunteered countless hours in this quest. They deserve better," added Thompson.

Thompson remains the principal driver of the dual-engine Target 550 streamliner owned by Oregonian and veteran land speed race team owner Marlo Treit.  Treit's 43-foot, 9,000-pound speed machine is vastly different than the BUB 7 motorcycle. The team's goal is to break Tom Burkland's 415 mph World Record set in 2008. Thompson exceeded the team's testing goals on her first three test runs, clocking 218, 270 and 291 mph.

Does anyone remember this TV series? I loved that shot of the salt in the opening. Maybe that is what fueled my interest in Bonneville long ago.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xt1GdEv1bO8
