Title: July 2015 Meet
Post by: Stan Back on July 11, 2015, 09:02:40 PM
Real small turn-out.  Nice (for July) temperatures.  Wind today in the afternoon -- off and on.

We're starting 53 -- looks more like 25.

Dang, Tony has to work so we won't be running, I will be there to lurk though.

Well the July El Mirage meet is generally a smaller turn out as it can be very hot and some folks would rather save their stuff for Bonneville next month.
Anyway a good turn out, temps in the upper 80's, & not much wind! A nice day on the Dirt....

About a dozen records set by the usual suspects: Bill Latten, John Noonan, Jim Hogerhide, The Fergesons, with both 'liners too I think, and the Vintage Hot Rod 811 roadster.

I think Latten was running a Jimmy Stevens flathead on fuel in CC. Sounded real good, as did the Arden powered streamliner of the Fegesons. Noonan was running in an un-faired class and upped that record by a bunch. Any how, nice day at the lakes.

I was on patrol in the morning so this is all the pictures I got with my lousy point and shoot. Enjoy........ or don't  :-D

Oh, that's right. Brandon Leggett pitched a rod in Les Leggett's Studebaker the Beast early in his run catching fire and burning the 'chutes off the car. He stopped with no real problem and was ok.

Again my camera is not that great. The car is on fire here you just can't tell from my picture. When they were loading the car to leave you can see it is not to badly damaged.

I also added a picture of the 811 crew after drive Paul Bowman set his first ever record.
Last one is with Paul

You must have been standing right beside me when you took those last two photos... :-)

I'll post a few of my own.

Is it possible to post short videos here? I have one of the "push bar/chute" incident....

Bo, you can't post a video directly -- but you can do it by using one of the photosharing sites - like Photobucket.  That's pretty easy - and doesn't cost anything -- and I'm fine with you putting it on the forum.  I suppose you could put it on YouTube - but haven't ever tried that so don't know for sure what to do.

Not sure what was going on there, perhaps the truck was not the one they normally use for that car? The plate was too low relative to the bar, one of the guys jumped on it to try to bend it down but it didn't work and when they pushed off the bar rode over the plate and things went South as the chute got tangled. It deployed straight away and was fully blossomed within a few yards of the start...

The track announcer said that the run would be slow but at least it would be straight... :-D

No modification to the rule book necessary. I think they learned their lesson here.

Now I can see why the Mustang was in the "Impound" area Sunday morning.  I was surprised it was being "certified".

Stan,

Impound uses only one lane by the reg trailer. The Mustang was in the "you guys F'ed up" lane along with the no chutes, spinners, etc.

I just got this from Dan Warner.

Impound Insights - July 12, 2015

The inspection lines were greeted by mild, pleasant temperatures in the mid to high 80s on Saturday. It seemed that the lines were short, as it turns out the entry list topped out at 98 for the weekend.
There was one new member of the El Mirage 200 MPH Club. Aaron Hale drove the Hondata CRX entry in the H/BGCC class to a new record of 205.6. That is good work for an American driver who had to deal with the steering wheel on the right side of the cockpit. Last month I neglected to mention the Mike Cook Jr. has been elected as the new president of the EM200 club, dirty Twos as we are known. Good luck Mike, we have your back.

Meanwhile, back to the rest of the records. A total of 10 each for cars and motorcycle records were set. The I/FS class saw Jim Hoogerhyde driving the Costella-Hoogerhyde entry to a great 191 run. This present was given to Jack Costella on his 80th birthday. A rousing version of the happy birthday song was rendered by all who were present at the driver's meeting. Ed Fenn continues his march to 250 in the Fenn & Brisette B/GL entry. Ed once again ran a 237 record, slightly over last months record. Pete Aardema brought out the V4/BGRMR entry of Aardema Braun Sheridan. Driver Cal Rothe set a record 185.9 MPH, very impressive for a Model A banger. The Eyres family has been absent from impound for a while . Eric and Russ Eyres, Eric Eyers driving, ran in the E/BGR class this meet and bumped the record to 201.9. Last year's championship car, the C/AIR entry from the Vintage Hot Rod shop, made an appearance this time with new driver Paul Bowman at the wheel. Paul moved that record up to 175.9 making this a difficult class to compete in. In the Vintage Category the team of Lattin & Stevens set two records this time. The first in the XXF/VFCC class with SCTA President Bill Lattin doing the chores. The result was a new record of 181.8 MPH. The XF/VOT entry of Lattin & Stevens with Bill Lattin's son Billy Lattin driving reset the class record to 152.6 MPH. Jimmy Stevens provides the HP for both entries. The green coupe of the Cohn Jucewic Monza team ran in E/CGC this meet and driver Bob Jucewic set the record to 180.0. Bob also does the engines for this team. Derek McLeish set the H/BGMS record for the Team McLeish Bros. on his second run after breaking a chain in round one. The car ran a very fine speed of 182.7 with the chain intact.
Motorcycle impound saw much more action than last month. There were 10 new records set, the first in the 125-BG class by Team McLeish RS with Ralph LeClercq in the seat. Ralph added 7 MPH to last month's record, running 114.3 MPH. Billy Jahn rode the Jahn Bros./Tim Lewis Racing entry in the 125-P-P class. Billy recorded a new record of 97.5 MPH. Mark Summitt upped his record from last month riding the Woody's Aermacchi entry. Oh yeah- the new record is 114.698. Ralph Hudson once again brought his two Ironwood bikes out. This month only the 650-APS-BG entry set a record, 188.2 MPH. The 1000cc classes saw a lot of action this time. First is Jim Robinson on his 1000-A-VF ride setting the record at 142.9. Next was Dave Iverson resetting his one month old record in the 1000-SC-VG class riding his Dave Iverson Knuckle entry to 120.490. The Costella, Cunha & Bassano 1000-SCS-G streamliner ridden by Tim Cunha set the record to 176.368. A surprise birthday present for builder Jack Costella. the 1650cc classes also had three new records. Alphabetically, John Noonan's entry entitled Noonan "Daddio" Derwin ran in the 1650-A-BF class setting the top speed of the meet for motorcycles and class record at 237 MPH. Kenny Schaefer rode the Schaefer & Chambers 1000-PF entry to a new record of 193.004. Very close to the 200 MPH mark. Tom Foley was sitting next to the rig on the Foley Racing entry. Tom set a new 1650-SC-VG record of 125.7.
There is one motorcycle record pending certification.

Top Speeds of the meet were for cars:  Ferguson Racing   B/FS   244.699 and for bikes: Noonan Daddio Derwin   1650-A-BF   237.070.

Next up is Speed Week at Bonneville. Being a positive person, I hope to see everyone there. Yhe Next EM meet is Sept. 13. We can start the second half of the season and see who turns out on top of the championships
