OK - I've already done the searches of the site and think I have a plan, but welcome input.
One of the nights during speedweek, my wife and I would like to get out "away from it all" for a night of tent camping underneath the stars. We have hotel reservations as well - the tent deal is just going to be for one night.
One of the recommendations I've seen is for a road that heads north from the "Bend in the road" and then turns towards the northeast. Apparently, there are great views from that road, and primitive camping is allowed on that portion of BLM land (not on the salt flats, obviously).
I'm certainly open for any other suggestions, but thought that this road (does it have a name) might be a viable option. Opinions, please?

Steve, There is always a bunch of guys camped up there. The Bend is ok too. Either one is a good place too see the stars, although the Bend can get a little soupy if it rains.
I'll be in that general area for the duration of Speed Week. Look me up!

I'll agree that that road would be a fine place to camp. I don't know the official name of it -- but the signpost at the Bend points up the road toward the "T L Bar" ranch. We've been up there a bunch of times but never tried camping. Once you're over the crest of the hill I should think you'd be able to find lots of places to pitch your tent for one (or more) nights. I don't know how much the cops/BLM patrol up there but I wouldn't be too worried, especially if you don't camp right on the road per se.

Stop at the sign that describes the roads in that area. If you have a 4 wheeler
or a wife that likes to hike, turn right and view the "other salt flats." It will be
on your left. Continue until the road turns right again and after a few gulley
washes you can look down on the race course. That is the nude sleeping area. You
wouldn't even need a tent. I'd suggest a shovel and a roll away jack in case you get
high sided. You can build a bridge to get out and in that area clothing is optional.
It should work out well because you wouldn't want more than one night of it.
If you are stuck there during the racing hours it would be spectacular. Sound
goes up so well that it would be like you were in forbidden areas of the race course.
I'm just not that bonded to the outdoors and my wife would not take her feather pillows
out in that dust.

I'm always just a bit leery when another guy invites me to the nude sleeping area :-D.
I think I'll probably keep some clothing on, as I understand it gets chilly at night.
Thanks for the tips, guys - this trip is going to be a dream come true.

That's rattlesnake country. Just be aware and prepared if you need to take a walk to relieve yourself during the night.

I drove out to the bend last night about 11:00 and there was only 3 campers grouped together. Strange seeing it empty. Oh yeah no chance of star gazing with all the clouds.
-
I shot a full moon at the Nugget parking lot and only one flash went off.
