Title: Rental cars on the flats - what's the deal?
Post by: Track T-4 on July 11, 2013, 04:05:17 PM
We are making our first trip to Bonneville for Speedweek and need transportation.  I've heard some  (all?) rental car companies do not allow driving their cars on the flats.  So I'm wondering what people do who fly in for the week.  Do some of the companies allow driving their cars on the flats?  If, whch ones?

If you search "rental cars" on this site, you'll find perhaps 100s of comments on that subject.

They aren't apt to ask unless you are wearing a Speed Week shirt or ask directions to Wendover.

Ask for directions to the Temple.

Don't tell them Wendover is your destination.

Or - rent a U-Haul.

They have used rental trucks for track grooming in the past.

Rubber floor mats, easy to clean out, and they can double as a camper.

We had one last yr from the rental based at the Wendover Quality Inn (think its the Quality, last big one on right heading to Nevada )

was pre salted so they did not care, actually very poorly cleaned before we got it, brought some $2 sheets for seat covers  and gave it a good clean , gave it back much better than we received it,
seeing how salty it was i'm not surprised rental companys don't want to let you take things out there

We rent cars at SLC airport for support vehicles... Don't necessarily mention where we're headed with them.  Take a roll of duct tape and some trash bags and cover the floors so you can roll up the salt in the bag and return it to the track at the end of the week.  There is usually a guy at the end of the road with a tanker/pressure washer and there is a coin wash at the end of wend over near Pizza Slut.  There's also a nice truck wash just before getting back to SLC that will spray out the undercarriage.  They have a billboard on the freeway.

Enjoy!

Don't fly in to SLC in your racing t-shirt
The Dr. is right, ask for directions to the Temple
Buy some industrial trash bags and duct tape them to the floor. There is a Walmart not too far from the airport.
A good vacuum job
Wash the undercarriage and engine compartment... it takes more than a casual wash that salt gets everywhere and sticks to metal like crazy. It will take a bunch of quarters to get it clean.

The people that you hear stories about brought the cars back dripping in salt with floorboards full of salt.

I felt bad in 2011, I got a new Explorer with only 300 miles on it. Even had a trailer hitch for my race car tow bar... Gotta love Hertz!

As a bit more information, the Temple is where the Norman Nabbertwackel Choir performs there - as well as many members of the LDS Church.

Thanks guys, I had a "DOH" moment...my wife said she knew what the Temple is.

We're now all set for our virgin trip to the salt with airplane reservations, hotel and car.

In another thread it was suggested I should get a BNI membership so I would have a rule book, gate pass, etc.
Will the gate pass get me in all week and then I'll only have to buy a ticket for my wife to get in or...?
Or maybe there is no gate pass included?

There is an individual who posts (IR?)regularly on Landracing who will tell you the EXACT ins and outs of Salt Lake car rental, and may describe how to drive the rental car to the salt in REVERSE!

So I'm a little confused (nothing new  :-D)...
Is there a fee per person or per car to get onto the salt as a spectator to watch the races?  If so what is it?
It was my understanding spectators could walk the pits.  But is a pit pass necessary?
What is the BNI pass for - to get onto the salt, get into the pits or...?

Thanks.

There is a fee. The pit pass and the gate fee are the same thing.  Each person needs to buy a pit pass. I think they are $10 a day or $40 for the week and you get a nice pin. You may walk all around the pits with your pit pass. You may not drive around in the pits. It's bad enough with racers and race cars. And then there are the bike guys. It's really easy to understand what's going on when you get there.

At the end of the road you will need to buy a $40 pit pass-badge for your wife when you get there.  Good for the week. Landsendlynda, your GATE GODDESS  should have maps of where you can drive and park as a spectator. You can walk about any where you want, pits, starting line, staging line, impound etc. You will be allowed to drive between down course, pit, lunch wagon, and starting line spectator parking as it's miles between them. Just ask anyone questions.

Get it right guys, it's the Nabershnackel Chore!!!
and......

The BNI membership card means NOTHING to me and my crew!!!  The pin, on the other hand,  does!!!

Pit Passes        Adults $40 (good for the week)
                         Kids $20    ( ages 13-17)  ((18 is adult ))

Day Passes       Adults $15 (good for that day only)
                          Kids $10   (ages 13-17)

Children 12 and under are FREE   (So are pet critters!!)

I think most folks here know the name of the World Land Rental-Car-In-Reverse Speed Record holder. His 57 mph mark proved forever the fact a Ford Taurus in "R" at full throttle for five miles does not like having the radiator in the BACK.

I believe it's the same guy who taught Freud the ONLY way to wash a rental after a week on the salt.

I thought his suggestion of powerwashing the salt into the carpets was outstanding... it disappears instantly  :-o  The salt on the pedals is usually the give away...  while you have the wand in there, don't forget them  :-D

The good doctor explained to me that the best driving tip is to jam your knees against the steering wheel and make only very minor corrections.  Makes sense, but still scares me.

The carpet washing procedure was developed by the Amish in St Louis.

The principle was adopted in Wendover.
