BNI just reported on Face Book:
The Pre-Trip Team of Bill Lattin, Miriam Macmillan, Jim Dunn, Jim Jensen, Chris Douglas and Alastair Macmillan, has just arrived back from a 4 day trip to groom the salt in preparation for SpeedWeek. We were joined by USFRA members Larry Volk and Garry Wilkinson. The team found great salt conditions – nine plus miles on Course 1, eight plus miles on Course 2, five plus miles on Course 3 and four miles on Course 4. The depth of the salt varied considerably, but the 600,000 plus tons of salt pumped back by Intrepid this year, appears to have made a difference. Of course the weather conditions the salt flats experience in the next 40 days will play a big part in what we eventually get, but it is a good start. A huge thank you to the group who worked flat out for two days – 7am to 5pm, locating and marking courses, and dragging many, many miles. We also took the opportunity to touch base with lots of businesses in town, putting up posters, and continuing good public relations.
We look forward to seeing you all on the salt very soon.
Your BNI Board.

I wonder if there's anyone with more miles traveled on the salt than Jim Dunn (at least in modern times, so to speak). He's always driving up and down, back and forth, before and during events, and during the pre-event trips like this. Jim Jensen is probably a close second -- but Jim is one of the (many) unsung heroes out there. As a racer that enjoys being out there to take advantage of what this crew - and all of the volunteers do -- thanks very much. We'll see you on the salt.

Bob Higbee is the Champion - More years, more miles.
He instructed Jim Jensen, that is a condition if you marry his daughter. At his advanced age Jim Dunn will soon need a replacement.
WHO is ready to step up?

PS- Thank you gentlemen

WHO is ready to step up?
Dan, I'm not ready, but I'm certainly willing. I would love to help - unfortunately, proximity, a four-letter word and the cooperation of an otherwise very supportive wife stands in the way.
I keep trying to twist Kate's arm. "We should just move to Wendover and be done with it", is the argument I try to make. She just looks around the parking lot of the Rainbow and says, "Well . . . nnnnnnnno."
I spoke with a customer on the phone today who was just at Lands End yesterday. She told me it's dry, and she wished me luck.
This part of the program seldom gets the attention it deserves. Thanks to everyone for making this possible, and for doing it in such a way that the entry fees remain manageable.
4 courses again - that's very good news.
-
Thanks guys, it would not happen without you and the other volunteers.

Thanks to all the SCTA/BNI crew and others that prepare the salt and make this a "Can't Miss" Event.
Racers, Crews and Officials deserve our gratitude and appreciation, too.
See you on the salt.

Thundersalt's pictures give me "chicken skin."

Not my pics Freud. Off the B'ville 2013 facebook page. Just trying to help out by re-posting here.

Thank you fine gentlemen very much for all the hard work you've done and continue to do. I appreciate it.

Wow-just saw the pics and read about conditions. And four courses again! Thank you to all the people responsible for creating this venue. I couldn't have fun without it, see you all there. Tim

Just returned from 4 days on the salt prepping the Shootout course. Last year there were lost miles due to the lack of salt. Lost about 1 3/4 mile on the start end(highway) and approx. 2 miles on the floating mountain end. This year there is color(white, if that is a color) at both ends. Granted the salt there is not the best but, is in recovery. The ends were wheel packed and will set to cure for a month. The 2 to 11 miles sections were dragged and polished. This area will cure and just need minor touch up next month.
This good course will make for a very exciting Shoot Out in Sept. The whole lakebed is looking great for Speed Week, WoS and Finals.

Sounds pretty good Dan. I can't wait. Wayno

Any updates of this for us? Last I heard about 10 days ago there was still about 6" - 8" of water at Land's End.
-
Yeah, what's up? Anyone? :?

Pedro --
You should know. Way too early to be discussing this.

Here is the port of entry video cam which helps keep an eye on the local weather conditions (if it has rained recently you will see puddles and standing water in the foreground)
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/images/slc/camera/loopCams.php?camName=envpoe&numFrames=10
Looks like the wendover peak web cam is not active, have found several on line sources that show a 6 month old image pointing at the ground.

I got this note from Land's End Lynda last night:
Also, we're supposed to have more monsoonal moisture this weekend. The puddle is still puddling at Land's End, but who cares?!!! See you in 2 weeks...well, less than that now!!!

Any info about staying off the Shout Out course in & out of Speedweek.
-
Well, literally speaking -- you probably cannot avoid being on the international (that's the old name for the Shootout course) course some. It crosses the long course and even a bit of the first short course, at an angle. Don't worry about it - because the SpeedWeek courses are marked and you can't just mosey around out there on those - so you don't have mnuch opportunity to mess up the Shootout course.

Last night on local news here in SoCal they reported big storms coming up outta here into Vegas and continuing up in a north-easterly direction. Hope it doesn't put down too much water.

Look like it is raining there right now :|

Being a first time visitor to Speed Week in just over 10 days (and coming from the UK....and being a cricket fan) this talk of rain is quite common at this time of year. However, and please excuse my innocence here, what impact could a massive amount of rain have on Speed Week? I've read bits here and there about all the hard work put in by folks to get the salt ready, time lines checked etc and just hope that the salt can cope with all the forecast wet stuff.
-
The salt can be completely covered with water and they'll have racing two days later. (And the rain can come when not expected, too.) It can flood in town and miss the salt flats, and the reverse, too. The only half-assaccurate forecast MIGHT be when you're 100 miles away. And that can be wrong, too. We all take our chances every year.
-
Part of the challenge. Only those with years under their feet will not care, they will dry off their parts and take on the next event.

Just looking at the radar maps and prognostication here in Utah it says a chance of showers tonight the warm and dry through the 7th. Not bad. Wayno
