Title: Re-Certifying SFI Rated Products
Post by: jlmccuan on April 21, 2013, 01:29:06 PM
I was told that a Hans device which was out of date could be re-certed.  If this is correct, what about belts, firesuits, etc?

Yes, the head and neck device can be sent back to the manufacturer for re-cert. Same with belts.

At this time the SCTA does not require firesuits to be re-certified. They do inspect them to make sure they are correct for the class you are running and are clean, not torn, not full of oil or greese etc.

True that Hans devices can be sent back to mfgr.
I found that there are many approved re-inspection stations around.

If there is no SFI sticker, it may have to go back to mfgr for certification.
I had this problem as the Hans early units only had FIA stickers.

PS, to answer about other SFI expirations.
The rule book states dates and specifications on belts, blower restraints, arm/leg restraints and helmet dates.
As I understand something like suits are inspected for damage and servicablity, not dates.
As for H&N, I did not see any date expiration, I would have it re-certed just for peace of mind as a failure can be irreversable.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a recert on blower restriants is not needed. I thought the rule said SFI-type blower restraint, not SFI certified blower restraint?

It would appear that you are correct, I guess that I should have also mentioned that no matter what I say here, you get what you paid for.

Does a manufacturer paying for the SFI cert. always make for a better product?

Nope, but it makes a SFI certified piece for racing and the organizations seem to require that on a lot of stuff.

I say this a lot. Since I am a carpenter I hear "built to code" as a badge of honor. When built to code means the minimum accepted level. A "d" GRADE IF YOU WILL.. SFIs levels are just as bad, my windmill I am tilting is tha crappy cage padding most folks peddle that is SFI and so hard you could cut diamonds with it. Please talk to ISP or Orange Aid instead.
