Title: 2012 Salt Talks t-shirt "art"
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on February 08, 2012, 03:37:07 PM
It's that time again - to start getting things lined up for SpeedWeek and specifically for Salt Talks 2012.  Here's the story (in brief):  For years we'd choose the vehicles that went on the shirts that we sell at Salt Talks by looking through the build diaries and picking the vehicles that appeared the most and best out of all of 'em.  but since selling those shirts (and Salt Talks itself) are a fund raiser, last year it was suggested (Thanks, Stainless) that I auction all of the three or four locations on the shirt.  Highest bidder gets first choice, but since they're all on the front of the shirt (will be on the front this time, for sure) and so on.  But it doesn't matter too much where you end up - you'll be on there.

I'm going to try something different this year.  You all know Ray the Rat (I betcha you've seen his work, at least), and he's going to take the "winning" photos and customize the art on the shirt from them.  We've always had an outside artist do the artwork - let's give Ray's efforts a try.

By the also way, we'll make the shirts here at Kudos Laser Engraving.  We now can make full-color transfers of photos and all sorts of other art - so we'll do the shirts.  They're a bit higher quality than the traditional shirts -- these have to be mostly, if not 100%, polyester.  Think "UnderArmour".

So let the bidding to get YOUR car or bike on the next Salt Talks shirt.  I'll let the bidding go on for a couple of weeks, at least, so that most everyone will have seen this by the time it ends.  I'll also post a few reminders as time goes by.

Last thing:  We're getting a small order of landracing.com hats.  We're buying about 2 dozen, so don't use your hat budget 'til you see one of ours.

(bump).  The response isn't quite as good as last year - so I'm sending this post back to the top of the list.  Get your bids in - even if they aren't for a kilobuck - to secure for yourself a place in history.  Thanks

I guess we are doing this by PM auction?  It is hard to tell, you guys should speak up and step up.   I'll start with the same bid as last year, got me a nice spot on the shirt for my buddy's Free style ride... Wonder what I should try this time...
It's not about buying your way on the shirt, it is about immortalizing your or a ride while helping the website raise cash to keep going.... Don's 56 might look good on there.... it can be anything that has turned a wheel on the salt, or at Texas, or Maxton, or Wilmington, or Mojave, or Blackrock....come on... a couple of 130 Club cars, maybe a 36 HP challenger... this will be fun, let's not make Jon fidget too much, he can have this done before the last minute rush starts.

This is a SAMPLE only.  Here's Ray's first try at doing the art for the shirt.  Yes, that's him on by his 130 Club car.  The shirt will almost certainly NOT LOOK like this, but I thought that maybe showing you an image of where we're going will help Stainless get things going better.  by the way -- sure, send me a PM with your bid, although I'm wondering if I should open it to this thread so everyone can see where the price is.  Nah - leave it private for a while, at least.  Thanks Stainless.

I like the mountains as a background and the subjects on an angle give it life.

It would be excellent if the images that are presented are not total profiles or a profile and a 3/4 shot to

give the shirt designer a choice..

That too would add to the feel of the shirt.

Butt what the H E L L do I no?

Slim - you can do T shirts now ... ?
Title: Re: 2012 Salt Talks t-shirt "art"
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on February 12, 2012, 02:36:47 PM
Yes, Joe -- we can do shirts - and other things, too, like mouse pads and coffee mugs and big acrylic discs and so on.  We print them with full-color photographs, too -- not just silk screen, which will age and crack and eventually fall off.  This process is "dye sublimation" and it puts the colors right into the fabric.  The fabric has to be mostly, if not 100%, polyester - - think "Underarmor".  We did one for Jeff Brock (Bombshell Betty, the '53 slammed Buick).  go to Facebook and search for Nancy Wennerberg, then scroll down 'til you see the disc.  You'll recognise the car.  I'll see if I've got a photo here at the house - I know there's one at the store.

Send me a photo and I'll put it on your travel coffee mug and so on - or your t-shirt.  Thanks for asking.

Bump.

I'm surprised at youse guys -- last year we had a bidding war and this year -- not much interest at all.  Remember, one of the ways I get the $$ needed to keep the site running is through stuff like this auction.  Get your photo on the Salt Talks t-shirts - or forgive me when I try some other kind of fund-raiser.  Don't worry, though -- I won't be as bothersome as the beggars on public broadcasting.

well, I won't be on the salt this year, so I'm not putting in for a salt shirt photo.
but, I am putting a pittance in through my meager pay pal account.

I am on the site almost everyday.
I get answers to unasked questions, asked ?'s and learn quite a bit.
( there are times when I don't get answers.! ) I enjoy the hell out of it.

great site. that's my 2 cents for now and it will be more than that donated.

franey

anyone else? all are welcome.

Fred, you don't have to put your bike on the shirt with one of the winning bids.... you could put the Guppy on it, or the old twin engine, or your first Bonneville ride.... lots of options
I'm thinking Abarth... but I still have to win a spot first....
Get off your butts slackers, don't make me put some old slow something on the shirt.... or maybe I can win all three spots... Hey SSS I'll bid 100 for another spot, and 50 for the third  :-o

Ok, Flatcad Racing is in with a bid.

I'm thinking that instead of our car, we'll ask Tony if we can use one of his avatars!

Ah, that's better.  Good thing for you, Stainless -- I think you'd be on the outs with some of your racing chums if you got all the space on the 2012 shirt.

Thanks for the bid, 38F (boy, those'd be big, wouldn't they? :-o :-o)

Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on February 25, 2012, 10:20:21 AM
I think I'll call for an end to the t-shirt art auction -- for we've got at least three or maybe four bids.  The "auction" will end this coming Wednesday at midnight Eastern Standard Time (in other words, at the absolute end of February).  38Flattie, Stainless, Fred Vance, and Charles Venable are all in the running so far, in that order.  It'll take $151+++ to get on the shirt for 2012.  There's room for three for sure, and maybe four, vehicles on the shirt - so you'll need to beat the lowest bid to be one of the chosen.

Four and a half days remain, ladies and gentlemen.  Here's your chance to be famous (?) for the sake of landracing.com.  Thanks to all of you that have already bid.
Title: Re: 2012 Salt Talks t-shirt "art"
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on February 25, 2012, 02:24:27 PM
One of the bidders sent a note requesting that I list the apparent successful bidders before the auction closes, so I'll do that - this Wednesday around suppertime (for us that's 7PM EST).  He also upped his bid.

So comes next the question -- will we have three or four vehicles/whatever on the shirt this year?  No, I won't accept any photos of naked/near naked racers, so don't even bother me with one (well, if it's of a naked female racer you're welcome to send it to me, but then I'll have to ask how you got that photo of Nancy).  Any comments?  Sure, I might make a few more $$ for the site with four, but depending on the layout -- it might be crowded.  I guess time will tell what happens.  Four has been the standard, but last year it was three (plus Willie's tombstone).

Bid now, folks, and thank you very much.

Bump - - to remind you that you've got 'til Wednesday night to bid to get on the 2012 Salt Talks shirt.  I'll remind you that these shirts are sold to folks year 'round, not just at the picnic, and therefore your vehicle (or whatever, but not skinny butts, okay?) will be viewed in many locations.  Hey, even the guys in Australia-land buy 'em - you could be famous over there, too.

Dean, it'll cost you at least $176 to get into the game right now.  I've got three and a half bidders (I'd explain, but it's a secret ) in the running, though - I'll tell you that much.  Go ahead and offer a bid -- many of us would be happy to see you instead of Stainless' smiling crew.

Do you have a shot with everyone facing forward (dropped trousers as well)?  THAT one would be pretty tempting to have on the shirt for all the world to see !!!  OR- we could photoshop everyone's cracks horizontal and make smiley faces on 'em ???  Mmmm....maybe you should just come up with a second choice.

As for you, Sparky -- we'd be tickled pink to have a photo of just about anything you've built on the shirt.  Hey - how 'bout one of the CFD pictures -- the colors are bright, for sure~! :-o :-o

Darn - you figured it out, Fred. :-D  Seriously, we usually will check with the folks whose vehicles are on the shirt and make sure we have enough of the correct sizes for them to order extras for those friends and crew and all of that.  A handful of years ago, when the Phoenix was on the shirt, we needed something like 40 for the crew.  That's when we learned to ask.

It's too late, boys and girls -- the "winners" have chosen themselves.  One of them has not yet given me "permission" to announce who it is, one has but i don't remember just now, and the others bidders - are at the house on the list.  Sorry I can't tell you the whole story right now, but suffice it to say that this year we'll have no naked butts on the shirt (not even your crew, Stainless, even if you are the winner).

Golly-gee-whiz, you're anxious, aren't you?  Okay -- I don't remember who's in third place, but there are a pair of the bids at $500.  Those two are the top, of that I'm sure.  The next is in the $250 - 275 range, I think, but won't know 'til I get home and look in my carefully-scribbled notes.

What'samatta, Fred?  Gettin' anxious to see if you'll be on the shirt this year?

One of the bidders hasn't yet given me the okay to tell everyone who it is, but I can list the other three.

38Flattie, Stainless, and you are all in the "winner's circle".  Corngratulations.  Stainless says he won't be showing anybody's hind end this year, so we're okay there.  He's got a great idea for the art, and so does that unknown feller.  Butch is pretty sure what to send, and that leaves only you to come up with your idea.  Speaking, then, of the art, please send your art/photos directly to me AND Ray Buck.  He's doing the artwork for us this year and needs the photos ASARP so he can get to work.  We'll make the shirts in June or early July.  His email address in on his avatar part of the Forum.

If you're going to want a quantity of 'em (this goes for everyone, not just you, Fred) -- please make up a list of what sizes and quantities of each size you want so we can make sure we've got enough for your special order and for the regular buyers.

Thanks to all of you that bid.  It'll help the landracing.com website in general and the forum in particular to have this shot in the financial arm.

What do they look like ?  Well, before we can show you we need all of the folks who bid highest to send me (and Ray the Rat) photos or whatever or said vehicles.  I've got one out of four so far -- and that's from Stainless.  The others haven't showed up yet, but I've sent them remind/elbow-joggle notes a couple of times asking for their art.  Maybe they'll see this and realise it's time to get off their (collective) duffs and get the art moving.  Maybe then, after Ray has had some time to work on them -- maybe then you can see.  but don't expect that 'til June or so (see above reasons).  Nancy's looking right now - to see how much more the grey ones cost than the white shirts.  Remember -- this being a fund raiser we need to keep the "profit" margin as high as we can without raising the price too far over $148 each.

Edit a few minutes later:  She reports that the grey shirts instead of white ones will add about a buck to the price at which we can sell them.  We'll look to see if we can do better while the bunch of you decides whether or not you really do want grey.  The idea of half grey and half white shirts might work - but maybe the price would go up because we get a quantity discount for buying 120 or so of one color/style.

I do however always buy shirts to support this site and all of you too !!

for 2012 I have to concentrate on getting the car and the 2 motors ready and all $$  need to go towards that... not advertising...

3 Big 200 club goals this year... so I have to put my $$ where my goals are..

Seeing you're on the air now, Charles -- I did get your request for a pair of gray/grey hats.  I'll get them out in the morning.  Nancy's gone to Denver and SLC to visit the kids - so my follow-through for orders is kinda sluggish.  Nonetheless -- they'll go.  I do have your mailing address, don't I?  Nancy keeps that stuff in her "landracing.com" address book -- I think.  I suppose I might as well ask you to send it to me one more time, anyway -- but not here on the open Forum (unless you're okay with it).

I've sent a preliminary design to SSS.  I thought Charles' Stude was one of those to be on the shirt, so it's on that version.  I guess I otta remove that layer...unless I misunderstood.

I REALLY need a photo from Lars (Octane) of whatever vehicle he wanted on the shirt.  I can't go a lot farther until I get something from him.  So if someone is near him or knows how to pester him, please do.

A coupla other things.  I've requested that the graphic be placed on the front of the shirt.  My reason is twofold.  First, if I'm wearing a photo vest, you can't see anything on the back.  The other reason is that, like Bob Drury, I tend to wear everything I eat.  (Let's not take that any farther, k?) Front-of-the-shirt graphics minimize that little issue.

Second, if SSS oks it, I can post a small image of the final graphic...when I get all the parts and pieces on it.

If you haven't sent me an image to use, you can email it to rbuck@xmission.com

Thanks,

I wonder why Lars hasn't got back to either of us yet, Ray.  I guess I'm going to have to dig around and see if there's another avenue to being back in touch with him.  He surprised me - out of the blue, so to speak - when he put in his bid to be on the shirt.  By the way, he did tell me that it wasn't for his bike - that he had something different in mind.  No matter what, though -- if you've got a way to get Lars to contact either RtR or me -- Please Do It soon.

I like having the graphics on the front of the shirt - so I wasn't difficult when Ray suggested it.  As for posting a thumbnail - or whatever - of the final design - sure, I expect that'd be dandy.  But that won't happen 'til all four of the winners have checked in with their requested art.

Front or the back of the shirt -- I was told it's a coastal thing.  Back in the west, front in the east.
