What's the history on this one...?
« on: December 06, 2020, 08:03:02 AM »
I ran across an oldie that looks like a goodie, but I can't figure it out and haven't found the history. What say you?

The photo is too small to view, increasing the size causes pixelation. Do you have a larger photo?

Many different driving positions have been tried to lower frontal area. Such as laying on back and looking through periscope. This one looks like the driver is laying on stomach.

I could enlarge it without pixilation. He is lying on his stomach facing forward. There is a very low windshield hump in front of the driver. My guess is that he would have to not wear a safety helmet in order to raise his head enough to see forward. Sort of a Rollin Free ride on 4 wheels.

Looked down on a mirror which was on an angle to look forward. Same theory as laying on your back looking up at a mirror to see forward. Many liners tried different positions and were allowed to run back when this photo was taken. It appears this is a test or returning on the return road or maybe going to the starting line since the driver cover panel was off. Rules are much different now and speeds much higher.

I'm a little bit surprised that no one can remember.....

this was a strange....scary....project

I got several informations in my archiv about it...but can't get them in the moment for some scans....

so, just some information that way...

was a project in the 70's.....streamliner with a VW engine (air cooled).....the body shape was strange, too....it looked from the side with his nose contour that car stand upside down...means...the wheels are on the wrong side...due to this aerodynamic effect the car handles very bad....finally it flipped....but didn't hurt the driver....maybe the pride of the owner, builder and driver...

I have some pic's of the volksliner. I put them on a disk a few years and a couple of computers back.  There on a .mix type file and good ole windows 10 won't open them. I would put them on the forum if I could retrieve them.  Any suggestions.   It's great you put pic's on a disc so you will have them then micro soft changes operating systems .  Then what.    SB

Rear wheel steering with your head near the fulcrum point...That was an accident looking for a place to happen. I like it. :friday

That was an accident looking for a place to happen.

With the engine hanging out the back, so much for having the center of gravity ahead of the center of pressure!   Ask Stainless about that arrangement.   I remember watching him through binoculars (as a course marshal) from about the 5 destroy one around around the 4 a few years back.  I was certain he had to be dead, but fortunately his injuries were fairly minor.

The article (and some other captions) seemed to be in a computerized version of translation to English.  Anyone got a clue how this is done?
