I guess it's me, I still don't understand it.
I'm still getting something about a 4-ft. long 2 by 4 and it goes where?

(We old Street Roadster guys aren't supposed to know anything about aero.)

I bet there is 50+hp worth of speed to be gained outside the engine compartment. Lose the hp sucking overdrive, run the tallest tire you can get under it & go to the appropriate gear set. If the headers dump under the car, stick them out of the front fenders. If the air dam looks more like a snow plow, get it up to the height of the junk under the car & make sure the back is higher than the front.
  Sid.

Sid... raising the dam will increase the air flow around the ''junk'' causing turbulence more drag, less down force and less speed.

Step pans keep the air away from the ''junk'' preventing turbulence  smoothing the air not speeding it up.

I don't know what you run but if it's one of those snow plow cars & you are interested in going faster, I suggest you talk to an automotive aerodynamicist.

The worlds fastest Camaro. 294 mph in 1st timed mile on parts wash  :-D

Computer program shows 343 mph at 7500 with 2400 hp and 8 secs from 6500 rpm to 7000 rpm and we took 4 secs

No snowplow but stock spoiler 11/2 in off salt and 10 wide tires :-o

Regarding the height of a front spoiler I do not agree with Sid. I did go to a "automotive aerodynamicist" to  find out what the real scoop is on front spoiler ground clearance. Simon McBeath is a recognized aerodynamicists with a long history of published aero articles in "Racecar Engineering" magazine and several books, "Competition Car Aerodynamics" and "Competition Car Downforce" both of which deal with this question. Quoting from his book "Competition Car Aerodynamics" page 59, "The plots show total downforce increasing and drag decreasing with the increasing air dam depth." This conclusion was drawn from information that he generated by doing a CFD of a "standard" NASCAR style vehicle and varying the depth of the front air dam. So the longer the air dam the better.

But nowhere does he suggest that air dam be on the ground unless the vehicle is braking.
