M/T Tires
« on: August 24, 2008, 12:35:55 AM »
Got back from a good trip down to the salt. Cleaning things up I have found two marks that appear to follow some kind of line on both of my very expensive, brand new M/T 30" 500 plus mph tires. Cords are showing on each of the tires and the marks look almost like knife slits but follow some kind of what appears to be belt lines across the tires. These only have four runs on them this year. The fastest was 213. Anyone else out there with these tires having the same kind of problem. I will be contactomg M/T Monday to get answers and replacements. I'll keep you posted on their response.
For those of you who couldn't make it you missed great weather, decent salt and a bunch of very good folks with fast hot rods.

If there is a diagonal line on each tire where you see cord it is the cord splice.  It will show up the first time you run the tire with any power on it.  This is normal and is not a flaw. If cord is showing anywhere outside of this area that would be cause for concern.

Mine are doing the samething. Only 5 passes. Then we picked up some debris on the long course and punctured a tire. I will also be calling M/T on Monday to see if the tire can be repaired and what is up with the cords.

The cords are showing at what has been explained the cord splice. I can see the line running under the rubber which follows each of those lines. Thanks for the info. I will post pictures as soon as I get them downloaded.

If you have 1700lb on each tire, what are your choices for approved LSR tires today up to 250mph?

Got ahold of Tom at M/T. He advised the surface at the salt is very abrasive and the first thing to show is the cord splice. He advises it is very common and does not affect the performance of the tire. Whew, don't have to order any new ones!!! :-D

I have said this before........guys are nuts to go to the salt with one set of tires........I realize that two sets of Mickey's is three grand, but what  is a ruined trip worth.  In my case I trailer the car on my backup 28" Goodyears.........only seven hundred or so a pair........not what I would choose to run, but better than no tires at all............Bob
