PJ, it's easy to understand why the motorcyclists get two hours to turn around and the cars only one hour: The bike folks have a better lobbying force and can afford more lawyers. :-D
... Yes, 1 hour...Thanks.

Northern Utah and the salt flats got pounded with severe thunder storms and rain last night and are getting more even as I type this post. Would'nt this be a good thing for the newly reworked international course, assuming some hot dry weather follows?

According to the storm total rainfall map on the weather service web page the area of wendover got between 0.1 and 1 inch of rain in this recent storm passage. Most of the 1 inch stuff appears to have been south of I80 but looks like some of it crossed the highway.

Any word on Sam Wheeler, or Charles Nearburg? Also, will Nish be shaking down their new Hemi?
Bummer, I heard + on Sam and Nearburg the other day!
It's not the Raspberry Rocket, but rather Jim Knaap's Barnyard Bearcat, with three GSXR 1000's. All three cars are FIA Category A (special construction). The Poteet & Main Speed Demon is the only one of the three in Group I (with supercharger).
Jim Knaap's Barnyard Bearcat is also Group II, but in the 2 to 3 liter Class 8. The records there are currently held by Speed Demon (without the turbo) at 250.917 in the km and 250.853 in the mile.
<snip>
The way I understand it, the Poteet & Main Speed Demon is first in line for tomorrow's runs (starting as soon as it's light enough to see) to be followed by the bikes, then the other cars.
TMAN----a little Irish whisky is better then beer any morning
Ray, I'll see your sunrise and raise you two. The first shot is from the top of the overpass near the truckstop, the second from Land's End.
how dang cool is that a competitor adding to the coverage !!!! THANK YOU...!
Car is moving out. Has left the push truck, on his own.
Car continuing to accelerate at the ten (1) mile, at the 2 mile, entering the traps,
entry speed 432 kilo 436 chute is out at the four, chute fully deployed, puff of smoke -- fire be ready
Is that a tire they just ran on at the rear of the car?
Ray - close, but here's a later version of the SD story:
They're pulling the heads of the D motor and installing the C in the car. They'll run the C motor from the 1 1/2 and through the lights, the idea being to get some numbers out of the bigger motor without running it the extra mile and a half under full power. Ron says they're hoping for 425++ without hurting the motor. They'll decide about the D once Duttweiler sees what's going on inside.
In other notes about the Speed Demon: Betty just delivered Mexican food to all of the workers on the course - as well as the SD crew, of course. I got three enchiladas, Nancy the posole. Thanks, Betty Howard -- George's sister.Posole, it's not Wednesday, what gives!
What happened to Jim Knapp's barnyard bearcat???
Which class is the R-V car running? And what is the record?
Which class is the R-V car running? And what is the record?
They're running Category A (special vehicles), Group II (without supercharger - they took the turbo off), Class 6 (1100-1500cc's). The plan is to next install the nitrous bottles and try for 200 - but not today.
Fuel makes no difference here as it's FIA sanction meet - pump gas, nitro, whatever. Neither does body type - it could be a streamliner, a lakester, or a semi-truck. It just has to be an unblown reciprocating engine between 1.1 and 1.5 liters. Previously, their new record was held by a Mercury LN7 at 137 (km) and 138 (mile).
thanks for putting up with the difficult conditions there in order to keep us informed Slim, bear up it won't go on forever. Now, merember to separate the colors and whites .

I never heard what happened to the Speed Demon motors at Speedweek.
You know they had to do many full pulls on the dyno.
The Salt Gods determine all.

The first run threw a rod out he side of the block before, or near the first mile.
They loaded the smaller engine and managed a 423 record after all was said and done.
Ray may have some more insight, as to what else transpired; as he is closer to the team.
I was quite busy helping to crew the 3838 Vinson "Vette; and we managed to get Rob
Frey into the "Red Hat" Club on a licensing run.

No live announcing at this meet.
It's a British car now,it has a bonnet.That's exactly what i was thinking to.
Any up date on Knap's problem with the shaft?
By the interrupting way, Al Lamb's exit was 256.9 -- still gaining.
Lamb is ready to run, course is clear, he's off the line and on the way. Post and return.
Through the four and entering the timed mile.
Entry 252 kilo 256 mile 255
That'll put him in the mid-253 mph average. I'll soon get the exact numbers. Still don't have the old record he ran on.
Entry 252.2 kilo 256.3 mile 255.3 exit 255.1
Some photos from the Knapp trailer.
Ray that shot of P & M is so dramatic. The mountains and the angle of the sun
is what makes early morning photography so exciting. That opportunity is no
longer available during Speed Weak.
FREUD
Maybe Max and I can talk about some of this stuff at the WF. There are a lot of stories out there. The shadow knows. :-o
Congratulations to Al Lamb on the 1000cc Honda
Kim Krebs is flying on the 750!
Speed Demon is in a class of one.

Good for JK, now back it up. BTW Dan Warner got in the 200 club in this car.Couple of other folks including his friend Jeanne and also the guy who built it originally. Nice going Jim- many congrats!!
Jon and Ray.............will you let P&M as well as the other competitors know how much we appreciate them giving you guys access and information!?
It blows me away that we can be sitting here asking questions, photo requests (Glen ) and info in real time and you guys can post it instantly! Nice!
Ron Main who told me that it was clutch or trans and that they would have it fixed by morning, run the big motor again and then put the 4-banger in it for the 2-3 liter record...I think. That might be the one that Jim Knapp just set (last photo.) Or is it?
DAMMMMNNNNN almost 260 on a 1 liter bike!!!

The 419 yesterday was with the D motor. The return run will push it out-of-sight!
I had a glitch -- couldn't finish the R/V run. Here are the speeds:
Entry 197 kilo 203.9 mile 203.1
Averages: Kilo 204.69 mile 204.13
Pending certification that'll be a new record -- and that's also a red hat for Alan, pending certification, per Dan Warner.
Congratulations to the Rice-Vigeant team.
PS Thanks, Glen. Whatever it was has cleared itself. In case, though -- a while ago I was getting a "server error" message whenever I tried to post. Did any of you get that?
Barnyard Bearcat is getting ready to roll. After Jim Knapp's 268-ish record run yesterday, he's pulling out the stops this afternoon. Fingers crossed. Many thanks for all you folks who've congratulated us and thanked us for being here. This is the best Bonneville meet, ever! Love the "at speed" photos on this site, too.
Does the PM liner have traction control???Yes.
bike not ready to runThat's too bad.
Brandon and the electric bike has a small electrical problem per FIM Charlie, so that run is on short hold. The other bikes have moved down the course to their chosen starting points.
Ray, the Olds is donk!
Im sorry if I missed it, but what engines are in the Bearcat ? Real nice announcing job Slim !!!!
Ray, around here "donk" is the same as callipygous.
Doc, when I were a wee lad growing up in your county, a fair number of girls were of Scanderhoopian descent, blonde and callipygous.

I think I read a few posts back that P/M got the head welded up for the 299ci motor. Are they gonna run the 299ci motor again?
That's a lot of chain! Has to be tough to align!I'm sure many sleepless nights went into the chains. Stock GSXR 1000 on the right. The drive sprocket goes where the black circle is on the right.
Albert Einstein - "Insanity is doing the same thing, over and over again, but expecting different results."
That's my opinion of the electric bike. If they are making changes it sure ain't doin nuttin.
Might just be joy riding. Fast company to be joy riding with!
When is the Shoot out over?
Way to go Al!...
Cory... Some of us have more patience than money...
Stainless,
Will we ever see the Amo Steele Streamliner at this event.
Tom G.
I am wondering about the split rear wheel drive on Knapps car. what happens if a chain breaks on one drive wheel. will it steer it?Rear wheel centers are about 12" apart. Outside of car IIRC is 22" wide. I don't think one spinning, one not would produce much turning force.

The "hole" on the end is a dimple. They look like they were on the end of a 1/2" dia. rod. The end away from the dimple is rolled over to give a radius to the end. The dimple was to attach it. Unless the other side has solder marks I doubt if they were electrical, more like the protective end of something.
Lunch break is over. We had an impromptu award ceremony/goodbye luncheon (is luncheon the correct word for a bunch of styrofoam boxes, each laden with an enchilada/beans/rice dinner from the truckstop?). Since some of the entrants at this event were leaving this afternoon - it was decided (at George's suggestion) to hand out some timing awards and do some thanking for all the fun we've had. Rice/Vigeant is packing to leave, as is Speed Demon, Brandon Miller (electric bike) and perhaps Jamie Williams. Greg, Kim, and Jim are staying over for the rest of today and tomorrow, Al Lamb isn't finished yet. Rick Yacoucci just arrived - and there's a story to that. He's been here for a few days, but yesterday went out into the boonies north and west of the salt. I guess (it's only hearsay at this point) that he found a road that let him get in - but not back out. At the last I heard he was hung up with a front tire not touching and the rear of the car hanging off the edge of a 300-foot dropoff. The car got left there last night when the Rice Brothers went out and found him, and so when I saw him drive in just now -- it was a pleasant surprise. I won't ask (maybe I won't) how much it cost to get helped out of the mess in which he was.
Well, well. Thanks, Ray. I won't post the shots I took at the lunch after all.
More after I report on the Barnyard Bearcat that's about to run.
Engine is running, car will start about the 1 1/2. Nancy and I are at the timing stand to see Jim go by at full steam - so the times will be just a bit delayed. We get to watch for a change! :-D :-D
First of all, Knapp just ran through the lights at 302 kilo, 301 mile. I'll get exact figures in a while. But wow, what a whoooosh! Fun -- wish I'd seen more runs.
Entry 297.94 Kilo 302.04 mile 301.88 exit 305.40
That'll do, won't it? Oughta get him his unlimited license. Now - a quick return run. He didn't use his chute, I hear, and I'll guess it's to make the turnaround quicker.
Thanks to all what a meet man of man
Ray...gotta add something on the Rice Brothers. No doubt brothers in the same car but probably first time at the same meet.
Brothers Ed and Glenn Carter got in 78 & 79 in the same car. Clay and Garrett Goldman in 2009 & 2010 same roadster. I think the Langlos and there are probably others....................JD

Ray the Rat -- The Barnyard Bearcat is a Streamliner, not a Lakester. I'm sure that was just a slip of the typing fingers. Jim and trusty mechanic Mike Van Doran were wrenching away on the Bearcat from late afternoon well into the night, while I did light duty washing and folding clothes and picking up Mexican food for the boys for dinner. We're hoping for an early run Wed. morning, over 300 mph, then - fingers crossed - another 300 mph run for the Blue Hat. What a terrific meet this has been!
That post was awesome Ray, I learned something that is important. Thank You Again
Hey, folks,
Thanks so much for all the posts. Got a LOT on my mind right now so will keep this short. I promise to fill you all in later. But I have to give a BIG thank you to Jellybean! I slept a LOT better last night after seeing your "diagnosis", THANKYOUVERYMUCH.

That's a bit cryptic, Craig...but I'm glad ya learned something. This entire season has been yet another steep learning curve for me. I hope to keep learning til they scatter my ashes on the salt.
Ray, What I was learning in this case was the use of talcum powder in packing a chute. A small thing to some, but when you need it NOW a quick and smooth deployment sounds good to me.
Now to get things unpacked and see if any of my photos were worth the effort.

Mike:
If I might be so bold as to speak on behalf all the photographers that were at the shoot out.
You run a first class event that is a pleasure to cover.
You provide better photographic access than any other meet!
Without the cooperation of you and your staff to our needs we would not be able to document the event so well and capture a historical record of the competitors efforts to achieve their goals.
THANK YOU for working with us so well and letting us do our best work to document the event!

Photos from last year. Out at the timing trailer where the great engine noises come whooshing through to break the usual ominous silence on the salt pan. Jeff (Trimmers) during a slow time one day on the Cook's Shootout 2011 other race, the informal human powered vehicle un-timed trials. I certainly would have liked to be back there this year. Maybe next time.
Big thanks to Mike & Mike Jr., and that whole group of folks running the meet. So many runs of bikes hitting big numbers, so many cars doing the same. This is nothing short of fantastic.

Anybody seen Yaccouci?
Yes I talked to Rick yesterday and the day before. He went 4 wheeling Monday and apparently got his truck stuck in a precarious place and was going up to recover the truck as I left around noon yesterday.
Larry
Ray - Make sure Steve S sees that 1st pic of the white car at speed- he's "flying the nose" and needs to lower the front ride height (if possible).
Slim,Ray, LSE - thanks for the event/coverage. Slim, $$ coming your way.

Now: Flies. I'm considering taking a hose and running it from my exhaust into the Burb and running it for 30 minutes or so (with me out of itself, of course.) Has anyone ever tried this?
As I remember hearing, Jim Knapp wanted water for cooling his fuel pump - and the water tank's pump in the trailer had stopped pumping. I'll go ask for a clarification, okay? Are we sorta bored - or what?

Junior just confirmed this...although as I understand it, there may have been more contamination in the fuel tank as well.
I cured vapor lock on a '33 Ford with a 1/2 grapefruit on the fuel pump.
Drove across Arizona, New Mexico, and 1/3 of Texas in 1955.
Guess he has a different set-up.

RTR, how long is your son going to be gone? You could put that 350Z in the 130 club, I'm sure he wouldn't mind...much
The Cook meet is second to none, and this year's event was no exception.

I got home at 9:30 this morning. :-P We got all of the mile markes down yesterday and did all of the other stuff some time after that. It's all still a big old wondreful blur. It had to be one of the coolest weeks of my very eventful life. I'm smiling. No, really. :-D Wayno
