Ok. I just may be lucky enough to hit Bonneville this year. So, I want to know who I'm typing to. I'd like to be able to put a face to a name so that I know who I'm B.S.ing at the track.
I'll start.

Hey -- that "girl" looks pretty much like one of the guys I saw at a combination fuel stop/beer store as we drove through Tennessee on our way to Maxton last time. I didn't ask if he had a sister.

This probably as good a place for this post as anywhere.
Found this while I was researching some stuff… found it interesting…
Machinist's Workshop Magazine (March/April or
May/June, 2007) actually tested penetrants for break out torque on rusted nuts. They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.
*Penetrating oil ..... Average load*
None ..................... 516 pounds
WD-40 .................. 238 pounds
PB Blaster ............. 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ..... 127 pounds
Kano Kroil ............ 106 pounds
ATF-Acetone mix....53 pounds
The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch, and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.

Thanks for the great info!!

Freud,
Just curious, did they say how long they let the solutions set on the parts before they did the test? I wonder how long the Acetone would stay suspended in the ATF before it evaporates.
Over the years I have taken about 50 Flathead Ford engines apart and the best I found for the job was the Kroil. And I found out about it by mistake while working at a Nuclear Power Plant. Wish I would have known about Acetone & ATF. Over the years I have never had much luck with Liquid Wrench, very surprised to see it rate so high.

They say coca-cola works too. I know it draws ant's & flies and is sticky. :-D

I wondered about the aft/acetone combo. Freud's entry is on a lot of old car forums. However, I chased down the horse's mouth

The author states in the thread above that the figures were obtained after 8 hours of immersion.
Pretty interesting forum that I'm just beginning to look at. http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/index.php (http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/index.php)

A case of chemicals showed up at my shop. I open it up and it's called Nuts Off. Seriously. Shortly thereafter I get a bill for $400 for 12 cans of it from some outfit in New Jersey than I never heard of. I tell them I didn't order it, and they will need to send me a UPS tag if they want it back. They threatened to wreck my credit and sue me if I didn't pay for it. I told them to put that in writing, and it's the last I heard of them. I guess it works OK, but I saved the last can just so I can say, "Hold on a minute, let me get my Nuts Off."
While WD-40 is not the world's best penetrant oil, I can't live without it. Recently it saved me several hundred dollars. I was driving my wife's truck (pretty truck) and some ahole left a full can of spray paint in the road right around a turn. Since I was going fairly slow when I hit it, it hosed down most the truck with paint. I drove home as fast as I could, and grabbed two cans of WD, and started hosing down the truck ASAP. After about an hour, all of it came off (except the undercarriage and tires).
It also:
Takes off road tar
Kills bugs
Removes Duct Tape residue
Spray it on before the drags, and it will help keep burnout rubber off the body, and helps remove it if it does stick
Or if you use Vasoline to keep the rubber off, it cleans the Vasoline.
Cleans and preserves granite surface plates and measuring tools.
Allows you to move very heavy tooling on granite plates
etc
etc

Sending stuff that was not ordered is a common scam, as is double- billing. They count on someone just paying their invoice without checking.

My picture is in my avatar. I'm the tall one without tires. Might need reading glasses. :-D
