Craig Breedlove has announced an intention to construct / obtain a vehicle and try to reach 800 MPH sometime in 2013. This from the Hemmings blog:
http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2011/10/26/craig-breedlove-announces-plans-to-break-the-800-mph-mark/comment-page-1/#comment-2935041
"Someone else" would drive.
Thoughts?

This should be interesting to follow. Looking forward to seeing the design concept and FR is probably turning back flips over this.
-
On whose $$$$$$$$$? Definately won't be any of his....
-
Wonder where he plans to run? We've been turned down by the BLM at Alvord and Diamond Valley, can't seem to get cooperation from
the Air Force bureaucrats at Edwards and the salt is questionable. Maybe he can get the backing to run in South Africa like the Brits.
I'm beginning to consider the Ice Road in the Arctic.
-
So craig is going to buy back the car that he sold to steve fossett and let someone else drive the car. Why did he not do that in first place instead of selling the car.
-
I am ready to drive. Where are the keys?
-
Racefan, I do not know and have never met Craig Breedlove, but he sold the car to Fossett because of a lack of funding to race it on his own.
Keep in mind that when the Brit's booked Black Rock and broke the sound barrier, they spent millions on logistics including aircraft patroling the dessert from above as mandated by the BLM, so it ain't no cheep deal.
Having followed Breedloves adventures since he ran a go-cart streamliner on the salt in, I believe 1960, and following how he built the first jet car (which ended up in the pond) in his parents driveway, somehow getting sponsorship from Goodyear and Shell along the way, I have no doubt that with his charisma, looks and history that he has the ability to find the resources to accomplish putting the plan into action.
Whether or not he can clear the beuracratic nightmare is the real question.
Bob
-
I don't know if Craig bought the SOA back or what his plan is but I do know he had to sign a non-compete clause with Fossett that
would not allow him to build another car and run against his old SOA. I believe it was for a period of 3 years. Considering he sold the
car to Steve for $2 mil and Fossett's wife was now asking $4 mil for it, he must have made a deal with Peggy or he is actually building
another car.
-
he has as good a chance as anybody..actually more of a chance than anyone except the champs the Brits....given his track record...
-
Considering the lack of support by American corporations for a US project I guess the Brits will just keep marching along.
US Corperations, STP, Lockheed, Intel are all supporting the Bloodhound project while they snub the US project.
Hell, we can't even get a track to run on. The BLM and the Air Force aren't interested in helping either. Go figure!

Looks like 2013 could be the lucky year!
A possible 7 teams looking for records in the
near future, you couldn't write a better movie
script. Time to seperate the boys from the men.
Breedlove back in the game.
Noble on the horizon.
Rosco doing his thing.
Waldo, JetBlack, and Bullet Project.
Even that other American team, NAE.
Who is going to market their way to the top first?
That's alot of teams looking for even more money.
This is the real race. New record 14 years overdue!
What's the odds in Vegas? I'll pick ? What mph? When?
Anyone, anyone............
-
Odds? Follow the money. 2013? Could be 2023.
Breedlove is going to have to hook a tow strap to Bloodhound SSC. :-o
-
The Fossett/Breedlove car is virtually ready to run. All Breedlove needs to do is beat 764mph to get the record back. The car can do that now. Bloodhound is still being built. When Breedlove ran the car before he was over 764mph at least once. Breedlove can do this, you watch.
-
Additionally the Fossett/Breedlove car is located in Reno, NV. 3 hours from Black Rock? I would be surprised if Breedlove did not get this job done.

over 764mph at least once, are you sure about that. :? :? :? :? :?

I hardly think so!(that he was over 746 MPH)
Reports of him doing 675 we rumored, but I don't think that speed was ever substantiated.
Stll, if anyone can top 746, and someone will, Craig Breedlove is a good bet! I sure wish him all the luck in the world!
-
My bet is on American Eagle... I like the sound of that.
Good luck Ed.
Smitty
-
Did you mean the "American Eagle" project which is rumoured to be making a return to the outright record scene or the "North American Eagle" programme run by Ed Shadle?
I thought Craig Breedlove was going to build a new car, not buy back the Fosset vehicle, which of course started as Craig's Sonic Arrow.
Not sure there will be many teams ready to run in 2012 or even 2013 if the economic climate stays much as it is now.

-
I heard from a guy that is involved with the Reno air race scene that Craig is building a whole new car with twin engines.
Don't know for sure what is really going on.
-
Rosco McGLashan says the Aussie Invader 5R will go from 0 to 1000 MPH in 20 seconds. Seems like to me a driver mite pass out at those G-Forces. Mite need a remote shut down.
Richard
-
Well, just extrapolating, a Dragster goes from 0-300 in four seconds, so (of course) could go to 1500 in 20 seconds, if they just had room. And they got some built-in shut-offs, too.
-
Sorry Malcolm.. Yes I meant North American Eagle. I'm pretty sure my Wife had a similar past with that Car/Plane when she was growing up at Edwards back in the X-15 days, So I'm kinda prejudicial.

Stan, you're not the first to extrapolate Landracing speeds from Dragracing speeds.  Wayno

Well......I just called Bill Breedlove about what Craig's intentions may be. He is going to call Craig and find out. Bill was on Craig's team when he was testing and running the car for the 2 years prior to Fossett's ownership of it. Bill is an accomplished racer in his own right and is Craig's cousin.
-
Just saw this on Foxnews. Maybe Breedlove will have to step up his game?

This fella is still many years out before he can even run systems tests. Neat concept though.
-
Bill Breedlove got back to me. He confirmed that they had a documented speed of 675 mph that day. He said that he now doubts that the car ever went supersonic. Based on his notes from that run on pressure and density he calculated the Sound Barrier to be close to 738mph. He implied there were instruments on the car showing faster speeds but would not now commit to any number like he did at the time.
He also confirmed that Craig Breedlove gave an interview and that he also "penned" a twin engined supersonic vehicle. He also said "based on financing and timing and finding a driver, maybe inside the family or outside the family". He could build another car but he would not be the driver.
So I must now agree that the Spirit of America probably never went supersonic.

Assuming constant acceleration (probably unrealistic but that way we can use linear algebra!):
LSRV:
V = Vo + at
1000 MPH = 0 + a * 20 s
a = 50 MPH / sec => 22.35 m/s**2
22.35 m/s**2 / 9.8 m/s**2 = ~2.3 G average
Dragster:
320 MPH = 0 + a * 4.4 s
a = 72 MPH / sec => 32.19 m/s**2
32.19 m/s**2 / 9.8 m/s**2 =~3.3G average

What'd he say?

He said one is fast the other is quick. :?

Richard
For the record, the 1996 pass that suffered the fastest U-turn in history was caused by a steering instability: zero trail, adverse roll. The on-board data recording of the front wheel speed peaked at 675 mph. The acceleration rate and wheel well drag vs. traction and well inertia at that point in the run mitigate to the 675 mph reading being within 1% of vehicle speed.
The G-forces that all of the ALSR teams are worried about surprise me. 3G??? For 199 missions with over a dozen pilots, the X-15 accelerated at over 5 G for 10 to 30 seconds depending on mission profile. Fighter pilots in ACM (air combat maneuvering) suffer 7 to 8 G for 30+ seconds to gain an angles advantage. Unlimited aerobatic pilots will go from +8 G for 20 seconds to -6 G for 10 seconds, then flip between the two. All the while these pilots are holding precise profiles with far more control input than is typical in land racing.
If we sit the driver upright so that the G force has little effect on their upper body blood pressure, they would be able to handle significantly higher acceleration and deceleration G while still maintaining active control of a car. The research that the Air Force did after WWII into G vs. human capability proved this 50 years ago. Look it up.
G capability needs to be trained, just like any physical activity. Every fighter pilot and aerobatic pilot will tell you this if you ask. One of the things missing from all of the ALSR programs is any kind of simulation for the drivers to build G tolerance.
-
... One of the things missing from all of the ALSR programs is any kind of simulation for the drivers to build G tolerance.
How coincidental, that I just finished reading about Art Arfons spinning himself around in a DIY backyard centrifuge- darn near half a century ago!
-
Eric is right, developing a tolerance for the G forces takes training and keeping in good physical condition. In our F-104
the seating is mostly vertical (just a slight recline). In some of the cars, they are expecting the driver to lay prone. Perfect
situation for a redout under a heavy G load for an extended time. Also gives you a heck of a headache!

Not true. Apart from a working lifetime flying fast jets, Andy Green has been G tolerance training since 2010 using a BloodhoundSSC run profile and an aerobatic plane - his weekend "for fun" flying.

Sorry I had to but in here, didn't read the rest of the thread, will do after posting this. The Bullet Project is working on acclimatising Driver Paula and bringing her fitness levels up to strength in preparation. We are working with a biomechanics professor to attain how the body will react with g forces and to attain the best driver seating position that will reduce the risk of blackout.
The RV1 is now half the weight it used to be and is only 9.15 meters long as design stands today. Our expected track length is to be 11 miles inclusive of safety factor and therefore the G forces The RV1 will be pulling will be significantly higher but for a shorter time span. We have an option of using Australian built, Lox Kerosene engines already tested and available to us or continuing with the development of a hybrid engine as used by bloodhound but on a much larger scale. The hybrid is still in development stage and has not to date been tested for use with a human being on board so this option is a long way off but still in the pipeline.
The team is gathering strength and development is way beyond almost all of the other challengers in the running today. It is our choice not to run newsletters at present or update our website more frequently due to limited assistance within these areas, Our priorities lie in the project objectives which are mainly research and development of it's vehicles.
I did offer to place updates on here in the past but there seemed to be a lack of interest and therefore haven't done to date
If anyone is wondering, I have posted before under the name Healewis

Is that 11 miles run up to the timed mile(23 miles total? Or, 11 miles with the timed mile in the middle, 5 mile run up on each end?
DW
-
Well, I do fly my own airplane but I haven't tried what Andy did. Doing things like skiing, flying, racing and those sorts of things
keeps you sharp and conditioned.
-

DW
As things stand the RV1 will reach the timed mile in 4 miles estimating 6 miles to stop. There was an error in the racecar engineering article about the weight of RV1, it is actually designed to weigh in at 2,720kg/6000lbs fuelled not as printed 6000kg.
-
Andy Green has to work on his confidence. He is sooo shy.
That is the true mark of a professional. Just like a duck, calm and cool on the surface, paddling like hell underneath.
I remember an interview years ago with a female aerobatic pilot talking about training before the season started.
I don't remember her name, but I certainly remember her comment that the early training keeps the bleeding in her eyes to a minimum!
-
At the Edwards AFB air show in 2005, I watched an F-16 pilot do an outside loop. Col. Simpson, standing next to me said
"that really hurts". Jesus, I guess so!!!!
-
A few years ago I got suckered into a bet with an F-15 Jockey that he could either make me pass out, or puke within 10 minutes of take off. I had no problem with the +8G turns (Got a little fuzzy but no black out.) or the zoom straight up to 30,000 feet... It was the parabolic arch at the top that got me. Does anyone know what Oatmeal looks like when it's floating weightless? Cost me 2 bottles of John Walker, and $100.00 bucks for that ride. Oh yea... and the savage scorn of the Crew Chief when we got home. :-D

Anybody heard anything? Maybe it was just a PR stunt? Anyone, anyone......
-
Not a word!
-
Guess he may surprise us yet by wheeling out a completed car but the last I heard was a rumour early last year of plans for a twin-engined car. True or not I have no idea. Guess that no firm news means that it's the usual situation. To quote NASA - no bucks, no Buck Rogers.
Robin

Just fishing for any new info, anyone got any?
-
Craig and Stan was at the salt in September during WoS.
Project is moving forward and some important people are in the boat........
-
And do we have an update? If not, does anyone have an idea when we might know more?
Perhaps Mr Breedlove himself could be invited to join and give us a teaser of what he's up to.
-
You can't keep a project like this secret for this long. Im guessing it
sounded like fun, but never got off the ground. Anyone, anyone?
Mr. Breedlove, if you are out there get on the computer, it's cool.
Anybody want to guess who will top the current mark?
-
ski123 said: "...Anybody want to guess who will top the current mark?..." And I expect he's asking about the top speed. Well, didn't I see an article yesterday about the Bloodhound -- saying they had so far raised 100 million Rand (or was it 200 million)? A rand is about 11 cents US these days, so that says that $10 - 20 million US is in the project so far. That number alone puts them in a good position.
If we could find a way to get that much to the F104A project - - - Ed would be happy, to say the least.
-
Treit would generate an entirely new vocabulary for $20 Million.
He would compliment everyone involved.

Could wheels be made for a rocket sled to qualify as a land speed vehicle? Does someone have to be in the vehicle to qualify?
I do realize this somewhat circumvents the spirit and intent but in the end its all relative.
-
The rules of record setting from all groups involved in certifing a record require a driver/rider.
The records most people on this board are interested in are set a specific venues.
DW
-
dan,
Does the driver have to be a homosapien? If someone get a rocket sled Ill provide the chimp.. Possible could be entry into the 2 club? We can name him Murdock... Im sure with current advances in chimp training we can train him to push the eject button and the "Booster" button, Im not sure whomever is in there that they can steer it anyways. Of course I haven't been trained to put my dirty clothes in the laundry hamper that is 2 feet away, but that's a whole different graduate course. I was not willing to put in the training time needed for that task.
Jon
-
"...we can train him to push the eject button..."
Push the button, get a banana. :-D
-
I guess if Jon's chimp can get FIA clearance he/she would be good to go. Might be better to have the chimp learn to deposit Jon's underware in the proper container, drop the shorts - get a banana.

Craig is a true American bad-ass. This is good news, finally. I guessing he will get more in sponsorship
money in a few weeks, then the NAE team has got in over a decade. Just sayin'. Action and results
and a measurable amount of progression will dominate. Go USA USA USA. Craig doesn't even have a
car but I feel he is already way ahead in the race for The United States. America go get it back! NOW!
No, I'm not here bashing NAE. (although I see some faults) Breedlove knows marketing and fundraising.
-
Yeah, we do have faults. We're engineering types, not marketeers so it is hard to find money. Most of you out there don't realize how
hard it is to get the BLM to cooperate let alone the USAF. Getting a permit to run is as hard as finding money to run, even though
the car is finished and ready.
-
^^^ Ed, I hope your events in Seattle and Texas help get the ball rolling.
You guys are close, keep up the hard work. Stay ahead and win!

Ed Shadle got a front page on his local paper today plus a large part of an inside page. Lots of photos and good quotes. "We're kind of a bunch of hotrodders that have turned into science geeks". was my favorite. The News Tribune from Tacoma Wa. is the paper. Of course the trouble with the article is the head line." First, you take wings off a plane". Sad to say its hard to get excited about a car that's actually a plane with no wings. Probably what corporate America things anyway. He says he has spent "between one and two million dollars so far" If I had one or two mil to throw at landspeed racing I would give Seth a run for his money, and go to every event. That would be so much fun!
-
If I had one to two million dollars to spend on a LSR effort, I would be doing exactly what Ed Shadle is doing. It's called living a dream and that's romantic.

That Goodyear film of Craig's leap into the brine pond was riveting when I first saw it.
Spirit of America resides, intact, in Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry.
Seeing what American hot rodders like Craig could do inspired me to set a world land speed record as my goal, achieved with The Blue Flame driven by Gary Gabelich in 1970. Ray Dausman, Pete Farnsworth and I met that challenge. The prior successes of the Arfons brothers and Craig Breedlove further showed how American initiative could achieve success in this venue.
I posted a video of our project on Youtube, the last American car to set the absolute world land speed record - and the fastest ever on the Bonneville Salt Flats.
Take a look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PFEnzhP9Y4
Let's hope we can witness an American team take the ultimate land speed prize again.
