I'm gonna start by seeing if I'm smart enough to post a photo of my heap. This is supposed to be a photo of my parachute door. It's made out of a '36 Ford hubcap sandwiched between a couple pieces of aluminum. It was a bit of a bear to weld together on the edge but I toughed it out. 8-) If this works, I'll fill in the blanks on the rest of the car. Wayno
-
Nice!
Kitty litter under a flathead? What's up with that?
Mike
-
Hoo-bloody-ray.
It's about time you got started on the build diary Wayno. I got all choked up when I went into your shed and saw all the stuff , I did threaten to start posting the photo's you'd sent me but I didn't want to jeopardize the chances of ever getting another apricot wood smoked steak....
I know you've got a hamster in a wheel speed connection there but you could try starting an upload before you go to bed, before you go shopping kind of thing so you don't have to sit there for an eon watching the progress bar...there is a hungry audience out here wanting to see tanks get built.
Feed 'em.
Dr G, your tank bro.
-
Looks good Wayno, keep the info coming!
-
OK. This is going to be in little bites. :-P This is a picture of the reason for the V-8 emblem on the chute tube. "39 Mercury, 284 inches, running through a C-4 and a Greek Coupler into a Cyclone Quickchange with late axles. Hot Rod Works did all the modifying and assembly on that. :-D Back to the shed for now. More later. Wayno
-
That is looking really nice Wayno! We're all looking forward to more pictures.
Pete
-
Questions?! Are you producing those slick scoops? What is the scoop on your water tank? Looks great!
-
Trent, I just mocked that scoop up using a Shop-Vac tube 'cause it had a mild taper so I could get it out. That and a bit of urethane foam. What scoop on the water tank are you talking about? Anyway, here's a shot of the car for those of you whom haven't seen it. Wayno
-

LOL I went back and looked, I didn't see a scoop on the water tank either. I think he means, what's up (what's the deal) with the water tank.
Mike
-
Yeah! Whats up, whats the scoop? OR, is their a radiator in there or is it just a water tank?
-
That's looking pretty good Wayno

Mike
Kitty got to go somewhere. Tanks for the tank, looks gooood.
-
Yeah! Whats up, whats the scoop? OR, is their a radiator in there or is it just a water tank?
Trent, it's a water tank. Here's the inside before I capped it off. If you look closely you can see slots in the tubes for water passage. Wayno
-
Here it is closed up. The tubes offer support so the thing doesn't baloon. We'll find out. Wayno
-
Looks good, Wayno! I can't wait to see more!
-
Looks great! Was wondering where you got the belly tank body? Also is there something some where that explains the use of a water tank over a radiator. I understand that airflow is an issue in a belly tank, but I don't really understand the water tank and how it works. Doesn't need to be said, but I'm new to LSR.
Thanks for any info.
-Troy
-
Troy, I have the Tanks. And if someone on the Forum buys one, I shoot Jon and Nancy something. :-D The water tank is just that. A water tank. You just recirculate water through it during the run. Wayno
-

Troy, wayno SELLS those fine glass tanks.
-
Hey Trent. Who's Tony? Is that a friend of Troy's? :-D   Wayno
-
That's ok...I've been called worse. :-D Thanks for the information. Is there any kind of standard for the size of the water tank to the size of the engine...or is it just what size can fit the project? I would think the larger the tank the better?
Thanks again,
-Troy
-
I was dealing with a 5 year old driving hot wheels up my arm when I typed that!
-
I was dealing with a 5 year old driving hot wheels up my arm when I typed that!
Was his name Tony? Sorry. Troy, there are formulas around for that. They used to be around here somewhere. I'll hafta look. Welcome to the Forum. Wayno
-
Troy, your motor is the burner on your water tank... you don't want the water in your tank to exceed 210 degrees.... so depending on how much burner you have tells you how much water you might need to carry. We have a 5+ gal tank in the lakester, made around 300 HP by my calculations and ran 5 miles just under 210 degrees... we start with the water at salt temperature and this year ran a thermostat
-
Troy there are lots of cars running water tanks of various sizes. There are also cars running radiators inside water tanks. The other thing that a lot of people do is make a larger opening in the water tank and add ice before a run. There are lots of ways to skin those cats!
Pete
-
Great information guys...thanks! More question to come I'm sure!
-Troy
-
OK. Here's my chassis when I was painting it last June. Wayno
-
The last one was in etching primer and this one is in paint. Wayno
-
Now the fun part. You may have noticed the 36" diameter plywood disks mounted on the ends of the chassis to facilitate welding and painting. These were my poor mans rotisserie. This photo is of me strapped in and turned upside down to test belt loading. I figured if it was uncomfortable at this stage it was time to change it. As it turned out, no problem. Wayno
-
One more. Wayno
-
Shoulda found a near by hill to give it the "true" rollover test. Looks real good Wayno
-
Wayno, wow, great test and the lakester looks good. One question, did you come a couple of inches out of the seat? It was hard to tell from the pictures. If so, snug those belts tighter....
I don't think I have heard of anyone else doing an intentional roll over test.... quite cool
-
"Shoulda found a near by hill to give it the "true" rollover test. Looks real good Wayno "
Cap'n T we SC guys are adverse to Pencil rolls they have NASTY  consequences.
-
Stainless, I think I stayed glued to the seat pretty good. Frank, if it's all the same to you I believe I'll pass on that downhill test. Besides, I'm not tearing this heap apart until after next season. Wayno
-
What I really want to see is a video of the bail out. I'm sure I'd be built in there for life! :-D :-D :-D
Nice job bye the way and I do like the application of the plywood.
Pete
-
Good call on the upside down, I hope you had some help?!
Reminds me of my first words to my pal Mike after we rolled his Jeep and were upside down Mike, put your hand on the roof BEFORE undo..............." THUNK OWW! "Nevermind Mike." :-D
-
You shoulda taken it to the park. Kids woulda PAID to get to roll down the hill in it......
-
That puts a whole new 'twist' on sitting in the car, and making vroom-vroom noises!
-
lol
-
How do you exit that cockpit?
-
Carefully :-D
G
-
How do you exit that cockpit?
I designed this thing with thoughts of getting out easy. The hatch opening is a few inches in front of bar above the steering wheel so I can grab it and pull. There is a crossbar on the floor to place my feets on. It's really quite easy. After dealing with getting out of the Kelly & Hall Lakester (I sure miss Jack and Jerry ) so many times with great difficulty I paid a lot of attention to this detail. Wayno
-
Here's a shot from last night with the tail end buttoned up. With the push bar on it gives me room to bring the lower tail back further. That'll be a little later though. Right now it's just getting it running and drivable. Then the fine tuning starts. :-D Wayno
-
Wayno,
How big is that chute tube (dia)?
It look kind of like the rear of mine.
John
-
John, it's 6" diameter. Wayno
-
This has been a long time coming - Thanks for posting, Wayno.
Before this year is out, I think I'll have a bookmark on every build here . . .
-
Wayno, I also know you have been working on this for a long time. Can you give some of us newer guys a bit of the backstory? How you got involved with Jack. The story about the tank/molds and how this car came to be?
-

Hey Trent, we're only just tickling his belly yet...if we try to flip him onto the bank this early we might lose him..
-
One more. Wayno
Nice! :-D

It runs. :-o Wayno
-
It runs. :-o Wayno
That's a plus - A push truck will only get you going so fast! :-D
-
Where is the you tube with sound --- :? don't be selfish and keep it all to yourself
-
It runs. :-o Wayno
So, um, Wayno, are we gonna have get the digital info via smoke signal from Salina or are you going to carve into onto a stick with some binary whittlin' and get someone to ride it out?
-
Time spent learning how to make movies is time spent away from making this heap work. That being said, I'll try. Wayno
-
That puts a whole new 'twist' on sitting in the car, and making vroom-vroom noises!
Don't you mean ɯooɹʌ ɯooɹʌ ɯooɹʌ ɯooɹʌ
Did anyone mention that if you wanted to build a tank like Wayno's , you only have to ask and he can supply you a fiberglass tank body
and a couple of frame rails that match the curve of the tank
G
-
Great looking build! What is the length of the tanks you sell?
-
Great looking build! What is the length of the tanks you sell?
!2'8" and 36" diameter. It's a proper P-38. I also have 20" extension panels since you asked about the length. Wayno
-
Thanks Wayno, I `m thinking about building another one and I need more room this time. I`ll contact you later if I decide to do that.
Thanks, Jeff
-
Don't you mean ɯooɹʌ ɯooɹʌ ɯooɹʌ ɯooɹʌ
Okay, I could make a fistfull of "down under" jokes right now, but let me cut to the chase . . .
Grummy, how did you do that?
-
It leaks. Water in cylinders 2 and 3. I didn't take any movies of that either. More later. Wayno
-
Two holes about 3/8" diameter. One in each cylinder about 4 1/2" down the bore. Right now I'm thinking about sleeving them to get through the season. Not sure yet. Wayno
-
Hey Wayno
Happy Birthday OK
G
-
You going to sleeve the 2 cylinders or go further Wayno?
Do you know someone that can sonic test the block for you?
If you've struck water in a couple cylinders you got to be a bit suss on the rest of them.
jon
-
Thanx Grumm. Somehow I made it to 65 in spite of myself. :-P Jon, That's what I'm thinking. I have a few blocks stashed away and I'm pulling them out today. I'm going to go over everything carefully before I do something stoopid and costly. The $300 to do a couple of sleeves on a suspect motor could go a long way to boring another block that I'm more comfortable with. I bought that motor for the express purpose of not having to build one while I was building the car. Wayno
-
Happy birthday bud hope yer eatin somethin good to celebrate......

Maybe porkchops on the plate, but that P38 is lightning in a bottle.
Happy Birthday, Wayno.
I agree with Jon, especially if you've got spare blocks. It'll be a PITA, but you'll know where it stands when you hit the salt.
The build is too fine to roll with a question mark that big.
-
Hunh? How'd I do that?
-
Wayno,Happy Birthday my friend.
Wow -- you're that old? I'm still a loooooongway from that magic number -- turning 64 in four days.
Happy Birthday, and many (more) happy returns of the day from both Nancy and me.
Nancy's moved in with Glen? (Nice job of editing, Jon).
Happy birthday, Boy Racer!
Mike
-
Is this better?
Wayno, Happy Birthday my friend.

Does this mean Glen isn't wishing me a Happy Birthday? Wayno
-
Wayno I do and I did and someone edited it. Wish we were a little closer so we could have a beer as well.
Have a great birthday Wayno
-
Aw c'mon Glen. It's a great day for a $3.60/gallon drive. Wayno
-
Happy Birthday Wayno, wasn't sure if Grum was just taking the Plymouth.
Bummer about the motor if you bought it and wasn't something you had laying about.
You know what's going to happen now, bore = new piston= may as well bump the compression =should tidy up the ports = a bit more cam = if I'm going to turn it harder I should do something with the bottom end and oil system.
Never can get the worms back in once you open it up.
jon
-
Happy Birthday Wayno. You're going to have to hurry to catch me.
Ron
-
Happy Bday. Hard to believe I first met you 10 years ago!
-
Happy birthday, Wayno!
Sorry to hear about the engine!
Planning on come through there on Friday, headed to El Mirage-That going to work for you?
-
G'day Wayno,
Even though we have never "met", I'd like to join the rest and also wish a Happy Birthday
I've long held an aspiration to build a tank, though with an I6 engine (most likely the 270 cube GMC I have tucked away in the shed). Could you give me an idea of what your 'glass tanks, rails and extension panels (I might need them if I'm going to use an I6 engine) are priced at. I guess the biggest problem would be getting them "downunder"
Cheers,
Pete
-
Really? Not possible you are that Advanced (in age ,that is.... ...) Happy Birthday!
-
. I guess the biggest problem would be getting them "downunder"
Cheers,
Pete
Might have some space in a container
Hey Wayno
Don't you have a bunch of motors sitting a shed somewhere
G
G
-
Thanx for the Birthday wishes everyone. I spent the day assessing the motor deal and I'm thinking I'll go with a different block. I've got 3 or 4 canditates sitting here of which I shall inspect thoroughly. The only reason I considered sleeving was the possibility of running in May at El Mirage. Well, that ain't gonna happen with everything else I still have to do on the car and now this. Man, things were sure feeling good when that thing fired last week. That was a real "car activity" instead of just a bunch of parts bolted together in my shed. Looks like Speedweek now. Pete, I'll send you a PM. Wayno
-

If it all went according to plan, what fun would that be?
I defy you to find a build diary on these boards where everything went right.
Salvage what you can, go bore out one of those blocks, and run like the devil.
Chris
-
A good friend has offered to loan me a motor or short block, whichever works out. Don't count me out yet. 8-) Wayno
-
Good news Wayno, the thrash continues with renewed drive?
-
Yeah Jon. And the renewed drive starts with a 1,000 mile drive to pick it up. Then the thrash gets going. I've still got a lot to do but I think I can I think I can I think I can I think I can. Wayno
-
(http://i361.photobucket.com/albums/oo58/milwaukeemidget/yodapiechart.jpg)
May the Ford be with you.
-
I picked up the motor and returned home yesterday. I unloaded it today and started assembly. I also took it upon myself to check out that lakebed in Western Utah on my trip home. 2 really good miles of very usable dirt plus some runoff if I need it. Lots more solid than El Mirage. It'll be good for testing. Wayno

Wonder if that is the lake I have been spying on maps and online?

Wayno,
No hassle from the BLM is you test on that dry lake?? Or is it a don't ask and see if you can get away with it?
Rex

You're the only one who knows about it so if i have any trouble I'm coming to you. :-D Wayno
-
The BLM cause no problems on Dry Lake Alvord in Oregon as long as it isn't
advertised as an organized event. It did not require a permit.
Marlo Treit and I were there one weekend and the ultralighters
and 4 wheelers were having a blast. They even camp overnight.
FREUD

And Wayno, if you need someone to run interference for you, I work for porter.

Glenn, that's pretty much the way I was seeing it. Chris, all my time and money are going into racing car right now. No beer for you. Wayno

Well, hmmm . . . I suppose that means you'll be kinda thirsty by September. Stop by the pit - I'll introduce you to Single Hive Initiative Mead.

Sounds utterly wonderful. Wayno

Hey Wayno,
I'm supposed to tell you some guy is spreading runors about you and your car! :-D

It runs again. :-D I borrowed a short block from a friend of mine and hung all of my stuff on it and it's back in the car and running. Woo hoo. Wayno
-
Good stuff Wayno, now where were you before you struck water?......
Cheers
jon

Nice work Wayno, what's next on list?
-
Controls. Throttle, shifter cable. I have to finish tidying up my cockpit. I'm down to just a couple billion little things now. Wayno

All you can do is try to make sure the list gets shorter as you go.
I've taken to hiding my pens.

When Elmo finishes a bucket list item on the tank he opens a cold beer and counts the caps at the end of the day.

a case a day is not the end, as the booze laws in Utah suck one must be well stocked

G
It's an MG - I simply take my finger and stick it in the oil that's accumulated on the garage floor and smear it across the item I'm checking off.
Learned that trick from a Harley builder.
-
I understand perfectly
I have had the misfortune of having to work on a BSA that seems to have been dumped in my workshop
I started it on Wednesday and it promptly filled the workshop with smoke. When it stopped, what oil had not come out the exhaust was
now underneath it

Only 999,999 things left Wayno, got it beat now.

-
Very nice Wayno
+1 on Tman's question, do you make the nose screen yourself?
Thanks
jon

Marvelous windshield. The reflections from the light tubes are as straight as a string.
Good Job.
FREUD
-
Wayno, you going to the lakes, if so see you there.
-
The windscreen is actually a glycol modified polyethylene terephthalate (PETG). I had it formed by Aircraft Windshield in Los Alamitos, California. It was on their suggestion that I use that material because it has the properties of Lexan with better optical clarity and formability. For the record, they were really good to work with and I'm happy as a clam. :-D Glenn, the light lines carry right on through on the body. You're right. They're very good. Glen, I'll be at El Mirage. I'm hitching a ride with Buddy and the Fladhead Cad. I have starting line duty Saturday morning and I'll be at the White Goose Bar. Wayno
-
See you next week!
-
Thanks Wayno.
Iv'e just will started emaling a guy in South Aus about making a canopy, I will see if he can do canopies in PETG.
Thanks
jon
-
Jon, for the record I supplied them with a male mold for the screen. The mold has to go a couple inches beyond the edge that you want to end up with so you don't have wrinkles in that area. Also the process used is drape forming because it gives better optics than drawing the sheet into a mold. I used a mold that I got from Jack Kelly and carefully blocked it down to 320 grit. Oops. They proceeded to rough it up with 40 grit so the felt wouldn't slide around and bunch up. I had forgotten that part of the process. Wayno
-
Before cockpit construction is complete, you may consider engineering a small holder to house an "A" harmonica
for use while waiting in line. Of course there is always the chance it may not pass technical inspection. Ha
Hopefully we have a date to Boogie again, at the Cook meet.
BR
Drew Gatewood
-
Absolutely, Drew. Wayno
-
It's got a beer can holder, what more do you need.
-
Wayno, did the SCTA approve the PETG or are you going to show up at tech and convince them it is OK?
-
Thanks Wayno
Not sure if I will get something done here or over there.
First response from the guy I contacted didn't seem that exciting, I will hunt around here a bit more.
I'm still a bit off needing it.
Thanks

He might be worth a try

According to 3.U I'm good to go. To answer your question, yes I will present it at inspection. I see no problem. Wayno

Here's the screen mounted. It actually went quite well. Oh, I sent off my Speedweek entry yesterday. :-D Wayno
-
Thats nice
-
"Oh, I sent off my Speedweek entry yesterday."
You and 300 others. Better pray the postmark is right.
-
Well, Wayno -- at least you didn't wait 'til the last minute before sending in your entry. Mine got to California a few days ago, I think - I hope. Sent it one day last week.
By the way, I hear that registration so far is about 360 vehicles. Maybe Stan knows better and will tell us the truth.
-
Too early to post a number -- speaking of posting, more than 50% come in around/after the deadline. Takes a while for the P.O. to get 'em here. That's why the SCTA is like the IRS, besides taking a lot of your money.
-
Grumm,
Bet that "A" harmonica get's crossed to"E" harp.
hitz
-
It most certainly does. Wayno

Got my 'chute latch working. Kinda looks like an 1890 steam engine. Wayno

Will this work for you?

Grumm Grumm Grumm..........
Any good tech inspector should know that a tea cosy is NFI I mean SFI rated not Snell.
Sorry Wayno;
Is the canopy in front of the main rollbars?
So to get out you shift your but forward sit upright and the it's straight above you?
Thanks
jon

Jon, when you say canopy, do you mean the hatch? Walrus, I was going to give Aircraft Windshield a call to freshen up on "care and feeding" of my screen. Wayno
-
Yes Wayno.
-
OK Jon. There are 2 roll bars over my head and another forward of the hatch. Actually, the hatch opening is a few inches in front of the roll bar so I can grab it to exit.. Does that help? :-D Wayno

Great build thread Wayno, was a pleasure visiting with you Sat at El Mirage. Took your advise and joined the forum, looks like it will be a great place to learn.

I got the hatch built hinged latched and mostly fitted. I just got fully suited (again) to make sure I could exit the car in its' current configuration. I work on the premise that I know nothing and constantly check stuff. Anyway, my biggest concern has always been getting my helmet under the roll hoop to get out. Losing 15 pounds made it a snap. Oh, and the machine shop called to inform me that my block passed magnaflux and pressure test. Yippeee. 8-) Wayno
-
OK. Since I've made such an effort to isolate the cockpit from the engine compartment, the thought of running a pressurized oil line to run an oil pressure guage into said cockpit leaves me cold. Would I be better off with an electric guage? Wayno

Good question, hot oil not good. How about a guage in the back for tuning and a pressure sensor with an OH CRAP light up front for you? Pondering these things myself.

I'm only putting a set of idiot lights up front, for the motor will be red for oil pressure, yellow for coolant temp and "burn your eyes red" for knock, no lights = good.
Simple and you don't need to look.

Just tie a rag around your leg under the gauge. oh , hang on, wrong car.
Put a gauge down the back somewhere so you can look at it when you are tuning it. Just a red light in the front for oil with a high pressure (more than 10 psi) switch, and a different color shift light, and a tacho. Doesn't matter where you put the tacho as you will not be able to see it
If you see a red light come on, switch the motor off and turn out, if you see the other color light, change gear.

He's couldn't be righterer. Theres a shipload going on at speed and there are two important pieces of info....."change gear" and "turn it off" are the two things you need to know.......my last run in our car demanded most of my available wits to keep it pointed in the right direction, that was likely due to the motor beating itself to death and the flywheel trying to escape but either way the lights didn't come on and I ran a good speed. Now, if I'd had gauges and been watching the oil pressure I definitely wouldn't have run that speed, but we would have had an intact motor. We've built a much better motor for under 4 grand.......Win!
Get idiot lights, the two seconds you spend focusing on a gauge could be lethal.

Thanx guys. With any luck I'm smart enough for idiot lights. :-P Wayno

If you position those lights vertically on top of the dash so they reflect on the windshield, you'll have a "Heads-Up" display so you won't even have to take your eyes off the track.

True Dat. We are to the point on Amy's car that the lights are getting put on during our down time so that all she has to look at is the big tach, big speedo (She'still working on her licensing) and the track.

Not sure if your running or interested in a knock sensor Wayno.
Detonation is the surest way to kill a motor IMHO and with a bit happening, the motor behind me with tanks and stuff between it and my ears I want something visual.
This is what I've bought for mine; http://www.viatrack.ca/ (http://www.viatrack.ca/)
I haven't used it so cannot say if it is reliable or not, I was also given the schematics to build one by the guy I bought my dyno off.

Little T was sitting here admiring your tank. His 5 year old gearhead eyes told him that your car was cool and looked like one of his hotwheels.
-
Hey Wayno, My name is Mike and i bought one of your tanks W/the extensions about 4yrs ago. Your build looks great!!! Do you actually have the side rails that conform to the shell that you could sell me so i could get my butt in gear and start this long diserved project? I always stop by on the Salt to say hi and see how things are a goin! Are you considering any room inside the tank for added weight (lead ballast) to keep her planted on the Salt ?I would love to see your tank this year!! Mike
-
Mike, if you have a way to get them home from Speedweek I'll bring you some. Good to hear from you. Yes, my Tank will be at Speedweek. Wayno

Wayno, Yes i do have a way to get them back from Speedweek. That was a great idea. :-D PM me and let me know what the cost is. Ill send it to ya before ya leave for the salt. Thanks again buddy.Mike

Yes Sir those guys went fast !!! i was there in 63' when he went ' 289 ' with that small hemi 255 cid i think.
This was before the fairing etc just the 6-71 and 4 port hilborn with the oval grey scoop, a real race car looking good in the nice yellow paint job.
Not sure how much faster a tank has gone since, also his was stock length too.
When he stuck it in top gear he lit up the rear's and i will never forget hearing it freewheel, wow was that cool !!
Like the rear shot of your tank too , what color will you paint it?
Don the tank fan
-
Wayno, Did you stretch your tank at all? It dosent look like you did. So are you semi comfortable in the tank when its buttoned up? I was wondering if there was enough room without a stretch? I will be almost prone also in mine. I guess it just depends on what you use as drive train, water tank ect. The rear shot of your car looks great!! Whats the record in your class? Cant wait to see it.. Mike
-
Don, it's already blue. :-D Mike, yes it's stretched roughly 20". It is really comfortable. We'll get you in it at Speedweek. Wayno

When I talked to you, you were over 120 mph on your runs. What did you end up with for a top speed?

I meant blown...

Nice looking tank, had the opportunity to look at it one morning before our daily thrash... I think the only pictures I took all week were the sunrise on Friday :-D
Great workmanship, beautiful job Wayno

I meant blown...
Actually Ralph I noticed you put "blow" and I thought "gee, he sounds just like a good ol boy" , from Preston ,
I hung with Wayno , Gus and crew for a fair bit of time during the week, rode in the push car, buttoned up the body and helped a little round the pit, picked him up on the return road., met his great daughter Brook and her husband ....I got a few runs on the GoPro which can be edited into something reasonable..
Then we went and stayed in Salina for two nights and did a bit of a tour around the valley, I ate steak for breakfast the first day then we had Wayno's well known apricot smoked steak for dinner, we had a great time , yet again, there
Good on ya brother you've done really well, can you , er send me some squash( running joke people  )

Wayno, that smile was bigger than ever! Nice to chat with you.

It was a 24 hour bug of some kind, allowing me to sleep through the day's webcast along with everyone else out in listeining land.
My wife called tonight, asking when I'd be home. I told her the 12th, 12th of Neveruary, that is. Just kidding. I have some stops to make on the way to Interstate 40, which runs right through Webster Groves. I'll get home eventually, but there is a bike chassis to look at in Tulsa.
Played HQ Rear Window earlier today.

MM, seems music is not my forte this time, what with the announcing team here. However, I'll try to remember to start with it in the a.m., but definitely toss it in the juke box if the course shuts down for a clean up or something. I'm out of lager, no one comes to visit 'cept Grumm who I learned is the bike guy in the crowd, so a few lies and damn lies eminate from my grizzled pie hole.

I was able to spend a short time in Wayno's pit and experience his joy at how his tank performed. He was the perfect picture of a happy man. Had a smile wider than the Grand canyon and as giddy as a 10 year old with a new pony! Congrats my friend, you may not have been the fastest man on the salt this year but I challenge anyone to find a more pleased or happy one!
-
Congratulations Wayno, you've got to be happy with that.
Everything work the way you wanted?
The obvious question; what now?......
Congratulations

Jon, I'm building a motor right now. This Speedweek was about sorting the car out, which went well. Now it's time to turn up the wick. It went straight as a string with very little steering input. The shifter went out of adjustment and we did a little modification on it. I had to change a head gasket (which I knew about beforehand). Unfortunately, I forgot to bring a replacement. Before I knew it a set was offered to me from the Pierce Boys out of Indiana. Darn guys wouldn't accept anything for them. Thanx guys. McCain and Houtz came through too. All in all it was a great week. Everyone at the White Goose Bar was super as usual. It was good seeing you, Doug. Wayno

So glad you were able to finish your engine in time to run #404 at El Mirage.
I’ve watched and listened to the video that 38flattie posted over and over. Can’t wait to hear it in person
Now that you have all the horses hooked up and pointed in the same direction all you need to do is figure out exactly how much to feed them, give ’em a little kick, and hold on!

Wayno, Do you know what the drag coefficient is on your car or a like type Fiberglass tank?? I am now starting mine and trying to decide on a few things of which way to go. Im trying to make it as slippery as possible. I noticed on your car you ran the front axle under the car rather than through the body. Does that help the areo under the body? Or is that what you had so you used it? Thanks,Mike Fuller
-
Mike, that axle location offered nothing in the way of reduced drag. There will be further streamlining as I go along. This is just the starting point. I have nothing in the way of CD numbers. Maybe one of the grown ups around here do. :-D Wayno
-
The only time I've seen mention of such a drag coefficient was in a chart of "representative" values, ranging from .08 (Auto Union Special) to 1.13 (barn door/flat plate). Belly tankers were around .9, if I remember right.
-
The tank probably has good aero numbers, it those darn wheels and axles you hang on them that screw all that up.
It's a Lakester thing...

Yesterday I took the Tank for a test drive. I sorted out the problem I had at the November El Mirage meet of no high gear in my C-4. Turned out to be a linkage thing. I swapped the gears in my quickchange to bring the ratio waaaaaaay down so I could make a low speed pass and still get into 3rd. Everything went off without a hitch. :-D As it stands I think I'm just going to get ready for Speedweek. I'd like to run El Mirage but at 6 mpg in Gus's truck the way they have gas prices these days I think I'll put the money in the car. I'll still go but in a more economical vehicle. I'm relieved a bout the trans. Wayno

Wiring is happening. 8-) Wayno

I thought I had a worm can.
But when it comes to wiring, I'd always rather start from scratch than try to make something out of something else.
I'm thinking you'll need to be fitted for a hat in a few weeks!

All white wire? You'll regret that! :-D

Yea, you coulda used yellow... :-D

Our B52's used all white wires but they had numbers printed on them so you could tell what was on them and where they went.

Wayno is building a B-52................................. with wheels.

It may not be a B-52, but it's certainly the bomb!

It's either that or a bad and ugly one. Bob, that was just what I had in mind......

Fast forward to last night and the tank's on my dyno. It's almost too big to use which is a common Milers problem BTW.
-
Don't they have Dyno's in Utah?
Or was Wayno just driving past
G
-
You know Wayne -- he was just showing it off at El Mirage this weekend. Showing a better way to do things that Henry never thought of. I even sat in it. Comfy, but a tank is not on my horizon.
-
Comfy
Indeed - I was given the opportunity to recline in it in 2013.
I almost took a nap . . .
(http://i361.photobucket.com/albums/oo58/milwaukeemidget/Bonneville%202013/414_zpsee81a52f.jpg) (http://s361.photobucket.com/user/milwaukeemidget/media/Bonneville%202013/414_zpsee81a52f.jpg.html)
LeBron James could fit in this thing.
So the wiring must be working - unless Wayno just decided to test fit the car on the dyno.
I don't think that's likely.
So if the wiring is working, it stands to reason that the engine is running.
I think that's likely.
And if the engine is running, and the car is on the dyno, it stands to reason that the car made some pulls.
That, too, I think was likely.
And if the car made some pulls, it stands to reason that there were some horsepower numbers generated.
Given Nate's professionalism, I doubt there was trouble recording data, so once again, I think it's likely some numbers have been generated.
And therefore, it stands to reason that we'd love to know what those numbers were . . .
But given Wayno's cunning smile and secretive ways, will we see those numbers?
Not likely.
Lookin' fantastic, Wayno!
-
Wayne visited with me on the starting line at El Mirage as we were getting ready to make a pass Sunday morning. He indeed said that "Most" of the wiring was complete. So with the picture of it on the dyno speaks well for him getting the final bits needed to see how the tuneup is.
Best of luck Wayne. Good to see you. 8-)

Was there ever any doubt?
And the numbers are . . .
There's always a doubt when you're doing something like a custom adaptation of an engine management system onto a vintage engine. This isn't a sbc where you just drop on some parts, connect up the wiring harness and start making dyno pulls. I know a lot of people think EFI means it just turns on and tunes itself but that's far from reality. Without getting into details, this is going to be one of my more challenging tuning experiences and my focus is getting a good, safe basic tune in as few pulls as possible as a starting point that can then be dialed in on the track.
I'll let you guys know how it goes this weekend but I wouldn't expect to see any significant hp numbers as I'm not tuning this thing pull after pull after pull to wring out every last bit of power that it can make.
-
That approach fits right in with my thinking. Sparkplug Gary (Whom did the not only beautiful but well engineered wiring job) is scheduled to assist Nate with the dyno pulls tomorrow. I understand Mang and Per are going with him. Thanx everyone. Wayno
-
Nate, I saw Gary's work on the tank in September, the evolution of the rest of the build, Wayno's ubercustom trick F1 style manifold, and then I saw it was in your hands.
Nate, I remain doubtless.

Thanks Chris.

On Sunday I was pulling hard in third at about the mile when it shut off. According to data I was doing 135 at that time. I am encouraged because this is only the second pass on the new setup and I had a throttle stop set at 80%. By the way, I drove down last Monday because vacuum sucked the top of the plenum in on the dyno last Sunday. I effected the repairs and made it to the races. I'm home but whipped. When I say whipped, I just mean tired. I assure you, I ain't whipped. Wayno

The one thing that bothers me about your sucking in the top of the plenum is that there must have been some restriction in the intake path to cause such a high vacuum. Have you looked into what caused the vacuum? Too small or too restrictive air cleaners are often the cause. There's definitely some horsepower hidden there.
Pete
-
Pete, that would have been because the throttle body was closed. It is on the plenum and the first thing the air sees. There are no butterflies or anything after that. The air has a clear path to the valve. The failure was due to a problem with my building. I used aluminum pop rivets in a structural area. I forgot that aluminum pop rivets are merely decorative trim. Wayno

While I have your attention I'd like to point out that this week couldn't have happened without the help of Ray Federowicz, John Romero, Sparkplug Gary, Steve Otten, Nate Stewart, Mike Manghelli, Rick Yacoucci, Doug Robinson and Gus. They were all there when the chips were down. I owe 'em big. Wayno

You're right Wayno, aluminum "Pop" rivets are well named. All of us get caught out on that sort of thing once in a while. Most of us don't make the mistake the second time. It's called experience! :-D :-D :-D

Elmo;
Try using AVEX rivets. They are far better than common Pop rivets but use the same tool to install them. Reasonable price from Aircraft Spruce.

Kind Doctor, sir. Perhaps you'll explain to those of us north of you -- just what Herb Alpert's album cover has to do with Wayno's car. I think I might still have that album. . .
Just yesterday I received the two new pieces of hardware for the 'puter. One will hold 35mm slides for digitalising (my word) for the cormputer, and the other is a turntable so I can put the dozens, nay hundreds, of records into the machine here. Just think: I'll soon be able to listen to the Mystic Moods Orchestra and Benny Goodman's Carnegie Hall concert featuring the long version of "Sing, song, sing". My complete collection of Jefferson Airplane and some Andy Warhol and "Power Tools" by I don't remember. I searched and the machine came up with Ronald Shannon Jackson as the force behind the band, but I saw that it was a one and only album - and there was no song on it that I recognised. I guess, therefore, it's time for me to submit this post.
-
Jon, I know the cold weather slows thinking.... Wayno was a little whipped.... if you need more help, ask Nancy
-
Fortunately for us, the weather isn't cold during this snowy storm. It's now evening -- and the temp has plummeted all the way down to 27F. The problem with that is the snow is so wet and sticky that it clogs the output chute of the snow thrower repeatedly when I'm throwing the snow. Frequently like three or four times with the little 'thrower - and again a few times with the bigger machine. At least it didn't clog when I was using the BIG snow thrower -- the one that's 66" wide and powered by a 56 hp turbo diesel. That one worked okay - 'cept that one leg of the electric control cable is farkled and so I couldn't re-aim or re-deflect the output. Poo!

Hey Stainless. Get off Slim's back. :x He doesn't need any old cold weather to slow his brain down. I got your back, Jon. Wayno

Neil, I'll look into those rivets though I doubt I'll be using them in this instance. It's time for something more substantial. Wayno
Wayno;
The 1/8" dia AVEX rivets have a shear strength of 165 lbs and a tensile strength of 230 lbs. The 3/16" dia ones are 1090 lbs and 715 lbs. I doubt if either of those would fail.
Regards, Neil Tucson, AZ
-
Neil, I'm not questioning the rivet strength. I'm talking about maybe going to a heftier housing. Wayno
-
Upon further review, I was going 140 when it shut off. That's even better. :-) Wayno
-
And that was only what, 3/4 down the track? That's pretty alright for a second shake down run on a new EFI system.
-
That's pretty much what I'm thinking, Nathan. Not to mention the 80% throttle stop. Right at the last I was picking up 10 mph every 3 seconds and just coming in to my designed power band. Potential seems to be there. I think I'm going to really enjoy this AEM Infinity. I've already learned a lot. Wayno

OK. I finally got in a couple of decent passes at El Mirage so now I will have some data to build on. I ran 134 on Saturday and 136 on Sunday. Sunday's run was plagued by a miss and when we pulled the plugs there was oil on 3 of them. Rather than hurt the motor I pulled the plug. I figure I got what I needed so I'll get it sorted for Speed Week. I drove home happy. Wayno

Oiling plugs? :|

fingers crossed!!!!!
-
What are you running for rings?
Mark and I were talking last night about mapping EFI and ignition from scratch, which is what you're doing.
He mentioned that if you "rattle" the engine a little lean or with too much timing during dial in, with iron rings, you're more likely to break them.
Are all the oiled plugs on the same bank?
I'm hoping Sid is right.
-
Synthetic oil? if so, did you run it in with regular oil first?
Just stabbin' in the dark while you figure out what's going on.
-
Mark, I am in a position to put some heat into it at this point and so shall. And thanx everyone. it is helpful. Wayno
-
Checking it cold is good enough to tell you "If" there's a problem & where it is without running it & possibly doing more damage.
And hurry the hell up Mate, we're obviously all hanging on the edge of our seat's here! :-D
Sid.
-
It is a good idea to look at the bores with a borescope before you run the engine. Marks in the glaze over the hone marks on the cylinder walls will show you if rings are broken. Sometimes, if you are lucky and catch the problem early, it is possible to replace the broken parts and to hone the bores.
-
OK. I bought a dopey Harbor Freight leakdown tester. The instructions make no sense and neither do the numbers. That being said, I checked all the cylinders the same way and they all acted the same. Compression check showed 140 accross the board with the exception of the one (as it turns out, there is just one) oil cylinder which is 160. I think I'll pull that cylinder head and have a look. :| Wayno
-
I borrowed my buddy's SnapOn leak tester for years. Finally got embarrassed and bought the HF piece of shitt. The instructions made no sense and neither did the numbers. Back to borrowing again. I don't feel too bad -- he's driving the car.
-
I would expect if it is not a ring problem that the oiled cylinder would have better compression... oil is a good seal... back in my tractor mechanic days that is how we sorted leaking valves from bad rings... add oil and check again. So does that thing have valve seals? Been a long time since I looked at the trailing edge of technology underhead valve engines.
-
It has seals on the intakes. Wayno

Like I said earlier, take a look at the intake port for oil trace. Some of us knew it was a flathead. Not having a big enough breather might be a problem or you could have a pan windage issue. A bad oil ring won't show up on a compression test either.
Work out how the oil is getting there, either down the port or up the bore.
Sid.
-
I've pretty much decided to pull the head and the intake. I want to run the valves anyway. They're really not bad to pull in the car. Wayno
-
Ladies and gentlemen, my engineering consultant . . . :-D
Did that just happen?
-
I'm going to cut him a little slack on this one - he's met so many folks here in the last two years with so many different projects that it's tough to keep 'em straight without a score card.
When I was about 18, two of my high school buddies, John and Tim, were working on one of John's van. I pulled in and asked Tim if he could do me a favor and check the coolant level on my car.
He spent about 5 minutes on that Corvair . . .
-
Following FB's advice... Pull the valve cover (intake manifold) and check the seal for damage
Damn underhead valve motors have different terminology for the same thing
-
It's all good Mark. It is incumbent upon me to weed through "suggestions" for viability before doing any disassembly. :-) Not only do I not have rocker covers, I don't have any rockers to cover. I woke up in the middle of the night to this revellation; The seals on the intakes on a Flathead Ford are on the body of the guide, not on the valve stem. So, "to the question "Do I have valve seals?" Not so much. The plot thickens. Wayno
-
Stan, don't give up on the leakdown tester. It actually works, it's the instructions that are incorrect. I went to the HF site and read reviews of the tester and the proper procedure was outlined. My readings (cold) are pretty much in line with each other with the offending cylinder dead center on the values. :-) I'll continue but I want to establish as many baseline values as I can. I'm learning. Wayno
-
Mark, the leakdown readings (cold) were all fairly close in the 12% range. I'm waiting for some other things to happen before I can tear it down. It shouldn't be long. I did snake a tie wrap through the sparkplug hole on the offending cylinder and it came back with oil on the tip. OK. Not much information but it all adds up. Wayno
-
a wag is that it's sucking oil though a leak in the intake.
-
Just more cannon fodder for you Wayno.
Since you have individual coils are you sure the plug is firing? If the spark plug is not firing it would allow oil in the cylinder but still keep leak down readings normal. Just a thought, should be easy to check before tearing stuff down.
-
I have to pull the intake to adjust the valves so I'll keep my eyes peeled for evidence. I'll look into the coil too. Thanx guys. Wayno
-
Is the oil ring on the piston? Us older guys sometime forget stuff.
-
Yes. Wayno

have you started digging for oil yet :-D

Progress. I pulled the head on the offending side and everything looked fine. I pulled the intake manifold and gave a cursory inspection and saw nothing wrong. No misplaced () oil or anything. Waitaminit. The intake valve is veeeery far from the lifter. Turns out the adjustable lifter had taken it upon itself to re- adjust itself to .117" instead of a more comfortable .012". I'll look to see if this caused any damage and go on from there. Next year maybe these adjustables will be gone. I'd like that. At least it's not pure mystery any more. Wayno
-
That is a good thing :-D
-
It's a wonder you didn't hear that clattering! Check the lifter & the lobe for damage.
So we're assuming the wet plug is dead cylinder fuel? :?
You might have to start running the valves during a meet until you know they're staying put.

Mark, there are no locknuts. I have considered that addition, though. When the parts store opens I'll have a look. Wayno
-
The parts store had no locknuts so I made one on my mill (12" Harbor Freight Disk Sander). Wayno
-
Hi Wayno
I always use locktite on the lifter adjuster threads I find that works perfectly even in our extreme environment on these all out racing flatheads. Even with a set of lifters that's already been run in oil and still in the block I just hit the treads with brake cleaner and set a drop on the lifter body the locktite still holds well. For extremely loose adjusters the green stuff will keep them in adjustment.
For my flathead I check the valve adjustment after three good runs. That is if and when the speed gods allow three good runs in a row! :-)
Ron
-
Thanx Ronnie. It is noted. Are you coming to Speedweek? Wayno
-
Yes Wayno I'm heading to Speed Week its time for me to get some salt on the race car tires and get my rookie runs in. My to do list is getting shorter each day but it seems there's still lots to do. Big project at the moment is to finish assembling the engine the internal parts from the engine I tested with this year are going into a fresh crack free 8BA block.Well its crack free until it runs at least.
The must bring list is rather large with a 2400 mile journey ahead of us I want to be sure I have enough stuff to keep running and not leave anything behind. There's a group of us heading out so my support team will be large enough to help deal with whatever. My crew chief is my son without his help this would not take place and my wife is also coming with her support she makes this all happen. My wife gave the car its name the Mistress :-)

Hey Wayno,
Since I'm gnu hear and a slow reader (ask Stan), I've finally read through this post. Knee-Toe.

After Speed Week got cancelled, Pork Pie had some spare time on his hands. He used it to good advantage and stopped by the RODGE MAHAL. While here, he gave me some pointers on my streamlining efforts for the race car. While I made adjustments he designed a scoop and made a cardboard example. In the past few weeks I made the inner ducting and am now building the outer piece. I'm looking forward to testing them at El Mirage in a few weeks. Wayno

Here is the inner ducting and support. Wayno

Bill, the throttle body is 18" from the inlet opening. The internal ducting is the one picture I posted. No turning vanes. Wayno
