THIS IS ABOUT the Bonneville NW REUNION for 2013, not 2012.

The speakers for the www.bonnevillenwreunion.com will be

Although I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting Betty, I had a couple of great talks with Gene five or six years ago and as for Tom, well let me say that he is not only a cordial, well spoken and proud product of Montana (and of course Gene and Betty) but also one smart and deep thinking Cowboy.
When I introduced him to a friend who happens to be the head of Michelin Tires North and South American Aircraft Tires, he later returned to my pit and said, "that guy knows more about Race Tires than any tire manufacturer in the United States, and I know em' all".
I hope many of you can join the likes of Marlo and his gang, the Apple pickers from Central Washinton, and the usual gang of idiots (myself included) in listening to, and learning from two people who in over fifty years on the Salt have exceeded even their own expectations and despite a modest budget, conquered and helped make our sport what it is Today.
Freud created and continues to put up the money to make this event happen (three or so hours away from his home) so lets support him and enjoy a evening you won't soon forget.

On to the Reunion.  Not only will I expect to have you put some information on this Forum, but I'll also put the notice on the home page of the site.  That is -- I'll do that if you send it to me.

Looking forward to another good time. Rizzy is excited to see that Betty and Tom will be speaking. This will our third time to view the Target 550 Streamliner (Washington, Utah and now in Oregon?)

Our check is in the mail.

BTW, as of tonight, Wednesday Feb 9, the Shilo doesn't have the Banquet "in the system" yet. They said to call back in a few days. She didn't know the group room rate either. Don't worry, we will be there if we have to camp out at the bend in the road. Now, that is my kinda room rate.

Keeping in mind that the Hi-lite of the "pre Reunion" will be the "Marlo's presentation", there are other thing's to do on Saturday morning such as a Tour of the Upper Willamete Valley Wineries*, the great Portland Zoo and it's new baby Elephant (don't take one home), and keep in mind that Portland has more Micro-Breweries per capita than any other city in North America (for you Drunken Louses).
Also you might want to visit "world famous" VooDoo Donuts and have a Bacon topped Maple Bar, or hit Pine Mountin Bisquet's (spl?) in PDX.
In Vancouver your best bet is Benny's Hot Rod Cafe on Saint John's road where you can enjopy GREAT FOOD (including Pizza's) while admiring lot's of Speed Memoriabillia on the walls (including a full wall Mural of Bonneville featuring the Geisler/Vail/Hizer Stude, the Macdonald and Pitt's 311 mph Firebird, Ty Baxter's "shoe-box" Comet, and OF COURSE, THE FABULOUS OLD STUD RACING STUDEBAKER!!!!
Also, Old Stud Racing will open its doors to the weak and infirm, around ............. let's say tenish............ serving concoction's that can heal anything but your wallet................ and continue until its almost too late to cross the I-205 Bridge and land in your "plush dining chair" and enjoy listening to Glen (yawn) and Betty and Tom Burkland (hopefully Betty will tell some great embarassing Tom story's)!
Admittion to the "fabulous" Old Stud Racing World Headquarters is FREE, however Women may be both molested and disgusted (I am a Batchelor with three cat's, one Golden Retriever puppy, and the result's can only be described as........... well, let's not go there).
Childen and Pet's (yours) may be eaten and it could get Reeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaly Ugly if Stainless show's up and steals (or is that Steele's) my wallet again and uses my Sponsor's Visa Card on Hooker's as he has been "wont" to do in the past.
                                                                                                                                Ol' One Run, out..................................

* Even famous French Vineyard's including Droughin are now a part of Oregon's World Famous Pinot Industry.................. Dodge, it's Gooooooooooooood!!!

I don't know if Freud has any tours set up for Saturday morning, but if he doesn't, I will see if my friend Jack Coonrod might be willing to open his Private Motor Cycle/Drag Racing Museum again.  He has a 1910 Indian Belt Drive and many other Indian's, Triumphs, BSA's and Vincent's along with several famous drag racing cars.
I may be getting the cart ahead of the horse here, but he owes me a few favors, and I am bigger than him, so let me know if you are interested, and if worst scenario happens, we will storm the doors and see it with or without him..
Hopefully he will forget our last visit where a hung over Stainless tried to mount Jack's Dasheund (Weiner-dog* who incidently won the Weiner-dog Nationals at the local Dog Track  a few years back)................................ Bob

Mom and I are looking forward to meeting many of you in Portland next month for the reunion. Since we have been convinced to do the presentation after dinner on Saturday evening it would be helpful if you have any special interest items you would like included to mention  them here. We will do our best to cover these subjects of interest during the limited time available Saturday. It has become apparent as she and I have discussed the various early racing efforts leading to the first Studebaker, the B210 comp coupe, Trackmaster connection, and finally the 411 streamliner spread over 40+ years of active land speed racing that we are going to have to cut this down and squeeze it to get inside the allocated time frame. There are so many interesting technical details and human interest stories woven into the whole effort. I would also like to leave a reasonable amount of time for questions from the audience at the conclusion of the formal presentation.
Let us know what you would like to hear that has not already been said or published.
Thanks
Tom Burkland

Tom - -

I have a special interest topic to suggest. As you and Betty relate your stories and experiences, don't forget to mention that landracing is a family sport. This is what I'm trying to teach my 11 year old daughter. We have been to Bonneville as spectators for two years and I plan to build something to run after I get all my foreclosure red tape behind me.

In addition, I have promoted my daughter getting the autographs of as many female drivers as possible to show her how well they are doing against the boys. Betty is a great example for this. I predict my daughter will develop the love of the sport as I have and following in my tire marks on the salt.

Looking forward to your visit at the reunion.

Thanks for your comments on my job as a Daddy. You always have nice things to say.

Allow me to suggest something for the banquet. Back in 2011, Ray The Rat developed a short series of photos, perhaps with a sound track, that is used by the Target 550 Team to show their way of saying Thank You to the Burkland Family for their "dedication, motivation and inspiration" to the sport of landracing. I believe you can view these on the Target 550 web site. May I suggest that this would be a great presentation for all to see during the social hour before we eat dinner.

Let me also mention that Tom Burkland sent me a PM about my suggestion to mention the significance of "Family" in their racing history stories, specifically his family and the extended racing family too, that Bonneville is know for.

I was impressed he went out of his way to communicated with me. Here he is, someone who is at the top of his sport, taking the time to talk with me, me a non-racer (yet), as though I was a fellow competitor that he knew for years. Freud, I believe you made a perfect selection for the speakers at this years banquet.

Good old Ferd pulled another Rabbit out of his Hat last night, which in my opinion resulted in the best Reunion Dinner yet.
The Burkland/Burkland duo can now be bannered as the Best Stage Act to date as They truely complemented each other with a wonderfull Slide Show (thanx Ray the Rat) backed with a full History of the familly's hobby from the late Fifties up to now.
Tom was (as I expected) knowledgable, precise, and to the point, talking at great length about not only what and how goals were accomplished, but also being very analytical of the mistakes they made, and how they learned and fixed them which had all of us glued and at full attention.
Having never met Betty, I figured she was just "Window Dressing"....................  WRONG!
I wish Betty was my neighbor.  She is a delightfull, funny and warm Lady and We all learned that from the very start A VERY IMPORTANT PART of the Burkland Story from building the giant Semi Canopy, to driving and setting records, to being the "point" person in doing the Tire Tests for Mickey Thompson Tire which resulted in all of us having safe and reliable High Speed (over 600 mph) tires available.
When Betty laughs, we all laugh!
They make a great tandem and need to take their show on the road... and Write a Book (hint, hint)... and RUN THE STREAMLINER AGAIN!
Once again, thank you Glen for what you do and have done, thanks to the racers who drove from Calgary, thanks to the Sleazy Flatlanders from Kansas and Colorado who flew in, as did the Hammond's,Tony Thacker and many others.
Let's keep this Tradition alive and I hope that next years speakers are:  THE BURKLANDS!!!!

Well, while ORB covered the bases a little, he hardly touched the surface of what a great presentation Tom and Betty Burkland made.  Those of you that failed to come to the event missed a couple of good presentations, Marlo on Friday and car visit on Sat, and then the "biggie" Saturday night with the Burklands.  I said it multiple times over the years, Tom is one of the luckiest guys in the world... born into a racing family... what any of us wouldn't have given to have a mom and dad like Betty and Gene.  I met them in 78 when Gene ran the Studebaker... didn't know as much about that one as I thought.  Do now.
FeRd, great job getting us all together again... while you provided a full chair Betty and Tom's presentation only required me to use the edge.  Wonderful stories, family, tire spinning, racing... all I can say is WOW!
I know it gets harder and harder to top the last event with the next one... Good luck next year... of course you could try to get them back to tell us more.

Well I suppose it's time for me to give my side of the story.

In 2011 Gene Burkland was inducted into the Dry Lakes Hall of Fame and Betty and Tom accepted the hardware.

For the many years that I have been to Bonneville I had never really connected with the Burklands until

when the 'liner rolled. I went to the trailer and told Gene what I had seen and described the strange action

of the parachutes. That was the largest amount of time I had spent in their pits.

Then at the 2011 Gas Up I was asked to introduce them.  My body of knowledge was limited but I did have an

opinion of what it took to accomplish what they had. Then the two of them took the microphone and in their

low key manner they accepted the award for Gene. The section of them in the Gas Up foto album has a warmth

that is easy to feel. Their acceptance was sincere and moving.  I saw the remaining strength of that team thru

the camera lens.

I talked to both of them after the ceremony was concluded. It was as though I had known them forever. At that

time I started to think of them as the "entertainment" for The Bonneville NW Reunion for 2013.  Durning the past year

Tom and I had some correspondence regarding the Treit and Davenport streamliner. Tom was always so helpful and

he made comments, with his engineering background as the basis for his statements, that were direct hits. It

would have been handy if he was a neighbor to Hume as the car was built.

So I asked them to speak. I know Betty must have figured it was a trap. When I left them to their own to compose their

package I made it as simple as possible. Whatever amount of time you want or need.....it's yours.

They didn't have to use fotos, but they did, they didn't have to draw graphs all they needed to do was tell their story  AND THEY DID.

It was like a family get together after "the folks" just returned from their trip to New York. No glasses tinkling, no chairs

sliding and squealing as the leg slid across the floor, no interruptions by the clean up crew. Just reverent silence.

That silence showed both respect and fascination.

Baseball players frequently describe hitting a homerun as "so easy." When everything is just right success comes easy.

The evening was "so easy" when we had Tom and Betty as our home run hitters.

They just aren't under contract for next year. I wish they were.

I don't know how to thank them with the praise they deserve.

FREUD

OK you folks that attended, please tell your impression of the evening.

We need to get more people in attendance.

Our side kick pals should also enjoy what we do each year.

Give Ray Therat some time to post fotos. He's doing my foto job on Marlo's 'liner this week.

Freud:

Glad to hear. Speaking to a crowd and holding thier attention is an art...and it really helps if you know your topic, connect with the audience and are comfortable in your own skin. Sounds like Betty and Tom did all of that well. It all comes together with a great host...Dr. so cheers to you for putting it all together again this year. I see from the 2014 invitation you have already started planning next year.

Glad to hear the great feedback.

Hello Freud - -

I agree with and echo all the ovations already expressed about the reunion. In addition, there was an important component to me.

I am teaching my 11 year old daughter about my love for racecars and my 50 year dream to run on the salt.  This reunion with speakers Tom, Betty, and Marlo on Friday night and all in attendance from near and far, helped my daughter understand why I crave for the competition and camaraderie that Bonneville provides. More specific, the reunion showed her the caliber of friends you make in this sport. It helps her to better understand who her only parent is and why I'm willing to spend the time and money on a future racecar. I have already taught her that people judge YOU, by the friends that you associate with. This reunion helped to make that point, I'm proud to say.

In the same light, thanks to Tom and Betty for showing the importance of making racing a family activity, one in which many "life" lessons can be learned. They sure hit the nail on the head for me on that one. Rizzy was honored to obtain the autographs of both Tom and Betty on a picture of the 411 streamliner. I also want to note, while am still new to this sport as a spectator, it was so easy to talk with Tom and Betty in the breakfast room on the morning after the Banquet, just before they left to get on the train home. We talked as though we were friends and co-racers for years.

I can't wait to pull together all my loose ends to build a racer for the salt and finally have my first timing slip in hand. Then, the N.W. Bonneville Reunion will be even more meaningful to Rizzy and me.

One last thing. I now have the confidence that when I draw the final design for my future racer, I could pass it by Tom Burkland for his go ahead approval or for suggestions of modifications. This is most meaningful to me since I haven't raced for 45 years. I really like this Reunion concept. Thanks Freud for pulling everyone together. See you next year on February 22.

Thank you all for your kind words.  Tom & I both had a ball telling our story/stories.  Like I told Freud quite a while ago, the problem is not getting us started talking . . . it is getting us to quit!  Thanks again.  We had a wonderful time!

That's okay Betty, probably just a little surface rust (Bonneville Loctite as you well know..).
We all hope You, Tom, and any other Montana Riffraff will come back next year.

Salt Nut....Betty...this is pure understatement....

I remember very well a World of Speed....this was the meet where you earned your Red Hat....I had one roll of slide film left over and kept it for you to get your parachute picture of the record run....

but not only this I remember....there was a 125 mph license run...which ends up at the 6 mile....after a (I think it was) 236 mph through the five....and someone has to run over your parachute to get you stopped....I think someone was very excited....

Salt Nut....okay....I would call it more a "Hell of a Salt Racer".....

Stay so crazy and stay upright....looking for to see you in August this year at the salt....

I just finished putting photos of the Reunion and associated activities on the server:
http://bonnevillenwreunion.com/gallery/2013/Welcome.html (http://bonnevillenwreunion.com/gallery/2013/Welcome.html)

Betty, would it be ok if I used the photos you had and added them to that site?  They'd make a wonderful addition to it.

Thanks,

Now that the reunion is a week behind me I need to do some payback.

Jon, I wish to THANK YOU and NANCY for the support you provided by posting the

event on Landracing.com home page. I never even got around to sending you a

schedule of the event.  You just dug it out of the mud and posted it for everyone to see.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

Having attended and been a worker in the past, you know how unorganized the event is.

There was nothing unorganized about the way you supported us.

I'm just hoping that February 22, 1914 both of you can attend.

People left shaking their head: disgusted or couldn't believe it?

It seemed to lean toward the latter..............sigh.

Yep FerD it was an unbelievable event... don't know how an old fart pulls off hosting an event 200 miles from home, gets great speakers to entertain us 2 nights in a row and a show and tell.
I knew it was time to go when the hotel staff started blinking the lights.... off to the hotel bar for more.  One day you should try the food, it was good.

Wheelrdealer,

I lived in Florida for 40 years and when I retired 2 years ago, I moved to Oregon to be within commuting distance from Bonneville. Plus, the NW Reunion is a short drive away and it is the real thing. Plenty of friends to talk with and meet new ones, not to forget the great speakers. I'm sorry I didn't FLY UP for previous NW Reunions now that I have attended for the last two years. . .

Did I say fly up. . . hint - hint.

Ray The Rat --

Our appreciation to you for a replay of our great time at the NW Reunion through your pictures. Rizzy and I looked at all of them. I'll PM you to order a few copies.

Freud - -

Thanks again for making our weekend feel like we were at Bonneville with our good friends again. I often caught myself looking at the carpet in the hotel to see if I left any white footprints.

I too thank Jon and Nancy for posting the Reunion info on this forum. This is my home base for all my landracing needs.

Freud asked me to be the original guest speaker ( Meet the Timer) what an honor to be there and several others over the years. I remember the sweating Freud was going thru to make it happen and the turnout was awesome as was the food. There were so many people getting to meet the first time even though they probably crossed paths on the salt and never met until this gathering. I look back at the pictures and was asked to fill in a few times during the event as Freud was busy and was again honored to introduce several of the other speakers in the years to follow. I have missed the last few but will work on that so we can attend next year. Put it in your plans as it's a event well worth your time and even the side shows he arranges are well worth the extra day or two.
Freud, thank you so much for this wonderful gathering each year. :-D

I was wondering if you were going to whip up a wayback machine to get us all to the Reunion.

Glad this year's event went as well as it did, and I'm sorry that Nancy and I didn't attend.  We'll try again for next time -- but the GNRS in late January will compete for our travel dollars, too.  Landracing.com will be active at the GNRS in '14.  Stop in and see Nancy and me.

Ray Therat added a lot of fotos to the website.  They were from the banquet this year.

He also added the images from Betty and Tom Burkland's presentation.

Have a look at what you missed if you didn't attend.

Thanks Ray.
