What are the odds??
« on: August 09, 2022, 01:35:57 PM »
Morning all, condolences to the folks who got skunked at SW!  So, that begs the question and I KNOW it is just speculation, but what do you long-experienced salities think the possibility of the salt drying out by WOS? And yeah, I know there will be the wise cracks but I can ignore that, just looking for some thoughts. Thanks all, hope we get to run !! Gnomenator

We were out there Saturday when it RAINED and we left yesterday. The entire salt surface was covered with between 5 and 10 inches of water. And the salt was floating on top. The guys retrieving their gear were asked to move at a no wake speed.
If the wind blows and it gets very warm for a while, again, and the warmth lasts, it could be the formula for a very good surface. The weather will dictate if we get the WOS. A hot, dry wind is the key. I think the ruts and tracks at the bend might take a winter to fix. That rainstorm Saturday evening was as bad as any recent deluge. Over an inch was running across the parking lot at the Red Garder. It was like someone was flushing a swimming pool.
So, I think it will take a hot, dry and windy couple of weeks before we will know.  I'm sure the USFRA will keep us updated.

Last week's weather may have little effect on the future.

It's just plain unpredictable -- Sept. or Oct.

The odds never favor October, but the meets (when they happen) are such fun!  And can contribute to your best times.

This year doesn't mean that next year will be better.

I expect Intrepid would have been ready for this situation so when they decide to open their gate will have a large influence on what we end up with & when.
The fact the salt was chunking & floating around like little icebergs is really odd & the unknown scenario at this point was it just from vehicles retrieving race cars or is it also from the course!

There ain't any odds.  You just play the hand you're dealt.

The NWS has a forecast for Wendover for the next week. It looks like at least a chance of a little rain almost every day. BMST starts in 17 days. So there has got to be LOTS of sun and wind between now and then. What is the opposite of a rain dance?

After dodging the "saltbergs" while picking up my car, I think the courses could dry out and be great. It might be impossible to get there though. It looks like the chunks were from vehicles driving over the expansion joints. We were lucky to get in and out - the slime just hadn't softened up yet. IMHO   YMMV

I was more concerned with the surface for racing again this year than the water.  The salt bergs floating and the dissolved salt from the surface.  This was all white salt the other day, now it is sections of salt surrounded by the mud underneath? Did the salt dissolve and is now in the brine solution? How long does it take for this to repair?  Will it be a full winter cycle?

Ask the BLM, they're the caretaker (and giver).

The BLM haven't given an honest answer to any question about the salt in at least 20 years so don't hold your breath waiting for one!
Last night I watched the Doppler Radar show a massive storm roll over the salt. It was a big muther that took from 6 to 8pm to pass & we caught the east edge of it here in Idaho on it's way to Montana.
My concern is with that much saltberg stuff floating around & with even more water, is it going to leave when Intrepid pull the plug? We will know the real story when we get to see it again.

I was wondering about the saltbergs - will the water evaporate and leaves the 'bergs all over creation with patches of mud and salt between them?  Kinda like scattering manhole covers on the street. . .

I know it's a new one and we'll know the answer to "What's gonna happen?" - later.

It did rain out there pretty hard last night. We have a friend still in town and she said it poured from the sky for a bit again.

It really hurts to see photos of the condition of the salt (what little remains of it).
