Title: WF is on!!
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on August 31, 2020, 07:20:02 PM
Want proof that we're serious about having WF this year?  The porta-potties are on order!!  I'll fly out to SLC Sunday afternoon and be on the salt before suppertime.  Monday is gonna be Inspection day and racing starts Tuesday and goes 'til either we run outa racers or it's late Friday.

I haven't seen an entry list yet.  If you do - please post it (as long as you don't get us in trouble.  Don't ask what I mean).  I intend to live stream the audio again, too.

Let's go racing!

Slim is so giddy with excitement (probably because of his porta potty fetish) that you would think it was starting this Friday, not a month from now

Nope.  WF is 29 Sept - 2 Oct this year,. and without meaning to prejudice the issue, I'll betcha that by Thursday (maybe even sooner!) afternoon we'll be down to only a few folks running, and there'll be a chance that at the end of Thurs it'll be decided to call it quits.

I'm not predicting - just making sure you know that you shouldn't wait 'til Friday before heading out there...

Although it only covers the first day of WF, WeatherUnderground's 10-Day forecast is currently showing sunny and 82F for 9/29!  Let's hope that's correct and it holds for the whole meet!

My WF pipe dream. Good weather, excellent track and a good attendance.  hope Poteet returns, but if he doesn't it could set up a good battle for top speed if only the following cars attend. Arley,, Eddie, and Rick. Sounds like the name of a law firm. Call Arley, Eddie and Rick if you injured yourself applying Preparation H.

Hmmm, less than 50 entries as of couple days ago. Can you say "we will be doing laps"?
Leaving today.

I've already begun thinking of ways to broadcast runs when they're spaced many minutes apart. :?

Jack , we leave tomorrow... guys, I suspect we will see at least 100 entries... I'm entered but I know of several that are taking advantage of not losing $100 if the meet is canceled before it starts.... since there was no incentive to enter early.  One is from Wichita... of course he just started a new job and didn't think his boss would give him a week off after a couple of months.... but I guess he got that worked out last week.
So I guess we will see how many show up... I hear there will not be an ice vendor and event gas is available in 5 gal cans only.  I'm loading the truck today, car's been on the trailer for several days, gas tank drained, ready to go.
We just need to tow half as far as you

Download from scta web page or Facebook page
Nut if you dont have sign at end of the road before going on salt. Latter just takes more time. At speed week I heard of line to bend in the road to get on the salt because of spectators and such waiting to sign

Anybody know if salt is open Sunday to drop stuff in the pits if we get there early enough?

Anybody know if inspection is in the pits like SpeedWeek or back to the inspection tent?

Stainless,

This is the latest update from FB. At this time they may be updating the SCTA website as the link for me is not working.

SCTA Southern California Timing Association

WF Update #1 (9/25/20):

We made it to the salt this morning. Our first observation of the salt is that it is better than Speedweek. Once we started dragging we realized the salt is still really hard but somewhat smoother. We made a few passes and the course seems to be smoother overall. All of the donuts being spun by all of the vehicles are leaving black marks, which means the surface is hard and the traction will be good. The course is definitely better than Speedweek.

Pit layout has been started and we will number them like Speedweek. We have a lot of front row spots available. There was still a lot of clean up from fire pits, fireworks, pallets & debris?Very sad to see and a lot of extra work. It?s bad enough people come out and make a mess on a national monument, but then they don?t take the trash with them.

We have good weather, good salt?all we are missing is you?See you on the Salt!

I fly into SLC tomorrow afternoon and should be on the salt by 5 or so.  I'm not sure when the toilets will arrive - but maybe even today or tomorrow.

Yes, I do intend to live stream the audio, as I mentioned earlier, and I'll remind you that thew expected paucity of runs may make for some dead air time.  I'm considering how to help make it easier to listen from home - like I'll leave the audio going all day and will add an hourly summary as well.  I'll figger it out.
Title: Re: WF is on!!
Post by: racergeo on September 26, 2020, 02:41:19 PM
I think the summary idea is spot on. Maybe more often if an exceptional run is made. If there was a way to record and rebroadcast for our listening enjoyment. Also to the newbies, dress worm, especially if your going to be out early. For new competitors with carbys, bring big jets
Title: Re: WF is on!!
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on September 26, 2020, 02:59:49 PM
Everything on the stream is archived and is available for playback at any time for free - including right now, even though the stream isn't turned on.  There's a fee if you want a copy of an entire day.

I tend to the hourly report so the folks will know when to listen, but I'll plan to modify that idea if it works out that I should.

I made it to O'Hare - now on to SLC.  I should be on the salt by late afternoon.

Okey-donkey, girls and boys.  The audio stream is up and running.  Today is set up and inspection and so on - but no racing.  I'll let the music run and make announcements now and then.

Hey HEY HAY!~!  It's World Finals and we're here and the salt is HARD and DRY.

This is gonna be GREAT!
Title: Re: WF is on!!
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on September 28, 2020, 02:14:42 PM
Howdy!  The salt sure looks great.  I have not driven the course* yet, but the access roads and other areas are hard and dry and not very bumpy.

*One course this year for WF - a combination short and long course.  No, that won't make for long lines because so far there are 53 (or so) entries.  But those entries - oh, my, maybe some of youse guys should hi-tail it out here.  We've got the new Burkdoll 'liner that Jim and his family have built.  It'll be running on a #444 Rick Vesco record of 335+ in C/FS.  Ed Umland is here with his B/BGS, Bals-a-Salt in the 135 AA/GALT, Mariani Farms B/GS, the Wolf-Strasburg team and their D/BFL are pitted right across the pit road from me.

There's a new (to me, at least) lakester - XO/BFL with a GMC 6 in it.  I'll try to get some photos.  Big Tim is here in the new C/DS powered by a Cummins 5.9L motor.  Chet Thomas and his B/BSTR and the Cummins-Beck-Davidson-Thornberry AA/BFR are registered, Nish Motorsports is here in the 998 D/FS, and the 1000 Bockscar will show us whether Stainless and Ross and Johnboy and the rest of them made improvements on it since SpeedWeek.  The Tradup D/GL, Jack Iliff and his G/GCC, and the Jesel B/BGMP are here.  I've seen two cars built in the Jack Costella mode -- Rick Yacoucci's 788 and Jim Hoogerhyde's 2020.

There are fifteen or maybe 20 bikes and I'll get a look at those next.  In the meantime, I'll refer you to the cars I just listed - maybe 20 of them, and that leaves maybe an other 15 I didn't list.

Do you think that any of them are short course cars?  I doubt it, and that means some fast times if the salt races as well as it looks.  Stay tuned  for more.

I took some pics at the far end yesterday, and right now Photobucket's site is down so I can't post 'em.  I was gonna show you that even the turnouts have a blue line to follow, and that even at the 8 mile it's all salt, no dirt.  Dragged to about the 8 1/4, packed for another 1/4, and if you're still moving when you're that far you'd best have some contingency plans in place right now!

I drove all the way there and back and the inner fenders were still almost all metal/very little salt at all.  That's hard salt.

Drivers meeting starts in about 45 minutes.  It'll be at the registration compound, NOT the start line.

The worksheet I got this morning show 77 entries -- 26 bikes and 51 cars.  Pre-reg was 43, and there you can see the power of good salt to draw in some more entries.  This oughta be a fast event.

Right now the drivers meeting is done, drivers are going down the course to see it, and Debbie (chief timer) says she'll do a roll call of c ourse workers abnout 8.45 and there we'll be ready to race.  At that time is when Bill Lattin and Pat McDowell get to make the momentous announcement:
"Let's Go RACING!!!!"

Streaming is coming thru loud and clear.
Sounds like it is gonna be a great day for racing.
Man I wish that I was there.
My wife just came in, heard the broadcast and asked if Slim was announcing,
she said good, I like that guys voice.

(....... I didn't even know she was paying attention during the speedweek livestream)

How's the salt, you ask?  Well, in impound tonight after the first day of racing there are 16 cars and 8 bikes.  That's 2 dozen qualifiers out of a field of about 80 entries.  I took pics in Impound before I left the salt this evening and will post them after I get some food.  Red Garter here I come.

It was a good day 2 of World Finals.  Fogie in the DRM 44 BFL got a 332 record.  There were 27 vehicles in impound last night, and about 2/3 of those backed up their records.  The 911 car hurt the input shaft while warming in Impound this morning - that's why it didn't make a return run.

Mike Kaehny in Impound reports 14 cars tonight, and I walked around and found at least 5 motorcycles including Randy Speranza.  Randy ran a 201.9 (I think it was), and that is the first run over 200 by a Harley-powered SCS  (SCS/BG 2000).

The course was moved tonight after racing ended so there'll be fresh salt for return runs in the morning.

So what?
is this an advantage or a disadvantage to everyone running tomorrow to back up their time?
I mean...... I'm not so sure how "equal" things can be if they are running on a new course.

So when do you think the course should be changed?

I think BNI is doing the right thing for racers.

What's this equal crap? The course changes with number of runs.

Yes, it's no big deal, as they're just shifting it to one side or the other of (and adjacent to) the existing course, rather than putting it in a completely new location.  This way, they can still use the same survey markings.
At Speedweek last year, the salt was so soft and was getting so torn up, they moved it each and every night!

Jack Iliff changed  classes to A/GALT and ran about 3 mph over the record and is in impound (number changed to 8522).

We're done for the day.  Tomorrow is the last day of WF this year.  Record return runs start at 8, as usual, and qualifying starts when the return runs are done.  Qualifying will go 'til 11, then a one hour break for some impound time for any qualifiers, then run  'em out.  Probably done by 1.

My flight out tomorrow is early enough that I'll hafta leave about 9.30-10AM.   :-(

thanks for all your coverage Slim on everyone the whole meet. We struggled first two days with performance and temperature management. The class change fixed  both(removed belly pan) change was to G/FAlt. Went 192+. Hoping for a good run in am
The salt has been the best in a long long time. Thanks to all the crews and volunteers and office folks. Well done!

I'm heading out there in a few minutes, but I'll mention that there are 16 in impound this morning, of which are 10 bikes and 6 cars.  Randy Speranza is NOT going to make a return run as he hurt the bike.  He's packed up and leaving today.  He's wearing a fancy red hat, though, so I expect that his disappointment is tempered a bit.

I will be leaving the salt about 9.30 this morning to catch my flight, so the announcing might kinda stop then, especially since the stream originates through one of my laptops.  Maybe I can arrange to leave it here.  Whatever - -

Return runs start with the 8AM parade.  Qualifying will resume once those are done.  All qualifying for the event ends at 11 this morning, then a one hour break for impoundy-stuff, the last of the return runs, and most likely the event is history by 1.

See you on the salt.

Awesome job by Slim covering the meet! We got to listen to the last of the broadcast as we cruised into smoke filled California on hwy 80, at times I thought that I was listening to the reincarnation of Walter Crankcase and Paul Harvey. Congratulations to all the racers, the SCTA, and the Salt gods for a near perfect meet.

Tip 'o the hat to Ross Powers
2 new records
And bumped his own "ink still wet" record this morning .
Yes, he rides a Sportster,  his own turbo build.

Well done sir.

The SCTA / BNI page does not list results from this meet just yet.  Being the impatient type I'm wondering how Ed U in the Chop Shop streamliner did?

Thx.

One run, one holed piston
Stainless was camera man for Ross.
