On both sides of the motor...
The HiVo that broke ran in oil from motors to clutch, the one on the other side that runs from clutch to tranny also in oil.  Max plans to use the BIG CHAIN on both sides.  The HiVos will be gone.  That is going to be a lot of weight slinging around but I'll bet it stays together.

Well it has been a while since I made it to Max's with the camera.  He has made a few pieces, just enough to know what to do next.  Sprockets are made, but not welded yet, for the crankshaft and cross shaft for the clutch.

The big chain is big... just a little heavier duty than the old one.

There are a few clearance issues that must be resolved before Max can proceed, but he has a plan to start milling cases and making clearance.  Then he will know what is next.

This one shows the tensioner requirement for the chain... not too bad

And after that side is finished, there is the other side, the clutch to tranny chain.  Max has his hands full with plenty to do.

Stopped in on Max a couple of times, he is making some progress with the motor repair.  The main repair will be the case cracks that developed when the chain was processed through the gears.  These are cases that Max modified and welded, so he is repairing it by welding the pieces back in place.

Here are a couple of shots where the cases separated.  The first one is obvious, this was an area that Max built up a large fillet weld when he modified the cases.

It is hard to see in the second picture but the weld area along the bottom is fractured

So the first thing is push the cases back together to close up the cracks a little.

Then Max ground the old welds out, kept pressure on the cases....

I know Max is probably doing this already but when you weld something that has bearings in it,like his engine case, it is very important to make sure that only the case is grounded and that none of the shafts or any other parts of the case are touching anything that could make a ground. Even very small amounts of current going to ground thru a bearing can case the bearing to fail. I speak from experience.$$$$$$$

Bak, Bub... just got the email

Max is moving on, the sprockets I showed earlier were just pressed on the crankshaft and clutch hubs.  He took them down to an old friends shop, Performance Engineering, here in Doodah to have them welded.  The place is owned by Warren "Jelly" Wilhelm, I didn't get a picture of Jelly, but his welder and fabrication guy, Andrew Tolle is shown in the picture with Max.

Very interesting place to visit, you need a US made english wheel, he makes them, dropped axle for your sprint car, makes them too, dual carb manifold for your old 60 HO V8... yea, makes those too.  This is what you see when you walk in the door...

Did you notice the big picture on the wall in the first picture?  Wichita Speedway, starting field and drivers, looked like a brick track... 1915

Place was full of toy race cars, and lots of stuff.... even had a Speedy Bill bobble head  :-D
